The best Man City players for appealing fixtures after 5-0 win over Burnley

Man City 5-0 Burnley

  • Goals: Riyad Mahrez x3 (£8.2m), Benjamin Mendy (£5.9m), Ferran Torres (£6.9m)
  • Assists: Kevin De Bruyne x2 (£11.6m), Kyle Walker (£6.2m), Gabriel Jesus (£9.3m), Phil Foden (£6.5m)
  • Bonus points: Mahrez x3, B Mendy x2, De Bruyne x1, Walker x1

KDBACK

Kevin De Bruyne (£11.6m) and his Manchester City colleagues sent an emphatic statement to Fantasy Premier League managers in their 5-0 win over Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

This was the first fixture of an appealing run for Pep Guardiola’s men which continues with Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle all set to visit the Etihad Stadium between now and Gameweek 15.

And it appears that Manchester City have hit top gear just in time as their win over Burnley was the first time since Gameweek 2 that they scored more than twice in a match, while De Bruyne registered his first double-digit haul since that trip to Wolves.

He provided two assists in the rout but could have come away with more, nearly lobbing Bailey Peacock-Farrell (£4.0m) before striking the post in stoppage time.

Following a much-needed midweek rest, the Belgian is the clear favourite to snap up for reliable starts from Gameweek 11 onwards, especially considering he is already the most popular Manchester City asset (19%).

However, it is still worth noting how much of a differential De Bruyne actually is compared to other similarly-priced midfielders, a strange concept indeed.

At the time of writing, Diogo Jota (22.8%), James Rodríguez (28.3%), Mohamed Salah (29.6%), Bruno Fernandes (37.6%), Jack Grealish (41.8%) and Son Heung-min (57.6%) all sit in more teams than De Bruyne, none of which can offer the same level of appealing fixtures in the next four or five Gameweeks.

Considering Manchester City host Fulham next time out, De Bruyne is sure to be a popular captain option for Gameweek 11 and that alone could be enough to force the hands of those without his services.

TEXTBOOK ROULETTE

De Bruyne’s credentials for the coming weeks are arguably boosted when we consider who the alternatives are for Fantasy investment.

For the fourth time in seven meetings with Burnley, Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) was named on the bench and, even though he stayed there throughout Saturday’s match and is theoretically more likely to start against Fulham, Gameweek 10 will not have helped Fantasy managers trust the Englishman.

Meanwhile, a hat-trick for Riyad Mahrez (£8.2m) is sure to take the national headlines but even FPL newcomers will know the Algerian is a poisoned chalice of Fantasy points.

The former Leicester man was brilliant against Burnley, thoroughly deserving of a 21-point haul but it was the first time he had not blanked since Gameweek 3. Furthermore, Mahrez has completed 90 minutes just once in the last four Gameweeks.

Still, Guardiola used his performance to send a warning to his other attacking players.

“Of course it can help us, especially for Riyad. For the other ones, Gabriel has to score goals, the others have to score goals, Sterling when he plays has to score goals. They haven’t scored much and have to score goals. That is the reason why they are here and play up front.” – Pep Guardiola

Looking for a cheaper alternative is also a risky manoeuvre right now, when we consider that Phil Foden (£6.5m) has started one Premier League match since Gameweek 5.

While benchings sometimes indicate a start in the next match is incoming, a string of five in a row is certainly enough to mistrust the England international as a reliable option for Fulham’s trip to the Etihad Stadium next time out.

By comparison, Ferran Torres (£6.9m) has now started the last four in a row, finally delivering on his promise and getting a first Premier League goal.

Still, if Sterling is to come in for Gameweek 11, it would mean dropping one of either the Spaniard or Mahrez. Guardiola will not be swayed by the Algerian’s hat-trick, you would imagine but predicting who that might be might be too much for anyone considering Torres, even if his minutes were managed in Gameweek 10, replaced by Foden in the 67th minute.

Gabriel Jesus (£9.3m), who has two attacking returns in his last three, completing 90 minutes consistently since Gameweek 8, might benefit from Sergio Aguero‘s (£10.3m) injury situation for maybe one more week.

The Argentinian missed the meeting with Burnley and does not sound ready to make an immediate return although Guardiola insists he is not injured.

“It’s not dangerous. Not injury. The reaction sometimes the knee, swollen. Hopefully tomorrow he can come back to training.” – Pep Guardiola

JOÃO CANCELLED?

Among those rotated out of the starting line-up was João Cancelo (£5.6m), who proved popular with Wildcarders inside the top 10,000 FPL managers for Gameweek 10.

With Benjamin Mendy (£5.9m) featuring in midweek, it had been thought that Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.5m) might come in for Cancelo, if he were to be benched, but the Frenchman was chosen for a second consecutive start in all competitions.

Interestingly, Cancelo stayed on the bench for the duration as Mendy was handed a rare 90-minute outing, in which he scored his first goal of the season.

Owners of the Portuguese full-back will likely wait in worry for Manchester City’s next Champions League line-up and Guardiola’s next press conference.

Selling one of their defenders ahead of a match-up with Fulham will take nerves of steel but it seems unlikely that we will be handed concrete clues about left-back selection, as is usually the case with Guardiola, who has already put out one ominous quote regarding Mendy.

“(Asked about Mendy’s goal) It is important for our people to score goals. If they score goals, they have more chance to keep playing.” – Pep Guardiola

Perhaps the real winner among Manchester City defenders in Gameweek 10 was Rúben Dias (£5.6m) who has now started each of the last seven Premier League matches and even had his minutes managed against Burnley, coming off after 69 minutes to bank a clean sheet before his colleagues did.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Mendy, Stones, Dias (Garcia 70′), Walker; Gundogan, Rodrigo (Fernandinho 46′), De Bruyne; Torres (Foden 67′), Jesus, Mahrez.

Burnley XI (4-3-3): Peacock-Farrell; C Taylor, Mee, Tarkowski, Lowton; McNeil, Benson, Westwood; Rodriguez, Wood, A Barnes.

Why is Sterling less ‘trusted’ than De Bruyne, both rested in last couple of matches?

Fair point, however ahead of the Burnley game De Bruyne didn’t look anything special (De Bruyne owner)

I would say Sterling is more certain to start against Fulham than De Bruyne

You are missing the point mate. KDB has no competition, he's uncontested first choice for his position.
Sterling has Torres and Foden to worry about and both of them are playing better than him right now.

KDB and Sterling basically the same price.

      Sterling last 5 fixtures: 2 - 3 - 1 - 1 - 0 = 7
      KDB last 5 fixtures: 1 - 6 - 3 - 2 - 10 = 22

KDB on set pieces and pens. KDB the better option.

Don’t disagree that De Bruyne has more points potential, my point is that I don’t think he is any less of a risk to rotation.

As said above after Sterling’s rest would be more confident of him starting vs Fulham

Just conjecture, but it’s clear to anyone who follows football that KDB is the most important player at City.

Also maybe the ominous ‘they have to score goals’ bit from Pep implies that players up front who aren’t scoring are in trouble.

Surely you can see the question is more nuanced? You’ve drawn your own conclusion about why, you haven’t quoted Pep etc.

What's nuanced about it. The reason he trusts KdB is he's a better player and produces that more consistently. Sterling is not a world class footballer, just an unreliable tool in a system

      2. Top Dog
        • 14 Years

De Bruyne also much more injury prone, and would say Pep is more likely to protect against Fulham & West Brom.

To be clear I’m a huge KDB fan (& owner) but don’t see him being any less of a rotation risk in easier games than Sterling. In fact, probably more now that Sterling has had a rest.

I don't think that is true. He is key to how City play so is rarely even rested in the easier games. If anything he will get his rest in cups and be taken off early if games look to be won would be my guess

Pep's quotes hinted he'd been dropped for not scoring goals. That's what I took anyway.

"...the others have to score goals, Sterling when he plays has to score goals. They haven’t scored much and have to score goals. That is the reason why they are here and play up front.”

Hopefully the midweek game helps in some way. More information can't hurt.

Ive never rated Sterling. Hes not "excellent". The one thing hes very good at is positioning in the box. But when City are struggling to create and break down the opposition he is a passenger.

To compare sterling to kdb is like comparing apples to oranges they have totally different skill sets. He's not meant to be the type of player to unlock deep lying defences that's not his job it doesn't mean that he's not generally excellent at his role. He's consistently put up great attacking return numbers for the last 3 seasons.

No, it's like comparing one player who is relatively easily replaceable with one who is not. It's not about comparing skillets, it's about how difficult they would be to replace with someone who can do a similar job. With sterling this is not too difficult, beciase he is mediocre, with KdB this is very difficult, because he's exceptional

    1) KDB

Look at City's superstar replacements down the spine of the team:

Ederson = Ederson - Same player and still good
Kompany = Dias - TBC if Dias adds the same qualities as Kompany
D.Silva = Bernardo - Not at the same level as Silva in his prime
Fernandinho = Rodri - Not at the same level as Fernandinho in his prime
Ageuro = Jesus - Not at the same level as Aguero in his prime

Add to that, Walker's declined as age slows him down, Mendy and Laporte injury problems, then you can see why even with KDB being better than he was, City aren't as good as they were 2/3 years ago.

    3. Carefree Crew
      • 6 Years
      3 years, 11 months ago

I agree with all 4 player comparisons & Dias TBC.

But Walker is still rapid & has been playing well IMHO.

If you're comparing to 2/3 years ago & referring to Walker's age, then KDB coming into his prime, Sterling approaching his prime, other younger players on the up curve of their careers have to be factored in.

They've clearly not been as prolific in front of goal this season when averaging 100 goals a season for the last 3 years & the stats back up what you're saying, but I feel that people are writing them off, when effectively they've only lost D. Silva compared to last year.

I think with Aguero back they are more likely to return to the City we're used to watching & people will be rushing to get their assets back in.
Maybe I'm wrong & Burnley was a freak result & they'll return to only scoring a goal a game but I think the forget is more likely.

    KDB in for

    A. Salah
    B. Fernandes
    C. Ziyech and Grealish (KDB and fodder)

    Or play Pep roulette with

    D. Ziyech > Mahrez

Ryan's performances have taken a sizable dip this season, according to his xGP.

Brighton's defensive stats are pretty strong, they don't give away many quality opportunities to their opponents. So if Ryan does improve, Brighton may be a good source of CSs.

Imagine Lamptey with a strong defence behind him... let's hope the Aussie stopper finds his gloves!

Time for Brighton to get Henderson on loan then. More likely to go to Brighton as Man Utd won't consider them a threat.

I've had Ryan all season. The big difference this year is that Brighton defense is good enough to prevent alot of shots - Ryan has only had 12 saves in 10 games (the lowest out of all the GK's who have played all games), so no save points like last year. Unfortunately, only 2 CS, and 4 matches where they conceded 1 goal.

He's been class for ages now. I still think about how close he was to signing for Arsenal. Would he turn out to be the same player, better or worse? Who knows.

But I'm actually glad he stayed and just confirmed Leicester City legend status.

City have are playing Fulham at home, and they're trying to squeeze in their players alongside Salah. City mids are better than Bruno next week.

If they had planned properly however, they'd be able to have all of the big 3 in their side: Salah, KDB, Bruno 😉

          I'd rather Bruno over Kane.

The budget strikers are better than the budget midfielders too (except Jota). Bamford, DCL, Antonio, Watkins look better value than Walcott, Podence, Bowen etc...

I agree on paper KDB is better than Bruno next week but Bruno is outscoring him by 25 points this season, both playing ~650 minutes. That's not close, at all.

          • 13 Years

Yeah, I would struggle to lose Bruno, I think he's an outstanding player, in FPL and real life. Anyone wanting a City mid should find another way imo, even taking a hit to redistribute funds.

I think Salah KDB Bruno will be the top scorers in FPL.

              Wouldn't be surprised.

I think his classification hurts him though. And in some games, like the City one, he'll be playing quite deep to start counters. This should mean he'll get more assists this season and fewer goals imo. And by fewer goals, I mean around 21 instead of the 29 he's scored previous years 😆

              Good player.

Since joining United Bruno played 22 PL games and scored 181 fantasy points. That's over 8 points per game. I know a lot can happen but a 22 game sample is something you can work with. 8x38=304 or a more realistic 8x33=264.

He is a season keeper for me.
My team is built around my midfield:
