FPL team guide 2021/22 – Manchester United: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Manchester United.

The Red Devils largely exceeded expectations in the Premier League in 2020/21 as they finished runners-up to their cross-city rivals.

They became only the fourth team in English top-flight history to go a full season unbeaten away from home, but some indifferent performances at Old Trafford suggest that improvement is needed if they are to mount a serious charge for the title next term.

Perhaps hit harder than most by the lack of fans in stadiums, United won just nine of their 19 Premier League home matches, as they failed to beat two of the relegated teams and only defeated two sides in the top half of the table.

The campaign culminated with a UEFA Europa League final loss against Villarreal, but despite a frustrating end, the word ‘progress’ feels like a fair assessment of their season.

We’ll delve into United’s numbers in the article below but remember that you can conduct your own FPL research into the Red Devils with our comprehensive Opta player and team data in our Premium Members Area.

THE ATTACK

The Complete Guide to FPL Triple Gameweek 35

Attacking wise, United ranked second for goals scored but just sixth for shots in the box and non-penalty expected goals (non-pen xG):

TotalRank v other Premier League sides
Goals732nd
Shots5264th
Shots in the box3246th
Shots on target2073rd
Big chances953rd
Expected goals (xG)60.904th
Non-penalty expected goals (non-pen xG)52.236th

During the season, Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side won 11 penalties, with Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) converting nine of his 10 attempts.

The Portuguese enjoyed an excellent first full season at United as he finished as the top-scoring Fantasy player with 18 goals, a further 14 assists and 244 FPL points.

His 121 goal attempts ranked third amongst all players, while his 20 big chances created and 9.67 expected assists (xA) were both league-leading totals.

Given his all-round potential for points, and the fact United have one of the more favourable opening schedules, it’s no surprise that Fernandes’ FPL ownership already sits at 41.9%.

Above: Manchester United’s fixtures Gameweeks 1-7

However, it is worth noting that his numbers did cool off a little during the final months, possibly due to fatigue given that Solskjaer insisted on playing him in pretty much every competitive fixture that United had to fulfil.

The Portugal international featured in 58 matches in all competitions last term, averaging just over 83 minutes per Premier League appearance.

Following his EURO 2020 excursions, Fernandes is set to return to United’s Carrington training base next week, but team-mate Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) may have to wait a while longer as it has been suggested that he will undergo shoulder surgery at the end of the month.

The England international’s form came under scrutiny during the run-in, but free from any complications next term, could he perhaps get back to his explosive best?

Solskjær was non-committal on whether or not he would undergo surgery when talking to the press last weekend, but it is clearly something that needs monitoring, as a period on the sidelines would have huge implications for FPL managers.

Without Rashford available, Mason Greenwood’s (£7.5m) early-season credentials may be given a boost. The 19-year-old was United’s stand-out performer during the final weeks of the season. In fact, six of his seven goals for the campaign, plus one of his assists, all arrived in his final eight outings. Having missed EURO 2020 due to a niggling injury, he could perhaps be one to watch if Rashford is ruled out for a prolonged spell.

Elsewhere, Edinson Cavani (£8.5m) will stay on for another year following a successful 2020/21.

Statistically, the Uruguayan ranked second amongst all forwards for big chances per 90 minutes, which does suggest that he might be a viable option for our forward lines in the opening weeks, at least until the Champions’ League group stages – and likely rotation for the veteran striker – begin in September.

Above: Forwards sorted by big chances (BCT) per 90 minutes 2020/21

The imminent arrival of Jadon Sancho, however, is surely where most FPL managers attention will lie, outside of Fernandes of course.

https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2021/07/03/how-does-jadon-sancho-compare-to-bruno-fernandes-and-other-united-fpl-assets/

It’s hard to speculate exactly where he will be stationed, at least initially, but if Rashford is indeed out, does it heighten the prospect of Sancho operating off the left?

It is worth noting that some of his best performances at Borussia Dortmund arrived from that flank, where he can cut inside onto his stronger foot.

However, he may well be needed on the right, an area United struggled to create from last season.

Anyone got a good team that has Son, Salah, Bruno and Kane in it?

Am willing to have a defence of Bachmann / Foster, Ayling, White, Fofana, Lamptey, Dier (or whichever Spurs 4.5m) to achieve it

      The only way is

      Banchmann, Foster
      Ayling, White, Fofana, Lamptey, Dier
      Salah, Son, Bruno, ESR, Dallas
      Kane, Toney, Obafemi

Or 160 is just Levy playing games.

"Yes you can go Harry but this is how we price you."

It's not even a given to me that Spurs would accept 160 mill despite this. There is always wiggle room for an out, Palace reportedly turned down a comparable (given players and clubs) 70/80 mill plus players for Zaha from Everton when Parish had his bluff called.

It's actually fine, the caveats are ESR becomes important, as does 3x 4.5 defeners - but the absolute pain in the arse with it is missing out on all the lovely punty midprice guys (say bye-bye to all but one or two of Nacho, Bamford, Antonio, Watkins, Buendia, Grealish, Wilson, Barnes, DCL, etc etc)

          Try something like

          4.5
          TAA, 5.5, 4.5, 4.5 (4.5)
          Bruno, Salah, Harrison, ESR (4.5)
          Kane, 7.5 (4.5)

And obviously that it pretty much necessitates a non 3-4-3 unless you want to dip into Ashley Barnes or Danny Welbeck territory - although arguably you could squeeze the 5.5 defender down to 4.5 and go to 3-4-3 with Toney third striker...

But 5.5 defender looks like one of the most promising brackets this season

I have my doubts about Sancho

He'll do well I think, but if he's 10m I doubt he'll be worth it. I'm always surprised whenever a new player enters PL, even when they are some of the best players in the world they kind of underperform first year (Bruno the exception).

Look at Havertz, Werner, Di Maria, Falcao, Cuadrado, Higuain, Robinho, Depay, Morata and the list goes on...

      1. Paqueta Rice
        • 3 Years

If Sancho never can to the PL I would still rank him better than all of those mentioned I think. His numbers are great and doesn’t need as much adapting as those foreign players as he has grown up playing with Man City. I don’t know, I think he will be great.

For sure exciting, I like the fact that he's coming. But I think he's a trap (as Werner last year).

Might be different if injuries secures starts every game from GW1...

I hope so. We'll have the chance to find out very soon. I won't be going for him gw1 though. I've currently got Bruno. It's easier to start with money invested in 3 key player positions (rather than itb) and then branch out to better value players via a possible gw3 mini-wc restructure.

Would be great at 9m but think he'll be 10/10.5 personally. Got Rashford as the current placeholder but 10/10.5 would require dropping Robo down to 6m to get him in and not mess with my structure too much.

Why is he a must have at City tho? R u saying he'll be getting 30 goals and 20 assists now instead of the 25 and 15? I feel like it's unlikely he'll improve that much in total points considering he'll probbaly be benched more often than at Spurs (even 6-7 games is too much for 12.5m captain option and that will happen most likely in the easier games.) Bruno and Salah are equally good options in my eyes. Everyone is just swayed because it's City.

I think you are underestimating how big this would be. He could score 35+ goals in a season.

Lewandowski only played 29 games for Bayern this year and scored 41 goals.

Unfortunately I'd err on the side of caution & advise (strongly) against starting without him if he's at city

I'm not a massive Kane fan - but any striker nailed on up front for City on penalties is an incredibly dangerous FPL asset not to own

Whether it was Kane, Lewandoski, Haaland, Ings...

To be honest if City signed Ashley Barnes and you knew he was going to start pretty much every game (which is the real attraction with Kane) he'd be in everyone's team even with a massive price rise

I tend to agree with Zimo.

Why would Kane not be subject to rotation just like every other City striker?

What makes you think he doesn’t drop deep and with the wealth of mids that City have any one of them can score.

My issue with Kane is that somewhere along the line you sacrifice a well balanced team full of bags of potential points for one player.

Because there really is no way to have Kane, TAA, Bruno and Salah plus some of those juicy £7.5 strikers, £5.5 defenders and £6.5 mids.

In the end do you end up sacrificing too much just for one player?

Stranger things have happened than Guardiola benching Kane for 15 league games so it's certainly not impossible

But I'd personally eat my hat if he didn't play every game he was fit - at 160m

(Later stages of Europe may see occasional benchings, but that's way out in March/April next year)

Kane would have even higher potential than Salah or Bruno with the City team's service + penalties

Starting without is just not a risk worth taking at all imo - and its painful to only be able to have one or two punty midprice players instead of 3 or 4 - I really hope he doesn't go to City

I understand the appeal, and Ie gone on record here several times as saying I think Kane is one of the best strikers on this planet so it's not that I don't rate him.

But I look at what having him does to most teams, with the price points being as they are for other established premium players and I can't help but get the feeling that what you'll gain by shoehorning Kane into your team could well be less than what you'll actually get by holding your nerve and spreading the wealth.

I could be wrong, but I'm probably going to be one of this people that everyone preseason is going to mock because I'm not going all out for Kane at Man City.

Last season taught me that sometimes it's the people who are brave enough to do what everyone else is too scared to do that end up doing best.

Its not specifically the appeal of Kane as the player though - its the generic appeal of A.N.Other striker nailed into a Man City team, and starting from a baseline of 10 penalties

It will be a VERY strange universe if Man City spend 160m on a striker and don't play him every week (when he's effectively the only/best striker on their books) - but we do live in a strange universe and Pep is a strange fish

But if we set up a situation where Ashley Barnes, Danny Welbeck or even Ricky Gervais were nailed into the Man City forward line every week, they'd have 50% ownership overnight even with huge price rises

Kun missed very few really when fit - once that is he persuaded Pep he was a team player and saw off the initial challenge of Jesus. Don't think there is any doubt of Kane workmate.

                  Yes, but, well...

Pep tends to mess around with strikers the first season he has them. Did it with Eto'o, did it with Lewandowski (made him play wide left a fair bit), did it with Kun. Will he do the same with Kane? You'd think not but Eto'o, Lewa and Kun were all great strikers at their prime too. The one thing that makes me think it may be different this time is that Kane already likes to drop deep and play like a false #9, allowing others to get beyond him.

In which case, it may well be that the biggest beneficiaries of a Kane move would be the wide attackers. I could well see Mahrez making nonsense of a 9m valuation this season and he also has the benefit that he'll be 100% ready for GW1, something that can't be said of Kane, Sterling, Foden, Torres and possibly KDB as well.

Fascinating point that- hadn't thought to look at Pep in prior incarnations and only take limited interest in Euro footie.

Eto'o I sort of get but Lewa out wide!!!! Was there an element of his not being that keen on them and was trying to drive them out as Cruyff did to Lineker at Barca by putting him on the wing.

                    Agree on Mahrez

Eto'o, well you probably don't realise how good he was at that time. He averaged .75 goals per game in La Liga for Barcelona over 5 seasons, that's better than Kun did at City (.67 goals per game). He was world-class and he wasn't finished, scored 53 for Inter in 2 seasons after Pep sold him and helped them to a CL win.

It's not a matter of driving them out, it's more a matter of bending them to his will. Pep is on record as saying that is ideal team would be a GK and 10 midfielders because midfielders think of the whole game, not just a part of it. He has never liked out-and-out strikers. That's why it may be different with Kane because he has not been a 'pure' striker for a long time really.

                        Yep

Spot on I hadn't realised quite how good Eto'o had been at Barca - the Inter bit I do remember and my lack of surprise is down to how Mou used him there. But the key difference here for me is that Kane would not be an inherited player he didn't 100% fancy but one bought in by Pep.

The ten midfielders quote does sound familiar but I suspect a throw away line. He sold Eto'o to buy Zlatan no?

Also has he "developed" as a manager and decided there is a more of place for an out and out goalscorer over the years - albeit one who is not invisible in general play? There was a stage was there not when he went relatively - for him - direct at Bayern. Did that coincide with the rehabilitation of Lewa as a CF? And he was fond enough of Kun after all. Again I might be misremembering but the false 9 approach at City only ever really reared its head when Kun was out.

Yes, he could easily get 35 goals in that City team. If he put up those numbers at Spurs imagine what he'd do in a free flowing Guardiola team with De Bruyne, Sterling, Foden, Mahrez and co. providing for him.

As Lateriser pointed out on twitter, over the last four seasons City have on average scored 29 more goals a season than Spurs.

Given the gulf in terms of creativity in both sides, I would struggle to reasonably frame any argument where Kane isn't *definitely* a more dangerous FPL player at City.

It's not easy to just play in another team. We've seen how Kane is alot more subdued with England. Totally different systems and players may mean he takes a while to adapt to City. Conversely, with so many playmakers around him, he may just be allowed to goalhang and then score 30+. Probably a wait and see imo.

It's nearly always to the detriment of an FPL team to have 3 premiums.

The good/lucky are able to switch them around at the key moments. Fixtures/form are obviously there to see but luck definitely plays a part.

Kane, Salah, and Bruno will require some swapping around, for sure. Perhaps Man Utd may not be as reliant on Bruno anymore and he may be one that can drop out. It's a wait and see, obviously

Surely he won't play in gw1 as city play spurs and can see there being some kind of agreement in place....

So do you bench him for gw1??

I think you have to start with him. If he takes a while to settle or is just as susceptible to Pep roulette then you can move to any other striker. However if he is straight in the team and hits the ground running you're going to have to rip up your team to get him in and his high ownership will be punishing.

I like the look of my first draft, with only two premiums in, too much to get another.

Having said that, if Kane goes to City I’d certainly look at dropping Fernandes for Kane.

Whether I’d do that in the first week is the other issue. It may be sensible to wait and see and pick someone like Mahrez instead due to rest etc.

I guess my logic is Kane will score a butt-load of goals at City and the vast majority of players will captain him week in week out but....I still think Bruno and Salah will score big this season also and I don't want to miss those points, even if not captained..

Do you feel I would be better off spreading the money more evenly throughout the team and leaving the armband on Kane?

of course they will score big but thats what you are paying for. even in a good season, they will unlikely top 250 points which is 20pts/million spent. there are many many players who outperform them pound for pound, and thats before we talk about targeting form/fixtures. we go for the premiums because the captaincy doubles there score and to some extent they are more predictable than the other assets. if you perma captain one player the other premiums lose a lot of their lustre, because the argument will be Bruno + cheapies, or a premium defence + grealish where the latter is much better of course.

          Exactly this!
Big hitters = captaincy choice increasing their value. There comes a point that if you're not captaining one of them, then the value decreases and is better spread around.

1 thing I hadn't considered if this move does happen is that there may be a need to HAVE Kane just to be on an even pegging with the bulk of others from the off.

Personally, I think he'd be great until Europe starts. Then the rotation will kick in fully.....

For me, it's Salah & Bruno as captain choices whilst Kane is at Spurs.

Arsenal have gone from being a team with no DM and 6 AM, to a team with 6 DM and 1 AM.

Like many clubs Arsenal are struggling financially and need to move players on. Unfortunately the ones they want to move on, nobody wants. Willock falls into the category where there are interested suitors so I could see him moving just to balance the books.

It actually looks like Arsenal have a plan now (rather than buying Kia's dead wood), and might be a team going in the right direction over the next couple of seasons. Balogun is another exceptional talent btw.

          Smith Rowe (20); Saka (19): Martinelli (20); Tierney (24); Balogun (20); Sambi (21); Ben White? (23).

Yep it's a good season to be a buying club with cash and a tricky one if you need to sell to buy.

Plenty is different of course and it's an ambitious parallel but squint a little and there is a whiff of early Spurs under Poch if Arteta can get it right. No Kane the big miss of course and really tricky to get too far without reliable goals. Lot depends on Auba?

Is Reiss Nelson still considered a big talent? Like Willock I'd have thought he fell into the category where a loan was way more preferable than a sale all else being equal.

the ones that have broken through are Saka, Martinelli & ESR.

Nketiah, Nelson, Willock, AMN are all decent squad players but if they were top tier they would have won a place by now i suspect. they all at some point will probably prefer to be first team choices at mid-table or relegation clubs.

He actually explained that "upside chasing" makes sense from 14 or 15 game week onwards when you got plenty of data to help you find next big scoring player.

Makes sense. By that point the majority of FPL managers are fairly locked in to their current premiums either because of value tied up and/or fear of ownership.

    Template

    4.5 / 4
    TAA / 5.5 / 5.5 / 4.5 / 4.5 - great value at both of these price points, but 0.5m can be found once the 4m emerges
    Salah / 7.5 / 6.5 / 5.5 / 4.5 - like the 7.5 slot for non-nailed premiums (jota, greenwood, mount, pepe, foden, pulisic) + value/enablers
Kane / 7.5 / 7.5 - there are 6(!) viable options at 7.5, and little difference between them and the 8 bracket.

Its very easy to switch over to a bruno team if desired, simply swap the 7.5 mid for an 8m forward.

This is only if Kane goes to City. If he doesn't, I don't really care to have him. Forwards are not worth as much as mids. Kane put up top G/A stats last season and wasn't even the top-scoring player in the game.

yes but an easy switch. in fact its only 2 transfers to move between the two, so I dont see why people are saying they need to rip up there teams for Kane. i have discarded all drafts in the past month that spread value around too much because of this - it has to be Bruno or Kane imo.

of course there is some flex in the above, Havertz is an option if chelsea dont sign a forward; ESR might not be to everyones tastes (I will probably avoid to start), Toney & Welbeck offer a cheaper forward option to start with, and some may prefer Robbo over Jota, say.

I’ll be amazed if Sancho is less than 10.0M. Identical 149 goals and assists to Rashford in his career, in 104 less games. Irrelevant of leagues, with Rashford out and Sancho to be nailed on, 9.5M will be a steal and FPL will know this. Can see them squeezing him inbetween Bruno and Rashford. Make people think a bit

Good point, still even Havertz went to the PL for more than Werner and Sancho and had very similar goal contributions in the Bundesliga in his last season there compared to Sancho the season just gone (12g 6a / 8g 12a) and was only 8.5.

Before last night Kane and Son weren't seen near pretty much anyone's team, now seems like a lot are rushing to try and fit one or both of them in. If Haaland joins Chelsea it'll happen all again. The joys of pre-season FPL! It can suck to know you have to miss out on some big hitters but I think overall it's good for a bit of variety between teams forcing people to make the choice to leave out bigger players

Not according to Fabrizio, just seems that Dortmund (much like with Sancho last season) have a high price they want for him and if they get offered it he'll go, otherwise it'll be for €75m next season but they know Chelsea are interested. Kane moving to City might push Abramovich to move

I don't bother seriously making a team until the week before the transfer deadline. It's pointless up until that point.

The like of even Max Aarons going to Arsenal, or a pre-season injury ensuring a budget player becomes a starter, is all it takes for complete rejigs.

The initial template always looked a bit odd to me with all those interchangeable mid-priced attackers.

Transfers are changing perspectives but I also suspect that the closer we get to week 1 the more people will decide that a glut of long term value players isn't how they want to play it and will set up to attack this season and not defend last season.

This is already happening ind defence where double Liverpool is now on trend whereas it was almost nowhere to be seen early on.
