Scout Reports

How will Donny van de Beek fit into the United midfield and what is his FPL appeal?

One of the biggest deals of the summer transfer window so far saw Donny van de Beek move from Ajax to Manchester United for a reported £35m fee plus add-ons.

The versatile midfielder, 23, signed a five-year contract and could be poised to make his debut in Gameweek 2, when Crystal Palace visit Old Trafford.

Priced up at £7.0m by Fantasy Premier League, the fact he’s cheaper than all of United’s current first-choice attacking players makes him interesting, but what exactly will van de Beek bring to the Red Devils and where does he fit in?

In this new Scout Report, we’ll attempt to answer those questions, and assess his credentials ahead of the new campaign.

History and Statistics

“Dennis [Bergkamp] started talking enthusiastically about a talent in his youth team. It was a boy who reminded Dennis of himself at that age. That was the signal for me to keep an eye on that guy. That was Donny.”
Frank de Boer, Ajax manager 2010-2016

Dutch midfielder van de Beek may only be 23 years old but he arrives at Old Trafford with a wealth of experience playing at the top level.

A product of the famed Ajax academy, van de Beek made his debut back in 2015 during a Europa League match against Celtic, before establishing himself the following season, when he made 29 first-team appearances in all competitions.

A senior international debut followed in 2017, while a further 35 matches aided his development.

However, it was the 2018/19 campaign when van de Beek truly announced himself on the European stage, as a young and exciting Ajax side reached the Champions League semi-finals beating Real Madrid and Juventus on the way.

The Dutchman was a key member of the team, along with the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong, and despite falling short, caught the imagination of football fans around the world.

“Van de Beek. Nobody talks much about him, but he has a dynamic in the game, he gets behind Tadic, he arrives, he works, he scores goals. Logically, I love De Jong and De Ligt. But the example of the operation of this Ajax is Van de Beek.” – Mauricio Pochettino, speaking ahead of Tottenham’s Champions League semi-final second-leg against Ajax in 2019

More success followed domestically, as Ajax won the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup, while van de Beek’s performances were rewarded with a place on the 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or, and a spot in the Netherlands squad that reached the 2019 Nations League final.

May be a cover for Pogba and bruno initially but would be a solid addition to the team. A shift to diamond is mooted, but not sure united have the right wing backs and strikers for that

      This.
I feel like this signing is one to bring United up to scratch in terms of strength in depth.
A fantastic option to have when bruno or pogba need a rest, hit a poor patch or are injured.
Definitely not buying into the diamond talk. Definitely don't have the wing backs or forwards for it as you've said.

Lol 35 million just for a cover, that is for a club that have won many trophies in recent years.

        Wow, very insightful.

That is for a team that has bruno and pogba already and a big drop in talent when you go past that in midfield. It's a very important transfer. More important than most - including you - realise.

Sorry realised I put kane in haha meant to be Werner. That’s half the problem. Is it worth loading the mid and one premium striker or one less premium mid for a mid striker like ings or Jimenez?

4th? You can't have seen much of him if you believe he's behind Ziyech and Pulisic in the pecking order.
Depending on how he's used, he may even be more important than Werner.

I think it depends whether Newcastle sign striker. If so then ASM otherwise Egan good option with some good opening fixtures- For what it’s worth I am going Saka as 5.5 mid and will keeping eye on Podence for week 3 if looks like starter for Wolves

Not a bad shout that tbh. However, I think the first 2-3 weeks will all be about bringing in the Mancs. Hence, I'd like this particular position (Egan or ASM) to be a set and forget at least until the first 4-5 GWs. Seriously leaning towards Egan now that I've seen his fixtures.

I think so, though Werner could start wide and I think he’s going to need a 25 goals season to be worth it. All very grey atm

Havertz/Pulisic with 10-15 goals and plenty of assists could well supersede Werner in a straight shootout.

Perhaps room for both, which is possible if you’re not drenched in mid price madness 😉

Very possible, but Pulisic out and Havertz only just joining means i have a few weeks to wait and see. Or maybe by GW2 both the prices have gone up - which is most llikely

Much to ponder. I think we’re all agreed it will be important to give ourselves the flexibility in being able to obtain them

If I go without Werner, I’ll go Brewster/Davis and target a similarly priced mid

Problem with Werner is that CFC has Abraham (must play some minutes) and Girou (1st striker of french national tram, with great end of the season). And with 45% ownership i hope that they will share aome minutes (Werner is ofc #1) 🙂

And I personally wouldn’t go with a non playing keeper, I think we’ll get a few players/team missing a game or two because of covid - smartest thing is to get 15 playing players

Honestly really dislike soyuncu at 5.5. His personal performances deteriorated last season and a couple of key defenders missing at the start of the season. Much prefer Tierney at that price point or dropping down to davies at 5.
I have question marks over salah as well. Considering even benching De Bruyne/Fernandes.
Soucek has been mentioned (there are obvs a few 5.5 options).
      Rest looks good.

Thanks for that, Davies can free up 0.5 for me so that makes a big difference.

You will probably have to transfer out Justin after like 3/4 games which I don't like considering Vinagre will have to go at some point as well.
      Rest is fine.

Could be gold if he’s nailed down starter AND now a mid. If he was still a striker would probably be 6.5 so I think the price is fair, just the minutes with any new signings

It's Ayew over mitro for me. You would go for barnes over zaha? Given that barnes is winger while zaha is played as striker now.

Have Zaha in at the mo as I like that price point in midfield - once you add 1.5!!!

Sceptical. Zaha has been playing much more advanced and Palace have been set up more attacking but this is preseason!

Barnes is a temptation. But think I’m prepared to go Zaha for 2/3 while I wait on mids to appear. Pondering

Yeah Zaha for pulisic is in my mind, and I'm going for the zaha+ayew duo so that any goal palace scores I would benefit greatly from it, plus his price will be stable as well. Barnes was in my team until I saw how west brom played earlier, they defended way too deep and I'm not convinced leicester would score against them, let alone barnes getting any goal involvement.

Considering playing a 4.5 midfielder in week 1 and having a couple of players on the bench ready to go for week 2. Don’t want to go early on wildcard so trying to think beyond week 1. Thoughts?

      McCarthy
      TAA Dier Egan Vinagre
      Aubameyang Salah ASM Reed
      Werner Ings

      Subs: Nyland, Brewster, Shaw, Greenwood

Pretty close to the first team I set up.

Think Bruno is the priority at United - followed by Martial. Had Awb in my variant. Shaw if fit would be better. Thing is midterm United fixtures are fairly grim. Planning for a triple up from the off is bold and could tip you into WC

Thanks, think all your points are good. I’d rather have Fernandes too but I think Man Utd have good options at cheaper that provide adequate coverage. I reckon Martial will have a big season. If I go with Fernandes it takes a slot that I’d like to have available for Salah, KDB, Aubameyang, Sterling. I don’t think you can cover them easily with cheaper options at their clubs.

I think mid term Greenwood will probably drop out of my team. I expect him to be more susceptible to rotation (regardless of Sancho deal) and should be an easy move to someone like Pulisic.

            • 5 Years

If you might bin him for Puli then it’s a bit perverse to bench him week 1 no?

That’s at least partly why I moved off him.

I’m not set on that, I’m just looking at it as a potential option around weeks 6-8 when Utd’s fixtures get tougher. If Pulisic was fit from week 1 I probably wouldn’t have Greenwood.

I’m seeing fairly tough United fixtures from 4 on. Just away to Newcastle lightens the load and Newcastle will try and build a wall
