Captain Sensible

Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 9?

Fantasy Premier League managers are going to have to look outside the usual suspects to find the best captain for Gameweek 9.

With both Manchester City and Liverpool facing relatively tough fixtures, this week’s debate largely centres around some less-discussed faces.

As ever, we’ve got the results of our latest poll and will also bring you analysis of the underlying numbers posted by players and opposition defenders alike.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Tammy Abraham (£7.7m) comes into Gameweek 9 as the most popular captaincy option.

At the time of writing, the Chelsea forward had amassed the support of 32.2% as Newcastle prepare to visit Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

The Magpies have conceded at least three times in all but one of their away matches this season, losing 5-0 on their most recent Premier League road trip at Leicester.

Meanwhile, Abraham currently sits joint-top of the Golden Boot race having scored eight times this season.

Callum Wilson is a popular option in the Gameweek 9 captaincy debate

However, those that are put off by the fact that 25% of Abraham’s league goals have come in front of his own supporters in 2019/20, might be looking at Callum Wilson (£7.9m).

The Bournemouth forward is currently on course for a runners-up medal in the latest captain poll, with 16.3% of you backing the £7.9m man.

His Gameweek 9 opponents Norwich have conceded 21 goals in their first eight matches back in the top flight, the highest of any side.

Meanwhile, Wilson himself has registered attacking returns in all but one Premier League outing of 2019/20.

At the Vitality Stadium, he has three goals and two assists in four appearances, making more attacking returns against a still injury-trouble Norwich outfit very likely indeed.

Manchester City’s assets are not well-backed for their trip to Crystal Palace

As already mentioned, the captain poll has been somewhat turned on its head for Gameweek 9.

While mid-price options dominate the top end of the scale, it’s the premium assets who are bringing up the rear as a result of their tricky fixtures.

Manchester City must travel to Selhurst Park this weekend, where Crystal Palace have conceded just one goal in four league matches there this season.

For that reason, just 6.3% of you believe that Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) is the best captain for Gameweek 9.

He was one of England’s star performers against Bulgaria on Monday night but does only have one league goal in his last five Premier League outings.

That is probably enough reason for only a select few managers to consider him for the captaincy this week.

Aubameyang and his Arsenal colleagues are set to face a stubborn Sheffield United side on Monday night

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) is facing a similar dilemma to Sterling, in that his Gameweek 9 fixture does look quite difficult.

Sheffield United have made both Chelsea and Liverpool work hard for results against them this season and have conceded one goal or fewer in three of their four at Bramall Lane in 2019/20.

Compared to Newcastle and Norwich’s defence, the Blades does seem more likely to frustrate a captain, even if Aubameyang has registered attacking returns in all but one match this season.

The case for Harry Kane (£10.9m) is perhaps the reverse of those at Manchester City or Arsenal.

The Tottenham forward has an incredibly favourable fixture, against a Watford side bottom of the league, winless and 20 goals conceded so far.

However, Kane and his colleagues have gone through a difficult period of form, losing 7-2 to Bayern Munich and then 3-0 at Brighton.

That said, the international break may help Mauricio Pochettino’s cause, while Kane himself has three goals and one assist in his last five Premier League matches.

He is currently backed by the same number of voters who are considering Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) for the captaincy.

Reportedly unhurt following a traffic collision this week, there probably remains some concerns about his strength of start.

Furthermore, the Argentinian’s accuracy has left a lot to be desired in recent matches, but he still has attacking returns in every round apart from Gameweek 8 in 2019/20.

Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) has the support of 4% ahead of a potentially tricky meeting with Burnley although he has goals in every match against sides who finished outside the top seven last season thus far.

Liverpool attackers Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané face a trip to Old Trafford this weekend

3.6% of you are waiting on an update from Guardiola on Kevin de Bruyne‘s (£10.0m) fitness ahead of that visit to Crystal Palace.

The midfielder remains yellow-flagged in FPL and his presence, or lack of it, could prove an important factor in Manchester City’s next result.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Sadio Mané (£11.7m) are shockingly low in this week’s poll, on 1.9% and 2.1% respectively.

The Egyptian is without a goal since Gameweek 5, while Mané has no attacking returns away from home since Gameweek 4.

Manchester United, although in poor offensive form, might prove a challenge to Liverpool defensively considering the recent numbers they have been posting, as discussed on the Scoutcast.

Furthermore, the last time Jurgen Klopp took his side to Old Trafford in the Premier League, it ended as a 0-0 draw.

Son Heung-min (£9.8m), Mason Mount (£6.8m), Teemu Pukki (£7.1m), Richarlison (£7.9m), Josh King (£6.3m) and Raúl Jiménez (£7.1m) are the only other options backed by more than 1%.

Connolly has just come back from his first international break and Potter was talking up the need to be careful with both him and Trossard. Think Norwich bubble has burst and Cantwell is carrying a bit of an injury. Think the Blades will frustrate Arsenal under the lights on Monday night at a noisy Brammel Lane and Lundstram can also add an attacking bonus to a potential clean sheet.

This is one of my options as fixtures wise seems a good time to get off
Double Pool defence. This or switch to 343 and do VVD/Greenwood to Kelly/King.

This is the best time to be on double Pool defence. Set and forget . If you lose VVD you will regret it. I would just do Salah to Mane to get Wilson. Or get rid of Otamendi for a maverick Tierney pick.
          Nice squad btw.

From the Guardian's: 10 things to look out for:

    5) Will Leicester sustain their strong start?
Football365 recently published an article that broke down the attacking numbers surrounding Leicester’s very good start to the season and hypothesised that they are quite simply unsustainable. For instance, Jamie Vardy’s five goals have come from seven shots on target, while the four Ricardo Pereira and Wilfred Ndidi have scored between them have come from four shots on target. So a drop off is coming....

Vardy is a consistent pick every season. Only own him from LEI.

Pereira for me a decent pick but punting Tierney instead.

LEI's stats are not good but they have had an excellent start and might improve performances on the pitch.

That’s daft though. They can’t take the data from a tough fixture run and use that as a projection for a good fixture run ... i.e. you’d expect more chances to be created against poorer teams.

      1. Jarnathan
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 15 days ago

Well I think they've looked at the returns from that fixture run and made that a consideration based upon the number of shots to say that it's unsustainable.

So whilst what you say maybe true and their number of shots is likely to increase, will the number of conversions decrease as the author suggests, or is this an aspect of Leicester's particular style of play. From what I've seen of Leicester, they often score on a break with total possession less important - and in doing so are able to get closer to the GK having got past the defence. Maybe this is incorrect - but I'd imagine that whilst such an approach would allow for less opportunities, that the conversion rate is higher due to their style of play.

        1. St Pauli Walnuts
          • Fantasy Football Scout Member
          • 6 Years

Maybe the stats suggest the conversion rate is unsustainable but if they get double the chances they could feasibly sustain the same amount of goals or more from a greater amount of shots. Still think it's a daft hypothesis. If they had already had easy or at least mixed fixtures it would be more relevant.

Also Rodgers has come out and said he doesn't plan to get rid of the counter attack part of their game but wants to add more possession based stuff to it as well, they have the players for both styles so makes sense to me.

I don't subscribe to that theory at all

Vardy has gone 2-2-2-2 from Chelsea, Utd, Spurs, Liverpool... and 2-8-16-12 from Wolves, Sheffield, Bouremouth, Newcastle

All it takes is one look at Vardy's goal involvement to see just how much he hoovers up from Leicester's attacking output... He's also the club talisman, he's on penalties, he's entering a fixture list which certainly looks lighter on paper compared to the one he's just exited

Great Post here also on an even deeper dive into the tactical considerations in the 4 games he's played so far against last seasons top 6 that have contributed to the aforementioned 2-2-2-2 https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/21013089

To me those who look at a selection of Leicester's (backward looking, and underlying i.e. Indirect) stats and conclude that Vardy, Maddison, Pereira, Soy are to be avoided due to a low probability of (forward looking, i.e. direct) FPL points demonstrate a limited knowledge of how to actually use statistics to inform an FPL decision - any half trained hamster can click sort and look at the top and bottom of a stats table after all

Note: this is, categorically, NOT the same thing as saying those players are guaranteed to smash it for the next 10. In predicting the outcomes of a single, or a series of sporting events there are very few guarantees 🙂

Have a look at my response to Devo above. I guess what I should have asked at the end of my post - is this low shots on target, combined with a high conversion rate a consequence of style of play...

Are we all avoiding Tammy Abraham due to "unsustainable" underlying statistics?

Are we all going in heavy on man utd defenders due to healthy XGc numbers?

Which statistics do you focus on then (if any) or how do you consider statistics in the context of playing styles / fixture runs / eye test etc.

There isn't a one size fits all approach to using statistics

(IMVHO) they are EXTREMELY situational and need to be tailored heavily depending on players, positions, teams, fixtures, managers, schedules and many many other important considerations

I've seen this' Leicester over-performing' strawman gather pace of late and I just totally disagree with it (for many reasons, some of I'd which are outlined above)

To be clear I am in no way shape or form having a go at you personally, I thought that would have been clear, we just (potentially) hold very different opinions on a very interesting and timely FPL topic 🙂

I know you're not having a go - and I welcome the differing opinions. Like you, I'd like to stir up debates that get us to all think about how statistics are used and the limits of data.

Too much of FFS is asking for advice on players or combinations that don't encourage the OP to think or learn. I've always enjoyed reading your posts by the way.

Cheers bud! I thought your OP was very typical hence my reply 🙂

And you will notice I added the MASSIVE disclaimer to my post, as damned if I know for sure what's going to happen with Vardy, Maddison et al points-wise over the next 1,3,5,10 games

But for my money they're well worth investing in - time will tell!

That's right - we should just shut down discussions and stick to Rate my Teams and should I pick players combination a b c or x y z.

Giving an opinion that totally clashes with someone elses is not the same thing as shutting down a discussion 🙂

Shutting down a discussion is posting nonsense like 'I would advise you to stop this discussion' - THAT to me is the type of behaviour we need to move away from

I'm not here to change anyone 's opinion by the way, I'm here to give my own and share the logic that underpins it - if it ruffles a few feathers, so be it, we're all big enough & bold enough to speak up 🙂 (well, some of us are ;-))

If so then please accept my apologies (and up votes) and consider the closing remark in brackets solely to be applicable to the other 'contributor' to this little rat hole he thought it would be wise to create

Whilst we may differ in our onions of Leicester, I 100% agree with Ason Wila on that particular issue 🙂

Ah there he, like a bad smell, albeit coming to grace the thread with some constructive input 🙂

Now that you've gotten your traditional totally unrelated nonsense post out of the way, would you care to share your opinion on the matter raised in the OP?

Or would you just prefer to continue posting bitter & childish passive aggressive garbage? I think we know what the answer will be 😉

Alas, duty called and I return to find that not only are you are still struggling with your difficulty, but that you are now 4 contributions deep into a specific discussion between two fellow members, and yet have somehow not yet referenced the subject of the OP... Your mind seems preoccupied instead with something totally different...

Maybe it will come in your fifth contribution?

So reassuring that you fail to acknowledge that in this instance you are factually incorrect and you are sticking to your usual routine by now using diversion tactics in order to steer the discussion away from my comment . You then end your comment in your usual patronising manner .Your are commendably consistent in this .
In some ways your all consuming arrogance and inflexibility should be admired and applauded.

You are obviously always correct of course and we should all be grateful for your contributions and feel totally humble in your presence.
I am so fortunate to have conversed with someone whose personality traits are beyond compare.

Ah now this is a worrying development dear friend 🙁

Not only have you progressed 5 comments deep into a thread without referencing the actual topic (but rather seem much more intent on referencing an altogether different subject, one that seems to drive you to similar interjections on quite a regular basis 😉 )... But you also seem to be developing a pattern of similar behaviour

It was not but 24 hours ago that a spiritually similar interjection was offered, almost identical in spirit in fact 🙂

                        https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/21013077

Anyone would think you are on this forum to discuss matters altogether separate from the topics at hand, and instead carry quite an unhealthy... What's the word... Obsession? 🙂

Looking forward to your response dear friend, we may even finally get a comment aligned to the subject of the thread 😉

Why dear friend, I am flattered, but you should know by now you do not need to thank me 🙂

I consider it part of my civic duty as an FFS member to help those such as yourself who exhibit such obvious deficiencies in their understanding, albeit you have not yet started to repay the debt with the constructive, or even just logical, contributions of which we know you surely must be capable...

That may come in time however, and rest assured we shall not give up on you...

Maybe your 7th comment in a thread about Leicester will actually be about... Leicester?

Or will it perhaps be on an altogether different topic? The one that seems to be so prominent in influencing the direction of your contributions of late? 😉

I still sense some bitterness here @Ask Yourself - is it emanating from the recent KDB & (not just as recent 🙂 ) Pepe discussions?

Never owned Pepe and just transferred KDB back in to captain him this week. It was a very low risk move to sell and have no other problems in my team so

I do however note that we are still remiss on your opinion on the subject of the thread? Or perhaps your thoughts have been more preoccupied with another topic?

So preoccupied in fact, that you are driven to deliver 8 (!) contributions without yet referencing the opening subject?

You keep us in suspense, dear friend, perhaps we will have our resolution with post #9 😉

As a (very vocal) seller - which way is KDB punishing you? Sounds like you're definitely getting him back so you won't miss the haul if it happens - so must be either use of a precious FT that could otherwise be rolled forward, or put to better use than buying back an outstanding FPL player you owned last week, at a higher price into the bargain? Or via a 4 point hit?

I still chuckle at the response to my pre-season advice to avoid Pepe to swerve any potential early adaption period 😉

Excellent . I now know that the way forward is not to listen attentively and respond when prompted but to ignore and know that my opinion is always the only one worth listening to. I can't wait to practice on my friends. I am sure that their reaction will be unquantifiable. I can then report that I learnt my new skills from a personality trait expert on the Internet. Oh the joy ahead .

Dear friend, whilst your newfound positivity of outlook is certainly a step in the right direction, and an improvement from the high negative emotion that trended to overwhelm you in similar encounters in times gone by... I do fear that you are still delinquent on the original subject of the thread 🙁

Whilst you may find this confusion and disorientation distressing, rest assured we shall do our best to help you through it, as all good community members should do 🙂

And in your own good time, we shall receive this no doubt superb contribution with open arms when you have recovered your faculties to a sufficient degree - who knows, it could even be with your next post 😉

We believe in you dear friend, you have all our best wishes 🙂

Thanks for your ongoing support but it would be totally disrepesctful to yourself for me to deviate from your very own practices. I therefore cannot comment on the original subject of this thread as due to your fine example I should completely ignore every question asked of me. I am sure that you will understand this.
So excited for this evening and providing feedback from my new experiences.

Ah Dear friend, today might just be your lucky day 🙂

For i think we may have in fact stumbled upon the root of your confusion - where you are currently practising what you feel is imitation, with the best will in the will in the world, you have missed the fact that my initial contribution was in fact aligned with the subject of the thread 🙂

Hence the situation we find ourselves in where your initial contribution is unfortunately more aligned with a totally different topic, and is therefore quite out of place in a thread about the merits of the FPL issue at hand, and seems to be more reflective of an overwhelming fixation from which you find it particularly difficult to extricate yourself 🙂

I agree that I am replicating your practices to the letter. There can be no confusion regarding that. My initial comment on this thread was advising a fellow poster to discontinue the discussion ( fact) at which point you started hurling insults ( fact) and subsequent discussion was a consequence of these events.
I can assure you that I am strictly replicating your practices , nothing else, and therfore there is no confusion.

Ah now dear friend, the sense of deja vu no doubt becomes stronger as we progress 🙂

As flattered as I am by your choice to try to model your practises around that of someone who clearly dominates your thoughts and contributions, what did we say about imitation (or replication, or copying, or learning or whichever synonym we choose 🙂 ) earlier?

                        The sincerest form of...??

I'm sure you can compete the sentence 😉

Who knows, soon your self professed efforts at growth may even yield the result of a constructive post 😉

We eagerly await the results Dear Friend, you can do it 🙂

As promised now I have returned home from my rendezvous at the pub with a number of friends and I need to update you with the results . There were 8 of us in total comprising 4 couples ( one of them being a criminal psychiatrist who had some very firm views regarding your personality) .Unfortunately the evening was not an entire success - indeed rather the opposite.

Conversation was pleasant and civilised to begin with but then we started to discuss a major issue of the day namely Brexit. As promised I adopted your approach expressing my view that Boris had conducted negotiations as he had vowed to do so but ignored completely the views of others. This was not received too well and I was asked why I was refusing to embrace the views of anyone else. I then showed all those seated a transcript of our online discussions this afternoon and what I had learned from yours truly .
The responses I received regarding yourself went thus ( and I do paraphrase slightly in order to ensure that this is not deleted ):-
"What an effing tool he is , tell him to eff off"
"An arogant pr**K who you really should completely ignore"
"He's so far up his own hole "
"How can anyone be this this self consumed?"

The remaining 2 responses ( as my wife is far too polite to comment adversely about anyone ) are unrepeatable.
I respectfully have concluded therefore that on balance , your approach to online dialogue is (and brace yourself here ) not the ultimate way. I am aware that this will be a shocking revelation to yourself but I am sure that given an appropriate amount of time you will recover from it. I sincerely think that it would assist you greatly if you comprehend the difference between replication and imitation which would also help you with your delusion of flattery.
If there's anything I can do to assist in this process please don't hesitate to ask.
I will however follow the advice of my friends if you do not require my assistance.
                        All the best .

Why dear friend, you once again surprise me with your generosity 🙂

I do fear however that the obsession that continues to impact your ability to contribute to the opening topic of this, and countless other, threads, has now began to cast its not insubstantial shadow across other areas of your being 🙁

It is at this point that I should caution once again, that whilst I am indeed flattered, as repeatedly put forward earlier, at not just your clearly expressed desire to imitate, but also your personal evening soujorn so exquisitely detailed above - I unfortunately cannot reciprocate and therefore cannot accept the gratitudes you have so kindly and so repeatedly bestowed - once again, it is but my duty as humble FFS member 🙂

Do not despair however - for the silver lining here may be that as you progress along your ongoing journey towards acceptance of your obsession - you may in fact be beginning to make the transition forwards, away from denial, and towards anger

Whilst this may feel like a confusing and trying time dear friend, rest assured and believe, that if you can fasten your courage to the sticking place, you can succeed in your attempts to navigate this new stage in the same way you seem to have successfully ceased the denial in which you were earlier enveloped 🙂

Wishing you best as your journey progresses dear friend, we all believe in you 😉

sounds like a very decent plan. Ota -> VVD/Robbo (already have TAA) should be slightly easier for me. Salah (owner here too) to Mane is a possibility to fund it.

Advice appreciated! Generally, I try to avoid hits so thoughts welcome on the three options...

    A) 2FTs - Adrian and James > Ryan and Traore (freeing up money for Pukki>Abraham next week BUT a big risk not having Abraham)

    B) 2FTs - James and Pukki > Traore and Abraham (C) however big risk of having no goalkeeper

    C) -4 - Adrian, James and Pukki > Ryan, Traore and Abraham

Traore is obviously a gamble but he's likely to be used sporadically as a 5th mid.

Does the fact that I'd captain him impact it? Ie 8 becomes 16.
Also, the captain poll suggests he's the player most likely to be captained which means it will be damaging if he does get decent points

Chuffed I've managed to make it to final pressers before using my 2 FTs without incurring any rises or drops to relevant players. Still not 100% about whether to ditch Pukki or Haller for Wilson, think news on whether Norwich have any players back from injury will swing it.
