Which players did early Wildcarders sign for Gameweek 3?

Under 10% of Fantasy Premier League managers played their Wildcard for Gameweek 3.

After two weeks of the campaign, 6.8% of players worldwide pulled the trigger to create themselves a new squad.

That was 2.4% more than played their Wildcards in Gameweek 2, just 4.4% of managers shaking things up at the first hurdle.

Worldwide chip usage for Gameweek 3

So far, 11.3% of managers have played their Wildcards.

Not surprisingly, it was the most popular chip for Gameweek 3, as the majority of FPL players hope to use the others later in the campaign.

The Wildcard has certainly been the talk of the town in the Fantasy Football Scout community this week, so it is helpful to have a look at the Wildcard templates both overall and among the current top 10,000 managers.

Understandably, Sterling is the most popular player in Wildcards for Gameweek 3, chosen in 73.0% of them.

Following his four goals in two games, Teemu Pukki (£6.8m) is just behind the Manchester City man, currently sat in 61.2% of Wildcard squads.

Snapped up by a similar number of managers was Sheffield United’s budget option John Lundstram (£4.1m).

His 14-point haul in Gameweek 2 has convinced 61.2% of Wildcarders of his ability to offer value this season.

Despite much of the pre-season debate revolving around whether or not we should have Sterling or Kevin de Bruyne (£9.6m), those who have Wildcarded early simply asked ‘why not both?’

The Belgian midfielder is the second-most popular option in his position among those who went back to the drawing board for Gameweek 3.

These early-movers have also largely ditched Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), opting to spread the cash elsewhere.

In order to facilitate this, 46% of these managers have opted for Sadio Mané (£11.5m) as their coverage for the Liverpool attack.

They have also moved away from the Reds’ defence following a disappointing start to the season.

Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) is the most fashionable of Liverpool stoppers with 36.5% presence in overall Wildcard squads for Gameweek 3, with Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) not earning enough interest to make the top-five in this position.

Manchester United players are also proving popular, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.6m), Anthony Martial (£7.7m) and Marcus Rashford (£8.7m) in the template.

Number of chips used by managers in the current top 10k

Even though those currently in the upper echelons of the game are still, to some extent, skewed by chip usage, it is still interesting to see who some of these managers have turned to in order to press home their advantage.

Their Wildcard template picture is actually remarkably similar to the overall one, the only differences coming in the budget areas.

Lewis Dunk (£4.6m) has been turned to with no Liverpool defenders making the cut, while Todd Cantwell (£4.6m) is in 33.9% of top 10k Wildcard squads.

Just 10.2% of managers have used the Triple Captain so far, with 2.3% of them deploying it for Gameweek 3.

Kane appears to have been the chief recipient of this enhanced armband among the current top 10,000, while Sterling, Rashford and Mané also received attention for it.

          I started with Guilbert.

Hah hah - I couldn't believe it when I heard that lunch scorfe yesterday and then we lost a wicket first ball after. We're doomed! Actually, I don't rate Root as a captain - he needs to get back to his day job of batting.

I think Root needs to step down as captain, the Test team have struggled for a long time. I would give Stokes the captaincy I think, he has matured so much over the last year

Salah - but I specifically remember thinking, and saving, Sterling for this week. I'm a bit suspicious of saved FPL sessions - I'm thinking that I need to be more careful about checking whether my session is actually live. My own fault.
You've had a great start , haven't you? (from memory, not looked at your team)

The idea that they were on course to do a Liverpool 2018/9 and get 60% or so cs was daft. The double or triple up ambitious 🙂

They were certainly fortunate against Palace but they’ll still get more than other top 6 and they’ll finish around 55 points in mid table. Digne though remains a great pick provided Kean gets the gig up top

Alright, I hold up my hands. I'm not one to slink away when I balls up. My triple Toffee defence secured me plenty $$ in my weekly cash leagues in the last two weeks, but now my gameweek is over before it even began.

I'll need to watch the game again to see if they can get back to watertight ways, but it's so near to Inty Break, it would be unwise to WC now, as tempting though it is.

It's not madness when it works. Rough with the smooth and all that. Like I say, I'm not going to make too-hasty decisions, I need to analyse the defence to see if they were lucky GW1-2 or they are capable of more CSs. They still have a dozen or so good fixtures to come.

I reluctantly did Coleman > AWB on WC and kept Digne but honestly still think Everton will keep a huge amount of CS’s this season and will hopefully get Coleman back in

            Sterling, KDB, Son, Martial
            Kane(c), Pukki
            (Button, Lundy, Cantwell, Wickers)

Pukki > Kean on the cards now tbh - Kean has to start

Yeh, IF I were to WC now, I'd lose Pickford and Keane, but keep Digger for his attacking qualities. I'd also defect to Man U's defence. But I'll try not to. Yet.

Digne s little cheeky shot in the box late on was reassuring, along with taking some corners, and I think they played another corner to him on the edge of he box at one stage

The guy has a lot of attacking returns in him, and Everton will still keep CA’ s- he’s a keeper imo

        AMN Sokratis Luiz Monreal
        Torreira Ceballos Guendouzi
        Mkhi Laca Kola

If Arsenal go a goal down then bring on Auba for Mkhi and switch to 4-4-2

Who cares how many touches Auba gets? He is not the type of players that needs much of the ball to do manage. He just needs good service. His strength is stretching teams with his ability to break behind not come deep and link with his teammates. That front 3 is honestly ridiculous. Mkhitaryan can't finish or cross a ball. He also doesn't have balls to put in a challenge. Kolasinac has big balls but how can can you play him in a front 3 with his poor first touch, crossing and decision making? Liverpool would absolutely smash this lineup out of the park. Arsenal can get something out of this game because Liverpool are trying to play higher up the pitch. Pepe and Aubamayeng can do serious damage is they can get in behind. Lacazette needs to have a big game and do all the link work. What I do agree with is that all 3 of Guendouzi, Torreira and Ceballos HAVE to play but will also have to put in incredible performances to screen the defence. If they don't screen our defence we're toast.

              1) Auba got shut down by Liverpool last season (see article below)

              https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11670/11594599/pierre-emerick-aubameyangs-astonishing-stats-in-arsenals-loss-to-liverpool

              2) Arsenal cannot go toe-to-toe with Liverpool at Anfield. If you want to go toe-to-toe then play Pepe, Laca and Auba and expect a hammering like last season.

              3) Arsenal are susceptible to a high press - they need a midfield that has work rate. Auba and Pepe will not offer that down the wings and leave the full-backs exposed to Salah and Mane. They will also get lazy and allow TAA and Robbo to get forward easily.

              4) Liverpool's midfield is mobile. Xhaka is not mobile and susceptible to giving away fouls and picking up cards. Not worth the risk

                5 years, 2 months ago

Auba and Pepe don't always have to track back though. If they stay high they will stretch Liverpool who look vulnerable with this high line. Torreira, Guendouzi, and Ceballos should play as a flat 3 and shift wide when they need to. They have the mobility to do so. Xhaka needs to be on the bench, he is not fast enough to play against Liverpool.

I don't think Liverpool will be playing a high line today. It is Arsenal - not Norwich or Southampton. Klopp is smart. Like Pep he learns.

And if you keep Auba and Laca high that might push Robbo and TAA back too, but it plays into Salah and Mane's hands. They will love going one-on-one against Monreal and AMN.

People have short memories. Arsenal tried to go toe-to-toe with Liverpool at Anfield last season. This was the result:

              https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11670/11594599/pierre-emerick-aubameyangs-astonishing-stats-in-arsenals-loss-to-liverpool

              https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/46656883

The xG in that game was Liverpool 3.91 vs 0.98 Arsenal. The result was therefore not a fluke. Arsenal got battered. A good manager would learn from that mistake.

The lineup was actually similar to yours.... the likes of Iwobi and maitland niles were playing on the flanks. Also what u fail to mention is that Lacazette started on the bench with Auba as a CF. Auba should play wide where has more space. Lacazette has the link up ability and awareness to create spaces for others. We won't have Lichsteiner and Mustafi starting this time which is a good thing.

Surely going toe-to-toe is the only way Arsenal will be anything out of a game against a top side.

They certainly don't have the defence to keep out Liverpool.

So surely betting on Auba, Laca, Pepe & Ceballos to outscore Liverpool is the best option.

I can remember when Arsenal unexpectedly beat Spurs last season...it was razor-sharp finishing from Auba that won the day...benching him against Liverpool would be suicide!

Liverpool with Adrian instead of Allison are like one of those big massive chains that holds a cruise liner to the harbour, except one of the links is a little normal sized link that you would chain a bicycle with

Liverpool with a partially injured/not 100% Adrian... well that’s a different story altogether, Arsenal, and Auba, could have joy, but it’ll be a good game hopefully

Arsenal started like this against Liverpool at Anfield last season

            Leno
            Lichsteiner Mustafi Sokratis Kolasinac
            Torreira Xhaka
            Maitland Niles Ramsey Iwobi
            Aubameyeng

1 defensive winger (AMN) = Kola in your side and one winger with lack of end product (Iwobi) = Mkhi in your side.

And in the game at the Emirates that they got a point in a 1-1 draw

              Leno
              Bellerin Mustafi Holding Kolasinac
              Torreira Xhaka
              Mkhitaryan Ozil Aubameyang
              Lacazette

Much more of an attacking lineup

Yeah below the safety score. That score is determined by what percentage of people need to be cut that week. Think the percentage rises each week so that by the last game of the season there are only a couple of teams left.

Considering how deep McGinn was playing last night this late assist is like very nice unexpected bonus to a Heaton's CS.

Jota worth keeping if he blanks? Was considering Barnes but Burnley up against Liverpool next is putting me off.

Look beyond that though and the fixtures look great. He won’t keep it up all season but right now Barnes is where to be - second to Pukki of course - in that price bracket. Wait for systemic failure first before ditching him as prospect imo

Once again Mings was a rock last night, he looks a completely different player to when he was at Bournemouth. Him and Ake could have been a formidable paring.
Any how, 4.5 looks a steal and will
No doubt go up in value. Already 2 games with BPS, an assist and a CS

He looked very calm & composed.... but Everton should have scored 2 ( DCLOL & Theo made sure they didn’t)

He’s also very injury prone, and has a habit of going to ground too easily imo, there were a couple of close calls last night again where he was putting his body in places he just physically shouldn’t Andy he’s going to get crocked if he keeps doing it

Agree with this...…….Im not a Mings fan but he has looked really good in all three games and seems to be the main man in that team. My only worry was the amount of goals conceded in the Championship last year...……...Will watch closely next week.

Heaton, Engels & Mings looks a very strong back line. Next few games I’m sure there is potential to pick up some points for sure.

Still not sold on Villa defence.

That was a cs predicated almost entirely on woeful Everton finishing. Everton are gash in attack right now.

I can’t see myself not using a WC this GW, I don’t massively need to but price rises are coming too quickly, another GW and 4 players that I want to bring in will be .4 more expensive

Only 73% of WCers picked Sterling. Would've guessed 90%+. Must be the "coverage" managers going for KDB.
