With just under two weeks to go until the 2021/22 Fantasy Bundesliga season kicks off, our series of preview articles gets underway with a look at the best goalkeepers from the German top flight.

If you’re new to the game or just need a reminder of the rules, check out our ‘how to play’ guide below.

Most of the league’s biggest teams have seen managerial changes over the summer, with seven of last season’s top eight – except for surprise package Union Berlin – now under new management. This means we can expect some inevitable tactical changes and surprises.

It was recently announced that this season will have five unlimited transfers, or Wildcard periods, with the first arriving on August 29th, which follows Matchday 3 and precedes the first international break of the campaign.

This means we’ll only be looking at the opening three fixtures in this article, in an attempt to maximise points from the get-go.

Sign up to Fantasy Bundesliga and pick a team here

HOW GOALKEEPERS SCORE POINTS

Goalkeeper scoring in Fantasy Bundesliga is different to Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

For starters, goalkeepers only receive three points for a clean sheet, which is as many as they gain for just two in-game stops or a penalty save.

They also lose one point for every goal conceded, four for an own goal and two for conceding a penalty.

Like all other players, they gain one point for being on the winning side and lose one if their team suffers defeat.

The focus on save points means that Fantasy Bundesliga heavily favours budget goalkeepers.

Given that starting prices range from Manuel Neuer at 12.0m to newly promoted Manuel Riemann and Sascha Burchert at 5.0m, there’s a huge amount of saving that can be done across the two goalkeeper spots in your squad.

Last season’s top scorer was Arminia Bielefeld’s Stefan Ortega (8.0m), whose 234 points was nearly fifty higher than Neuer’s 186, despite Ortega finishing the season at nearly half the price of the Bayern Munich man (7.5m vs 14.3m).

Fixtures don’t matter as much for goalkeepers in this game, as a 2-0 loss can still mean big points if they have made multiple saves. However, losing by three or more goals costs all players two points.

THE GOALKEEPERS UP FOR CONSIDERATION

As discussed above, budget goalkeepers are the way to go in Fantasy Bundesliga.

With that in mind, we’ve highlighted some potential picks, with the most expensive being Ortega and Florian Müller, who will both cost you 8.0m.

The biggest issue with these goalkeepers is that, as most of them play for smaller teams, they tend to all feature in the 3:30 CEST slot on a Saturday afternoon, meaning you can only start one of them.

As a result, it could make sense to set up your goalkeepers like FPL, with one playing and one permanently on the bench, or structure your decisions around the few options with two or three games at different times across the first three Matchdays.

The three best goalkeepers to own to maximise the number of games you cover are Hertha Berlin’s Alexander Schwolow (7.0m), Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann (7.0m) and Union Berlin’s Andreas Luthe (6.0m), as these tend not to play in the 3:30pm slot, the German equivalent of the 3pm kickoff.

The best goalkeepers for Fantasy Bundesliga 2021/22 2

Luthe looks like the best option here.

The cheapest of the three, and also the highest scorer from last season (158 points), the 34-year-old is one of the key pieces in Union’s defence which conceded the fourth least goals in last season’s Bundesliga.

Luthe can be put in two possible 12.0m combinations, with Mainz’s Robin Zentner (6.0m) and Köln’s Timo Horn (6.0m).

Zentner has the better fixtures of the two, facing newly promoted Bochum and Greuther Fürth in Matchday 2 and 3 respectively as part of Bo Svensson’s resurgent Mainz side.

If you want to pick a goalkeeper combination for the opening three Matchdays, Luthe and Zentner present very attractive options, with plenty of chances for them to score big.

However, if you want to run with just one starter, then look no further than the three highest scoring goalkeepers from last season.

The best goalkeepers for Fantasy Bundesliga 2021/22 4

Ortega, Rafal Gikiewicz (7.0m) and Müller scored 234, 200 and 189 points respectively in 2020/21. They had the top three most saves and highest save percentages in the league between them, which suggests it pays to get behind an average-to-poor defence as a goalkeeper in Fantasy Bundesliga.

They all have middling fixtures to start the season.

Gikiewicz’s Augsburg are facing Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen sides who will still be bedding in under new management, alongside a very up and down Hoffenheim side.

Müller and Ortega have similar fixtures, as VfB Stuttgart and Bielefeld are the first two sides to face newly promoted Fürth, who have had some of their key players sold since they’ve come up to the top tier.

Although Fürth were the second highest scorers in the 2. Bundesliga last season, they’ve lost key creator David Raum (9.0m) to Hoffenheim and strikers Branimir Hrgota (6.0m) and Havard Nielsen (6.0m) have failed to impress in previous stints in Germany’s top tier.

Ortega and Müller also both face Freiburg, while games against Frankfurt and RB Leipzig respectively are the biggest hurdle for those going with just one goalkeeper to face, although they could both be prime fixtures to garner plenty of save points.

The best goalkeepers for Fantasy Bundesliga 2021/22 3

This brings us to our last two options as Fantasy Bundesliga goalkeepers.

Riemann and Burchert are the starting goalkeepers from the two newly promoted sides, Bochum and Fürth. Having conceded 39 and 44 goals respectively last season, they are behind weaker defences than Ortega was when Bielefeld were promoted in 2019/20 (30 goals conceded).

However, they will undoubtedly face a huge amount of shots in the Bundesliga and this will inevitably mean saves. For their bargain prices as the cheapest starting goalkeepers in the game, you could pick a lot worse than these two, with Riemann especially known as a leader for Bochum, producing plenty of incredible and crucial saves for Die Unabsteigbaren last season.

Both sides have relatively easy opening fixtures and could be great early picks to save some funds and still score big.

I've got one for you, question! Which is the smartest way to start FPL.

        1) Picking price points in order to give you the flexibility to chase early bandwagons?

        2) setting your team up with an eye on fixtures for a certain period of time until your planned wildcard?

    Got a defence of
    TAA l Digne l Shaw l Ayling l white/verltman
    A) stick
    B) Shaw > 4.0 and play one of Ay or Velt/white

Possibly Barnes > havert or Sanchez > meslier (and go with white + veltman) might want 2 Leeds attackers

It’s Sanchez, likely going white over veltman
Forgot to mention I’m playing 3ATB. Last sub is obafemi so unlikely to get a 4.0 defender

Tinkered with my team and now I'm not sure if I preferred the first version or not!

    Option 1):
    Sanchez Foster
    TAA Digne Veltman Fofana Coady
    Salah Bruno Raphina Buendia ESR
    Watkins DCL Toney

    Option 2):
    Sanchez Foster
    TAA Digne Coufal Fofana Coady
    Salah Bruno Raphina Buendia Bissouma
    Watkins Antonio Nacho

    So essentially: Veltman/ESR/DCL/Toney vs Coufal/Bissouma/Antonio/Nacho

A case for Meslier and the Leeds defence.

Leeds conceded 34 in the first half of last season (from an xGc 31.59) with a delta of +2.41 (i.e. they conceded 2.4 goals more than they would have been expected too)

Leeds conceded 20 in the second half of last season (from an xGC 27.12) delta of -7.12 (i.e. they conceded 7.1 goals fewer than they would have been expected too)

This change of xGC delta (-9.53) from the first of half of the season to the second was the best recorded of any side last season and the xGC figure of -7.12 for the second half of the season was also the greatest for any team during either half of last season.

Meslier also racked up saves at one save per 22.3 minutes (second only to Johnstone of GKs to have played significant minutes) and on the 11 occasions he kept a clean sheet he received the max BPS bonus on 5 occasions.

He missed three games last season. One due to illness and two at the end of the season to give the outgoing Casilla some gametime. Had he played in these he most probably would have tipped around 165 points. At 5.0 I think he will be the pick of the GKs in terms of points and quite possibly value and will be in my team from GW1.

It's my first time posting something like this so let me know your thoughts. Still haven't fully gotten to grips with how to use xG and xGc.

    Cheers.

An absolute steal. I ran a value comparison - and he is pretty much even with Martinez at the top. He will likely be my keeper going forward once I WC. Going with Sanchez to begin with, but will get Meslier for the fixture swing

I put the poor record in the first half of the season down to centre backs out with injuries. I believe right now there are injury concerns in the same area. If the first choice back line is fit, I'll start Meslier. If there are gaps, I'll wait until I WC to bring him in as a season 'keeper'.

        Ayling Cooper Llorente Firpo

I'm fairly certain their defensive numbers improved a lot once Llorente came in. Providing he recovers from his niggle i think I'd prefer him over Ayling, bit of a differential.

Only considering Sanchez or meslier. With a WC gw7 likely I will go with Sanchez and ayling

Ayling is a funny one, had some promising stats in 19/20 in the Championship (4 goals and 5 assists) and looked to be getting into some good positions last season but failed to deliver a single attacking return.

I think he was just very unlucky (whereas Dallas was very lucky).

So they went from an xGc 31.59 to 27.12? Doesn't seem that much different, maybe they just got luckier in the second half re:goals conceded? Still obviously a nice pick, will Kalvin Phillips play the first couple?

      1. Miguel Sanchez
        • 9 Years

I guess when you put it like that it doesn't sound to big an improvement.

Not sure on Kalvin Phillips to be honest. Bielsa is usually pretty transparent in pressers so hopefully he gives us some clues.

But, on the other hand xGC delta (for the second part of the season) indicates that Mesiler is good goalkeeper, and will make saves. It is difficult though, because you have a 4.5 goalkeeper from the side that had great xGC for the same period.

    Friends, please:

    A, 4-4-2:
    Meslier (4.0)
TAA / Shaw / Digne / Coufal (White)
Salah / Bruno / Raphinha / Buendía (Brownhill)
    Bamford  / Watkins (4.5)
    £1 in the bank

    Meslier (4.0)

I think you might want to check which flank Pulisic started on vs. Arsenal.

Pulisic started as a right wing-back with Callum Hudson-Odoi starting on the left.

"He played there with me at Dortmund and we played many times like this with Callum. Marcos wasn't able to play today so we put Callum on the left side, which I wanted to see from a long time. Callum can maybe be more dangerous from this position coming inside which he loves, and which he did today. So you know our situation."

"We have Azpi and Reece for this position [right wing-back] but Azpi only started two days ago and Reece hasn't even started yet. So we need solutions because we start on the 11th against Villarreal and on the 14th is the season. We can't try things then so now is the time to see. It was the possibility to give him some minutes and from here we go on."

Pulisic has mostly played as a left winger for us & to be honest, based on the fact James/Azpi were out - you could have fully expected to see CHO on the right as before with a Pulisic on the standard left. However, Tuchel flipped it.

I very much doubt Pulisic will be playing RWB very much, but this does tell us he has been considering CHO as a LWB option at times.

Pulisic could start there, but it potentially means CHO could too.

So yeah - Chilwell is first choice but you need to keep an eye on what Tuchel fancies doing...

Downgrade Toney to 4.5 forward, invest in 5th mid (ESR, Harrison, Benrahma or Sarr) and use the 0.5 or 1 million left to upgrade Ayling to Tierney or Regulion or some other 5.0 /5.5 defender.

I did pick a combo, A and B, use the 1.0 elsewhere .... Antonio to Toney is a good one, easy to get Toney in if he scores early..... or a 4.5m mid to Digne or Shaw or Stones or something like that...

James Maddison appears to have agreed personal terms with Arsenal.
Both clubs just have to agree on a sale price and Maddison is an Arsenal player.
7M for someone playing alongside Auba, Pepe and Laca could be good value.

He's a notoriously streaky player and can wait until he hits form.

Also never mind how much Arsenal pay he won't be nailed imo with ESR around. Precedent here with Pepe who cost the earth - only made 20 odd starts in his debut season.

If Maddison does sign I think I'll actually get Pepe as he was on form and will be playing with ESR or Maddison rather than having zero creative presence like the start of last season.

    Hi

I have the following draft midfield

    Buendia | Salah | Raph | Mahrez | Sancho

I am not sure if it is best just to start with Bruno and it will make downgrading if need be much easier (after assessing certain players etc) and also upgrade to Kane if he moves to City, does that make sense? Sorry if it does not!

    Appreciate your comments.

    Thanks

That is the reason I'm starting with Bruno - easy 2 transfers to get Kane in as and when he moves and starts performing.

By spreading the funds i.e. with no 2 x £12.0m players the move is that much harder and would potentially require a wild card

      1. UnluckyXI

My plan is to drop Mahrez & DCL right now for Kane and likely Bissouma.

Confident I've got enough playing minutes across my subs to make up for the loss in the short-term

      It makes sense

Currently set up with Bruno on those grounds - but it is a remarkably defensive play when you consider his price point. He is over a quarter of the cash you have to spend in real terms.

There's no rush to get Kane from his first week at City if it happens - could well be a cameo off the bench.
