International Football

Which FPL assets are on international duty and when do they play?

A number of key Fantasy Premier League assets will not be on duty with their respective countries during this first international break of the season.

However, the main bulk of top-flight players are in action between now and Gameweek 5, which is why we have assembled a detailed list of who is involved and on what dates.

Following the first-ever summer Cup of Nations tournament, African football has reached something of a lull which will have positives for Fantasy managers.

Many of the continent’s biggest countries are not in action between now and Gameweek 5, with only friendlies and African Nations Championship, for which Premier League players are not eligible, on the calendar for CAF.

That means that both Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Sadio Mané (£11.5m) will be getting a proper break from competitive action during this international break.

Mohamed Salah is not on international duty this month

Joining those Liverpool players in a genuine rest are Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m), Salah’s compatriots Ahmed El Mohamady (£4.5m) and the suspended Trezeguet (£5.4m) while Mané’s international colleagues Cheikhou Kouyaté (£4.9m) and Watford’s Ismaïla Sarr (£6.4m) are also without a match until their next Premier League commitments.

Ghana’s England-based players are also fixtureless during this break, only an African Nations Championship game, which means Jordan Ayew (£5.1m), Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.5m), Daniel Amartey (£4.5m) and Christian Atsu (£5.4m) don’t have international duty either.

The same goes for Cameroon and Brighton defender Gaëtan Bong (£4.4m) as well as for New Zealand and Burnley’s Chris Wood (£6.3m).

Crucially, both of Manchester City’s strikers Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) and Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) won’t be representing their countries during the international break.

Neither one of Manchester City’s recognised centre-forwards will play for their country in September

The former, like compatriot Lionel Messi, has not joined up with Argentina as they play two friendlies, while Jesus is suspended at international level.

Not surprisingly, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson (£5.8m) remains absent from the Brazil setup as he still has work to do on the calf injury picked up against Norwich in Gameweek 1.

Surprisingly, neither Willian (£7.0m) or Fernandinho (£5.3m) have been included in the Brazil squad for their upcoming fixtures, although that probably boosts their chances of starts in Gameweek 5.

As per usual, it is the American and Asian nations whose players will be racking up plenty of air-time during the international break.

Jiménez has a very busy international break and may come back later than his colleagues

Willian’s Chelsea colleague Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) will still be on international duty in the early hours of next Wednesday morning when the USA take on Lucas Torreira’s (£4.9m) Uruguay in Missouri.

That takes place just a few short days before Chelsea travel to Wolves on Saturday September 14, although Arsenal don’t play Watford (away) until the Sunday of Gameweek 5.

Around a similar time to the USA friendly, Mexico and Argentina will be going head-to-head in Texas.

In the small hours of Wednesday morning, Raúl Jiménez (£7.4m) could be in action with his country having made the squad once again, and could be facing any number of Nicolas Otamendi (£5.4m), Manuel Lanzini (£6.5m), Giovani Lo Celso (£7.4m) and/or Roberto Pereyra (£5.9m).

Meanwhile, centre-backs Davinson Sánchez (£5.5m) and Yerry Mina (£5.6m) have commitments with Colombia in Florida at 2am on Wednesday morning ahead of Gameweek 5.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has pulled out of the England squad with a back injury

West Ham defender Fabian Balbuena (£4.4m) has a long journey ahead of him over the international break as he travels 6,000 miles to Kashima to face Japan with Paraguay, before a trip to the Middle East for a meeting with Jordan.

Newcastle attacker Miguel Almirón (£5.9m) has managed to miss out on that itinerary, while Southampton’s Maya Yoshida (£4.5m) will be in action in the early hours of Wednesday morning as Japan face Myanmar.

There are also a number of Premier League assets who have pulled out of international duty because of injury problems.

For example, Paul Pogba (£8.5m) has pulled out of the France squad with ankle problem, to be replaced by Arsenal’s Matteo Guendouzi (£4.5m). There is still no N’Golo Kanté (£5.0m) available for Didier Deschamps’ men as he also struggles with an ankle injury.

Meanwhile, the France manager has eased the concerns of those in possession of Sébastien Haller (£7.5m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£9.4m) as neither of them made the cut for international duty despite decent form, although the latter recently picked up a hamstring injury anyway.

After years of calls for his inclusion, Aymeric Laporte (£6.5m) was finally selected for the French squad but is now dealing with a potentially long-term knee injury after Manchester City’s win over Brighton in Gameweek 4.

Meanwhile, Pogba’s Manchester United colleague Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.5m) pulled out of the England squad on Tuesday afternoon with a back complaint. That leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer potentially short in the full-back areas for the Gameweek 5 meeting with Leicester, as Luke Shaw (£5.4m) and Diogo Dalot (£4.9m) are both out too.

Laporte could be facing a long time on the sidelines

Matt Doherty (£6.0m) was originally selected for the Republic of Ireland but pulled out with knee problems, while compatriot James McCarthy (£4.5m), now of Crystal Palace withdrew without an injury, referencing only his recent return to first-team action.

“I have spoken at length to James [McCarthy]. He has recently moved to Crystal Palace and is only back playing. James is completely free of injury but the intensity of the Switzerland game was always going to be too much for James and we discussed that.” – Mick McCarthy, Republic of Ireland manager

Norwich centre-back Grant Hanley (£4.0m) has pulled out of the Scotland squad as the injury problems in Daniel Farke’s defence continue, while Antonio Rüdiger (£6.0m) is still not considered fit enough for a return to the Germany squad.

His club-mate Mateo Kovačić (£5.5m) is also in the physio room now, having sustained an Achilles problem ahead of Croatia’s upcoming matches.

“Mateo Kovacic has been diagnosed with inflammation of the Achilles tendon grip on his right leg, which is why he cannot compete for Croatia’s upcoming games against Slovakia and Azerbaijan.” – Croatia official statement

Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m) pulled out of the Nigeria squad after missing Gameweek 3 although returned from injury in Gameweek 4 so he is likely to get a rest.

Moise Kean has been ommitted from the Italy squad for this international break

Finally, Everton striker Moise Kean (£6.8m) has been left out of the Italy squad, along with Nicolò Zaniolo, as a punishment by manager Roberto Mancini.

The pair were were criticised for arriving late to a team meeting at the Euro Under-21 Championships earlier this summer, which may have led to this omission from the senior squad.

Either way, it does mean Kean will be free from international duty ahead of the Gameweek 5 meeting with Bournemouth on Sunday September 15.

“I’m sure they will come in handy later on. I don’t like leaving them behind as punishment. They are still young. We gave them a great opportunity and we hope this helps them going forward. They must learn to behave well. Professionals must always behave well.” – Paolo Maldini

Struggling to see how I could fit in KDB without hurting the squad...

    Pope
    TAA - VVD - Digne
    Salah - Sterling - Martial - Mount
    Haller - Pukki - Barnes

    Button - Cantwell - Lundstrum - Hanley

Happy with Pope. The backline is expensive, but they should be 3 of the best value players in the game come the end of the season. 6.0m-7.0m for 170-200pts seems a generous exchange.

Salah and Sterling are a must for me personally. So really my team has 5 flexi-slots which are currently: Martial, Mount, Haller, Pukki, Barnes, who all seem good value atm.

KDB owners, how have you fit him in personally, what was your compromise?

        1pt ahead of Mark, so I assume that's good. 168,482 k

        WC intact, yeah.

Such a good team man. Drop one of the strikers for a 4.5 and upgrade Martial. Easy fix

        Play Cantwell every game?

Might be worth it... I like having a strong bench option though. Thanks, I'll look into that option.

Yeah that's basically what I have, with Zinchenko instead of Mount.

Have had a poor start and had to scramble to get to this point, but I feel like that team is well set to push on now.
A little uncomfortable relying on Cantwell, but Salah/Sterling/KDB with strong defence and mid range forwards looks fantastic. Your team is class as it is anyway

Maybe VVD and Martial >> Mings and KDB after gameweek 5.

Yep, probably a popular option atm given the Liverpool defence this season. I'll consider it, thanks.

Tbh there's just one option.. VVD downgrade and martial upgrade. Rotating for 1 spot in defense could prove value too especially with the likes of Lundstram, Burnley and soyuncu at that price

Nice idea. I used to be a big advocate of the value of defence rotation.
VVD seems like such good value in the long-run though...

Think I'll run some numbers and see how it looks. Thanks.

I don't think it's unreasonable to play one of Cantwell / Lundstram each week. Then you could drop one of your forwards and Martial.

That said, I'd be wary of disassembling a very good squad for the sake of one player when the players you'd be dropping are also very good...

It's difficult. Guess the transfer cost is the tipping point at the moment.

I like gathering all the options before deciding though, so thanks for the idea.

I've got KDB, Salah and Sterling with LIV double up in D.

It means I have a front three of King, Pukki and Greenwood. King will probably become Barnes or Haller.

Something has to give unfortunately and I have prioritised mids as they have the extra scoring available which forwards don't. So no Kane or Kun for me...and I'm happy with that.

        So Digne was your sacrifice?

Forgot him...yes Digne is there too. My view is that Robbo, Digne and VVD/TAA play as mids anyway so are great value at 6.5-7mill.

I'd say Martial and Mount to KDB and a bargain mid, but whether its worth it is anyone's guess. My compromise was a second pool defender originally.

      Martial > KdB

Fund it with the VvD > 4.5m. Strong team.

Don't think VvD will be getting 200 points this season. Liverpool are a lot frailer at the back.

I'm really not sure the Liverpool defence has completely caved just yet. Allison was a loss for sure. But their two home games were against Arsenal and Norwich, though only conceded 1 goal a piece. Stats don't look great. Still undecided on them. Guess I wait a game or two and see how the Pool defence looks. Thanks.

They'll do fine. But missing out on KdB hauls with these coming fixtures is gonna suck way more.

KdB + 4.5m rotation with Lundstram is going to score more than Martial + VvD I think.

      I personally did Fraser-Salah-Robertson->KDB-Mane-AWB.

Not my best move, was doing bad over a couple of weeks and rage transfered.

took -4 and is set back 10 pts total on the move after two gameweeks. But could pay of long term.

Hello that looks like my team except I have KDB and a cheapie defender instead of your Martial and VVD. I was in a similar position and reluctantly sold Martial. It’s a good team anyway without KDB so wouldn’t worry. All the best.

given the fixtures have gone Aguero over Salah to free up the mid slot to have KdB (up front pick any 2 of Hal/Puk/Abr/Bar). also dropped the double Liverpool defence because fixtures + Allison and to free up funds

all much of a muchness really, suspect captaincy + random variance the only real decider between various formations now the template is pretty much set

nice! I also sold Salah on wc 2 for Mane. So far so good.

        TAA
        Sterling, Mane,

Very close to my team, so here i go:

      Ryan - Button
      TAA - Digne - Soyu - Lundstrum - Kelly
      Salah - Sterling - Bruyne - Martial - Mount
      Pukki - Barnes - Greenwood.

Got bruyne as you suggested, by sacrificing single defender spot. But the 3 of Kelly, Lund, Soyu do rotate rather well. Got 0.6ITB too for emergencies...

      Playing 3-5-2

That's nice. I guess the most popular choice is sacrificing VVD atm. Depends if the Liverpool defence can improve then...

Already did my transfers this weak which was VVD + AWB -> TAA + SOYU so I am in on the VVD sacrifice. Not sure i would want to sacrifice Martial though. Well time will tell if i did the right thing 🙂

Gone without Pool mids/attack. Potentially a massive mistake if Kane fails again at home and Pool run riot against Toon.

Toon look stubborn as hell to break down. They're one team I won't captain a player against atm.

I think the intensity with which Pool are able to play and sustain will blow Newcastle away. Might captain TAA.

I'm on a WC and have tried to keep Kane in my team, as a differential. I'm not sure though!

      Pope/Button
      TAA/Digne/Pieters/Lundstram/Hanley
      Sterling/Salah/KDB/Cantwell/Dendoncker
      Kane/Barnes/Greenwood

It would probably have to be martial & mount > KDB + Fodder then start one of Cantwell or Lundstram every week

      Or same thing with Haller

With your squad structure, I'm not sure you need KDB. You have 11 players who should all score you a good amount of points for their price. KDB is great, but not sure the downgrades elsewhere would allow much improvement to your squad

Not a set formation yet. Rotation between Den, Mings, Lunds and Low depending on fixtures. Wait to see if Auba kills it. If not easy switch to Vardy and Barnes if needed. Still no go?

No go. Auba ruins the team balance and your bench is gash.

Having to play two of Mings, Lundstram, Lowton and Dendo is really not good. Should be 3 rotating for 1 spot. So you need to improve one starting spot.

If you really want Arsenal coverage, punt on Pepe instead like me. The extra 1.6m gets you a better starter.

That they didn't replace Kompany seems risky now. Apparently they have a very promsing CB in the academy who I imagine we will see more of in the cups this year.

That was strange but then when you see Maguire going for so much you can see why Citeh may have been reluctant to jump into the market, just seeing them sniff around a player seems to add 30m to the price tag these days, I don't think they expected to lose Kompany last year, he's had a rough start to management to boot.

They have the youngster Garcia who Pep rates highly, but I can't see him getting many PL minutes, so it's down to Stones, Otamendi, Fernandinho and Walker to get them through till January.

Fair, but they have a plethora of midfield talent, so the opportunity cost wasn't as great as Laporte to John Stones imo.

From what I can make out with some amateur googling a meniscus tear usually takes about 6-8 weeks to heal. Could be more, could be less (Suarez recovered after 4 weeks in 2014). Maybe the cartilage damage will add to that, I don't know I'm not a doctor.

It's one to monitor isn't it. Think he missed a few PL games last season and they kept a couple of clean sheets, and I get the feeling with City it's more about the system than specific personnel, but for sure its a massive blow. Relying on Stones, Otamendi, Fernandinho and Walker till January isn't ideal.

Pretty happy with the team. Salah vs Aguero the main differential which im happy to run given the fixtures.

I will probably reverse that once the fixtures swing back around, although a stacked midfield of 9.5s (KdB/Son/Pepe) is something I will contenance given im pretty much resolved to perma captaining Sterling.

For me it is Kun and Sterling. I ve had KDB since gW1, i planned on KDB and Kane to match Sterling & Aguero, and save me money in the process. I invested the money i saved in having Vardy.

            Hi Peeps, Good Afternoon

Was playing around with my team a bit...

Would you go ahead with the below proposed moves after the break?

            Team:
            Pope ○ Adrian
            VVD ○ Zinchenko ○ Soyuncu ○ Lundstrum ○ Kelly
            Sterling ○ Mane ○ KDB ○ Martial ○ Mount
            Rashford ○ Pukki ○ Fodder

            1FT ○ .4 ITB

            Moves planned(-12):
            Adrian -> 4m GK
            Soyuncu -> TAA
            Martial -> Sigurdsson/Richarlison
            Rashford -> Barnes

              Horrible transfers imo.

All are sideways or downgrades. You kept Martial through last week, surely you did that with the intention of keeping. Adrian a complete waste of a transfer. Just sell Rashford to fund TAA in. Rashford > Vardy/Haller and VvD > TAA.

Then why did you keep him last week? It's important to remember that you made choices at the time for a reason too. I ditched Martial last week because I didn't think he'd be ready for this week by which time the good fixtures will have expired and I'd have kept 7.6m rotting away on the bench.

Because I already had a -4 and my cover for Martial was Kelly who got me 6 points 🙂

Also didn't fancy any midfielder in that price bracket. Never considered Richarlison tbh

            Will have 2 FT's going into GW6

If Kane doesn't haul and city don't CS then Zink + Kane > 4.5 + Kun is on the cards

Soyuncu, Burnley or someone at the 4.5 Def Mark

If Zimmerman continues to get injured, Hanley might play. I'm not convinced he's nailed, though.

Assuming no injuries during the IB, is my bench order correct for GW5?

            Pope
            TAA - Digne - Dunk - Lundstram
            Sterling - KDB - Iwobi
            Kane (C) - Auba - Pukki

            (McGovern - Cantwell - Demconkers - Rico)

I'm thinking Laporte injury might be opening the door for me to play Cantwell over Lundstram? Thoughts?
