FPL team guide 2021/22 – Southampton: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Southampton.

For a ten round spell after Gameweek 6 the Saints camped in and around the European places in the league table, even reaching the very top briefly, but consecutive defeats against Leeds United, Leicester City and Arsenal sent them back to lower mid-table where they remained throughout the second half of the campaign, dropping to 15th on the final day.

Co-incidentally, 15th is where Southampton are ranked on our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1-6:

Can they outperform that fixture difficulty and make the same kind of start as last year?

The Main Man

Approaching a new season, especially after one where most of the wheels finished significantly loose if not actually detached, you’d hope that at least the chassis of the team would be in good shape. In the driving seat there is the reassuring figure of club captain James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m), the undisputed set-piece king of St Mary’s and a podium performer across the Premier League as a whole.

If he isn’t despatching a penalty or placing a dead-ball beyond any mortal goalkeeper’s reach he’s swinging in a threatening corner or laser-guiding a free-kick towards a gigantic centre-back.

Eight goals and seven assists combined with his record-breaking second consecutive ever-present season as a Premier-League midfielder reinforce why almost 10% of FPL managers currently have Ward-Prowse in their squads, but it’s at the sharp end of his pinpoint deliveries that Southampton’s problems begin to mount.

Picking Up The Set-Pieces

Both Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m) and Danny Ings (£8.0m) are out of contract next summer and openly reviewing their options during this pre-season. Vestergaard will at the very least be late back to training after reaching the EURO 2020 semi-finals with Denmark and last season his head was on the end of 20 of the Saints’ set-pieces, almost as many as the rest of the squad combined. Ings was third on that list with seven and utility defender Jack Stephens (£4.5m), also with only a year to go on his contract, was fourth.

Saints Preserve Us?

If Vestergaard, who made 30 league appearances in the last campaign, were to move on that would leave Jan Bednarek (£4.5m) partnered with either Stephens or comparative newcomer Mohammed Salisu (£4.5m) in the middle of a defence that produced comfortably the worst deficit (-14.6) between expected and actual goals conceded of any Premier League side in 2020/21.

I'm deadly set on this unless injuries occurred

    Sanchez, 4.0
    Robertson, Digne, Veltman, Ayling, 4.0
    Salah, Bruno, Son, Raphinha, Buendia
    Toney, Watkins, 4.5

Don’t like that front line. Way too much in midfield for .

Cant have them all. I choose strong midfielder rather than strong front line

Robbo to Taa, Buendia to Sarr? Veltman to Coady , Ayling to Fofana.

        That what I'm currently consider

Buendia > Sarr, Robbo > TAA or Veltman > Coufal

Fofana is risk and I dont rate much Coady

I might do Fofana to Coady and keep him in the bench. Gw3 onwards are good for them. Buendia to Sarr and Robbo to Taa.

              Stick to your guns.
Many will tell you to go with the likes of TAA cos they have him.in their team.
Also Buendia has great opening fixtures.

Thanks...At last someone has great perspective!

stick with what you believe in. Sooner or later I can see many will ditch TAA tbh.

            Excellent team, stick with it.

Robbo will probably get as many points as TAA. Buendia will definitely outscore Sarr and Fofana and Coady have awful points per game.

                Yep, excellent team.

As for saying you have too much in midfield, what does it matter where the points come from??

Sarr wasn't great in the prem last time around. My lads are Watford fans (the shame) and they'll tell you he isn't worth the money

Two problems I see. Toney fails, drops in price as everyone dumps him, you’re stuck with him. And your playing bench is only Ayling....Covid cancels/isolations still likely so one of 3 mids might need to be cut. Depends on your risk level. Ultimately good 11 if nowt goes awry

The only thing for me is the formation. You can get a playing 4.5 mid but not a 4.5 forward and having just 1 plying sub... in the current context is short IMO

    Schmichel

    Foster Fofana Holgate Obafemi

Solid that. Defense is a bit iffy and that bench could be a non starter one.

I like it....I'd probably prefer to downgrade Havertz and upgrade a defender to a 5.5 (like Digne or Shaw - or even 7.0 to Robbo) but my guess is you want to punt on Havertz which may well pay off big-time so fair enough.

I'd switch Fofana to a different 4.5 (like Ayling) as you already have a Leicester player in goals and he might not start if he switches back to 4 at the back.

For Southampton, Bertrand leaving is a big blow as is Ings not signing a new contract. Serious lack of depth behind the first team in the squad.

    McCarthy
    KWP Bednarek Vestergaard Perraud
    Walcott Romeu JWP Armstrong
    Adams Ings

    Forster
    Valery Stephens Salisu McQueen
    Djenepo Smallbone Diallo Elyounoussi
    Redmond Long

Backups: Lewis (GK), Tella (MF), Obafemi (FW)

Is there any sign of deals being done on signing players? The likes of Nathan Tella and Djenepo (fitness willing) are exciting options but they need some more reliability up front and across the back.

Very good, would switch Fofana for a 'nailed' 4.5m like White or Ayling personally but not really much in that.

      Midfield looks special....

The only think you might find is that you'd struggle to get on any bandwagon in midfield or up front - but that's sometimes an over played factor?

          Yeah, tis a good run.

The thought process that Wolves will be more attacking might end up making him less attractive as a pick, as he offers almost no goal threat...doesn't even go up for corners every time does he?

Haven't seen that double up.... would you be more tempted by Henderson at 5.0 in goals?

The double up could be a really interesting 'differential' - not seen it much.

Agreed, not seen it before but now looking at a back 3 of Robbo, Shaw, AWB.

Could be 500 points for only £18m. Like it

I'd be worried a bad game or two and Dave would be back in goal. I'd be more inclined to have Hendo if Dave was sold off.

An arguement for it for sure, not one I'd side with though... I think the last half of the season Shaw's underlying stats give him the potential to kick on to the next level this year.

Either way, not a lot between them though as you say, I just think Shaw has a higher potential upside this season and a home game against Leeds isn't make or break as I'm hoping (half expecting) Leeds to score anyway...

I'm actually sat with Shaw on the bench for GW1, although not set in stone of course.

Think what many fans forget is Pogba is a top class CM...selling him leaves another void even if we sign a specialist DM to fill that particular gap...then we're still lacking in CM. Hard to get it all sorted this window admittedly but I can dream 😉

There is a big difference between Pogba in an important game vs the rest of the time. Its not so much that he is poison, more that he only outs effort into half the games.

Use Lingard against the weaker teams and let Pogba build his ego for the big games

No way dude, he’s a liability - the amount of times he gives the ball away is criminal

He did it again in the EL final in the run up to Sevilla’s goal

Completely sick of his faffing about looking up & playing Hollywood balls, then losing possession, giving away penalties, handballs, silly stupid, unprofessional things, getting in the way…

Absolutely sick of him, can’t wait till he’s gone, let him go to a club who’ll indulge him, seriously, he’s a nightmare

can understand the frustration...preaching to the choir...but you have to look at it another way...with a specialist DM (which we haven't had since Carrick) behind him he could really kick on I reckon...like he has done in the French team. But let me be real, if we can sign a top class replacement, I'm all on for selling him...but that's much easier said than done!

He’s been given so many chances

And he’s obviously ridiculously talented - Ole’s first 15 games were as good an attacking midfield performance from him as any player ever

But it’s time to move on now, 4 years in, it hasn’t worked, sever ties, cut losses & move on

My hunch is the team, the squad, the dressing room will be so much stronger without him

It can be a win-win situation too - he doesn’t make much of a secret out of the fact that he’d be happier at a PSG, a Madrid, a Juve etc

hear that...as long as we can sign a top class DM plus a midfielder to replace him or Donny can step up...but I think he has a lot left to offer in the right formation...anyway Sancho & Varane (hopefully) look decent steps forward

I still don't see it myself. He has the odd moment but very rarely takes a game by the scruff of the neck which is what you need from an £80m player.

Bruno is a game changer, buy someone who can get the best out of him. A decent DM who can see a pass (Neves, Mountinho, Hojberg, JWP etc etc)

I would take Neves actually or a Jorginho (seeing how Italy fared this Summer)...and we sorely need a player like that who can connect the play! But for me that's a completely separate issue to Pogba.

Watkins will play every game (if fit).

Nacho may not with Barnes, Maddison and Bardy all available.

Aside from that they're pretty much like for like

    3. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 14 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

There’s no completion between them since Nacho got into the team he just wipes the floor with Watkins as an FPL asset

Now, in Watkins defence, he was nailed all season, and also didn’t have Grealish for about half of the games below

But still - if you compare them since Nacho broke into the Leicester team in GW26

      Nacho - 14 apps, 11G, 2A, 9.2 XGi, 116 minutes per XGi
      Watkins - 14 apps, 4G, 3A, 5.4 XGi, 232.7 minutes per XGi

Nacho all day & all night over Watkins imo

Plus Buendia offers reasonable Villa representation from midfield - Barnes & Maddison both have doubts over them

Hence Nacho Buendia is the combo for me

Watkins is a lovely, consistent performer in FPL (I owned him for 2/3 of the season)

But Nacho is proper, proper dynamite - an 11.5 in 7.5’s clothing so to speak

      Agree with MBP

My take on it is that Watkins properly compares to Jiminez. His record last season was very Jim like. Steady returns in a ll sorted of fixtures and barring a hattie in a freak game he was never very explosive.

Lots seem to be thinking of switching Watkins out in week 4 or so after this fixture run. Possibly wrong think there. He's a player you keep for value over a period of time as he consistently performs. Holding him till the bitter end last season despite fixtures was one of the few things I got right last time.

(Actually stuck between Jim and Watkins to start here)

      1. Andy_Social
        • 12 Years

Watkins has now got insane firepower to supply him. Jimi hasn't, with Neto still out, the midfield uncertain and Trincao untested. But GW1-3 should be enough to assess if Watkins needs keeping and/or Wolves are clicking.

        1. 7rjngs lollygagger
          • 5 Years

My guess is that Buendia is being a tad overrated and that bizarrely Pep will also simply add to his midfield left wing arsenal and end up with Grealish not Kane.

Jim is naturally a punt if I go there but he's a nice punt to be on - historically perfect really. Strategy wise I intend to hold one 7.5 long and if you look at fixtures over the first run and not just the first 3 then Wolves are easily the equal of Villa. What I won't be doing unless in extremis is switching between 7.5s for fixtures. Plump and stick.

There might be am minor exception to this when I WC in week 4 of course but that's another question.

Was Tuchel a rotation freak before he got to Chelsea?

Is it in his nature or more a function of the Chelsea squad and the options it offers? Getting tempted by James/Chilwell. Fixtures less than ideal of course but a couple of cs in the early red fixtures would appear quite feasible.

That was what was on my mind.

He came in at the stage when the season got really cluttered in a season like no other. Given a preseason and a relatively relaxed early schedule might be just half possibly be semi reliable?

Pondering if Chilwell at 6.0 might be the player everyone takes Shaw to be. 5.5 and above and you need cs for great value and more and I'd back Chelsea every time over United there.

Logically this is a week 7 issue I guess.

        1. Gunneryank

Pondering the exact same thing. I've wanted Chilwell since my first draft and haven't found a way to make it work just yet.

    2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 4 Years

He's always been one to look at each individual opponent and set up his team to outdo them as opposed to simply setting up his team one specific way and expecting them to beat any team, so there's that aspect to rotation he's generally displayed. I imagine last season was a bit more of an outlier with the regularity of games though which added to the number of changes made but at the same time as you say, the options he has at Chelsea were quite vast when you think about it. I've honestly been very tempted by Chilwell myself, I don't think I'll be able to fit him in but he's in a tight defence and is so consistent going forward, with the team being more settled after last year and players like Havertz improving and the possibility of someone like Haaland joining his goal involvements could improve even further

I started with DCL but now I'm off him. 8m for a striker playing under Benitez and his defense first mentality? I can't do it. 7.5 options for me. Or you could punt on Toney and then you have the cash. Much riskier though for sure.

Yeh, the great fixture turn. But then I realised the transfer window closes after GW3. I can see some high-profile transfers going to the wire. I will want Kane and Haaland/Lewandowski/whoever goes to Chelsea, which will require radical restructuring only a wildcard can manage. I figure on giving last-minute transfers a game or two to bed in before I play it.

You could get one with 2FT, but you couldn't get 2 premium strikers without a heck of a lot of hits. Mind you, with patience, you'd get Kane first and wait until GW7 for the Chelsea one. But then there's Grealish ....

      In my opinion....

      Son is worth 0.5m more

Grealish is a better pick for 1.5m less

and.... Bruno is a safer pick to start for 2.5m more with it being a very easy move to Sancho is he starts as well as some are anticipating.

He's in plenty that I've seen though to be fair?

Sancho is prob going to be a place holder for Son once fixtures turn. But yeah if Grealish starts he could be better, given Villa’s fixtures. Just feel United will score a lot of goals this season, now with Sancho creating.

I'd be a little wary of Bowen, he's probably fine if Lingard doesn't join but I had him for a few weeks at the end of last season and he was very inconsistent for gametime. Like it otherwise though

Will he play with Barnes fit again & reverting to just one up top i.e. Vardy?

Also Thomas done well last year when he came in so will he start the season ahead of Bertrand at LB / LWB?

Yeah didn't he go between midfield, RB and RW? Even after Lingard joined he had a number of games where he drifted wide for the majority of the match to free space for Lingard to run into

    Sanchez
    Castagne Dunk Fofana
    Salah(C) Son Sancho Buendia
    Iheanacho Wilson Watkins

Sancho > Mahrez on the cards for GW 2 potentially.

With no Wijnaldum or Van Dijk (for the start of the season) I’ll give it a miss. He was priced 7.5 when Liverpool were at the peak of their powers. They most definitely aren’t now.

I'd be surprised if Sancho ended up better value (points per million) than Trent this season.

Average of 185 points over the last 3 seasons...sets a pretty high bar.

Yeah I know, but I can’t stand discussions like this I won’t lie. I’m not keeping Sancho all season and I’m not not having Trent all season. I usually Wildcard early so we shall see. I just think there’s more uncertainly around Pool defence than ever before.

Yeah I have heard this. Sometimes attack is the best form of defence. If I go Wolves double it’s out of me taking a risk rather than a set of informed decisions that got me there.

    Better combo?

    A) Barnes/Maddison & Toney

Think B might be the smart play and I'd consider Mbeumo and 0.5 itb over Sarr personally.

Really keen on Barnes here but may hold off until he starts returning. Three issues. One is being nailed. Two is how he recovers from his double op - may take time to get up to speed. Three is that he has been streaky in the past and is perhaps a player to jump on rather than start with.

Is he as nailed as he was?

Not beyond the realms of possibility that his minutes do begin to get managed more, and they could take him off each game now?

I know that hasn't really happened yet, but it will.

10.5m a lot to risk that, especially when Nacho is 3.0m less and he's such good relative value?

Auba is really interesting....not really on the radar as he was so underwhelming but you never know by GW4... although, I think I know.

Check how many goals he has scored from open play in his last 50 matches.

Huuuuge fan of his and would love him to come good but last season was about a glut of early pens followed by assists late on when he was slightly wider when Nacho came in. Number of returns misleading as forwards need goals for baps and value

Frighteningly he didn't score a single goal last season that wasn't a big chance.

He didn't look awful when I saw him and I hope you're right but the stats have been really really horrid for non pen goals and missed chances for quite a time - going back into the 2019/20 season.

But all in all why pay for Vardy if you can have Nacho? Happily captained him last season and would do so again this time. Like MBP I really can't see Rodgers not playing Nacho.

I seem to be torn between Robbo or one of the similarly priced forwards (I already have TAA and currently 3 6.5m-8m forwards), logic tells me it should be obvious and go for proven high points for the price. I guess you get better bench player by going with the forward though..

I've got Salah and TAA, and am deciding between Robbo and Jota. I'm inclined to decide that if VVD starts, I'll start Robbo; if VVD isn't fit for GW1 it's Jota. This is just until my wildcard.

I have Salah and TTA too, I’m quite happy with the 6.5 mids but I’m also eyeing Jota. If it looks like he’ll be starting then I think it’s an easy option to go to the lower end of the mid priced forwards and still feel happy with the team.
