FPL Masterclass

How many ‘proven’ FPL players should I pick in GW1 – and how many gambles?

Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with regular Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to bench strength.

Our trio of top managers will also be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season – and only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in full.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

Having previously provided general advice for FPL managers ahead of the upcoming campaign, our panel now look at the composition of a Gameweek 1 squad: how many ‘proven’ assets should we be focusing on and is it wise to avoid any gambles?

LATERISER SAID…

I fear that because of what happened with Timo Werner (£9.0m) and Kai Havertz (£8.5m) last season, the running narrative will be to not indulge in new imports into the league. But we must remember that for every Werner and Havertz, there has also been a Diego Costa, Michu, Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) who took the league by storm from the start.

The point I’m trying to make here though is that when it comes to new imports into the league, the case is very subjective and based on your judgement of the player and his role in the team. Based on what happened last season, though, I do have a theory in my head that I’m willing to test out.

I feel like the case with Chelsea was a unique one, with Frank Lampard fielding a largely new team instead of it being the case of adding one attacker to an already settled side. When it comes to these premium clubs and marquee signings, I’d be more willing to roll the dice if it’s just one addition to a tried-and-trusted starting XI – which was not the case with the Blues.

That was my opinion about newer teams. Even when it comes to promoted sides, we have seen that clubs like Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers have had a fast start in the league.

So I’m not completely against gambles in your Gameweek 1 squads but there does need to be a balance and your picks need to be heavily researched.

When it comes to promoted sides, it is a relative shot in the dark when it comes to anticipating how they are going to adapt to the standards of the Premier League. Similarly, when it comes to new managers at clubs, we aren’t exactly sure about player roles under the set up-of the new head coach.

So out of all these three categories, I’d cap ‘risky’ picks at two in my Gameweek 1 team. If you do want to indulge in more punts, I’d definitely not do it with the premium options. One risky heavy hitter (if at all) is the most I’d go with.

I learnt the hard way last year that it is very important to not stray too far from the pack early on as it can lead to you ‘trying things’ too early in the season, which might derail your campaign.

TOM SAID…

I always like to have a couple of proven premiums in my squad, mainly for captaincy. That’s usually Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) plus one other, which has generally served me well in the past and is something I’ll do again next season.

In terms of gambles, balance is key. I certainly wouldn’t load up on them, but don’t have a problem starting with two or three in my initial squad. For every player who takes a little longer to acclimatise to the Premier League, there is always another who will hit the ground running, like Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) and Ollie Watkins (£7.5m).

I suppose the newly-promoted players are classified as gambles, too, but I don’t necessarily see it like this. They are mostly budget picks, and if you adopt a ‘wait and see’ policy like most preach, it’s often too late. Capitalising on these teams is all about ensuring you have them for that first top-flight game in front of the fans, and sometimes before that initial momentum wears off.

I started with Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford (£8.0m) and Luke Ayling (£4.5m) in 2020/21; before that, it was Sheffield United’s Dean Henderson (£5.0m) and John Lundstram in 2019/20. I suspect one or two from Brentford will be making an appearance next season, too.

ZOPHAR SAID…

To answer this question, first I must define what I consider a ‘gamble’. Players from promoted teams fit into this category as we do not know how they and their team as a whole will adapt to the Premier League. The jump in standard is massive and we have seen clubs that topped the Championship finish bottom of the Premier League (Norwich comes to mind) the next season.

Transfers from foreign leagues are also a ‘wait and watch’ for me as the physical nature of the Premier League can be a challenge for an overseas asset to get used to. This does depend from player to player though. I went early on the likes of Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Eden Hazard as I trusted them to be world-class talents who were already playing at a top level and had no doubts about their ability to cut it in the Premier League.

Thirdly, players from teams under new management would also be classified as a gamble for me. We do not know what sort of philosophy the new manager would like to implement, what his preferred starting line-up would be and who would be their talisman. For example, any Crystal Palace asset would be a massive gamble to start with in my opinion as I simply do not know how they will play under Patrick Vieira after a defence-first approach under Roy Hodgson for many years.

I did break this rule due to my Chelsea bias last season by going with both Kai Havertz (£8.5m) and Timo Werner (£9.0m) but usually I like to have no more than one ‘gamble’ in my Gameweek 1 squad. My FPL motto is, ‘better to be late to the party than to turn up early and find out there’s no party at all’. I make sure I set up my initial squad in such a way that I can get the ‘gambles’ with one transfer if they hit the ground running.

Kane. No idea why they even want Grealish. Pep will just face the same problem England did, all of Sterling, Grealish, and Foden are best as left wingers.

City like any modern club follow players based on objective independent metrics which can describe a 100 different attributes

Why are City after Grealish? simple, he is producing for a long time elite elite level metrics in a number of metrics which only a handful of players in the world can.

City are of course interested in that type of player, on top he is Englis and league proven. Anyone with a passing interest in any football would have known this ( like all elite clubs have ) for years on Grealish. Spurs were after him nearly half a decade ago for the same reasons.

Elite level problem solving players at their disposal left on the bench mostly.

Interesting how much extra interest there is in Kane now that it looks like he's going to City.

Will that mean he scores more goals or has more assists than last year?? He'll certainly have less Premier League minutes at City

I take Kane with less minutes playing as forward with City's creative force to supply him over Kane playing 90 minutes every game as creative force for mediocre Spurs.

But he’s the main man at Spurs. Lots of mouths to feed at City.

And if a prime Aguero, with pens never got 300 FPL points why do we think Kane is a lock to do it?

Don't need him to score 300 points, 250 will suffice and playing for City he can easily achieve it.

Given how Havertz and Werner suffered from Bundesliga tax i have done some investigating to really get an idea of what to expect from Sancho.

Both Werner and Havertz had the stats in the Bundesliga, but poor returns in Europe and the International stage. So, i looked at Sanchos

Sancho in the CL: 21 appearances, 5 goals, 6 assists. Just about a single return every other game.

Dortmund in them 3 campaigns in Europe: 39 goals. So Sancho had 11 goal involvements out of the 39 Dortmund scored.

For England, Sancho has just 3 goals in 22 caps, only one being in whats classed as a competitive game.

Sancho has 5 returns in his last 6 champions league appearances though… (4 starts/2 subs)

And 9 returns in his last 11 champions league appearances… (9 starts 2 subs)

There is no such thing as the Bundesliga tax

Werner and Havertz joined a team with no attacking structure under a poor manager together with a bunch of other new signings

Werner in his whole career played off a target man in Germany, Lampard made him the CF , making it pretty difficult to suceed

Havertz played mostly at CF or AM in germany with excellent stats. Lampard started him mostly at right wing.

If Sancho starts RW he will continue to produce at a similar level.
He has never been a starter yet for England - so the majority of his appearances are off the bench introduced into friendlies with another 5-6 changes.

All these things matter. He has shown when playing with elite attackers he can produce elite number when played in the right position

Salah at Chelsea / KDB at Chelsea , where and in what system you play matters more than any 'tax'.

Lets see how elite Brunos stats are if United play him DM next year

You are just seeing excuses because you have taken a simple narrative explanation and dont want that questioned

Havertz and Sancho wont be 8,5mil and 9,5mil next year on fpl if they get 30+ starts in their preferred positions

Every independent metric over a number of years tracking them by every Elite club is predicting against your opinion which is based on not much more than a feeling

Why do you think Liverpool were willing to pay 60mil on Salah who had only 2 years prior failed at Chelsea? Or City with KDB

          Everything is tracked now..

Listen, European and International stats says a lot about a player. Seen nothing from Havertz to suggest he'll outperform his 8.5m tag.

European and International stats like :
              - Scoring the winning goal at what? (21-22 years) old in both CL final and semi finals
              - Playing CF and scoring for a non elite ( lacking creativity) Germany team at a major International competition and being one of the only positives

I mean he is probably in his age group (22 year olds) one of the surest things for the next 10 years

How many others at his age are playing at his level?

Germany scored 6 goals and he scored 1. There are many players who are under 23 playing better football than Havertz.

United have Greenwood ( in full preseason) + Martial ( still to ease back to full training) + Rashford ( likely to be out) + Cavani (35 nearly) + Sancho (almost record signing) as options

Id be massively surprised if its not Sancho Cavani (rotating with Martial ) + Greenwood as the front 3 initially.

They have almost nobody else to chose from.

Bruno at that price is a captain or not worth it.

You wouldn’t have a 5.0m starter in midfield though.
So it would be Bruno + 4.5 bench fodder and change formation.

Came across a creepy video about Ali Krieger's ACL injury if anyone wants some ASMR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1grA6u6aRI

"Ali, I hope this kind of helps you. I know I'm only 16 but I've had two ACL tears and I think I learned a lot. Stay strong, baby girl. You'll make it."

This video really builds. It's my lady jam.

Feel really set with this team

    Sanchez, 4.0
    TAA, Digne, Shaw, (Lamptey, Ayling)
    Salah, Bruno, Jota, ESR, Torres
    Watkins, Antonio, (4.5)

Only thing up in the air for me is the Torres spot.

Could go to Buendia/Bowen and bank the 0.5
I like Barnes too if he seems to be in favor.
    Maybe Dele Alli?

If you're stuck between two players on your team, give this a look:

    Thoughts?

    Sanchez
    Taa shaw digne (manquillo lamptey)
    Bruno salah buendia raph (gilmour)
    Antonio watkins iheanacho

Thinking to fit ESR but not sure.

Guys, how’s this team looking now?
My biggest consideration is ditching Bruno and spreading funds but scared of that

    Sanchez
    Trent Shaw Lamptey
    Salah Bruno Beundia Raphinia
    Cavani Watkins Nacho

    Steer Ayling Brownhill Manquillo

Increasingly tempted to make my week 1 gamble Jim - nothing like betting on a known quantity.

Thinking over fixtures I'm not too concerned. None of Leicester Spurs and United are especially proven as cs teams - more like teams that are likely to concede fairly minimally - a different concept.

He'd come at the cost of Watkins but Ollie simply did last season what Jim consistently did previously - no more explosive than Jim.

Start with Watkins, move to Jim after a couple of weeks

The moment you move either of them you lose value - they both work because they tick over consistently. I'd much much prefer to have that spot as a relatively fixed point and not a planned transfer.

I'm sceptical that Villa are going to explode goals early on which seems to be the basis of many selections on here.

      is Jim Jiminez?

      this is a fun idea.

        Yep

7.0 mid is also on the radar for me as a slot where I'll do something slightly different than most on here. If Barnes makes the Community Shield match I'm going to be sorely tempted. Another known quantity that is under the radar.

Although that 4.5 mid would get me at most 3 points, or seldom a goal or the assist.
There is a case to be me made for 0.5 ITB, if there is a bandwagon emerging, it's easier to jump on him with extra money itb.

At the moment, my team looks like this -
            Sanchez
            TAA-Robbo-Coufal-White (4.0)
            Salah-Bruno-Raph-Buendia (Harrison)
            Watkins-Antonio (4.5)
So, basically, it's either a interchanging between 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 or between 4-4-2 and 4-3-3.

I know we all have transfers but I like to pick my team for the long term so that when I need to put out fires etc I can do it with minimum hits.

Having said that do we expect both TAA and Robbo to be amongst the top scoring defenders this year?

If yes then why are many not going for both to start with?

Swap Bruno with Son in the template and it's easily affordable.

It's not as if Son can't keep up with Bruno but can a 5.5 defender keep up with Robbo?

    What do you think?

They'll be among the top scoring defenders for certain - barring injury. They also cost 14.5 combined. I'll be avoiding the double up very early for these reasons. They are generally predicated on the idea the double up is unavoidable value only with cs and wait and see is a prudent strategy

you need to go back 18 months to find consistent clean sheets - it's not simply absence of VVD
VVD form on return an unknown
also unknown who will partner VVD and how that works
defensive midfield looks different now - that counts towards defence
very early fixtures mixed - weeks 3 and 4 are poor so no hurry
multiple midpriced attackers make a swap of funds to the back very straightforward without juggling funds elsewhere

Also typically cs fall in runs and not consistently through season. Thinking it is more efficient to hop on the double up when form is established.

Also VVD has histrocally been a better value selection than Robbo - the 0.5 differential is odd when you look at returns.

Plenty of options around 5.o and 5,5 elsewhere

Might just punt on big Virg if he can get fit and skip Trent. Several 7.5 FWDs have a decent shot of finishing within spitting distance of Trent for points, and I'd back Virg to outscore any FWD his price or lower.
