The best budget FPL goalkeepers for 2021/22

Our position-by-position analysis of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) options for 2021/22 continues, as we assess the leading candidates in the budget (sub-£5.0m) FPL goalkeeper category.

In a season where there are six premium midfielders priced £10.0m or above, as well as three forwards, the £4.5m FPL goalkeepers could be more important than ever.

And while the majority of this season’s budget options are back-ups at their respective clubs, there is a small group that can offer real value, which we’ll explore in this article.

We’ve got every position covered, so take your pick!

Comprehensive Opta data on the players featured in these articles is available in our Premium Members Area. Let’s take a quick look at the list of best budget FPL goalkeepers!

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

ROBERT SANCHEZ

Gameweeks 1 – 8

Robert Sánchez (£4.5m) could provide excellent value and stands out amongst the best budget goalkeeper options.

The Spaniard secured the no. 1 jersey early last season and went on to claim 10 clean sheets and eight bonus points in his 27 outings. In fact, from Gameweek 13 onwards, only Ederson (£6.0m) and Edouard Mendy (£6.0m) accumulated more clean sheets.

It’s also worth noting that Brighton and Hove Albion play only two of last season’s top nine teams in the first eight Gameweeks.

Providing Mathew Ryan (£4.5m) leaves the club this summer, Sánchez can be paired with Albion’s reserve stopper Jason Steele (£4.0m), which guarantees you a starting goalkeeper for just £8.5m.

MARTIN DUBRAVKA

Gameweek 1 – 8

Since joining Newcastle United in January 2018 from Sparta Prague, Martin Dubravka (£4.5m) has been one of the Magpies’ most consistent performers.

He earned 11 save points in his 13 appearances last term, in addition to three clean sheets and six bonus points.

And while Newcastle United’s defensive numbers remain a concern, the Slovak international’s 3.29 saves per 90 minutes, which ranked seventh amongst keepers who featured for over 100 minutes last term, is promising.

It is a mixed start to 2021/22 for Steve Bruce’s side, but there is at least some clean sheet potential against Southampton and newly promoted Watford in the early weeks.

VICENTE GUAITA

Gameweek 1 – 8

For a team that is supposed to be defensively strong, Crystal Palace’s 2020/21 season was a disappointing one.

The Eagles conceded a massive 66 goals, their worst total since returning to the Premier League in 2013.

Despite this, Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) is a reliable keeper and could offer value, providing new manager Patrick Vieira can tighten them up.

However, his opening fixtures dampen his appeal, so at least initially, it’s probably best to look elsewhere.

ALEX MCCARTHY & FRASER FORSTER

Gameweek 1 – 8

Southampton’s goalkeepers didn’t exactly cover themselves in glory last season.

Both Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) and Fraser Forster (£4.5m) came in for criticism at different times, which meant plenty of rotation and plenty of headaches for FPL managers.

It is still unclear who is Saints’ no. 1, with manager Ralph Hasenhüttl predicting a “battle” for the jersey in pre-season:

“I think both still have one year left on their contracts and I expect both to stay, going into next season with a battle in pre-season for who is then allowed to start. If you are allowed to start it doesn’t mean you also end up in the season as a number one. I want to have this battle. I want to have two goalkeepers that are competing for this position. That should normally lead to a better performance from everybody.”

However, with a challenging fixture list which sees them take on both Manchester clubs and Chelsea in the opening weeks, it gives us plenty of time to assess the situation.

DANIEL BACHMANN

Gameweek 1 – 8

Watford returns to the Premier League on the back of a series of strong defensive displays.

They conceded the fewest goals (30) in the Championship last term, which included 23 clean sheets.

Having started 2020/21 as back-up to Ben Foster (£4.0m), Daniel Bachmann (£4.5m) was installed as the no. 1 after Xisco Muñoz arrived as head coach midway through the campaign.

Like Brighton, Watford have some of the better fixtures from a defensive perspective at the start of the season, which could make Bachmann a popular Gameweek 1 pick.

DAVID RAYA

Gameweek 1 – 8

Brentford arrive in the Premier League with the worst defensive record of all three promoted teams, having conceded 42 goals last season.

However, they didn’t concede a lot of quality chances. In fact, they had the lowest expected goals conceded (xGC) total in the entire division.

Brentford no. 1 David Raya (£4.5m) could therefore offer value, though the Bees’ ability to control matches will be severely tested in the top-tier.

Their first Premier League season will start with a London derby against Arsenal, before away games at Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.

TIM KRUL

Gameweek 1 – 8

Norwich City return to the top-flight with Tim Krul (£4.5m) as their current no. 1, having conceded only 36 goals in 46 Championship matches last season.

However, Angus Gunn (£4.0m) has recently returned to the Canaries, starting a third spell with his boyhood club in a permanent transfer from Southampton. That’s something to monitor in pre-season, though he is expected to at least start 2021/22 as a reserve.

The loss of Oliver Skipp (£4.5m) is a blow, and you do fear for Norwich with games against Liverpool, Manchester City, Leicester City and Arsenal to start.

Given their fixtures, it makes sense to avoid in the early weeks and reassess further down the line.

Elsewhere, the remaining sub-£5.0m FPL goalkeeper options detailed below are currently back-ups rather than potential starters, and will probably be relying on unfortunate injuries to feature more.

ArsenalRúnar Alex Rúnarsson (£4.0m)
Aston VillaJed Steer (£4.0m)
BrentfordEllery Balcombe (£4.0m), Patrick Gunnarsson (£4.0m)

    FPL Draft.
    How does this look please?

    Pickford / Virginia
    James / Dias / Shaw / Cresswell / Coady
    Salah / Fernandes / Saka / Raphinha / Bissouma
    DCL / Watkins / Toney

    Thanks

I just don’t see the logic of going with no Liverpool defence, also who will you bench gW1? Raph I assume ?

I would downgrade 1 of the defenders to a 4,0 or 4.5 and get taa or robbo

Liverpool DEF too expensive, but i did originally have TAA
GW1 Subs... either Dias or Toney with Coady & Bissouma

Only an early draft so likely to change.

    Interesting Fact

Every England fan who put their heads down when Kane missed the penalty, missed the actual goal. 😀

Not sure they would have put their heads down because of the way the ball came back out from the save. It looked odds on that it was going right back to Kane and that he was almost certain to score the rebound.

Had Schmeichel parried it to his left Kane wouldn’t have been able to have scored the rebound, and heads would have dropped.

With so many cheap keepers with good fixtures is it daft to go with Martinez?

It depends on whether you can afford him or not.

For me it would be Smith Rowe over Buendia or White over Digne, thats why not going for him.

I prefer to go with both GK from EVE, LEI or ARS for 9.0 (5.0 + 4.0)
      Martinez + 4.0 is 0.5 more expensive

I like Leno and Runnarson at £9m, but I can get Tierney for the same price as Leno.

I have to be honest, I am finding it hard to go without Martinez and Steer. Personally, I think he’s worth paying the extra for and my fear is that after about 10 GWs people with £4.5m keepers will be wishing they had Martinez, who won’t be as cheap as £5.5m by then.

I could be wrong though, and I’m sure Maximus will be able to provide more background information on which keeper option is best.

I don’t think so, as I still think he’s going to be the top scoring keeper by the end of the season.

But the lure of saving £1m on a keeper by getting Sanchez is enticing and many feel they can replace the points they’re not going to get from Martinez by spending it on a premium defender instead.

Early thoughts for the final round?
I am 5 points behind my ml leader and I need to do something different.

    My team:
    Pickford*
    Shaw Maguire Stones
    Sterling Insigne Chiesa Mount* Saka*
    Kane Immobile

    * = players who I think will be different from his
And maybe he will captain Kane so I will go with Sterling.

I have Jota in my current draft. As for Nacho, I think there are other good choices at that price point. Antonio, Watkins, Wilson and Wood come to mind

      1. Kristobal

Yes, there are other options in that price bracket but Nacho feels more of a goal threat than the others mentioned. A higher ceiling. Only concern is Daka.

I fear that Jota will have to share his minutes with Firmino too much. Therefore I am bit uncertain whether he is better option than Robertson. Different position yes, but quite similar price.

I understand what you mean but Jota can play on all three attacking positions (read Mané and Bobbys). Add to that is that is feels like a goal threat even when he is a supersub. But I can be wrong.

Just remembered to look at article 🙂

Guaita has been brilliant for Palace for a while - an amazing free signing - and was fan and player player of the season. Rather suspect Butland may well take over this season. Definitely not a defence to be on early but could be one to keep an eye for WC

Was more looking at who was likely to start at Palace.

And you can ditto that comment about relegation for the last few seasons. They were racing certainties on here this time last year for sure. The Vieira effect could of course turn out to be anything - the core of the squad is still solid so keeping a reasonably open mind right now.

Simply looking at the teams with starting 4.5 keepers I'd have only Sanchez off the bat.

Dubravka and Newcastle look possible but I'm not sure they are much further ahead of the promoted sides and Palace.

I think they're marginally better. Obviously the popular £4.5m choice is Brighton.

Just not sure if I trust any £4.5 keeper enough to set and forget.

            Likewise really.

Schmeichel was my initial choice but will probably end up with Sanchez and live with benched Lamptey on the double up - WC won't be far away I imagine.

Hey, tinkering with my 1st ever FPL team & have a question for you all. I'm wondering why so many teams include deadwood / 2pt fodder on the bench. I realise its not quite the same as euro game with subs mid GW, but I feel like early season & still covid risks incline me to having a much stronger bench than most.

Want to play 352 as i think there's lots of good potential in 6.5-7m mids, allowing me a back 5 of sth like shaw targett coufal holding fofana that i can rotate in for a good chance of clean sheets. Rough team:
    Sanchez
    Shaw targett coufal
    Salah KDB/Bruno Barnes Saka Raphinha
    Watkins Nacho
    Subs: Bachmann holding fofana toney.

So do you think im wasting too much money on my bench?

    1. Holmes
      • 11 Years
      3 years, 5 months ago

I consider bench players as waste tbh as they dont perform when you need it. Two bench players are more than enough imo and anything more is overspending.

From that attack, I would drop one of midfielders or Toney.

    2. FPL Theorist
      • 5 Years
      3 years, 5 months ago

Yes, it's very different from Euros since you'll definitely have a lot of points wasted on your bench if you spend too much money there. Also, you get only 2 WC and 1 FH over a 38-GW season, and only 1 FT per week meaning a hit will likely be required to make multiple changes in a week.

If you want to play 3-5-2 (I am), then I'd recommend downgrading a striker and upgrading a defender to a premium Liverpool defender with their excellent fixtures.

So basically you'd rather invest in 3 def to play every game (using bench only to cover non-starters)..? I was planning to rotate all 5 (even shaw) to go with the 3 easiest fixtures every week (tho obv giving slight preference to shaw targett coufal as they have more attacking potential than holding & fofana).

Cantwell's a no-no with his opening fixtures. The bench is an utter disaster. Your 3 premiums is the cause of the imbalance.

Why don't you get just 2 premiums?

      Shaw game time post Euros?

Also wondering about Cantwell. Fixtures look abysmal but he isn't there for 3 pointers 🙂

Think you likely need to strip a bit out of defence to get the triple premium look.

With three big hitters you have to change formation imho. Cantwell to Bissouma and Lamptey + 1 starting def in. I personally might downgrade also Toney to get Digne / Cresswell / Coufal.

Views on whether Kane and Shaw will be ready/rested for first game?
Trent fit for first game? Thought he had an injury.
Any rotation issues with your playing 11 generally?
Given the above and general injuries whats your plan if only 8 turn out on GW1 given zero bench?

With that team the plan would have to be to have zero subs and no starting XI(?)

I appreciate all the responses thanks a lot.
And yes switching to 4-4-2 with another 4.5 def at least seems more sensible, I just find 4-4-2 looks boring lol

Starting to wonder if one premium is enough. So time for the first A/B question 😉 Which is better?

    A) Bruno, Buendia (/Raphinha), AWB
    B) Son, Rashford, Fofana

I would steer clear of Spurs for a start new manager - likely no Kane. Why will the Dynamic be like?
On paper A looks much safer imo.

Bugdget keepers seems to be an easy one.

I am really torn for one position in my team.

    5.5m for a defender.

Shaw on best form of his life - flying for England. Likely to need a rest after final plus playing Leeds first game. Leeds likely to score?

Digne - looks like a decent set of fixtures overall. Decent first one. Is the Rafa effect going to kick in straight away? Tighter at the back etc.
I could bench him for the leeds game.
Southampton, Brighton, and Burnley look decent for clean sheets. Villa Leeds I not so sure.

Cresswell - West Ham had a great season last year. Was it a one off?
But the Newcastle, Place and Southampton games look decent for clean sheets. Yet at the same time, On paper I would not be shocked if any of those sides scored against West Ham - Wilson, Zaha, Ings etc.

At the moment I am thinking of getting Digne. Nice and rested. Hoping for the Rafa effect and I could bench him v Leeds.

I think there is too much value at that price point, so having only one of them isn't enough. I have 3 atm, and will have at least two.

Very good point. It is a question of deciding whether over 10 fixtures is Digne + Shaw + Cresswell better than TAA plus 4.5's and one 5.5,

Yeah. He is a tactical genius but the Italy game will be a really tough one. Let’s see how he handles it regardless of if he wins or not, he is a fantastic manager

Thoughts on Phil Foden this season?

Think he will have more minutes or even be nailed on?

Worth having him over KdB and spend that extra £4 m elsewhere?

This^ is correct. Torres has same issue. People got burned last year with him, I expect the same roulette to happen again.

Burned? At one stage last season I had KDB captain and Foden VC. Both did not get any minutes.

If people want to go the City route. Spread the cash and have decent mid price subs from other teams is my advice.

I would be tempted with Mahrez well rested all summer and seems to be a player from City who always seems to be the forgotten man.

I'm putting him in to start (unless Kane goes to city in which case i will probably want Kane), plenty of good value bench cover for when he doesn't start, i think he gets circa 2250-2500 mins which is probably good enough for 175+ pts given his points accumulation rate per 90.

    Million dollar question:

    1. Sanchez/Steele
    Or
    2. Bachmann/Foster

I’m not down with rotating keepers from different teams. Too much of a gamble. Got it wrong every time last season.

Easy decision for me - I'd plump for the known quantity. In addition, they have the best opening fixtures from a defensive point of view.

I am the same it never works for me. I was going to go Sanchez initially east. But I just don't trust Brighton defensively. Plus I would likely have lamptey in a some stage. So double brighton defence does not look that good.

Going that extra .5 can get you Schmeichel one of the most saves of the cheaper keepers. In a decent defence. Or Pickford who on paper has great fixtures and is now with a defensive manager.

Based on one of the articles where it said Digne could be a doubt start of the season. I went for the value pick - of 'Pick-ford'. And the value pick of Forfana.

If you were to put a gun to my head I would go Sanchez out of your choices. However if I had Lamptey as well I would go for the Watford pairing. Spreads the risk and gives more likely save points.

      In answer t

Another poster pointed out to me that defence is where the 'value is this season'

There is a plethora of different combinations and options. I was sorry that I started tinkering with it.

At the moment I am on:

    Pickford
    Forfana-Lamptey-Robertson - (Shaw-Ayling)

Mainly because I think Everton should be decent/better defensively - Pickford the value pick from Everton (Digne might be injured start of season). Forfana the value pick from The Foxes - .5 cheaper than Schmeichel.
I think Shaw is more likely to concede v Leeds than Lamptey is at Burnley but it is a close call.

There are so many defensive options I am actually now tempted to go four or even five at the back. West Ham I am not sure of defensively but Cresswell is very attacking as is Tierney from Arsenal.

Before I was blinded by the 'Trent' and it limited my options. Going without any Liverpool defence.Opens up even more possibilities - Cresswell, Dias etc.

It really can be a minefield if you start looking into it.

Then you have to decide is the value in midfield or strikers - five at back not worth it? I think overall the pricing has been very good for the middle of the road type players. All tempting.
