Salah tests positive for coronavirus – Egyptian FA

Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) has tested positive for coronavirus while on international duty with Egypt.

The Egyptian Football Association announced on Friday that the Liverpool midfielder returned a positive test ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Togo but is asymptomatic.

The (translated) statement read:

The medical swab conducted on the mission of our first national football team showed that our international player, Mohamed Salah, the star of Liverpool, was infected with the coronavirus after his test came out positive – although he does not suffer from any symptoms.

[He] was subject to the medical protocol after the coordination of the national team doctor, Dr Muhammad Abu Al-Ola, with his English club, Liverpool, in addition to isolating him in his room and also isolating all contacts.

In a later announcement, Egypt confirmed that a second test backed up the findings of the first:

At the time of writing, Liverpool have yet to confirm the news.

Barring any further developments, Salah will now have to undergo a period of self-isolation and will very likely be unavailable for the Gameweek 9 visit of Leicester City.

The Reds are already injury-ravaged heading into that fixture, with Joe Gomez (£5.4m) joining Virgil van Dijk (£6.3m) on the sidelines and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) also a major doubt with a calf problem.

Sadio Mane (£12.0m) of course tested positive for coronavirus last month, returning to training at Melwood after a 10-day period of self-isolation and featuring for the Reds in the Merseyside derby, 15 days after his initial diagnosis.

Salah could feasibly return in Gameweek 10, then, if a similar timeframe of recovery, isolation and return to training pans out – although there is also the small matter of a flight back to England in between.

We have already seen West Bromwich Albion’s Callum Robinson (£5.5m) withdraw from the Republic of Ireland squad after returning a positive test of his own.

Wolves’ Conor Coady (£5.0m) is also self-isolating after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

Earlier on Friday, Ireland revealed that Alan Browne had returned a positive coronavirus test after playing against England – although the Football Association of Ireland added that “no close contacts of the player” had been identified.

Salah attended his brothers wedding three days ago. Why isn’t he getting shamed for this? There was no social distancing judging from the pictures...

Yeah but did you see the pictures? I had my mothers funeral a few weeks back and everything was super strict for tables to be spread out and no hand shakes etc.. this wedding was a straight out party with close dancing etc. Not cool imo.

There is nothing wrong with him attending his brother’s wedding. You could possibly shame the Egyptian government if you aren’t happy with the number of cases weddings lead to but unless the wedding was illegal, no reason to shame Mo Salah.

Lol. He lives in the UK. He knows what the rules are in the UK. He knows the wedding he attended wasnt following the rules in the UK, and that he will be returning to the UK in short time. He knew there was a high risk of getting the virus by attending the wedding. Hes not living up to the responsibility footballers should show for being allowed to keep living relatively normally while other people are having their lives put on hold or worse.

Absolutely ridiculous that there are people defending him. Hes proven himself to be a moron.

Family comes before football and work. He doesn't have to follow the UK rules just because he is living in the UK.

I can agree with that. My point was about him being shamed about attending his brother's wedding. If it's not because he attended but how he acted during the wedding, fair enough.

Well I presume he knew it was going to be a little difficult to avoid contact with people. He's not completely blind to his own family, culture and all the other relevant information.

I'm not convinced that the special protections that sports people are getting during the pandemic are intended for this use. If I were able to move freely between countries, I would be visiting my family for Christmas, which is something I only do once per year. If I was given special privilages to travel freely for the purpose of my job, I would be very sensitive about what I use that privilage for. Salah, on the other hand, seems to be taking advantage of that privilage. I can see why people are upset about it.

The point underlying this and every other single incident/occasion/event/gathering/whatever it may be, is that everyone should be distancing as much as possible and masking-up NOT because any given government mandates it and you
have no other option, but because it's the socially responsible thing to do.

As an adult, you shouldn't have to be told to do the right thing. Having a moral compass means conducting yourself with compassion, principles, and integrity, and being fully accountable for your actions, even if nobody is watching.

Yep Salah as good as gone, likely for Bruno with my FT. Mitchell seems a non-issue right now as permasub, but am tempted by Saiss to Chilwell for a hit - however then means benching one of Coufal/Lamptey/Podence this week....

I've got Salah for 12.0 so if I sell him now it means:

    1) -0.3 tv - He'll probably drop only once so if I want him back I'll loose 0.3
    2) -4 points - It would be for a hit now since I have no FT left
    3) -1 FT - I'll need another FT in gw 10 or 11 to bring him back

I think I'll just hold him. Are you, fellow Salah owners, planning to hold or sell?

Not sure its really a 0.3 loss. If you sell him now you would get 12.2 for him, not 12.0. He if drops once before you buy him back you would only lose 0.1 (12.3 - 12.2 = 0.1). You are right about the -4 and the lost FT.

      Your first point isn't correct.

You'd be selling him for 12.2m. So if he drops 0.1m, you'd buy him back at 12.3m. You'd only be losing 0.1m technically.
Hit is indeed not great and the FT I consider worth 4 points so 8 points total.

Free transfer, need Bruno, bought at 12 and look at it as selling for a profit.

On WC, trying to be a little different and capitalise on the City fixtures. Is a defence of 5.5 4.5 4.5 4.5 4.0 all right if it enables an attack of:

    Salah* KDB Bruno Grealish (4.5)
    Jesus DCL Adams?

(*or Mane if Salah out more than 1 GW)

It's different! Would you be able to get Salah back? Could lead to a sideways Mané to Salah move in the future. Also, the defender rotation will be key but could absolutely work.

Cheers mate! Appreciate the response. This currently leaves 0.1 ITB (with Salah; 0.3 with Mane) so I could get Salah back in one move if I sell him for 12.2 and he drops to 12.3.

My bench is rubbish this week:

    Dallas vs Arsenal
    Bissouma vs Villa
    KWP vs Wolves

With Salah likely out i have to play one of them, or take a hit to replace one of them. They are all at 4.5m and I have 0.9itb.

This is the ideal player i wanted, but yeah as you said, never know. Might be benched and a waste of transfer.

    Have Son Sterling already.

Salah to Bruno for free? Even if it's just for the West Brom game possibly.

Will lose a bit of value but he should drop a little also.

Depends when you want Salah back. If it’s the following week, bench him, not worth two transfers.

      I'd just bench Salah personally.

If it's for one GW I'd advise against. Worth noting if you keep him that you'll lose value but when others are taking hits to get him in you'll have those 4 points banked.

    A) Targett
    B) Coufal

Which is better for this week? Cheers 🙂

A lot of people moving onto Ziyech...

I have Werner who seems to be picking up his form too.

    Keep or move to Ziyech?

Werner will likely get more points than Ziyech however Ziyech is the value pick. Depends on where your additional funds would go.

(Ziyech + Cancelo) vs Werner? But wouldn't be so straightforward, need hits.

Consider Chelsea subsequent fixtures. Which will require a moment of creative magic to unlock a resolute defence and which will be open-ended and thus, favouring Werner?

Ifs and buts about salah being out for more than one gameweek - my understanding is he would only miss the Leicester game. Is this right?

If two matches I am definitely selling. Bought him at 12.2.

Sell, imo. However I'm biased as I am certainly removing him on WC. I think if you can plan it well and have an option that will outscore Salah over the next few GWs then no fear should be felt.

Final pieces of the WC jigsaw atm... opinions would be appreciated and reasons as to why. Aware that benching headaches are involved 🙂

    McC / Forster
    Chilly / Dias / Justin / Targett / Coufal
    KdB / Fernandes / Grealish / X / Y
    DCL / Watkins / Z

Looking to fill X, Y and Z with one of the following options before moving to Salah, Bamford and Soucek in GW12. Have a little wiggle room with money itb.

    (i) Two of Ziyech, Zaha or Hamez + Richarlison
(ii) One of Ziyech, Zaha or Hamez + Jota + Jesus

I think your defense is nearly perfection.
If you don't have Jota in your team, then who are you dropping to start Watkins? I'd prefer to put more rotation in there.
I also think Jesus is a decent step up over Richarlison, while he's fine if you don't have Everton (which you do, of course). Jesus leaves you funds to reach Werner, and others nearby, easier.

    Trying to look at some positives from the Mo injury;
    - Can sell Salah (defo 0pts) instead of Son this week for Bruno(c)
    - Without value tied up in Salah we can be more flexible moving around premium mids to target best captaincy option
    - Will be easy to get KDB(c) next week for Son

    That’s about it...

    Salah & Foden to Bruno(C) & Ziyech for -4?

    Gives me the following team

    McCarthy (Button)
    Robbo Lamptey Dallas (Mitchell Ferguson)
    KDB Bruno(C) Son Ziyech Podence
    Kane DCL (Davis)
