Pre-Season

The best budget FPL goalkeepers for 2020/21

It is slim pickings in the budget goalkeeper category of Fantasy Premier League this season.

Ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, 31 different shot-stoppers have been priced up at £4.5m or under, but in 2019/20, just two of these scored more than 60 FPL points.

Still, in a season where there is an ominous cluster of premium midfielders priced above £10.5m, as well as some pricey forwards, the £4.5m goalkeepers could be more important than ever.

At the time of writing, three goalkeepers priced £4.5m or below have double-digit ownership, so we’ve looked at the best ones and a few to avoid at first.

£4.0m Bench Fodder

There are just seven goalkeepers in the hallowed £4.0m bracket for the start of 2020/21 and, unfortunately, only a very small selection of them look likely to get minutes this season.

Just three of these shot-stoppers registered any minutes in the Premier League last season, namely David Martin (£4.0m), Ørjan Nyland (£4.0m) and Jed Steer (£4.0m).

It would take a particularly unfortunate injury crisis for West Ham to call on Martin’s services, especially after they re-signed Darren Randolph (£4.5m) in January.

The Republic of Ireland international is now the second-in-line to Lukas Fabianski (£5.0m) at the London Stadium, after Martin and Roberto (£4.5m) struggled to impress during their fleeting appearances during 2019/20.

By contrast, the right sort of injury crisis has already happened at Villa, potentially unlocking one of Nyland or Steer as viable £4.0m options. They certainly have the best chance of anyone else at this price point.

Tom Heaton‘s (£4.5m) long-term anterior cruciate ligament issue, sustained in January, and Pepe Reina’s return to AC Milan, and likely move to Valencia has left Villa’s goalkeeper pecking order wide open.

While the former Burnley man would be first-choice if fit, the latest rumours indicate he is still a little way off match fitness, even if the Birmingham Mail did report a return to training on August 17.

In the likely even that Heaton is not ready for the start of the new campaign, and no new goalkeepers arrive at Villa Park, Dean Smith will have to pick between Nyland and Steer for his initial first-choice. Something to watch out for in any pre-season friendlies.

While Nyland played more Premier League minutes than any other currently priced £4.0m goalkeeper in 2019/20 (537), and is currently in 17.3% of teams, he did not exactly impress during Project Restart.

Meanwhile, when Heaton was first injured, Steer was the man Smith turned to instead of Nyland after he helped Villa to an impressive run of wins and clean sheets en route to the Championship play-off final in 2018/19. The only reason Steer did not feature more often last season was because he himself got injured eight minutes into deputising for Heaton and missed the rest of the campaign. Mostly recovered from that knock now, Steer could be one to consider as bench fodder in the event he features in some pre-season outings.

Last season’s go-to £4.0m option David Button (£4.0m) remains a relatively popular choice at this bracket, although is currently owned by roughly half as many as Nyland.

The Brighton man remains unlikely to start on merit but, unlike many of the other £4.0m options, it would only take an injury to one goalkeeper for him to get in the team, in this case Mat Ryan (£4.5m).

Fantasy managers are unlikely to get anywhere with Kamil Miazek (£4.0m) at Leeds or Fulham’s Fabri (£4.0m), neither one featuring for their respective clubs at all in league games last season.

Bailey Peacock-Farrell (£4.0m) is one of many understudies to Nick Pope (£5.5m), perhaps one to watch if the England international leaves the club but, since releasing Joe Hart (£4.5m), Sean Dyche has brought in Will Norris and Marc Richter as further back-up options.

Potential set-and-forgets

Ryan has emerged as a front-runner in the £4.5m department, currerntly owned by 25.5% of managers at this current stage.

When sorting goalkeepers priced at £4.5m or under by total points from 2019/20, the Brighton man comes out on top, his score of 135 comfortably ahead of the second-placed Alex McCarthy (£4.5m).

Of these options, Ryan was top for clean sheets (nine), saves (117, compared to McCarthy’s 79) and bonus (14).

It is a mixed start to 2020/21 for the Seagulls but with save potential, there is perhaps little to be afraid of for the home matches against Chelsea and Manchester United while trips to Newcastle, Everton and Crystal Palace carry clean sheet potential too.

McCarthy is the only other £4.5m goalkeeper with more than 60 FPL points from last season and is potentially capable of outscoring Ryan in 2020/21.

Considering that Angus Gunn (£4.5m) was initially Southampton’s first-choice goalkeeper last season, McCarthy’s tally was accumulated in 28 appearances rather than Ryan.

As a result, the former Reading man averaged 3.7 points per game in 2019/20, slightly superior to the 3.5 points per game offered by Ryan.

Seven clean sheets for McCarthy worked out at 0.2 per game, the same as Ryan, while his minutes per save (31.1) was slightly worse than the Australian’s (29.2).

Like Brighton, Southampton have some of the better fixtures from a defensive perspective at the start of the season.

They face Crystal Palace, Burnley and Chelsea on the road while Spurs, West Brom and Everton are all set to come to St Mary’s between now and Gameweek 6.

We also include Heaton in this category because, if he is fit for the start of 2019/20, it is hard not to consider the Villa man in rotation with another budget option to cover the blank in Gameweek 1.

“Actually, (recovering from injury is) going really well if I’m honest. I know it’s, obviously, a difficult time, but for me, the timing of (the pandemic), sort of worked in my favour. I’d just finished the medical point of view, obviously you don’t stop getting the hands on treatment from the physios but it was just coming to a bit less at that point. I was moving into a strength phase, just as we got locked down. I’m pleased with my progress, it’s feeling good. No complaints at all. I’ve been able to maximise the time and with not a lot else to do, I’ve just been blasting the rehab. Getting down to do my gym work at 6.30 in the morning, couple of hours and I’m away.” – Tom Heaton, speaking in May 2020

Newly-Promoted £4.5m Options

As we referenced in our profile of the Leeds defence earlier this summer, there is still some uncertainty over who will hold down the number one jersey at Elland Road this season.

Kiko Casilla (£4.5m) played 36 times last season but missed the end of the campaign due to a racism ban.

Illan Meslier (£4.5m) filled his spot admirably and has since made his loan move from Lorient permanent. But until Casilla’s future at the club is confirmed, now that he has served his ban, it is hard to guarantee which goalkeeper will start for Leeds this season.

While West Bromwich Albion defensive assets have historically been useful to Fantasy managers, this latest squad may not be as reliable as those of yesteryear.

Sam Johnstone (£4.5m) is the nailed-on number one option at the Hawthorns but the Baggies only recorded 14 clean sheets en route to Championship promotion, eight short of Leeds United’s total and seven fewer than Sheffield United managed in 2018/19.

Johnstone hasn’t missed a single league game since joining the Baggies from Manchester United in July 2018.

A total of 111 saves made was 20 higher than Leeds’ two shot-stoppers managed combined but seven fewer than Fulham’s goalkeeping duo recorded.

Saves rather than clean sheets also look to be the most likely source of points for Marek Rodak (£4.5m) at Fulham.

The Cottagers did keep 17 clean sheets in the last season but, alarmingly conceded more goals on their own soil (26) than eight other Championship clubs in 2019/20.

Despite sharing a price point with Rodak, Marcus Bettinelli (£4.5m) played just 13 of a possible 46 league matches last season before Rodak took his spot.

Big-Six Back-Ups and Potential Starters

Emiliano Martínez (£4.5m) is the most likely of the £4.5m goalkeepers at a big-six club to start between the posts in Gameweek 1.

The former Reading loanee was particularly impressive when deputising for the injured Bernd Leno (£5.0m) during Project Restart, registering more saves than anyone else, with a total of 35.

That led to three clean sheets for Arsenal between Gameweeks 30+ and 38+, the same number as Liverpool, while both clubs also conceded 12 goals.

With plenty of encouraging signs in the Gunners’ defence ahead of 2020/21, there could be plenty of interest in Martínez if he can hold onto that starting berth. Thankfully, we will get to see a competitive Arsenal line-up in the Community Shield final later this month.

Adrián (£4.5m) remains the understudy to Alisson (£6.0m) at Liverpool so Fantasy managers will need the Brazilian to suffer another injury if a cheaper option is to open up in the Reds’ defence.

That said, the former West Ham man hardly lived up to his hype in 2019/20, scoring just 27 points across his 11 Premier League appearances last season, keeping just two clean sheets and averaging just 1.6 saves per game.

Paulo Gazzaniga (£4.5m) and Joe Hart (£4.5m) are the back-ups at Spurs and, with the latter only joining the club in the last week, bringing a wealth of experience, it is hard to know which of them would step up to the plate if Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) were to pick up an injury.

While still listed in the game, Claudio Bravo (£4.5m) is to be avoided, his red flag indicating the fact that his Manchester City contract has now expired.

Top-Half Understudies

There is very little to offer in this section of the goalkeeper pool this season.

Jonas Lössl (£4.5m) and Virgínia (£4.5m) are firmly behind Jordan Pickford (£5.0m) at Everton, while

Danny Ward (£4.5m) is unlikely to depose Kasper Schmeichel (£5.5m) at Leicester any time soon.

The arrival of Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) at Sheffield United probably rules out Simon Moore (£4.5m) and Wes Foderingham (£4.5m) and Rui Patrício (£5.5m) retains a stronghold on the Wolves goalkeeper slot ahead of John Ruddy (£4.5m) and Matija Sarkic (£4.5m).

The same is also true of Randolph and Roberto at West Ham, while  Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) started just three games last season; Vicente Guaita (£5.0m) making 35 appearances for Crystal Palace.

      That is pretty template tbh.

You have 11 of the most popular FFS first XI picks:

      GK: McCarthy, Ryan, Martinez, Lloris
DF: TAA, Robbo, VVD, Doherty, Tierney, Stevens, Egan, Davies, Dier, Saliba, Justin, Ayling, Manquillo, KWP, Vinagre
MF: Auba, Mane, Salah, Son, Pulisic, Willian, Ziyech, ASM, Armstrong, Soucek

Vardy's still on fire (ended last season really well) and they seem to be refreshing the squad with new signings if rumours are to be believed. Doesn't look great overall though, especially with the added burden of Europe. Teams entering Europe after being out for a long time very rarely do well in the first half of the season.

Regardless of nailed or not. He is a terrible pick

5m for a defender with basically no attacking threat is a waste. Was a different player poch bit under mourinho system he is just not allowed to get forward.

Add to that spurs dont keep many clean sheets. That could change but no atracking returns and no baps

      I'm on A atm.

I like Tierney and when fixtures turn he's an easy transfer to Doherty, who I also want.

And although Kane was better at the end of last season he still wasn't at the level that previously made him such a valuable FPL pick. Plus Chelsea are a more attacking side than Mou's spurs.

I disagree, I believe Davies is nailed because Mourinho loves his reliability and consistency. Has played every game he's been available for. We'll learn more in the friendlies but I'm confident the PL is Davies' competition, he may be rotated with Sessengon in the cups.

When Aurier plays he doesn't, Mourinho has him sit back and drop in with the defenders in a back 3 at LCB. Doesn't really go forward. However I expect Spurs to keep 6+ CS in the first 8-10 so I'm not bothered about attacking returns, especially for a 5.0 defender. He may play further forward if Aurier leaves but that's up in the air for now.

Jose loves Dier, he's like his midfield general on the pitch. Has played 90 for him every match since the restart besides when suspended. I keep expecting him to get dropped for Sanchez as he's been a slight liability when I watch him but for now he looks really nailed. I wouldn't be 100% on either one now - though I lean towards Davies as I feel he's more nailed - but instead monitor Spurs business and next friendly closely.

Have you seen Andy's recent LTFPL video on cheap defenders? It's very good. The £5m defenders are definitely being overlooked.

You'll get more from your BB in a double GW, true. But if you're combining it with a wildcard then you're having to play that WC the week before the DGW instead of directly for the DGW itself. Which is a potential disadvantage if injuries occur or different players make themselves look essential.

Whereas if you use it GW1 then you're essentially wildcarding and BBing in the same week, so have the most up to date info.

Generally the difference between a SGWBB and a DGWBB won't be that different anyway in pure points terms.

    KDB 15/16 = 10.0m
    KDB 16/17 = 10.5m
    KDB 17/18 = 10.0m
    KDB 18/19 = 10.0m
    KDB 19/20 = 9.50m
    KDB 20/21 = 11.5m

Did it really take him all those years at Manchester City for him to get into the swing of things or was last season simply an outlier?

If it was folks then we're not only guilty of chasing points but we're also culpable of pouring at least 1.0m down the toilet.

hate city, but what are you trying to say? he was injured in 18/19 and already got close to 200 points the years before that anyway, last season then his best season with like 30+ attacking returns - price rise. if he gets no injuries, he can repeat that. now on pens as well, best midfielder in the world imo - ergo: justified!

I tend to agree with all of this. He didn’t even over perform last season as I felt he could have easily had more. How many chances were missed that he created. Now on penalties for the whole season. (pretty sure he didn’t start last season with them)

        1. Goonsquad245
          • 8 Years

He really over performed last season though. xA was about level with actual assists, big big relative overperformance on goals scored vs xG.

And before people say he’s so good xG doesn’t matter for him, Messi only outruns xG by 30% or so across the past 6 years or so.

          1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
            • 14 Years

For a player like KDB who isn't scoring literally 50 goals a season (I. E. Like Messi) all it takes is one or two of his long range screamers and one or two DFK's and he's literally busting his XG by 60/70% on a season

Or another way to look at it - quantity of goals will make that (Messi's percentage) a bad/inappropriate comparator on which to base an expectation of regression for KDB

Instead of looking at the percentage Messi exceeds it by - look at the amount of goals he exceeds it by (Messi has scored 280 goals in the last 6 seasons from an XG of 215... would give a 30% over performance - that's 65 goals, or 11 goals a season on average above his XG)

KDB scored 13 goals from an XG of 7.4 - which even though it looks large /bananas on a percentage basis - that's only 5.6 goals above his XG which as per above is eminently doable for a player with his role...

            1. Goonsquad245
              • 8 Years
              4 years, 3 months ago

I think the comparator is fine. Over 5 seasons the 13 goals from 7.4xG becomes 65 from 37 which gets crazier the longer time frame you look at it over. Really don’t like the comparison of overall goals/goals per season, because that’s obviously linked to the differences in xG itself. If I score 3 goals from an xG of 0.4, is that sustainable performance because it’s only 2.6 goals above my xG?

It’s the Greenwood fallacy all over again (but nowhere near to the same level, I’ll admit that).

Yes, KDB might do the same again this year, but last season was towards the top end of his performance variation, not the middle or the bottom.

              1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
                • 14 Years
                4 years, 3 months ago

For a skilled free kick taker like KDB - yes absolutely - a free kick outside the box is close to zero XG, yet KDB could score 2 to 3 of those a season (he scored 1 this season so is probably underperforming)....

I would say the top end his performance variation there would actually be scoring 4 or 5 DFKs... The long range screamers he’s equally capable of will add another 2-3 of XG delta per season...

Overall he’s easily capable of scoring 5,6 even 7 above his XG on a season - he’s just that good, and using Messi’s XG percentage will just create a false expectation of regression that’s not an really appropriate comparison for that type of player

Did he over perform his XG percentage? Yes

But more importantly - Is he good enough and is his role structured such that he can continue to score 11 goals in a season? For me the answer is easily yes

                1. Goonsquad245
                  • 8 Years
                  4 years, 3 months ago

Problem with this is, variance means we’ll never know. If he had exactly the same stats as he had last year, I’d expect him to regress in his output, but he might not. The top of the bell curve is certainly to the left of his actual performance last season though, which was my point when I replied to someone saying KDB didn’t overperform last season. He did. Even if you look at outside vs inside the box xG in isolation (and I will concede that KDB has a higher % of outside the box shots than Messi which affects levels of sustainable over performance, although it’s less then you’d think), he’d have to be a lot better than Messi at both to sustain his performance on the whole.

If his stats change, then who knows. For example, he apparently only took 11 DFKs last season (I can’t believe that but it’s there in black and white) from which he scored 1, which is about right. If Dilva moving on etc means he takes more like 30 this season, I’d expect him to score a couple more, obviously. He probably also takes a few more pens than he did last season, too. There’s something in that for sure, I’m not saying he’s a bad option at all, but my original reply was based on last seasons performance vs his stats.

                    • 14 Years

I think it’s more just a caveat/qualification to the “he really overperformed last season though” comment to view it through an FPL lense

Yes, from a purely statistical (I.e. non-FPL perspective), he overperformed his XG by 5.6...

But so did Messi (by 65 goals over the last 6 years) so did Auba this season (by 7.25...) So did Greenwood (by 7.1)... so did Ings (by 5.7) so did Kane (by 5.5) etc etc

Players are easily capable of overshooting their XG by 3,4,5 even 6,7,8 - it’s when you start getting up to higher absolute numbers of goals that’s when it starts getting unsustainable (although Messi being Messi is actually managing to sustain a double digit absolute XG over performance, and over 6 years too!)

Looking at the statistics in isolation the overperformance is there - but from an FPL perspective would I wouldn’t really consider it relevant or have it put me off KDB etc

It’s the percentage overperformance that matters in the long run though. Messi is able to outperform his by so much because his xG is so high to begin with. Same story with Auba/Ings/Kane to a lesser extent. Comparing the absolute numbers is just wrong IMO.

Over a short time period yes they’re capable of outperforming it by a lot (13 goals from 7xG etc) but that doesn’t extrapolate over the long run, ever.

If you don’t want to consider it relevant, that’s up to you and is a perfectly valid standpoint. I can see the arguments for that for KDB more than any other player tbh.

I actually disagree with that for FPL purposes though

For FPL purposes using the XG percentage of a 50 goal a season striker is just going to create a lot of unrealistic & misleading expectations (regression for example) when used to compare with a 10 goal a season central midfielder, or (even moreso) with a 5 goal a season attacking defender

And those unrealistic & misleading expectations will domino into sub optimal FPL decision making

The likes of TAA & VVD will comfortably outperform their XG by 2 or 3 on a season - which on a percentage basis will look even worse than KDB’s overperformance - but doesn’t make it any less sustainable - their roles in the team (from DFK’s and attacking corners respectively) will ensure that...

Similarly, KDB’s 10 DFKs this season, on another season could easily yield 2 or 3 goals - there’s easily headroom for even more overperformance there

So definitely, whilst overperformance vs XG can & does exist, when it’s at low absolute values, as we said earlier in mid-single digits for example, (rather than high percentages) it’s not going to make KDB, TAA, VVD any less appealing as FPL prospects, and could lead to seriously sub-optimal decision making from an FPL perspective

Will they? How much do you think TAA outperformed his by last season? What about VVD the season before? Do you think VVD has vastly improved his attacking threat from corners last season compared to the season before?

I didn’t say there wasn’t headroom for more overperformance, when is there ever not in a game with such variance?

It’s a long run expectation thing, if you think it’s a sub optimal way to look at it, that’s your lookout. I’m expecting regression from a purely relative (%) xG over performance perspective. Again, that was my response targeted in my first reply - it’s my belief that KDB did in fact over perform last season. Whether that translates to this season (he could increase his expected output via more DFKs/pens/different role etc) is a different matter entirely.

Yeah did VVD not outperform his XG by a couple this season & same last season for example?

His baseline XG is going to be 1 or 2 at most as he exists on scraps all season from corners, yet he’ll still pop up with 4 or 5 goals fairly reliably...

Again, using Messi’s 30% XG overperformance on 50 goals a season as a cap for a defender who attacks corners, a defender who takes free kicks or a midfielder who can shoot from range & hit DFK’s is going to lead to sub optimally viewing those players future prospects from an FPL perspective

So again, yes KDB overperformed on the specific statistic - but the specific statistic (in this case XG overperformance %) really does need to be divorced from the FPL decision making process - for KDB, and for other fairly substantial swathes of the player base we select from

This season - 5G from 2.96 xG, previous season 4G from 3.51xG. Before that - he underperformed.

Variance in play there for me, so who knows. No real evidence that he outperforms it by such a huge amount (2 or 3 goals in absolute terms) long term though.

TAA 4G from about 3xG this season. Again, no huge overperformance in relative terms. 3 goals from 23 DFKs, which is on the high side for a very good DFK taker in fact...

It’s OK saying the same thing over and over, but I never actually suggested using that cap for either TAA or VVD. It’s obviously a lot more relevant for KDB than it is for either of those. I do believe there will be some level of realistic, measurable long term over performance benchmark for those two, too, but it’s less relevant because attacking returns are a smaller part of their appeal.

We’re never going to fundamentally agree on this - I think it’s very relevant but potential reasons for changes in *expected* output need to be considered as I tried to outline in the last post.

Yeah tbf I don’t think we’ve really progressed from a couple of hours ago - Other than re-circling the facts that KDB overperformed, Messi’s 30% overperformance actually does looks like an unrealistic comparator as a ceiling for the sustainable overperformance of certain other types of players (KDB included) and KDB’s aforementioned overperformance isn’t something that’s even materially relevant when it comes to forward looking FPL decision making 🙂

The members area might also be acting up - where are you sourcing your numbers for XG & goals scored?

The members area for example has has TAA at 4 goals from 2.2 XG... which is 81%

                        And similarly VVD:

4G from 2.76XG this year (Wrong as he got 5G)
                        4G from 2.55XG last year

                        both around 60%+

      Quite the bump, agreed.
He is the best player in the league though.
But that might not always transfer into the best FPL asset.

I’m in the minority in thinking this for sure, but KDB is not value at 11.5. Particularly as Sterling is now the same price.

Best midfielder in the world right now and can score goals out of nowhere but its FPL and we have sterling at the same price. But penalties and the fact that he is the most nailed player may justify his price tag though.

Almost double everybody else in key passes post lockdown.

Add penalties to his game and I would much rather have him than Salah, Auba etc

One big thing for him is that he’s very capainable in ‘difficult’ fixtures. It’s almost like the more challenging the fixture, the more you back him to score. Such an amazing C option when there’s no standout option in your team

It’s funny to watch people make the same mistakes every season. KDB is pure class and his previous season’s figures were influenced by injury. He was always going to deliver this kind of haul with an injury free season which he did and will do again if he stays injury free.

All these people still insisting Sterling is a better option. There will be weeks where Sterling explodes but KDB is a reliable season keeper.

Last season he was 9.5 after an injury plagued season making him the greatest bargain in the game. I would not pay myself on the backbone that one. I hate city and I hate kdb and even I had him from the off. This is completely different. It is no longer obvious

The prevailing opinion on here last pre season was that Sterling was the vastly superior option despite the price difference.

We now know that was wrong. Obviously KDB is not representing a ridiculously underpriced option this season but he is definitely priced appropriately. He is more bailed than Sterling, more consistent and there is no better option than those two in a City side that will likely be up there as the highest scoring team once again.

I am surprised if the prevailing opinion was 12 mil sterling being better value than 9.5 kdb. Perhaps the opinion was he would outscore kdb but anybody who thought sterling was better value at 2.5 million more is not a serious fpl player.

You get zero credit for being right on kdb scoring more ppm than sterling. That is too obvious.

I agree with you that he is fairly priced but that's the point. He is not an obvious choice anymore just a decent choice who I am definitely considering and may well go for but i am not convinced he will score the same as last season. I anticipate 200 points. Sterling could well outscore him this season and they are the same price. I still prefer kdb because if security if starts but I will probably wait to see city play before transferring either one if them in for auba in gw3

Well I do get some credit in the form of my end season rank being the best I’ve ever had. As I say, it was obvious to me, but I got absolutely destroyed for suggesting that he would get more than 200 points and by regular posters on here that now seem to be championing him this season too.

The bottom line is you’d be mad to have no City attacker and KDB is the best option for the reasons we’ve both stated. Whether he gets the exact same points as last season remains to be seen but there’s no one else in that team who is going to significantly outscore. Sterling may match but would be higher risk.
