Can we trust Spurs’ FPL defenders with appealing fixtures this season?

Fantasy Premier League managers are considering Spurs defenders ahead of the new season… but can they be trusted? That’s what I am here to find out.

When the 2020/21 fixtures were released there was a sudden spike in managers interested in the Spurs backline. These sorts of options have not been particularly popular in recent seasons, but some of them may well have come into the new campaign at just the right prices.

With a similar group of players to Jose Mourinho’s squad, Spurs kept 13 clean sheets in 2018/19, conceding 38 goals, the fifth-best in the league.

Before that, they finished fourth overall for clean sheets and letting in just 36 goals in 2017/18.

And few managers will forget the 2016/17 campaign when Spurs ended up joint-top for clean sheets with Manchester United (17) as they let in only 26 goals across the season.

If they can rediscover this sort of form with their appealing fixtures at the start of 2020/21, we could find some exciting value options in defence.

But the question is… can they deliver on that kind schedule? To find out, I looked at some of the underlying numbers from last season.

His Doherty actually *that* good or is mainly the beneficiary of the system Nuno’s employed.

I’m tempted to think the new Wolves RB will get more points than Doherty will at Spurs.

I think Doherty is a very good fpl asset, but a very average player in real life, his defending is questionable but he has an incredible knack of getting in the box at the right time.

Not sure. Dou had his positional power curtailed a lot when Traore played. Very noticeable after restart.
I suspect any new RB will suffer the same fate

I tend to agree. Attacking fullbacks/wingbacks benefit massively from having a good solid centre back beside them. I'd be interested to see how his points differ from Boly playing.
TAA & Robbo wouldn't be as good if they didn't have VVD back there covering them

I may have already missed a detailed discussion thread on this.... should be one stickied by now.. Anyway!

    1) At what price would you turn down buying Messi in FPL?
    2) Big assumption that it happens, but which Man City players are enhanced or devalued by Messi being in the Man City team?

    1. Weak Become Heros

Couldn't turn him down. Likely price 13m MID?

    2. Salarrivederci

      1) More than 13.5 and I think it will be tricky.

      2) KDB will become an even better option. The other midfielders and forwards will be worse options with Messi in the mix

    3. Pep Roulette
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 2 months ago

Will definitely have him! 13m mid looks likely!

I think Messi coming in the team, will increase the value of other players! But KDB's pens & set pieces will be taken away by Messi.

Getting very far ahead of ourselves here. Might not happen and no reason to suggest that Messi gets pens off of KDB considering his record isn’t amazing and Kevin has done well with them.

      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

      1) 15m would be too much. I'd still probably pay it though as there's no way I'm passing up the chance to have one of the GOATs in my FPL team.

      2) Not sure about enhanced but KDB would be the second pick. The other attackers are more likely to be rotated with Messi there.

As for who would be devalued, Aguero. I can't see Pep running with two aging attackers who aren't particularly dynamic when City don't have the ball.

Realistically, over £12m and you’re ripping up your team to get him in.

If he’s £15m it basically knocks you out of having someone like Trent in defence and another premium mid.

And at this stage of his career, joining a new league where the game is much more physical and played at a higher pace, is he going to score as freely as he has in La Liga?

    Random FPL nostalgia

    Summer 2011

-every single draft contained Baines 8.0m
-even the TOT v EVE game postponed due to the London riots didn't put me off... I benched him
-8m Vidic got injured and was replaced by a 4.5 JEvans
-Kompany was a newly classified defender and a 6m bargain. Only defender nailed on as Micah was a rotation risk (but an awesome asset) and Lescott became nailed in the run in

        4.5 Krul
4.0 Danny Simpson (very underrated RB)

        It’s obscene

He really was a God amongst men

And is still utterly elite by normal professional standards, which are themselves utterly elite for human beings

He’d easily hit 25G in the prem I’d say, with pens and a few set pieces - wouldn’t be beyond him to do 35 if he was really on it

And of course he could get injured and only do 10-15 as well, but if he’s on the pitch - he’ll score & assist - no question

I get the feeling he wouldn’t have gotten those kind of scores in the Prem though.

Completely different league, style of play, level of opponents.

That’s not to say he isn’t one of the all time greats, but, I suspect he’d probably have postEd lower scores than that.

We‘lol never know now, as even if he joins the Premier League he’s not in the prime of his career anymore.

      Awesome achievements though.

Should get good defensive and attacking points if hes as offensive as Aurier was in the latter part of the season. Better crossed, more assured in the box, Kane and Son feeding off his supply. As a Spurs fan I hope it gets over the line, naturally.

Assuming the Doherty to Spurs move goes ahead he would be an instant lock in my team.
In all of Mourinho's teams it has been the right full back that establishes the wide attacking outlet on that side of the pitch. Will be no different at Spurs with Son providing width on the left and Davies tucking in to be a left sided centre back.
Aurier's supply was inconsistent last term but with the attacking potential of Doherty and with Kane to target he could easily reach double digits for assists next year.
6.0 with Spurs' strong fixtures to start the season make him a no brainer

Agreed he's in my team atm and I think he'll stay there if he goes to Spurs. Although I'd like him to make the decision in time either way so he's available for GW1.

Question - are Spurs looking at Doherty only as a replacement for Aurier if he leaves? I.e. there is no scenario where Doherty moves to Spurs and shares minutes with Aurier?

no. Mourinho doesnt trust Aurier. There is a clip from the amazon doc where half time losing in the champions league and he lashes into Aurier for conceding a sloppy penalty. He will be shipped to Italy most probably

He didn’t ever reach double digits in assists at Wolves, I wouldn’t expect him to get more than 5 attacking returns at Spurs.

With all respect to Wolves, Spurs are a better team (historically) with one of the worlds top strikers. Jiminez is good, but not Kane level

They are a better team historically but I disagree that current Spurs team is better than Wolves and that Kane is better than Jimenez.

The fact Spurs had their worst season in like 10 years and only just finished below Wolves who had their best season should tell you all you need to know

Yep - that the current Spurs team isn't as good as this Wolves team. Because they've just had a historically bad year and Wolves finished ahead of them. Would be odd to use that as evidence that Spurs are in a better state than Wolves.

Also worth bearing in mind that Mourinho is the Spurs manager which means that as sure as night follows day there is a team meltdown on the horizon at some point.

Points-wise yes Doherty can outscore Richarlison. In terms of total attacking returns Doherty won’t even come close. He never did.

          Meaningless comparison.

I've got a mental block when it comes to Spurs players under Jose

I miss the days of loading up on Bale, VDV, BAE, Walker, Adebayor and then Toby at 5, Rose, Walker, Alli, Eriksen and Kane

And Aguero been in the game longer even though he is a forward. Aguero is the most explosive asset you can get.

Salah is FPL King hands down.

Salah did 303 in a full 38 games in 2017/18 as a midfielder getting 5 points for a goal & a point for a CS

Suarez started 13/14 with a 5 game ban

He proceeded to score 28 goals & 16 assists... 44 returns... in his next 25(!) games

Just let that settle in for a second (consider Salah’s 300 pointer was 32G 12A for 44 returns plus 15 clean sheet points for the full season)

Suarez then got another 3G 1A in his last 8 games to finish with 48 returns overall in 33 games - I’d personally rate that above Salah’s (phenomenal) 300 point season, given he did it despite 5 less games, and was getting a point less per goal, and no clean sheet points

Then consider Henry blew them both out of the water with a quite frankly ridiculous 49 returns (24G 25A) in 37 appearances in 02/03

Basically like combining Jamie Vardy with Kevin DeBuryne

Wow, excellent take on this! I wasn't playing the game when Henry was still a player, however, I do very clearly remember Suarez's outstanding season for us in 13/14. What a player...

Completely personal. Most people on here are averse to it, understandably

But I process it like this:

      a) they're cheap
      b) some weeks they will inevitably concede and probably via a scappy own goal in the 92nd minute
      c) However, don't see double ups as one offs, but as possibility over blocks. So in the first 10 games (say), they obtain 4 clean sheets then thise 4 GWs will have received an excellent boost to those weekly scores. Sometimes it will work, sometimes it won't. Even the personal who wins overall doesn not smash it every single gameweek
