FPL Masterclass

How many ‘proven’ FPL players should I pick in GW1 – and how many gambles?

Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with regular Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to bench strength.

Our trio of top managers will also be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season – and only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in full.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

Having previously provided general advice for FPL managers ahead of the upcoming campaign, our panel now look at the composition of a Gameweek 1 squad: how many ‘proven’ assets should we be focusing on and is it wise to avoid any gambles?

LATERISER SAID…

I fear that because of what happened with Timo Werner (£9.0m) and Kai Havertz (£8.5m) last season, the running narrative will be to not indulge in new imports into the league. But we must remember that for every Werner and Havertz, there has also been a Diego Costa, Michu, Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) who took the league by storm from the start.

The point I’m trying to make here though is that when it comes to new imports into the league, the case is very subjective and based on your judgement of the player and his role in the team. Based on what happened last season, though, I do have a theory in my head that I’m willing to test out.

I feel like the case with Chelsea was a unique one, with Frank Lampard fielding a largely new team instead of it being the case of adding one attacker to an already settled side. When it comes to these premium clubs and marquee signings, I’d be more willing to roll the dice if it’s just one addition to a tried-and-trusted starting XI – which was not the case with the Blues.

That was my opinion about newer teams. Even when it comes to promoted sides, we have seen that clubs like Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers have had a fast start in the league.

So I’m not completely against gambles in your Gameweek 1 squads but there does need to be a balance and your picks need to be heavily researched.

When it comes to promoted sides, it is a relative shot in the dark when it comes to anticipating how they are going to adapt to the standards of the Premier League. Similarly, when it comes to new managers at clubs, we aren’t exactly sure about player roles under the set up-of the new head coach.

So out of all these three categories, I’d cap ‘risky’ picks at two in my Gameweek 1 team. If you do want to indulge in more punts, I’d definitely not do it with the premium options. One risky heavy hitter (if at all) is the most I’d go with.

I learnt the hard way last year that it is very important to not stray too far from the pack early on as it can lead to you ‘trying things’ too early in the season, which might derail your campaign.

TOM SAID…

I always like to have a couple of proven premiums in my squad, mainly for captaincy. That’s usually Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) plus one other, which has generally served me well in the past and is something I’ll do again next season.

In terms of gambles, balance is key. I certainly wouldn’t load up on them, but don’t have a problem starting with two or three in my initial squad. For every player who takes a little longer to acclimatise to the Premier League, there is always another who will hit the ground running, like Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) and Ollie Watkins (£7.5m).

I suppose the newly-promoted players are classified as gambles, too, but I don’t necessarily see it like this. They are mostly budget picks, and if you adopt a ‘wait and see’ policy like most preach, it’s often too late. Capitalising on these teams is all about ensuring you have them for that first top-flight game in front of the fans, and sometimes before that initial momentum wears off.

I started with Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford (£8.0m) and Luke Ayling (£4.5m) in 2020/21; before that, it was Sheffield United’s Dean Henderson (£5.0m) and John Lundstram in 2019/20. I suspect one or two from Brentford will be making an appearance next season, too.

ZOPHAR SAID…

To answer this question, first I must define what I consider a ‘gamble’. Players from promoted teams fit into this category as we do not know how they and their team as a whole will adapt to the Premier League. The jump in standard is massive and we have seen clubs that topped the Championship finish bottom of the Premier League (Norwich comes to mind) the next season.

Transfers from foreign leagues are also a ‘wait and watch’ for me as the physical nature of the Premier League can be a challenge for an overseas asset to get used to. This does depend from player to player though. I went early on the likes of Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Eden Hazard as I trusted them to be world-class talents who were already playing at a top level and had no doubts about their ability to cut it in the Premier League.

Thirdly, players from teams under new management would also be classified as a gamble for me. We do not know what sort of philosophy the new manager would like to implement, what his preferred starting line-up would be and who would be their talisman. For example, any Crystal Palace asset would be a massive gamble to start with in my opinion as I simply do not know how they will play under Patrick Vieira after a defence-first approach under Roy Hodgson for many years.

I did break this rule due to my Chelsea bias last season by going with both Kai Havertz (£8.5m) and Timo Werner (£9.0m) but usually I like to have no more than one ‘gamble’ in my Gameweek 1 squad. My FPL motto is, ‘better to be late to the party than to turn up early and find out there’s no party at all’. I make sure I set up my initial squad in such a way that I can get the ‘gambles’ with one transfer if they hit the ground running.

Morning. By playing around I've somehow found a team I don't hate with 1.5M left over

    Sanchez
    TAA Dias Lampty
    Salah Raphina Bruno Buendia
    Toney Wilson Watkins

    4.0 Cody Brownhill 4.0
    1.5 M ITB

Things will obviously change but with this loose structure-
    Sanchez to Henderson? Leaves 1M
    Brownhill to 5.5? Leaves 0.5
Lampty/ Cody to anyone up to 6
    Some other use?

Any general thoughts really welcome, would love to be able to keep a little in the bank for once to ride out early price changes (wont happen!)

I have worked out if i keep the 1.5M ITB I can later look at-
      Bruno to Sancho
      and Buendia to Son
with 0.5 left, yes i know this level of planning forward is silly, I'm just bored!

I like the rotation between arsenal/wolves/leeds/Brighton that goes significantly into the season.

I'm rocking 3-5-2 with ESR as a 5th mid in a rotation with Lamptey and Firpo. I may pickup a wolves player later to complete the cycle, potentially the Barcelona loanee Trinicao, who's at 6m and has previously had high xG.

I cannot for the life of me understand the amount of people bringing in Jota when he started 12 games last season. Give it a few weeks at least and see if he's actually in the team.

Firmino likely to miss start of season so Jota takes his place (Norwich then Burnley). Also Jota averages a goal every 123 minutes.

Goals per minute means nothing when you play 1000 minutes a season. Firmino out would give him a good chance of playing temporarily at least.

…he was injured and unavailable for 3 months. Unlikely that happens again. Sure he’ll be rotated at times. Lots of players will be.

Yes of course he was injured but he wasn't nailed before or after that regardless. Klopp's preferred formation is always 4-3-3 and the front three are Mane-Firmino-Salah. Lot of players will be rotated and none of those players will be in my team. Go pick Foden and Mahrez to play every other game, that's a lot of money for rotation.

Folks, with Sancho in, what is our view on Greenwood? How much gametime do you expect of him this coming season? Where do you see him being deployed the most in the front three?

Don't think Greenwood is an option unless someone gets injured. Will get some starts and a lot of sub appearances but can't see him starting consistently ahead of Sancho and Cavani.

Someone has to play left while Rashford is out, and Martial isn't exactly nailed. That being said, I wouldn't touch Greenwood.

Could be Sancho left and Greenwood right while Rashford is out but could just as easily be Sancho on the right with Martial or Pogba left.

That’s where he gets his goals from because he can cut in and shoot on his right foot.

United’s weak point last season was RW so you have to think that’s why they got him and that’s where they’d look to play him. In that position he’s likely to be more of an assisted, looking to get into the biz and cut the ball back.

Bruno could be the new Lampard with Sancho on RW.

I'd say you're right here. Martial favours that LW when playing with a striker he can play off whereas Cavani is looking for service.

Sancho - Cavani - Greenwood would be my shout too.

Up to you, but we know Toon don't create many chances and the few they do, it's Wilson who puts them away. I'm not saying Toney's a must-have; I'm saying ASM is a bad pick, imo.

I want one of my striker slots to be no more than 6.5 so I’m just weighing out the options

Welbeck would be choice after Toney.

Isn’t the BHA striker position contested by Maupay?
                I don’t want a rotation risk...

I got the impression Maupay had a dreadful season and was replaced by Welbeck later on, who did far better. Plus Brighton could go 2 up top. Don't quote me on that though - I don't have any of these picks so haven't looked too deeply.

If Welbeck is first choice I’d definitely pick him. That’d be another 0.5 itb

Yeah. A few people are on Pukki and Benteke could be a contender. Not for me though. But it might all change if 6.5 Tammy moves and is first choice.

Could be great, could be awful.

For the reasons Andy suggested I’d go with Toney or Welbeck to start off with.

Toney should tick over nicely as a 3rd striker or Kane enabler. As much as we have seen what the Premier League has done to strikers who have torn up the Championship the year before, Toney may well fare better than most of the rest.

Even a modest season should justify his inclusion at that price point.

Welbeck has great early fixtures and like Antonio at West Ham you may as well ride them before the inevitable injury happens to them both.

Planning to start with this bunch:
    Sanchez
    TAA Robertson Coufal
    Salah(c) Pulisic Mahrez Raphina
    Antonio Iheanacho Watkins
    Foster Lamptey Ayling Brownhill

Do you think Pulisic is nailed? I don't think he is. With him AND Mahrez at the heart of your midfield, I'd call that a punt too far. The rest is solid, standard.

Hard to say. His rival for RWB is club captain Azpili who also plays right of CB.

If Ben White does indeed go to Arsenal he is nailed to start each game do you think?

Do you think he splits time with Chambers?

Chambers did really well for Arsenal last season, seems a bit harsh to bomb him out for White.

Obviously they won’t spend £50m for a bench player, but…….

Chambers has never really nailed a spot. I'm expecting him and Holding to spend time on the bench. We'll see.

I actually meant Holding, not sure why I had Chambers in my mind at the time.

            Question answered anyway.

      Lamptey, Ayling, Fofana, White.

      Fofana, Ayling, Bednarik, Lowton.

Those are the ones that are nailed.

There are lots of potentially good ‘uns if they prove they are nailed:

Ait Nourri, Lamptey, Veltman, Rico Henry (BRE), Holgate, Bavies, Aaron’s (is nailed but early fixtures are an issue), Kiko Femenía, Ben White, Tyreek Mitchell (he could be FPL gold this season) and Adam Masina.

Lamptey has the highest ceiling, but for me Veltman is the issue because ostensibly they play the same position. Based on Veltman’s play last year there’s no way Potter should drop him. That means Lamptey has to play further forward.

Tyreek Mitchell and Ait Nourri can be absolute budget beasts if Vierra and Lage start them and both teams play to their respective managers strengths.

I think Veltmann's more likely to take the White vacancy. Friendlies will cast more light in due course.

Sancho ,as expected, adds another alternative to premium assets at 3 mil cheaper than ones on show atm.
Do we want a Sancho and Son rather than a Bruno and a 7 mil mid range?
Coming from a German side and his age as it is, puts me off somewhat, no matter the noise surrounding him. That is not to say I feel the same way as many others: the excitement etc.
Practically, we can bounce around Havertz, Mahrez, Sanchez and Son. Considering captain picks, it looks a good move.
On top of the above, Sanchez price could surge and his team and fixtures will no doubt be a logical choice.
The Caveat in all this is new players can slump in price. Is it possible to take on Bruno and Sancho, thus taking a drop with a rise at the same time?
New kids on the block such as Toney, Sarr, Mbeumo Are good but less likely to offer points performance. (Toney is a no no for me as there is an excellent chance he fails against Arsenal and a drop will ensue)
All the drivel above has not helped me one bit in making a decision. All I can say is England players, with Copa America players returning puts a damper on an early start. (Sancho is one of them)

I have my reservations, but that 2.5m saving by switching Bruno to Sancho is just too tempting to resist. It enables a Kane or a KDB and still have a decent squad.

    Foster : Ayling : Brownhill : Obafemi
