Man City v Arsenal postponed as ‘precaution’ amid coronavirus fears

Double Gameweek 29 is officially off. That’s because Arsenal’s rearranged trip to Manchester City has been postponed amid fears of a coronavirus outbreak.

The news comes after it was revealed on Tuesday that Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis had recent contracted COVID-19.

As the Greek side were at the Emirates Stadium for a Europa League match less than two weeks ago, it has now emerged that several Arsenal squad members met Marinakis.

These players, who have not been named, are now self-isolating at home for the remainder of the 14-day period after the meeting.

Arsenal announced the news in a statement in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“The medical advice we have received puts the risk of (these players) developing Covid-19 at extremely low. However, we are strictly following the Government guidelines which recommend that anyone coming into close contact with someone with the virus should self-isolate at home for 14 days from the last time they had contact. As a result, the players are unavailable for tonight’s match against Manchester City and the Premier League has decided the game should be postponed. The players will remain at their homes until the 14-day period expires. Four Arsenal staff – who were sitting close to Mr Marinakis during the match – will also remain at home until the 14 days are complete.” – Arsenal statement

The postponement of Wednesday night’s match means that Arsenal v Man City will need a new date once again.

It also means that Gameweek 29 has now concluded so anyone who had Kevin De Bruyne (£10.6m) in their starting line-up will see their first substitutes come in.

It also means those who took a hit for Arsenal players such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) or Nicolas Pépé (£9.2m) will have to make do with the blanks they registered against West Ham.

As things stand, Arsenal’s trip to Brighton in Gameweek 30 is still going ahead, as the self-isolating players can return to training on Friday.

“Everyone at Arsenal Football Club wishes Mr Marinakis a swift recovery and we look forward to the players and staff returning to work on Friday in preparation for our match at Brighton.” – Arsenal statement

Traore owner here, is it worth keeping for gw31 or taking another hit to field 11 (but be able to add Doherty/Jota as a 3rd Wolves player)?

Traore is no longer a safe starting option, i'd worry about 31.

Traore might start or come on as a sub, even with a 20 minute run out might get an attacking return.

If you want to sell for someone else for a -4, that person will need to get at least an assist to break even i guess.

Can you say for sure that someone will get an assist?

(FYI i am going to sell Traore, Maddy and Ings for Alli, Moura/Lamela/Antonio/Sarr and Wood for a -4)

        Have you watched Spurs lately?

I'd argue 20 minutes of Traore is better than 90 minutes of Alli

99% of people under the age of 50 who get it just experience a mild flu, which we've all had. People acting like the whole world is gonna collapse. 500,000 people died last year because of flu ffs.

Not all at the same time... The worry is more about the economy collapsing.

Death rate around 3%. Some models predict about 60% of people will get it. That would be somewhere around 120 million people dead.

      Rough numbers.

It's already improved in a number of countries who've had it for months. It's not as deadly as predicted.

The media are loving life, selling out newspapers, unprecedented traffic. Coronavirus is the number 1 searched word on google. Of course they're gonna keep scaring people. It's what they do.

Not to mention its already contained in countries like China, Japan and South Korea. New cases are steadily coming down and down. Factories are working again, and the planet went back to being destroyed. All BAU.

Youre just as bad as the end of the world crowd.
It's a new virus in humans so we don't know what it will be like
Mortality rate for those who have it is around 6% in Italy.... That's not flu.
It's also way more contagious than flu.
You don't lock down an entire portion of a country as an over reaction
I'm not panicking, but for the love of God stop rationalising it as flu

IF you are the one in five that gets this, there are not enough ventilators available now let alone when it takes hold of the country.

Even though it is a respitory complaint, those with pulmonary weakness are most at risk.

    2 obvious tips now -

    1) No hits. Games could be cancelled last minute for the next couple of weeks, getting -4 is worse than getting 0.

    2) Leave all transfers as late as possible. Value is irrelevant in these crazy times...

      Wait for this ridiculous logic.

      - Arsenal played Olympiakos 13 days ago and they had a case of COVID-19.
      - PL announced last night that City vs Arsenal is postponed because Arsenal players need 14 days of isolation and today is the 13th.
      - Within those 13 days, Arsenal have played and come into contact with West Ham + Portsmouth players; who are going to play fixtures this week...
      - All Olympiakos COVID-19 tests came back negative, meaning nobody has the virus.
      - Less than 24 hours notice, and fans won't get refunded for travel, flights and hotel booking for a game that was already re-arranged from the previous time.

      Welcome to 2020.

Yes, if PL cancelled this, by the same order of logic should cancel WestHam & Portsmouth´s fixtures as well. And any teams fixture that played those two in the same time frame.

      2. DOG GOD IT - KEANE 15
        • 10 Years

The Olympiakos players tests came back negative. Their owner was positive.

Their players incubation/isolation period is over, they were tested and negative, hence clear to play.

Arsenal's players were in contact with the owner, tomorrow will be the 14th day, so if negative, their game with Brighton this weekend should go ahead.

If one positive test result however, probably the game will be called off, and then also Westham and Portsmouth whom Arsenal played since then will probably be postponed and their players isolated pending testing.

And if any Hammer or Pompey player tests positive, those teams they played against since then will also come under scrutiny.

        Kinda like a domino effect.

Personally I'm loving the disruption that corona is giving to FPL. Makes it more interesting and fun. Stats and strategies will go out the window and a simple "is the game actually on or not" will dictate transfers. Good luck to all. Stay safe.

I can’t believe my luck at the moment. I’ll be the first to hold my hands up!

Messed my subs up as switched Taylor & Cahill around on Friday. Had Taylor covering for Robbo, now this news means I still get Cahill on for KdB. 70 points and up to 605 OR.

Also so nearly did Ings & Vardy > Long & Auba(c) -4 instead of capping Salah. Now I have two FTs and not stuck with Long to boot. Sitting tight really seems the best move this year.

I have face masks, but haven't worn them yet. The masks are supposed to be worn if you are sick e.g. coughing, to prevent YOUR Germs from flying everywhere.

However, i have been sanitizing my hands frequently (Carry a bottle in the car, one at the office, several at home) and washing also very often. This from a guy who normally seldom washes hands with soap.

The situation of multiple fixtures being postponed and EURO 2020 being postponed is becoming more likely.

If this did happen I think that the postponed PL fixtures would be played over the Summer which is after when the current season is supposed to finish.

We know that in FPL the GW deadlines never move, and this is why blank and double gameweeks are created.

So if the above did happen could it create a situation where GW38 is a gameweek in which some/all teams have multiple (probably something like 4+) games?

If this is the case it might be a good strategy to save the Bench Boost chip until gameweek 38.

Surely they move the GW deadlines. I know they've never done so in the past but there's never been disruption on this sort of scale either. Playing PL matches in the summer is unheard of and there's no reason to stick to a GW38 deadline in the middle of May if matches are going to take place in July

Spurs have only failed not to score in 1 PL home game this year, Liverpool. Man U have only kept a clean sheet at 1 PL away game this year, Chelsea.

I'm liking the look of Martial since Bernandes came on board

Would be lovely to get a proper points explosion or two out of him before the inevitable end of season positional reclass & price rise

I'm mad after the double up myself (Bruno in first to join Tony)

I'm actually looking at Maguire as part of a triple from GW32 too

So no doubt they will hit the self destruct button soon after leading us on in FPL yet again

If Pogba & Rash came back & they add a marquee forward (or maybe Greenwood accelerated development) they might actually be top 4 regulars again soon though

I think the triple will be fruitful. I'm certainly looking at it too. AWB also an option specially if he's being deployed as a wing back.

Think I'll sacrifice 1 less BGW31 players to get Martial in early. Anyways it would been Pope or defender or Antonio/Alli. Can't see much upside there.

                Woodman's an odd one though.
He had so much hype and when he got his chance it was clearly far too early for him. Was as far as you could get from a Krul-like debut. We just need Dubravka back asap!! 🙂

I think he's played 4 cup games in the past.
Don't get me wrong, he's highly rated and was very young - I wouldn't say he'd "had his chance"...
BUT, I do remember in at least one of those games he was terrible. He kept rushing out and having to slide tackle stuff away .etc

In fairness to him, this was probably prior to us having a decent defence.

Had Auba C. Otherwise captain would have been Salah.
KdB no show and Lundstram first on the bench. (12p)

Few in my ML had Mane or Salah C and no City or Arsenal players.

I'll take this, but Vardy to Auba really hurt.

      YES

It should only affect the total points. H2H, Cup, and other leagues cannot be helped. But the total points could be accrued to those that designed for this DGW. I suggest that when this game is played again, it not be included in any gameweek.

Those that have KDB, Auba, Pepe, and Sako can get points even if they don't have them in the future. This is the best way to preserve the integrity of the game. Otherwise guys that Chipped or took hits can actually be compensated for the risk. Otherwise they are wrecking many people's rank.

This is the most Just way of handing this problem.

    I sent this to FPL:

    Hi,

Just want to let you know a fair way to play the postponed Arsenal-vs-MCI game for FPL players.

I think this game should NOT be included in any new gameweek. Not as a double or triple game week or a particular game within a future gameweek.

It should be an isolated game where players that Free Hit, Wild Carded, Triple Captained, or took Trade-hits can participate in the designed manner for gameweek 29. Even if they have traded away all 15 players. The new Arsenal-MCI game should accrue points per the GW-29 formation.

This way, this game is treated in a totally fair way for all players.

    Thank You

Would this have been sent if Aubameyang had scored 5 goals vs West Ham...

Or would folk be in the space to leave an enough alone...

It's actually the eventual/delayed coming to terms with the magnitude of the Arsenal West Ham result that is causing more heartache here than the single Covid hit fixture I think

It's frustrating, but would i still be annoyed if this game was postponed had Auba scored 5 against West Ham? You're damn right i would. He could have scored another 2 against City. I don't think people would have been kicking up such a fuss but My ML rivals dont even own Auba let alone (C) him. But this is part the parcel, have to just accept it and move on.

Yeah I hear you - but would you be annoyed enough to write a letter to FPL?

Being annoyed is a natural part of any luck management game unfortunately - we'll always have acts of God - its more about how people deal/react to/let the annoyance influence things

People won (and lost!) mini leagues over the Darren Bent Beechball goal for example, people hung their hats on Kun ahead of a DGW just before he broke his ribs in a taxi in Amsterdam...

FPL, like life, is unfortunately a cruel mistress at times!

I think i agree that this is a fair comment, although the chances of it happening is absolutely slim to none, they will provide VC points and subs on completion of the gameweek (now). But if there was a way to play it in a few weeks and provide points to the 29th gameweek that would be fair enough, wont happen though.

Nice idea but who knows the amount of computer programming and development that would be needed to make that fix happen. Plus, the law of unintended consequence then kicks in if they made this change and it had another (unintended) downstream affect that needs to be addressed. So cant see anything like that happening.

I understand you are frustrated but this is the way it is. I captained Auba too, I'd have loved some more points tonight.

But these are the breaks. On the other hand you can keep Auba, Leno, KDB etc safe in the knowledge they all now have 2 upcoming doubles. They can pay you back down the road.

In the grand scheme of things trying to prevent the spread of this virus is more important than missing some points on your triple captain.

What are you both talking about? How would you be punished? The fixture was there, you chose not to use it, it should be played in this GW as it was supposed to.

At first I was afraid, I was petrified
I decided I was going all in, with DGW players in my side
But then I spent so many nights thinking what could possibly go wrong
    Until Pep spoke
KDB shouldn’t be out for long!!

    Please come back
    For the Arsenal game
I just wanted you in the line-up so you could destroy the Gunners again
At least I’ve got Aubameyang (C), surely that will be the key
If I'd known for just one second Pep would do this to me

It took all the strength I had not to fall apart
This morning I’ve woke up to a broken FPL heart
Tonight’s match has been postponed, I’m feeling sorry for myself
    I could cry
But I’m gonna’ hold my head up high and you see me
    Somebody new
I’m going to rage transfer out Auba, Aguero and Pepe too

The Coronavirus felt like dropping in and now thinks that it’s won
Well, now I'm saving all my lovin' for blank GW 31
Go on now, go, walk out the door
    Just turn around now
    'Cause you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the virus who’s tried to mess with my overall rank
    Do you think I'd crumble
Did you think I'd have nothing left in the tank?

Oh no, not I, I will survive
Oh, as long as I’ve a few chips left, I know I'll stay alive
Even though people have Lundstram and Harvey Barnes waiting as first sub
I think it’s best to log out, who’s up for the pub?
    WE WILL SURVIVE

Any rumors about some games being postponed for the weekend ? West Ham, Brighton, Arsenal maybe ?

If there were any logic to it, WHU should be postponed, but who knows.

Things are moving at such a fast pace I wouldn't rule anything out. Anyone making a transfer now is crazy.

See, how can West Ham be played if they were exposed to the sweaty arsenal players.

How can the MCI players be more important than the Brighton players.
