Greenwood v Rashford, van Aanholt’s injury and why Martial missed out on bonus

Crystal Palace 0-2 Manchester United

  • Goals: Marcus Rashford (£8.9m), Anthony Martial (£8.4m)
  • Assists: Bruno Fernandes (£9.1m), Rashford
  • Bonus: Rashford x3, Victor Lindelof (£5.3m) x2, David de Gea (£5.3m) x1

Marcus Rashford (£8.9m) bagged his first double-digit Fantasy Premier League haul since January as Manchester United secured a vital three points at Selhurst Park on Thursday evening.

The Red Devils were far from their best and Crystal Palace were vastly improved but the outcome for Fantasy managers was much the same, with United’s three most-expensive assets – Rashford, Bruno Fernandes (£9.1m) and Anthony Martial (£8.4m) – sharing 26 points between them in south London.

Mason Greenwood‘s (£4.9m) owners were left empty-handed for the second successive match, however, with the value-for-money forward again on the periphery.

Greenwood, who came into this match as an injury doubt, managed just one scuffed shot and barely lasted 60 minutes against the Eagles before being withdrawn by his manager.

In all honesty, Greenwood didn’t look fully fit, and the dream scenario for his owners now will be for a breather in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea before a return to the first-team fold in Gameweek 37+.

He wasn’t alone in looking short of his best.

United’s schedule and Solskjaer’s resistance to resting key players may be beginning to catch up with the Red Devils, with even Fernandes and Paul Pogba (£8.3m) appearing sapped of energy at times.

Rashford was in jet-heeled mood, however, and having started the post-lockdown era looking arguably the rustiest of United’s front four, he is now hitting his stride.

His deadlock-breaking goal was beautifully taken on the stroke of half-time and his lay-off for Martial’s 77th-minute strike was perfectly weighted, with only the width of the post having denied him an earlier assist for Fernandes.

Rashford’s 12-point return brought his post-lockdown points-per-match average narrowly above Greenwood’s, which illustrates just how well the teenager has been doing of late:

Solskjaer said of his side’s slow-burner of a display and their fitness levels:

The goals with Marcus and Anthony were just a joy to watch. The goals were great and we know they can do that at any moment. It’s exciting to watch, it’s exciting to coach, it’s exciting to see them want to be better, want to improve – so it’s great. We’ve created chances, scored more goals.

We last the game, so you can see towards the end we’re fitter and stronger. The last 20, 25 minutes were the best ones for us – before then it took some time to get going, but I’m very happy.

Those of us who opted for a United defender as part of a triple-up may be cursing our judgement, what with Rashford and co wreaking havoc at the other end of the field.

Still, this was a fourth clean sheet in seven post-lockdown matches – only their cross-city rivals, who have played a game extra, have racked up more shut-outs than that in the last month.

Bookings for Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.5m) and Harry Maguire (£5.3m) took the shine (and a point) off their defensive returns and there was more excruciating ‘nearly’ moments in the opposition box for Maguire, with the galumphing stopper thrice getting on the end of Fernandes deliveries without success.

Maguire at least completed the game to bank five points, having earlier taken a bang to the head and undergone on-field assessment.

Elsewhere on the injury front, Luke Shaw (£5.3m) and Brandon Williams (£3.9m) missed out with ankle and head injuries respectively, leading to a first United start in three years for Timothy Fosu-Mensah (£4.5m) – a player previously so out in the cold that he wasn’t even priced by FPL ahead of kick-off.

Palace also now have problems at left-back, with Patrick van Aanholt‘s (£5.6m) season over and his availability for the start of 2020/21 in doubt.

The Dutchman landed awkwardly in the build-up to United’s second goal and his manager confirmed after the full-time whistle that he had dislocated his shoulder in the fall:

He’s dislocated his shoulder, so it’s a bad injury. It’s going to keep him out for a long period of time. I fear it’s going to require an operation and that’s really bad news for us. We might be starting next season without him.

Tyrick Mitchell (£4.0m) could be about to enter the budget FPL defender radar for the last two Gameweeks, then, although the return to fitness of Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.4m) gives Hodgson a more senior alternative in that position.

Palace’s improved display was probably not what owners of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ assets wanted to see, with those two clubs meeting at Molineux on Monday.

The Eagles saw a penalty shout waved away before a Jordan Ayew (£5.1m) strike was chalked off for a marginal offside, and the fact that David de Gea (£5.3m) registered five saves – the most he had made in 23 league games – and walked away with a bonus point was a testament to the hosts’ efforts.

Hodgson said of his side’s performance:

Certainly, we are not fortunate at the moment. The gods of fortune are not smiling on us with certain decisions.

We have won games and got good results against top teams like Manchester United playing a lot worse than we did tonight.

Palace remain towards the bottom of our Season Ticker and far from our thoughts but they’ll nevertheless have a bit of a say in the FPL run-in, with Wolves and Spurs’ attackers hoping for the Gameweek 35+ incarnation to turn up rather than the plucky losers of Thursday.

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Guaita; Ward, Dann, Sakho, Van Aanholt (Mitchell 84′); McCarthy (Riedewald 83′), Milivojevic, McArthur (Schlupp 72′); Townsend, Ayew, Zaha .

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Fosu-Mensah; McTominay (Matic 62′), Pogba; Greenwood (Lingard 62′), Fernandes, Rashford; Martial.

29 points ahead of ML rival and thinking of doing Salah + Jesus -> Sterling and Ings for -4 to block him.

We will both FH in 38+.

    Main differentials

    Him: Pulisic + Mahrez
    Me: Jiménez + Foden

(Bar any transfers he does ofc)

Go for it? Big cash prize

I don't like the hit...you'd basically be starting 25pts ahead and that could easily get halved by his diffs going into an unpredictable gw38+.

Maybe just Salah -> Sterling, or do you need the city spot?

        • 8 Years

I need the city spot, correct.

I feel his differentials won’t be able to chase 25 points. But Sterling and Ings could easily chase down 29pts, I reckon..

Cutting of the tails of the distribution 😉

I got 17k last season, 70k season before and currently at 65k. I think the three biggest tips are:

      1) Nail the captaincy every week - not something you should be punting on, use other squad players as your differentials

      2) Don't be afraid to move around the big hitters, as Lateriser12 on Twitter ofter phrases it always chase the biggest upside. The premiums are the ones most likely to haul and send you up the ranks so play off them

      3) Keep your eye on the main stats but also try to watch as many games as possible (or at least highlights) in order to give the stats more content

You're still doing well to get into the top 100K
Top 10k takes a whole season of being on the right players at the right times, some luck, and consistently good captain choices.
Keep plugging away and one season it'll happen

You're talking about the top 0.01% and a factor of ten top. 0.001% of teams entered.

Just think about that statistically, as there is more readily available data and players it will only get harder.

      My previous seasons have been - 1,8k 2k 15k and 35k

      My ground rules are:
      - To take few hits
      - Plan at least 2 (preferably 3-4) game weeks ahead
      - Not chase the punts too much - Not get too focused on one GW. (Like this one with Chelsea)
      - Save chips for the end for doubles and when you know the teams better

    7. bench boost for every gamew…

i have been in the top 10k once, last year with 3 or 4 gameweeks left. Then something happened in my life and i made some decisions that i really should not have done. This year i´m 26k now with 2 weeks remaining. last year i did not understand why i got so high up in the ranks as i did not do anything special but i guess timing on certain players, a little bit of luck and having a more settled strategy which was more flexible than previous years might helped. Strange though, but this season where i have been at 3.3m actually feels like my best season in terms of have i have played, my decisions etc. At the same time, i missed one of those crucial points turn in gw 5 i think it was, and one or two lesser events where i was on the wrong side of things. I know why, and even when you know why things like that are difficult to avoid.

Trying to have a team that kind of mitigates any major events that happens is what my strategy is, so that in any gameweek if my captain fails or one or two players outside my team hauls, if you still be able to have a team that survives those (which will happen from time to time) this is maybe one way of securing a spot inside 100k. This sounds simple enough, but it involves a little bit of planning and attention to your own team, like identifying weak spots in your team in advance.

Not sure this was helpful at all...

example; that week when Sterling hauled and Antonio got that 26 pointer i still without both of them got a gameweek rank of 500k. How? By sticking with my midfield choices and with the strategy to target Bou defense and norwich toothless attack and left hand side weakness i went for Vardy and Fredericks, so while the few that had Antonio cheered for his 26 pointer i was getting 11 from a 4.4 defender. Having a five man midfield one of them got 13, and with a cap on Vardy my team strength in all positions, combined with some decisions and planning kind of mitigated not having Sterling or Antonio.

Point is, trying to minimize the damages that can happen to your rank with a strategy and plan combined with decisions and a bit of luck is one way to get close to 10k, as difficult it thus sound

      I’ve had a 4k & 8k finish in the last 5 years, plus 10.2k and 11.3k as well. The other season I finished 390k.

The big difference was captaincy, and then when it started to unravel I tried chasing and taking unnecessary hits. Basically, big tips would be
      - generally play it safe with the captain
      - plus whilst hits can occasionally work out if your squad is really struggling, unless it’s towards the end of the season, try view any hits as a 3 to 4 gameweek move. Don’t generally do them for a one week punt!

Got 1 FT and feel my biggest upgrade is actually my keeper, but is that a waste at this point (only 1 week punt, FH in 38)
    Current team:

    Foster
    TAA - Doherty - Saiss
    KDB - Fernandes - Mahrez - Martial - Foden
    Rashford - Ings

    Button - Ings - Kiko - Lascelles

What would be a better impact move? Maybe Vardy to Wood and bench Foden?

I hope United rotate for Chelsea. The West Ham & Leicester games are far too important to gamble with, and the players look tired.

A 352 with James & Ighalo up front could be effective against Chelsea. The system worked well against the big sides this season, hitting on the counter with pace.

I cant see it happening, I dont think Ole is the type to rotate in big games unless forced to. Apparently Maguire played through January with a hip injury and took pain killer injections just to get through each game! (The Athletic)

I think Ole's old school in that he values the cup - a trophy is a trophy - momentum is important etc, fully expect to see the same side starting - Rashford Martial Greenwood Pogba Fernandes

I don't think all the 5 will start. They are already looking exhausted and we need them in PL more than the cup.

I feel bruno , martial, Pogba get their rest

Utd and Chelsea should both rotate. FA Cup = FA Crap.

    Martinez (Foster)
    VVD Doherty Boly
    KDB Mahrez Martial Fernandes Antonio
    Jiminez Rashford (DCL)

G2G? 1FT 0.5 ITB. No chips so ideally would like to save 2FT for 38, but if there's a move with big upside that I can't see?

    Thinking:
    A) VVD > someone
    B) Is it worth keeping Mahrez or move to someone else with a high ceiling?
    C) DCL > Wood and bench Antonio this week, but then benching problem in 38 (BUR vs bri, WHU vs AVL)

What to do with this lot? Have lost a 65 pt lead in my ML since restart and now in 3rd place 4pts behind.
    Have 1 FT, no chips.

    Pope
    Saiss, Doherty, TAA
    KDB, Salah, Son, Fernandes, Foden
    Rashford, Jimi, Greenwood.

Do i go aggressive and take a points hit to mix it up?

Team looks good to me. If I were you I would save this week and maybe take -4 hit next week (3 changes).

Thanks Polska for the advice, much needed at this stage. Been on the ropes the last few weeks both players behind me cpt Sterling for 42pts against Brighton which really hurt.
Nxt week thinking ditch TAA, Foden and Salah and go with cheap defender, Sterling + Mahrez or maybe take out Jimi and get Wood... not sure yet.

Chelsea need a CB (to partner Rudiger)
Man City need a CB (to partner Laporte)

Chelsea need a CB and CM. Then relegate all the British players to the second team:

        Kepa
        Azpi Rudiger ???? Alonso
        Kovacic ???? Kante
        Ziyech Werner Pulisic

        Caballero

Koulibaly is quite overhyped. There are many good CB that can be available at better prices.
I'd prefer LFC going for Škriniar. 24-year-old and bettermoulded for a Klopp team

I know I'm early, but how does this draft FH for 38 look?
    Pope
    TAA Digne tark
    Salah Bruno martial Antonio dilva
    Jesus haller
    Martin greenwood pieters Thomas

Unsure about double man u mids against Leicester but reluctant to drop either.

My first take is... If you played Martinez instead of Pope and put GK fodder on the bench you could have Ings instead of Haller. You’ve already got Burnley def and Arsenal/Southampton both have a good fixtureS. Otherwise looks solid.

Totally get why you don’t want to drop the United mids I’m thinking of keeping them on a FH myself.

    A) Vardy/Pulisic for Ings/KdB (-4)
    B) Vardy to Auba
    C) Aurier to Doc
