Az and Mark discuss mistakes from 2019/20 in first FPL BlackBox podcast

The first episode of the relaunched FPL BlackBox podcast was beamed live on YouTube last night, with our very own Az and Mark diving straight into the self-reflection.

The pair pull no punches as they discuss their mistakes from 2019/20, be it transfer strategies that failed to pay off or early-season gambles that were – in hindsight – always doomed to flop.

The thorny issue of team value gets a mention as debate rages over whether early transfers are a good thing, especially with the potential threat of COVID-related postponements disrupting short-term plans.

Taking a longer view, Az and Mark also consider what’s been holding them back in the last few seasons and how they can improve going forward.

There’s a first look at the duo’s Fantasy Premier League drafts for the new season, with the curveball picks of Matheus Pereira (£6.0m) and Eddie Nketiah (£6.0m) raising an eyebrow.

The YouTube and podcast links are below.

About the Podcast

The FPL BlackBox podcast is part of our Scout Network.

Each week, Az and Mark will look back on their decisions to reflect on what’s going right – and what’s going wrong.

The co-hosts will be analysing the mistakes they have made throughout the season, with the hope of learning from their errors to become better Fantasy Premier League managers.

There will also be assessments of other elite managers’ performances along the way, along with the usual chat on transfers and captains.

Head over to the FPL BlackBox YouTube page to subscribe now and, while you’re at it, why not do the same with the Fantasy Football Scout channel.

    Repost for the new article

    New Community Article

I'm always a fan of hearing a different perspective, a different strategy, and this is certainly that. What if you only used your Free Transfers to swap your premiums around? Could it have legs? FPL_Polecat explained his idea.

I take that approach when playing Sky FF. playing a Soucek for example week in week out. At 5.0 he’s a great enabler and should get 100-140 points

I would try to minimize the transfers I use for non premiums, but it has to be spot on nailing the right bandwagons, true in forms and not just flashes. Also, I wouldn't want to pre plan too far ahead, and set the fixtures and captains, but I would like to have at least 2 captaincy options at the same time. Like the strategy but you just have to get the right defenders and 6.0-8.0 strikers and midfielders.

I am one of those planning the Auba > KDB transfer after GWK2. Really though, with 22 goals last year, Arsenal looking better and better and now CS points too - is no one seeing Auba as more of a season keeper?

    1. 3 A
      • 8 Years

Well, William's arrival makes him more interesting. Auba can score more than 25 goals.

Change only if u think at some ge range KDB can score more. If not, just leave Auba there

Auba can't be a season keeper as he tends to go on droughts once in a while and arsenal aren't a top 6 club to me. I suggest to abuse sterling when he faces easy opponents and switch him out with salah/auba when you feel that he's not gonna score that much while KDB can be a season keeper.

Completely agree with all these points KDB and potentially Bruno for the season. Rotating sterling, Auba. 3 pool at the back of not intending to go with Salah

Until Aurier is sold, I don't feel Doherty will be nailed from the start, surely later in the season.
I have Werner because I can change him to Martial
And I have Che because it's his season.

Considering starting with McCarthy then switching to Ryan for GW5.
Is this a waste of a transfer?

Brighton have Chelsea, Man Utd and away to Everton in opening 4 so really don't fancy Ryan from the start.
Southampton have Chelsea, Everton, Wolves, Man Utd in GWs5-9 so really don't fancy McCarthy here.
Doing this transfer gives you 7 of 9 nice fixtures (cpl, TOT, bur, WBA, cpl, WBA, tot, BUR, avl), with only home and away to Spurs the major threat to clean-sheets. These two Spurs fixtures could also potentially be dodged for SHU + SOU if Steer is a £4.0m starter for Villa.

I know the argument against is that save points make up for lack of clean sheets.

It looks nice in theory, but you would probably have more pressing issues in the team by that time. If you decide to wildcard around that time, that swap could work.

If you don't look for a set and forget keeper, get both and rotate them as you want. Never waste a FT on a keeper.

For sure for GW5 you will want another transfers

Firstly really enjoyed the show and some key lessons come out of it from their discussions on what mistakes they made last season which will be really helpful to keep in mind.

Which options would you want to complete squad? Nketiah could be nice differential in those first 2 fixtures and seems ahead of Lacazette who could be on his way out to fund other moves.

    A Nketiah Armstrong/ASM
    B Mitrovic Saka

    McCarthy
    TAA Dier Vinagre
    Salah Aubameyang Alli ****
    Werner Ings ****

People are going over ryan+mccarthy duo but why not try out ramsdale+mccarthy it could work for 38 game weeks with only 13 a slight problem plus sheffield's defence are way better than brighton's

    1. Soto Ayam
      • 5 Years
      4 years, 17 days ago

I was on this for a while but have just dropped McCarthy for a 4.0 gk to generate extra cash. I'll keep Ramsdale as I'm unconvinced by the saints defense, and I'll probably play Ramsdale the majority of the time anyways. Thinking the extra .5 is just sitting on the bench most weeks. However, gw6,7 and 8 I'll be hiding behind the sofa, or maybe ill get another backup keeper by that point. Good luck To ya though,

      1. ivantys
        • 4 Years

Yeah that GW 4,6,7,8 for sheffield hurts me then I went to check southampton's ones they got 3 home games against weak teams so there's gonna be 2-3 clean sheets there no matter how bad their defence are.

        1. Soto Ayam

Week 4 maybe can skip I'm just concerned over the weeks 6-8 but then Sheffield are capable of keeping clean sheets against any team so I won't be surprised if they got any from 6-8

I won't mind if the extra 0.5m can get me 20+ clean sheets a season from the goalkeepers though.

          • 6 Years

The other combo just gives you extra money to use to upgrade elsewhere and frees you from rotation headaches. I've read that the Ryan+McCarthy combo actually fits quite nicely on the fixture list. I'm personally on the 4.5 + 4.0 combo though.
And we don't know if the Sheffield Utd. defence is gonna be as tight as last season with no Henderson in goal.

          1. ivantys
            • 4 Years
            4 years, 17 days ago

Yeah true, I'm just not convinced over Brighton's and Saints' defences as both were rubbish last season. Sheffield is capable of keeping clean sheets against any sides while both these teams are capable of conceding against anyone so I won't really trust the easy fixtures for them. Also ramsdale has 30+ more saves than hendersen so it's probably bounemouth's defence that's the problem not him. But oh well just a suggestion though gl to you.

            1. Soto Ayam
              • 5 Years

Sheff are a team who rely on their well-organised defence, because they don't score a lot of goals. Ramsdale was Bournemouth's player of the season last year (not saying much I know, but still) also he's going back to the club that sold him to Bournemouth. I hope (for me) that it all goes well as I have Egan also.

I went with Jack Robinson as one of the defenders as I feel he's gonna start. If this duo can get me 20+ clean sheets this season then it would be well worth the 0.5m. Glad to have someone agree with me over ramsdale. A lot ppl feel he's trash not as good as hendersen.

Yup I believe so, he started all their pre season games, it's a risk though that I'm willing to take as there's a chance he might be getting more points than basham and egan. I can just switch to another 4.5 if he doesn't start as I figured during weeks 4-6 I might have a couple of transfers I won't really use.

For me, he has a higher chance of starting as compared to vinagre and justin but look at their ownerships lol. Oh well I'm sort of a risk taker for cheaper options like in midfield I took podence since I don't like constant 2-3 pointers for a budget midfielder.

Even if it doesn't work it's kind of fine as you would have seen which burnley full back starts the season or go for other potential 4.5s as their price is basically stable cos low ownership.

If you don't look for a set and forget keeper, get both and rotate them as you want. Never waste a FT on a keeper.

For sure for GW5 you will want another transfers

I have been playing with XG & XGC modelling over the summer using last seasons data and have built a spreadsheet to predict scores based on the above two elements (with an allowance for H/A bias / recent form) and then applying a basic poisson distribution. For GW1 it highlights the following:

Teams most likely to score 2 or more goals:

          Chelsea
          Leicester
          West Ham
          Southampton
          Liverpool

Teams most likely to keep a clean sheet:

          West Ham
          Southampton
          Liverpool
          Leicester
          Spurs
          Wolves

For those that are interested the most likely score based on the data output for each game was:

          Ful/Ars 1:1
          Cpal/Sou 0:2
          Wham/Newc 2:0
          Lpool/Lee 2:0
          WBA/Leic 0:2
          Spur/Eve 1:0
          Brig/Chels 1:2
          Sheff/Wolv 0:1

As a note, via this model, the most likely team to score 2+ goals was Chelsea with a probability of 67.08% and the most likely to keep a clean sheet was Liverpool with a probability of 46.18%

Poisson distribution is a probability model. For example, in the liv/leeds game based on the modelling there are the following probabilities for number of liverpool goals:

              0 - 13.48%
              1 - 27.02%
              2 - 27.07%
              3 - 18.08%
              4 - 9.06%
              5+ 5.29%

So 2 goals for liverpool is the outcome with the highest probability and therefore the score chosen for that game.

Problem with any model is that it is always wrong 😉 and I have been a statistician for 25 years so know what I am talking about. In the score prediction all it has done has pick the favourite and I can tell you know that the probability that the 8 favourites winning in real life is very small

But thanks for sharing as always interesting to see people do different things

Really enjoyed the first BlackBox episode. Az and Mark seem to have good chemistry, questening eachother whenever they can and keeping eachother sharp. Keep it up lads! While i did prefer Marks second team as well (the Nketiah one), i have one objection: isn't it wishful thinking you can get any ManU assest in with 3.5 ITB? Or aren't you expecting price-rises before gw2? I think you already need to make up your mind about which one and act early i'm afraid.
