FPL player availability in Gameweek 4 still uncertain despite clubs’ red-list stance

Premier League clubs announced on Tuesday evening that they have decided not to release players for international matches played in red-list countries in the September break.

That’s something that, of course, affects Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

Previously we discussed the worst-case scenario, highlighting the players who would be at risk of missing Gameweeks 4 and 5 (and potentially others after future international breaks) as a result of their upcoming involvement for their home nations.

These FPL assets included Mohamed Salah (£12.6m), Raphinha (£6.5m) and Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m).

Yesterday’s announcement from 20 top-flight teams seemingly quells fears on that front but this is surely not the last we’ll hear on the issue.

And, in a further, as-yet-unconfirmed twist, the Athletic report that…

Players would be banned from playing for their clubs for the international window, which runs until September 9, plus a further five days.

This would exclude them from the games on the weekend of September 11 and 12.

They would also risk further disciplinary action from FIFA.

The Premier League clubs also protested against FIFA’s decision to extend the international window in South America by two days in September and October, which would mean a belated return ahead of Gameweeks 4 and 8 for a number of key FPL players representing Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile and Paraguay – if they are allowed to make the trip, of course.

Tuesday’s statement read as follows:

Premier League clubs have today reluctantly but unanimously decided not to release players for international matches played in red-list countries next month.

The clubs’ decision, which is strongly supported by the Premier League, will apply to nearly 60 players from 19 Premier League clubs who are due to travel to 26 red-list countries in the September international window.

This follows FIFA’s current position not to extend its temporary release exception for players required to quarantine on their return from international duty.

Extensive discussions have taken place with both The FA and the Government to find a solution, but due to ongoing public health concerns relating to incoming travellers from red-list countries, no exemption has been granted.

If required to quarantine on return from red list countries, not only would players’ welfare and fitness be significantly impacted, but they would also be unavailable to prepare for and play in two Premier League match rounds, a UEFA club competition matchday and the third round of the EFL Cup.

This period takes into consideration 10 days of hotel quarantine on return to England but does not include any additional time that would be required for players to regain match fitness.

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said: “Premier League clubs have always supported their players’ desires to represent their countries – this is a matter of pride for all concerned. However, clubs have reluctantly but rightly come to the conclusion that it would be entirely unreasonable to release players under these new circumstances.

“Quarantine requirements mean that players’ welfare and fitness will be significantly impacted. We understand the challenges that exist in the international match calendar and remain open to workable solutions.”

Clubs also discussed their dissatisfaction with FIFA’s decision to extend CONMEBOL’s international window by two days in September and October from nine to 11 days.

This places additional international obligations on players from that region, to the detriment of their availability to represent their clubs.

FIFA was urged to work with all stakeholders to ensure an agreeable conclusion can be reached on the issue.

Even though he will naturally do his best, is this going to affect him somehow mentally? How big is the risk that some subconscious thinking might affect him. What has happened to players in previous similar situations? Erikssen regressed imo, is this correct?

7% ownership doesn't worry me as much.

If he bangs the next two most people who will want him will be taking a hit, then he plays Chelsea anyway. I have a good rank, so less of an issue.

GW7 or so onwards his fixtures are comparable to Lukaku who is cheaper, in a better team. Decide later but give Kane is so expensive, may pass.

Makes Son a better option really though. Potentially.

Avoid. As soon as he hauls people will knee-jerk him in, but he has to do a hell of a lot to be worth the money and 2-3 transfers or a wildcard.

Benrahma plays for Algeria. They play Burkina Faso and Djibouti. None of these countries are on the red list. That said a red list update is due probably today or tomorrow. If none of those countries are on the new red list he can play for Algeria and play GW4. The 5 day rule being enforced or not is not an issue. Algeria currently being on amber list means no quarantine if vaccinated

Kind of agree. But there is an attraction to Son OOP as lone striker. If Kane went then that money would be used, potentially to build attack around Son.

      2. Cok3y5murf

Son's goals were almost all assisted by Kane last season, so why is he less attractive? Depends on what formation Nuno plays, but I've heard some rumors about 352 with both up top like he did with Jota and Jimenez.

Plays for a top 7 team, not the title favorites. Anyway, I meant more in comparison to Son's value. 2.5m more than him is laughable when you compare their points/minutes from last season. Should be a 1m difference.

Better at what? Pace? No. Power? No. Hold-up? No. Finishing? Debatable. Leading the line? No. Creativity? Yes. Technical ability? Yes. Susceptibility to injury? No.

Lukaku is like Drogba, who also didn't hit his peak until age 27. Kane has hit his peak already and is probably one ankle recurrence away from the downslope. I'd take Lukaku over Kane every time.

United have been very unlucky not to have at least one CS. A 1-in-50 kind of strike from outside the box (Ayling) and a wickedly-deflected og from Fred. FPL points don't tell you everything.

True - fixtures aren't too bad comping up. Still not sure he's going to get the assists I was gambling on. Or maybe I should say, he's maybe not going to get as many as I hoped he'd get.

I've to too many other players that need transferring out before him though at the moment.

It is worth noting that the typical summer break period had been altered due to COVID.

Earlier in the year of the previous season there were a couple of months with no football.

There was only a month and a bit between the end of the 19/20 (July 26th) season and the start of the 20/21 (September 12th) season.

For example the the 18/19 ended on 12th May and the 19/20 started on 9th August (over 2 months).

    A) Keep Barnes (for at least one more GW)

    or sell for

    B) Greenwood (have Shaw and Bruno)

    C) Jota (have Salah and TAA, would need to sell Tsimikas)

Not 100% guaranteed that. Tsmikas could keep his place. Depends whether Klopp wants to risk throwing him straight back in.

WC team. Is it too risky??

    TAA, James, Ayling (amartey, Williams)
    Son, Greenwood, Jota, Torres, Raphinha
    Antonio,DCL, Lukaku.

Will rotate the midfield 3 of greenwood jota torres.

    Thoughts?

    When my front line is:

    Ings (vs Brentford)
    Antonio (vs Palace)
    Wilson (vs Saints)

It would be foolish to take a -4 to upgrade one to Kane / Vardy / Kaku at this stage?

Depends on your other defenders and your bench. I would choose a double free transfer next week which will give you more options. If you need a playing defender then Livra probably the way to go.

Sold White for Duffy (hastily). Transferred out a midfielder.

Still has Tsimikas who I will probably bench toll GW5. Hopefully shouldn't fall to 3.9m by then, but meh if so.

Whilst I love Livramento as a player Saints have awful fixtures from a defensive standpoint up until GW9 or so anyway. I won't even want to play him.

Duffy is not nailed either but he's in a better defense, better fixtures & frankly seems to have more of a goal threat too.

Nailed for GW3 and if he plays well and gets through international break unscathed should have a decent chance of keeping his place.

It's tough with the upcoming fixtures honestly. I have Lukaku in FPL since last week and Kane staying makes having Son feel better for me long-term so I feel settled but Kane is so capable of double digit hauls and regularly.
