The winners and losers on the FPL Bonus Points System

With Premier League football suspended for the foreseeable future due to the coronavirus pandemic, any articles we produce over the coming weeks (and perhaps months) will focus less on Gameweek-to-Gameweek planning or strategies for the season run-in and more on wider issues.

A topic that is frequently raised on these pages is Fantasy Premier League’s Bonus Points System (BPS), which can leave the uninitiated bewildered.

How come Anthony Martial (£7.9m) hasn’t gained one bonus point since Gameweek 19, despite scoring in five matches after that point? Why is Federico Fernandez (£4.5m) such a BAP-magnet at Newcastle United? And why do forwards tend to accrue more bonus points than players in other positions?

We’ll address those questions and more below.

How does the Bonus Points System Work in FPL?

Long gone are the days of the ‘man in the stand’, where an independent match assessor from the Press Association would distribute bonus points based on a subjective evaluation of which three players stood out in a particular Premier League game.

Now the Bonus Points System harnesses a range of Opta statistics to create a performance score for every player involved.

The players with the three highest BPS scores in a match subsequently receive bonus points, although ties can mean that additional players also gain them.

Some of you will be familiar with the key Opta metrics that FPL use (most of which can be found in our Members Area) but, for the unversed, all of the below contribute to a player’s matchday BPS score.

All players, no matter what the position, will be affected by the performance indicators below, unless specified (e.g. goalkeepers and defenders keeping a clean sheet).

Game-time and attacking returns
Playing 1 to 59 minutes3
Playing 60+ minutes6
Goalkeepers and defenders scoring a goal12
Midfielders scoring a goal18
Forwards scoring a goal24
Assists9
Defensive Contributions
Goalkeepers and defenders keeping a clean sheet12
Saving a penalty15
Save2
For every two clearances, blocks and interceptions combined (CBIs)1
For every three recoveries1
Net successful tackles2
Attacking Contributions
Successful open play cross1
Creating a big chance (a chance where the receiving player should score)3
Key pass1
Successful dribble1
Scoring the goal that wins a match3
Pass Completion
70 to 79% pass completion (at least 30 passes attempted)2
80 to 89% pass completion (at least 30 passes attempted)4
90%+ pass completion (at least 30 passes attempted)6
Defensive Deductions
Conceding a penalty-3
Yellow card-3
Red card-9
Own goal-6
Making an error which leads to a goal-3
Making an error which leads to an attempt at goal-1
Conceding a foul-1
Attacking Deductions
Missing a penalty-6
Missing a big chance-3
Being tackled-1
Being caught offside-1
Shot off target-1

To give an example, Romain Saiss (£4.5m) was awarded maximum bonus points in Wolves’ 0-0 draw with Brighton in Gameweek 29.

His BPS score of 28 was made up of:

  • Playing 60+ minutes: 6
  • Keeping a clean sheet: 12
  • Recoveries: 3
  • CBIs: 1
  • Net tackles: 6
  • Pass completion: 4
  • Yellow cards: -3
  • Fouls conceded: -1

You can see the full breakdown in the BPS Plus and BPS Minus tabs in the Player Stats section of each match in our Members Area (Wolves v Brighton can be viewed here).

Let me explain it little bit.

The algorithm for price changes is based on number of active players and the active players now are hugely decreased, therefore less transfers will be needed for a price change!!!

Nah, Ederson is not good value. City don't get that many CS but also don't have concede that many shots so low save/bps points and don't concede many penalties either.

I think forwards get too many points for scoring a goal, and defenders and mids should get a few more.

Always thought it odd that a keeper saving a penalty is considered less bap worthy than a forward scoring a goal. The effect on the game is the same.

      1. Ginkapo FPL
        • 13 Years

If anything its a bigger deal. The keeper prevents a certain goal on his own. The forward scores a goal with help from teammates.

They should also be able to differentiate between a pen save and a miss

If mids get more bonus points for goals they should also get 4 points for the goal itself instead of 5. Those "midfielders" like Salah and Mane who are more like wide forwards make a mockery of the system. Theres a reaon those goal scoring, far forward midfielders are the best picks in the game every year. No reason to make them even better by giving them more baps too.

Sorry haven't logged in a while with all the situation - but I opened the all and saw that transfer deadlines are as normal. Does that mean I can do transfers - I don't mind shifting a couple of players that were waiting to go on a wildcard? So up until April 30th at least I can do 1 transfer per week and also leave 2 transfers to the end ( I don't think we are starting on April 30th anyway).

    Thanks and stay safe everyone

How do the transfers work? Read from official website that no points deducted as long as don’t take a hit. And there is one point gain too with a “draw”? I assume draw means you can used up your “FT”s even when other managers do not do anything?

I’ve never liked the bonus point system in FPL. The BPS players get for goals, assists and clean sheets means that it just awards more points to those who have already scored points. You scored a hat Trick!? Have 3 more points!

I’d love to see it changed to something like performance points where all the things outside of goals, assists and clean sheets are actually rewarded. Right now this doesn’t really happen, despite the BPS system trying to do so.

My preference too, I think. Bonus awarded for all other contributions other than the ones we already get points for. Puts central strikers at a disadvantage given that they tend to make fewer passes, tackles, interceptions etc, but there could be a workable solution (one BPS per shot on target, perhaps?).

Bonus points for penalty saves for keepers is the thing that really has to be changed. How many times have we seen GKs getting into the baps after conceding 2 goals in a loss just because they got a jammy irrelevant penalty save? Its laughable.

Forwards also get a bit too much for goals. Too many times where a completely invisible striker scores one goal from a tap in and steals all the baps.

Agreed on pen saves but the system is so far rigged in favour of oop mids such as Mo with extra points for goals and cs that nothing should change there.

        • 10 Years

I completely agree, those OOP mids should all be changed to forwards. I argued the same last season... If you look at heat maps its absolutely ridiculous that the likes of Salah and Mane are considered mids while players like Kane and Rashford are fowards.

Firmino is an attacking mid, Salah and Mane are forwards.

      I disagree with both.

Pen save is an unusual occasion & it's rightfully greeted by FPL IMO. Many a times pen saves turns games upside down so ....

Re Strikers, it's their job to score goals. Doesn't matter if they stay invisible. Example ?
Vardy goals earlier this season vs City.
Pure brilliance From him rightfully awarded.

      1. Brosstan
        • 10 Years
        4 years, 8 months ago

Penalty save is the least predictable occasion in the game. That is reason enough to award it with less points. Its the absolute ultimate jam and its exaggerated by awarding it with too much bonus points in addition to the points for the penalty save itself.

That said I might be biased because I havent had a penalty save in 3 years...

Callum Wilson scored a goal this season from a tap in after being gifted the ball from the gk in the 94th minute (dont remember which game) and got 2 or 3 baps. He was shite, wasteful in build up and invisible the rest of the game. That is the kind of situation where you see that strikers get too many baps for goals.

        1. Amey
          • 6 Years
          4 years, 8 months ago

          Being less predictable yes.
But awarding less bps because of that ?
          Nahhh.

Re goal scoring thing I'm happy with current rules. It's disheartening to see someone stealing bps & 95th minutes but hey ho, that's what makes it brilliant for strikers. I mean midfielders gets extra points for CS & Goals too. !! That at least tries to make even ground for all assets in a way

But, just playing devils advocate here, the bloke who scores the winning goal in the game probably deserves the most bonus as he had the biggest impact on the result.

          1. Brosstan
            • 10 Years
            4 years, 8 months ago

Bonus points are supposed to try to reflect who actually was the best player on the pitch, not who randomly had the biggest impact by scoring a jammy tap in. That's why they used to have "man in the stand" deciding who got the bonus points but it was deemed too subjective (British favorites like Rooney and Charlie Adam got the bonus points too frequently).

I think there should be a few minor tweaks. I dont mind strikers getting bonus points for scoring if they have been at least somewhat involved in the rest of the game. I think a good change could be to give strikers slightly less bonus points for scoring goals, and in return give them more for chances created and completed passes. That way an involved striker who actually has an overall good game would be more likely to get bonus points than an invisible one who scores a random tap in.

            1. Amey

              What about 442 teams ?
              Or Jose 4231 teams ?

In which strikers don't touch ball for long but gets chances per game & most probably better ones takes one of those.

So just because Aguero has 3 touches in the build up because of boring pass pass pass tiki taka he should get more bps than Ashley Barnes who wins a Knock down & then scores a goal from a cross from wing ?

Yes. If Aguero creates chances for others in addition to scoring a goal then obviously he is more worthy of the baps than a striker scoring from a header and otherwise not being involved in the game.

But creating chances already get appreciated by FPL i guess 😮

Big chance created, crosses completed, etc etc..

Goals (saving pen is like scoring one) what matters IMHO buddy. 🙂

Rubbish imo. Bonus points should be awared for the standout players. Sadly man in the stand will never return..the baps system is utter dross from top to bottom

              This.

Someone who scores a goal is already rewarded for their goal by getting the goal points anyway. I'd love a return to the man in the stand.

Do they still give - baps for hitting the goddam post and cross bar. What a load of shite.

Remember when Jesus came on for about 3 minutes and ball hit him and deflected into the net and he got the full 3 baps 😆

This is why the man in the stand is better. Only a human can determine if a shot was crap or not. Stats can't determine that.

What I find odd is the fact that a goal line clearance by a player, could potentially be saving the CS points for the rest of his team (well the Def & Mid anyway)
They are as important as a goal scored at the other end as far as I’m concerned - especially in that scenario.

Anyone know what a "recovery" is for a goalkeeper? Apparently Pope has loads of these. Is it gathering a spilled shot?

I *think* it covers an array of things. Crosses caught, diving on loose balls etc.

      Opta definition of a recovery:

"This is where a player recovers the ball in a situation where neither team has possession or where the ball has been played directly to him by an opponent, thus securing possession for their team."

Getting started with study and making a routine is the hardest. Once you can do this and stick to it it gets easier but tougher if you've not assignments, quizzes or ither deadlines to meet. Avoid the distractions if you're trying to study, easier said than done. Turn off your phone, tablet. Disconnect the broadband on your laptop or PC and get the head thinking, either typing or writing stuff. Take regular breaks and get into the fresh air for a while. Even one hour done today is a start rather than the 'Another day wasted' feeling at the end of the day. 🙂

              That was great advice.

I don't have any assignments/exam's thankfully. The study i mentioned was to update myself in the field i work (data science) & land a new/polished job from one i am doing currently 😀
But things you've said are applicable to that too !!

Actually i do get time from working from Home stuff. But with all this negative vibes around its bloody difficult. I have less problems i guess so finding some would think so. But it's genuine situation.

Thanks again mate. Stay safe 🙂

Some timely escapism in The English Game. Definitely a good starting point in looking into how the game started.

Are there going to be problems with loan deals - aren't most of those legal contracts which expire at the original end of season date?

So could e.g. Man U refuse to let Hendo play for SHU after that date?

    1. HashAttack
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 8 months ago

Just found a Daily Mail article from 3 days ago ... a lot of non-loan players have their contracts expiring too:

After June 30, those players who are out of contract would no longer be obliged to play for their clubs.

Udo Onwere, partner and head of sport at law firm Bray and Krais Solicitors, who has dealt with numerous Premier League player contracts, told Sportsmail: 'Clubs will try to be creative but once June 30 hits the player no longer has any obligation to perform - that's bottom line. The player has all the power in this scenario.'

One silver lining is that players who are in on loan, such as Manchester United striker Ighalo, could have their short-term deals renewed with relative ease, if all parties are willing. But there could be complications over loan rules, with the number of loan signings each club can make per season limited by the Premier League.
