Can Varane boost the clean sheet prospects of Shaw and Man Utd’s FPL defenders?

Raphael Varane (£5.5m) has completed a £43m move to Manchester United, continuing an exciting summer for the Old Trafford faithful.

The France international has spent ten years at Real Madrid, who reluctantly agreed to sell the 28-year-old as he entered the final year of his contract.

Should the transfer be completed smoothly, Varane will join Jadon Sancho (£9.5m) in the new signings lounge, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side look to mount a serious, sustained title challenge.

VARANE’S HISTORY

The Frenchman was born in Lille but came through the ranks at RC Lens, making his debut aged just 17. By the end of his first season, Varane was being chased by Europe’s leading sides. Sir Alex Ferguson thought he had secured the centre-back’s signature until a late phone call from Zinedine Zidane persuaded Varane to instead head to Madrid.

His trophy-laden decade at Los Blancos saw him win three La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey, four Champions Leagues, three UEFA Super Cups, three Supercopa de Espana titles and four FIFA Club World Cups. He also found time to win the World Cup with France in 2018.

Now at the peak age for a centre back, Varane arrives in England with a thirst for trophies and a desire to start a new chapter in his career.

“He’s a proven winner and a player we’ve followed for many, many years. I know Sir Alex was very, very close to signing him and this time around we’ve got him at the other end of his career. He’s proved over his whole career what a good person he is, first of all. [He’s a] professional and he’s won all there is to win.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

WHAT VARANE WILL BRING TO UNITED

Solskjaer will be disappointed with how Manchester United’s defence ended the 2020/21 campaign. One clean sheet from the final nine league matches saw them finish with 44 goals conceded, the worst amongst the top four and a tally higher than Arsenal. Brighton in 16th only let in two more, meanwhile.

An average of 11.3 shots per game conceded was bettered by six teams, with United in sixth for fewest big chances conceded.

A total of 13 clean sheets was a respectable tally, nevertheless, and what was notable was that almost half of their shut-outs came in games against the ‘big six’.

Should the composed Varane be able to help cut out the slackness and lapses in concentration against the also-rans of the division (United conceded to every team in the division ranked fifth or below), then that clean sheet count could be boosted further.

Part of the problem was set pieces. The Red Devils committed 454 fouls – the league’s third highest – and conceded 14 times from penalties, corners or free-kicks.

In Varane, they are adding a pacy defender who is calm under pressure and strong in the air.

A total of 360 appearances for Real Madrid in all competitions brought 113 clean sheets and 17 goals, with the Frenchman being yellow carded on only 27 occasions; Varane was seen as the anti-Sergio Ramos and complemented the Spaniard well.

“When I was little they said I didn’t have the mentality to triumph. I was nice, not enough of a bad guy. My style doesn’t make you think I’m a warrior. Anticipation is the key: you don’t have to touch an opponent to take the ball. I try not to go to ground.” – Raphael Varane

Fans of the Red Devils will hope he has a similar connection with Harry Maguire (£5.5m), who adds the blood and thunder to their backline but needs a partnership that he didn’t quite get with Victor Lindelof (£5.0m) or Eric Bailly (£5.0m).

IS VARANE A GOAL THREAT?

Alongside his 17 goals for Real Madrid, Varane has scored five times in 79 France appearances. Standing at 6ft 3in tall, he won the highest percentage of aerial duels amongst 2020/21 La Liga defenders (minimum of 1,000 minutes played) and had a 90% pass completion rate.

Nine of his 17 goals were headers from a corner or free-kick, with a further six being close-range tap-ins whilst forward for a set piece.

With Maguire the usual target for the corners of Luke Shaw (£5.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m), Varane adds a second option; although the fact that he hasn’t once scored more than two league goals in a single season should provide some perspective.

PlayerMinutes per chance in 2020/21
Maguire84.7
Varane159.8

Solskjaer has attempted to fix the set-piece deficiencies by recently hiring Eric Ramsay as their first ever specialist coach in this area, mostly focused on defence but there should be benefits at both ends of the field.

A NEW PLAYING STYLE?

The addition of Ramsay could help boost United’s clean sheet potential at the back and, if rumours are to be believed, Varane now gives Solskjaer the confidence to play with a more attacking midfield.

Previously, the back four would be protected by two defensive midfielders – a combination of Scott McTominay (£5.5m), Nemanja Matic (£4.5m), Fred (£5m) and Paul Pogba (£7.5m). Now, he may play just one and proceed with a second creative talent alongside Fernandes. Whether that is Donny van de Beek (£6.0m), a freed Pogba or a new signing such as Saul Niguez remains to be seen.

“With him in, we’ve got different ways of playing of course, and I can see different ways of playing with Raphael. I can’t wait to get him in and hopefully we can get that sorted as soon as.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

FINAL THOUGHTS

Varane’s role in FPL may be less of that a target and more of a facilitator, improving the Fantasy prospects of Maguire, Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.5m) – all of whom seem to offer more attacking threat – on the clean sheet front.

United began the 2021/22 season by hosting Leeds United, which preceded trips to Southampton and Wolves precede Newcastle United (H), West Ham United (a), Aston Villa (H), Everton (H) and Leicester City (a).

The equivalent eight matches of last season brought no clean sheets and 13 goals conceded but it’s still a mostly favourable run, on paper at least.

Varane missed Gameweek 1 thanks to visa issues, while Shaw, Wan-Bissaka and Maguire have all had disrupted pre-seasons to some extent.

It may take a little time for the United backline to click into gear, then, with last season’s slow start still fresh in the mind.

Thereafter, though, hopes are high for improvements on what we saw in 2021/22.

FPLMarc Newcastle fan that spends far too much time thinking about FPL.

That Norwich lineup… many of the starting 11 have covid.

Pukki, Hanley, Rashica to name a few. Hopefully they are back quickly.

I’ve got a RMT - I want help because it’s so boring but I don’t know where to change:

    Sanchez - 4.0

    TAA - Shaw - White - (Veltman) - (Fofana)

    Salah - Fernandes - Greenwood - Buendia - (4.5)

    DCL - Antonio - Toney.

How can I mix it up a bit to get away from the template?

      Havertz in?

Not personally convinced that those fixtures are that red really. Week 1 he has the best home fixture against a team with a new defence playing a new system which is going to be high risk. I'd go with him over Greenwood who is very dodgy for minutes

You could just put DC into midfield. James is sounding disillusioned with Everton and with no Siggy either then he may not be that great an option.

Alli could be a tempter if there is no Kane. 6.5 is very cheap and after week 1 fixtures are fine and there is the no Mou honeymoon period.

      DCL + Greenwood + Buendia+ 4.5 mid to Havertz + Alli + Barnes + 4.5 forward

      I think it'd be B for me.
But I'm really not sure about your FWD lineup.
Kane; at a stand-off. Unlikely to make GW1, and if Levy doesn't back down - could be a fair bit worse.
Pukki; still not ready to play (not in the lineup for tonight's friendly as he's 'recovering from isolation)
4.5; there are zero mins available there.

          Yeah - structure makes sense.
And whilst I don't have Kane in my preferred draft, I have looked at 'potential ways to retrofit him in'!

I liked Pukki last time around too, but missing most (/all?) of pre-season through isolation coupled with those first 4 fixtures straight off the bat have kept him very much in the 'wait and see' camp for me.

Yeah - could result in me finding 0.5 to get Toney in. Or who knows maybe Josh King punt!
Either way I’m pretty dead set on Kane, max 6.5, 4.5 fodder

I think Toney will be worth the extra £0.5m over King.
Not sure he'll have much to bring to the party this season.

I'm playing around with a few drafts - one is a 3x Prem draft is pretty similar to your 'B' with the frontline of Kane/Toney/4.5 as it stands.
I don't think it'll win out - as I don't think we'll see Kane in GW 1 or 2 (outside chance of missing for 3 too if this standoff continues), but as I said, I do have half an eye on how I'd get there!

Who is week 1 captain in A? Bruno?

I'd go C of that lot but with Havertz over Sancho - he has an amazing fixture really and is OOP. Palace defence is very likely the one to attack early on - players who have barely met each other, new system, and a system that is high risk. Don't think he'll struggle that much against Arsenal either.

It is likely Kane v Levy saga will run to end of transfer window and you could lose a lot of ground with 12.5 on your bench relying on Pukki when Norwich have awful fixtures and have players affected by COVID). B is least worse option but honestly I would get 3 mid priced strikers to start season and switch from Bruno/mid priced striker to Kane and 4.5 m striker once transfer stand off resolved

Already have Raphinha and am wondering why Jarrod Bowen seems to be getting no love for GW 1-4. Is it the uncertainty coming from rumored interest from Liverpool?

In the long term, a Raphinha-Harrison double doesn't scare me; but right now I have the extra 0.5 lying around and those early Leeds fixtures aren't screaming out "double up" to me.

I suppose I could surrender to groupthink and go with Buendia, but then I have to confront the notion that I'm paying for members tools and then ignoring what they are telling me.

Four weeks is a small enough sample to be comfortable with the idea that anything can happen (planned transfer to Harrison GW5), and the site projections and fixtures suggest that Bowen isn't a *bad* pick at the very least.

I'm just making sure that I haven't missed something in the news that should steer me away from a player who has a lower ownership percentage than Gylfi Sigurdsson (just to pick a random name).

most definitely for weeks 1-4. I have plans for that slot for week 7 when I transition out of Liverpool and into Chelsea, but right now I'm just looking at how I might cobble maximum productivity out of the 6.5 slot for the first six weeks.

    Jota or Antonio?

I have 7.5m. Jota is really appealing. He has good fixtures and great underlying stats. I think he's got higher ceiling but also lower floor. Antonio will likely tick over. Antonio also offers more flexibility to jump on an emerging forward like Daka or Pukki.

Barring injuries at Liverpool, Antonio. It also parks that 7.5 in a slot where's there seems to be a ton of flexibility . . . makes it easy to onboard Nacho if he gets regular run.

I don't know about you, but I don't see a ton of choices that I really love at the 7-7.5 range at MF the way I do at forward. I really like Mason Mount, but he's just not an option for the first couple game weeks on top of the fact that Chelsea's early fixture list is, um, challenging.

The other MF options floating around players I like at that price point seem to have question marks over them regarding return from injury (Harvey Barnes) or playing time (Jota). The projection tools suggest James Rodriguez as an option, but even a cursory glance at news coming out of Everton should pretty much eliminate that as a choice.

The 7.5 choices at F seem rather abundant and provide opportunity to make meaningful changes with a single transfer. I'll fix the MF question once the Liverpool run of fixtures ends by going Robbo/6.5M to either Reece James or Rudiger/Mason Mount. The tools tell me that's not a terrible idea.

I actually do see value in MF.

Jota, Mount, Ziyech, Pepe, Maddison, Torres. One of them can absolutely become a very strong differential.

Jota (playing time), Mount (fixtures, questions about weeks 1-2 due to late return), Ziyech (Chelsea looking to move him?), Pepe (hadn't thought about Arsenal, maybe), Maddison (is he staying?), Torres (Pep Roulette with five chambers filled).

I suppose you could do the same thing with Watkins, Antonio, Callum Wilson, Jimi; but somehow those feel safer to me. Don't know if that's rational or not, it's just what my spider sense is telling me today.

I think I'll just hide under my Robbo/Bowen et. al. blanket until the Chelsea bad run of fixtures is over when I can switch to the Chelsea 5.5D/Mount combo that I really wanted in the first place.

I really don't like double Liverpool defense. They haven't shown enough to justify it. The fixtures are good but they're only good on paper. Often times, we misjudge how good teams are. Last season, we saw Sheffield United away on the ticket and thought, tough game, no goals etc.

Liverpool's defense has not been good enough for a season and a half now. 7.0m Robbo is very unappealing when you can use it go for a strong differential in midfield like Mahrez.

I like Barnes. Just not sure I'm confident in him coming straight out of the gate GW1. Like I said, there's just a bunch of clouds over a lot of those 7.5-ish midfielders that are making me feel risk averse.

            Fair dos

As it happens I've gone cold on Barnes who was one of my early picks. He's been very streaky in the past and I've now relegated to the category of buy as soon as he scores!

We may be coming at this from different angles but I'm looking early on to have one spot in a forward area where I'm going to roll the dice a bit.

Stats say otherwise. Jota in the last 6 matches has played fewer minutes but has higher xG, higher xA, more shots, more shots in the box.

He's simply outdoing Antonio over the last 6 games that they both played in terms of stats.

One problem with recent Liverpool stats - this affects TAA too - is that Liverpool had a simply amazing fixture run and were playing teams either relegated or with nothing to play for. Not a unique set of circs but different to early season

I'm going to guess thought that season stats show much the same picture - perhaps with a slight spike for Antonio when he was alongside Lingz

Depends a bit on set up to me.

Jota is surely a starter in week 1 anyway given Firmino and there are a number of possibles in midfield to jump on from him - including the WH mids. Don't see that Antonio is necessarily more flexible there.

As an initial 2 week play think I'd more likely go Jota backing the chances of a mid priced mid emerging over a cheap forward.

But depends on set up and where you see your likely transfers really.

        It's purely 3-5-2 vs 3-4-3.

I get Brownhill over Obafemi in 3-4-3 but that's such a tiny bonus I basically don't consider it.

If you already have two mid priced strikers then I'd go mid personally - you already have flexibility up top no? Add a third midpriced type there and you are committing fairly heavily to a price point in one area perhaps.

Not really. Because 2 striker slots can be hard to fix. If Watkins starts well and Toney doesn't I can't really switch for a Daka or Antonio.

Fair enough if you have Toney then already - this is a decent point. There is a risk in starting with two up top if one is Toney.

In practical terms - speaking personally - Toney is going to be there for 3/4 weeks almost come what may and so fixing him is a down the line issue where I may well have cash itb.

Really interesting chat here. I think a lot of it depends on how much that phrase "if he starts" weighs on your mind. If I find myself thinking that about a player, that's generally enough to make me want to look elsewhere. I am super risk-averse about playing time at the beginning of the season, which I suppose is the right move when you are spending 18.0 on your four bench slots.

Even if Jota doesn't start (and if he does, who in that trio gets dropped?!) I think he plays part of every game when fit. And that's good enough for me at that price. Pool should be much improved with the fans back, they should be very attacking

I have absolutely 0 interest in Vardy. He's getting on, he has extra strike competition, and he isn't coming off the back of a particularly great season either.

10.5m is very overpriced as well. If he was 9.5m maybe.

James sounding discontented and angling for a move is good for Digne perhaps but poor for DCL especially with no Siggy. Also slightly doubt the away fixtures for Everton early on - not sure they are so good as they seem.

I was being persuaded earlier on that James (Chelsea) over Chilwell was a false economy.

That bench is really light. Think Brownhill is the one to be on. Gets forward and shoots a good deal.

              A. Bachmann + 0.5m (could use it to upgrade one of my 7.5m fwds to DCL or Bamford in GW4ish)
              or
              B. Pickford

I think I will keep changing until the deadline. Got Buendia and Watkins playing vs Bachmann in GW1, which puts me off him.

Yet with Sanchez maybe injured what is your alternative 4.5m keeper..... ?

I have Buendia and Watkins too and had the same issue with bachman so decided to bite the bullet and have gone for Meslier as a set and forget for the season. Hoping Man Utd's non existant preseason for their senior players will hamstring them in week one.

Werner to bang in 20 goals this season surely?

If he starts putting them in, then sure!

Doubt it, no pens, plays on the wing, and Chelsea are actively trying to buy a striker

Yeah surely, all signs point to that.

                  Plays wide.
                  Low confidence.
                  Poor finisher.
                  Rotation risk.
                  Rubbish.

28 goals season before for Leipzig in the league, would be naieve to base him solely off of last season

I think there's too much talent elsewhere in the team. I think Havertz is the one.
Werner should play lots and tick along though

                A) Son + 5.5 forward on bench
                B) Greenwood + 7.5 forward on field
