The best FPL defenders for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard

Having already assessed the best goalkeepers on offer, our position-by-position analysis of the stand-out Fantasy Premier League (FPL) options for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard continues as we take a look at the defenders.

All stats taken from this article are from our Premium Members Area.

BEST PREMIUM DEFENDERS

Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) has already claimed 22 FPL points in the opening three Gameweeks, via two clean sheets, an assist and five bonus points. His 15 chances created is at least five more than any other defender on offer, while his 1.73 expected assists (xA) ranks top amongst all players in 2021/22.

With Leeds United (a), Crystal Palace (h) and Brentford (a) up next, there seems little reason to go without him on a Wildcard, despite the temptation to move funds further forward.

Jurgen Klopp’s adjustment to his positioning, along with Harvey Elliot’s (£5.5m) movement into wider areas, is another intriguing factor to monitor in the coming weeks, as it allows Alexander-Arnold to invert more in the final-third.

Trent Alexander Arnold’s touch heatmap Gameweek 1 (left) v Gameweeks 2 and 3 (right)

Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) offer cheaper routes into the Reds backline, while at champions Manchester City, Ruben Dias (£6.0m) and Joao Cancelo (£6.0m) have completed 90 minutes in all three Premier League matches so far.

The duo have helped Pep Guardiola’s side keep back-to-back clean sheets against Norwich City and Arsenal, and despite some trickier immediate fixtures, take on Southampton (h), Burnley (h), Brighton and Hove Albion (a) and Crystal Palace (h) before the end of October.

Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.0m) also deserves a mention, having performed as both a wing-back and centre-half under Thomas Tuchel this season. However, with cheaper alternatives currently on offer in the Blues backline, his ownership still sits at just 4.1%.

BEST MID-PRICE DEFENDERS

Manchester United’s first-choice backline – Aaron Wan-BissakaRaphael VaraneHarry Maguire and Luke Shaw – are all available at £5.5m, though it is surely the latter who carries the most FPL potential.

Despite seeing just under 300k transfers out this round, Shaw is still the most widely held defender in the game with 47% ownership. Though he hasn’t quite hit his 2020/21 heights so far, he still ranks amongst the top five defenders for chances created and with his crossing ability, paired with corner-taking duties, can surely benefit from the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m). It’s also worth noting that three of United’s next four matches are at Old Trafford. Perhaps a little patience is required here, then?

Chelsea undoubtedly boast one of the meanest defences in Europe, with several mid-price options on offer. Antonio Rudiger (£5.5m) is perhaps the most secure, though the explosive nature of Reece James (£5.6m) once back from suspension may swing it for some. The England international returned 18 FPL points in Gameweek 2 alone and ranks second amongst all defenders for xA per 90 minutes this season.

Andreas Christensen (£5.0m) and Ben Chilwell (£5.8m) are other options, but with Thiago Silva (£5.4m) and Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) lurking, none are immune to rotation. Gameweek 7 has been touted as the ideal time to find space for a Chelsea asset as the fixtures turn significantly for the better, though regardless of opposition, they seem capable of shutting teams out.

Elsewhere, Wolverhampton Wanderers are rightly gaining plenty of Fantasy attention ahead of their fixture swing, which sees them take on Watford (a), Brentford (h), Southampton (a) and Newcastle United (h) in the coming weeks. Despite losing 1-0 in each of their opening three matches, Bruno Lage’s side have faced tough opponents in Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Man Utd. During that time, they have conceded just 27 shots, which is second only to the 15 of Man City, while according to expected goals (xG), only three teams have been better defensively:

Nelson Semedo (£4.9m) is a naturally more conservative wing-back, but in the current back-three set-up, is finding himself in plenty of good attacking positions, while team-mate Romain Saiss (£5.0m) was perhaps a little unfortunate not to score against Man Utd in Gameweek 3.

At Liverpool, Joel Matip (£5.0m) offers a cheap route into Jurgen Klopp’s backline, having re-established himself in the starting XI. It’s also worth noting that he’s amassed seven goal attempts in the box already this season. Amongst all defenders, only Shane Duffy (£4.2m) has more.

Meanwhile, Lucas Digne (£5.4m) could thrive in the coming weeks with Burnley (h), Aston Villa (a) and Norwich City (h) up next. Everton have made a promising start under Rafael Benitez and have conceded just 17 shots in the box so far – only the Manchester clubs have given up fewer. Paired with Digne’s crossing ability, he looks like the stand-out option in the Toffees defence, though Michael Keane (£5.0m) and Seamus Coleman (£5.0m) are also available at cheaper prices.

Arsenal added another defender to the ranks on transfer deadline day, with the signing of Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m). The Gunners have been really poor so far this campaign, but the new arrivals ability to perform as a defensive minded right-back is interesting. That could mean Kieran Tierney (£4.9m) on the opposite flank is given more license to push up, safe in the knowledge that the Japanese defender can tuck in to form a back-three. It’s also worth noting that Mikel Arteta’s side have good fixtures right through until Gameweek 11 (see below), and as Pro Pundit Lateriser said in his recent column, FPL is not about what has happened but rather anticipating what will happen in the future. Maybe a punt on the Arsenal man isn’t such a bad idea, then?

Staying in London, Tottenham Hotspur are the only team yet to concede a goal this season, with Sergio Reguilon (£5.2m) picking up bonus in two of Spurs’ three matches so far, while at West Ham, Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m), Vladimir Coufal (£5.0m) and new signing Kurt Zouma (£5.4m) all have the potential to do well. The latter’s impact was discussed in our Moving Target article, but with the Hammers UEFA Europa League campaign kicking off soon, many will be happy to look elsewhere.

At Man City, Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m), John Stones (£5.3m) and Kyle Walker (£5.5m) are cheaper alternatives to Dias and Cancelo, though in the case of the centre-halves, we may need a few more weeks before we know exactly who Guardiola sees as his first-choice pairing.

Lewis Dunk (£5.0m) and new signing Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) at Brighton can provide value with trips to Brentford, Crystal Palace and Norwich City coming up, though there are perhaps better options for those building Wildcard teams this week, especially with cheaper alternatives available at Albion.

BEST BUDGET DEFENDERS

The hunt for cheaper defenders is always a big part of building a Wildcard squad, such is their importance to free up cash for the premium picks. And fortunately for FPL managers, there are an interesting batch of options worth exploring.

At Spurs, Eric Dier (£4.6m) is perhaps the best budget option, with Davinson Sanchez (£4.5m) out of Gameweek 4 and new signing Emerson Royal (£5.0m) possibly impacting Japhet Tanganga’s (£4.5m) minutes further down the line.

Conor Coady (£4.5m) and Marcal (£4.5m) offer cheaper alternatives at Wolves, while it’s also worth noting that Luke Ayling (£4.5m), who has already scored this season, and Diego Llorente (£4.5m) have promising schedules from Gameweek 5 onwards. Ben White (£4.4m) and Joel Veltman (£4.4m) could also be worth a look.

Brentford have started well, with Pontus Jansson (£4.6m), Ethan Pinnock (£4.6m) and Rico Henry (£4.5m) all impressing, though the fact David Raya (£4.6m) is available at the same price suggests he is probably the best route into Thomas Frank’s defensive set-up. Another newly promoted side, Watford, certainly have the fixtures in place to kick on, with centre-back’s William Troost-Ekong (£4.5m) and Francisco Sierralta (£4.4m) making their first starts together as a defensive pairing in Gameweek 3.

That leaves us with the bargain-bin enablers.

With Kostas Tsimikas (£4.2m) losing his place to Robertson in Gameweek 3, Tino Livramento (£4.1m) looks like an excellent alternative at Southampton. He ranks in the top 10 defenders for xA so far this season, while Man Utd loanee Brandon Williams (£4.0m) is another nice option who may benefit from the arrival of Ozan Kabak (£4.5m).

There is also Duffy, who we touched on earlier, and Daniel Amartey (£4.1m), though it is worth noting that both players have benefitted from injuries to team-mates at their respective clubs and may be on borrowed time. However, Duffy has certainly impressed, which suggests he is perhaps the more likely of the two retain his place.

Good article. I think GW4 wildcard best defenders would be TAA Shaw and Semedo. Obviously moving onto Man City/Chelsea later on.

    TAA Shaw Semedo + White(@4.3)/Livramento/Williams

Cheers Dazz, and yep, I agree with that. Trent, Shaw and Semedo for me, maybe add in Rudiger if using a back four.

Laporte is interesting isn't he mate, just feels like we need a few more weeks so that we can see if he is first choice. Reckon he's ahead of Stones now?

Yeah, in my mind he was the main man got injured and that injury kept coming back - stones got into team and was playing so well it wasn’t worth disrupting the back line

That said I think Laporte is the better CB and pep knows it - now he’s in the team it’s his to lose

Chelsea, Arsenal, Villa, Newcastle, West Ham, Man Utd, Everton, Leeds.

Budget defender rotation, for a playing 3rd/4th spot:

    Veltman* / Livramento / Williams

    GW04: Veltman (BRE)
GW05: Williams (WAT) or Veltman (LEI)**
    GW06: Veltman (CRY)
GW07: Williams (BUR) or Veltman (ARS)**
    GW08: Veltman (NOR)
    GW09: Livramento (BUR)
    GW10: Livramento (WAT)
    GW11: Veltman (NEW)
    GW12: Livramento (NOR)

... GW13 a bit iffy but a long way to go & in GW15/16 etc the rotation is still okay.

*Veltman could be Lamptey if he's genuinely back as its being mentioned (he's 4.5m and close to a drop), or Webster (or Duffy if he kept his spot - even cheaper).

**Home fixtures for. Brighton where they've historically been stronger.

Something like this allows me for example, Sa (WOL) in goal who also has good fixtures throughout - although a viable alternative is a 4.5m GK and Coady/Semedo for example.

    Thoughts? Criticisms? Alternatives?

4.5 seems a lot to spend for a Brighton defender who has away fixtures.

That's why I'd rather it be Lamptey. Arguement for White (ARS) in that spot too - albeit with the caveat it's Arsenal.

I own Duffy. I would prefer to not own a Brighton defender at all but that's the price point I need to be at. Have you looked at wolves. If you're looking at a 4.5 then their fixtures and the way they're currently playing suggest that could be a way better option for a Livramento rotation until gw10

Possible on that pitch. Flat as a pancake. But extremely tough. 4th inning. Tired minds, tired bodies. How the second best batsman in the world plays will decide it. He is half the team.

Right now Williamson. He truly is a great. I’d probably still have Smith above Root even though the former hasn’t got the form. Root is brilliant but Smith is an obsessed freak.

I hope you’re not saying Kohli is first. As much as appreciated his skill in the past. He hasn’t made a proper contribution for a couple of years. Williamson is great but for me Smith is legendary.

    On WC;

    Sanchez
    TAA - Shaw - Reguilon
    Salah - Jota - Torres - Raphinha - Benrahma
    CR7 - Antonio

    Steele; Dennis, Livramento, Williams

    Thoughts?

Ings Bruno Tsimikas to Ronaldo Jota Livramento for -8 and team below. Would you do it? Assuming Firmino misses some games.

Late return to the squad, so got benched for match fitness and Alonso's second (fourth?) coming, Expected to be right back in the reckoning from GW4. I think I saw a Tuchel quote in a previous FFS article, but it's a hazy memory

Fwiw, they rotated like spinning tops last season. Chilwell for the tougher games. That's why Alonso starting vs Liverpool was surprising. Chelsea defence is a minefield at the moment, which is why most are delaying that decision for GW7, regardless of the hauls

ahhhhhhhh!!!! help, some advice would be extremely appreciated:

    (A)
    Sa (4.0)
Trent, Shaw, Reguilon, (Livramemto, Veltman or White)
    Salah, Jota, Torres, Raphinha, Benny
    Ronaldo, Antonio (4.5)

    (B)
    Sanchez (4.0)
Trent, Shaw, Coady or White (Livramemto, Williams)
    Salah, Jota, Torres, Greenwood, Benny
    Ronaldo, Antonio (4.5)

If I flip greenwood (who I am not sure will get the minutes and share of the points now) for Raphinha. I can strengthen the defense a tad.

Do any of these drafts look better than the other to you? or glaring mistakes?

Don't think you need to WC. Bruno & Ings to Jota & Ronaldo minus 4 is my likely plans assuming Firmino is confirmed out.

Moving funds up front, good entry point fixtures for both, Captain option, Jota value playing up front with his fixtures all very attractive.

Slight concern with CL they won't be playing 90 mins every week & no confirmation that Bruno has lost pens, but I'm expecting Ron & Jota to outscore Bruno & Ings by more than 4 points over the next few GWs which justifies the hit IMO.

Means I still have a free transfer next week & trying to stay ahead of the curve, are also factors in my decision.

Key is Firmino information for me. If he's confirmed out for a few GW's in definitely making those moves.

I think they are all a great shout and all could be rotated and I currently have them all.
I think it will do more harm swapping them out currently and if I have to roll out a sub for one game week, its not going to be that much for a big deal. Greenwood is my biggest worry though

It's a little cynical, but I agree for the most part. It's more, some of both. One man can't win alone. He has to add value to the team.

Regarding going 3 x premiums - if I go Salah/Ronaldo/Lukaku and they all hit 200+ over the season (not unthinkable), does that throw the value argument out the window?

How exactly? Trent is capable of 200+ at 7.5. Raphinha is probably projected at 180 at 6.5. Value is value. Anything less than 250 from either of those players you name is a big disappointment. Anything below 200 is a disaster.

And you can only ever captain one...

Haha, what? 180 is not pie in the sky, it's based on last year's data where he was tracking for about 45 pts per quarter season. Obviously you don't realise he only signed in week 5 and only appeared in week 9 due to Bielsa's requirements. He missed a full quarter season and ended up with 133.

Raphinha is definitely capable of 180 - whether he does it or not is obviously another thing

If Ronaldo stays fit all season and gets ~210, which is less than 17 points per million, that's poor value. Ditto for any other player above 11.0.

20 points per million is a decent (albeit slightly low) benchmark, so they need well over 200 if they play 30+ times.

I'm curious about the benchmarks people have now. Even Vardy, a sub-premium has only hit the 200 mark twice. Not sure why these figures are expected across the board for mainstream picks

Vardy is not a player I would own for a whole season, aside from the exceptional case of Leicester's title-winning season. I would get him in for a hot streak and then drop him.

No he absolutely isn't a player you would hold. My point was, this is the sort of player Raphina is being equated to fantasy wise. Sure, he is underpriced and a great pick, but he isn't even the number 9.

Vardy's averaged 187 over the last 6 years, so using 20 points per million as a benchmark for ideal returns, he represents unremarkable (but not categorically bad) value over the course of an average season, which I think is about right for someone who's never started a season above £10.0m.

The trick is to time your transfers well enough to turn his unremarkable long-term value into great short-term value. I think we can all agree that keeping the likes of Vardy for 38 gameweeks and never getting rid would be inefficient and wasteful, hence the idea that he doesn't always hit that benchmark all the time.

The hypothetical benchmark figures aren't very helpful - they ignore our 34 FTs and 2 wildcards, which makes them too long-term. But they're a good barometer for exposing misconceptions about good/bad value - in this case it shows why we shouldn't feel satisfied with Ronaldo/Salah/Lukaku getting past the 200 mark (e.g. last season's Jack Harrison had almost double the points per milion of a 12.5 asset who hits 200).

Still depends on how often you (c) each of them.

200 pts for 12.0m+ is not worth it unless you (c) them. Captaincy basically halves their cost every time you (c) them and so they become comparable with other players who are in the 7m-9m range without (c). Example:

          I (c) Salah GW1 and GW2 and Bruno GW3. So Salah:

          Average cost = (12.5m + 6.25m + 6.25m)/3 = £8.33m
          Average pts = (34 + 6 + 10)/3 = 16.7 pts

I then compare him to similar priced players (i.e. 8m or so) and he has done well when you look at points earned by players like Torres, Jota, Greenwood, Antonio, Bamford.

          Bruno:

          Average cost = (12.0m + 12.0m + 6.0m)/3 = £10.0m
          Average pts = (20 + 1 + 4) /3 = 8.33 pts

Bruno hasn't done so well and has underperformed for a £10.0m player.

OK, I hold my hands up. My logic is flawed.

So 2 x premiums a more reasonable aim complimented by the likes of TAA, Torres, Jota, Raphinha, DCL etc?

          1. diesel001
            • 8 Years
            3 years, 2 months ago

It is not flawed if, for example, over a period of 9 GWs, you (c) each premium 3x and not in consecutive GWs. So that you use your FTs on shifting other non-premium players.

It is only flawed if there is like a stint of 3+ GWs where you won't (c) one of your premiums. Because the VFM may not be worth holding that extra premium in that case and upgrading another player and downgrading the premium.

Here is something that most of FFS will disagree with:

I think there is an argument from GW7 - GW11 to go only with Lukaku as your premium and just (c) him for that streak. Then spread the funds around to pick up a couple of Man City mids, Diogo Jota and another Chelsea mid (say Mason Mount).

              1. Joey Jo-Jo Junior Shabadoo

I kind of agree with this in that I think the optimal number of premiums during this period is 1 (although I think it should be Salah, as 2 Chelsea defenders and Mount would be better).

The most interesting time is gw12-16, which I think is going to be a total mess that nobody seems to have noticed. This is where Ronaldo, Salah, Kane, Son, TAA will be in demand but the mid-price options will struggle. It's a time when ideally your squad will be just big hitters and dirt-cheap enablers, and anybody who can hold out on WC until gw12/14/16 is going to be laughing imo.

All lovely options. My feeling would be Rapha.

Is there a place where the xG and xA data is easily available at a player and team level?

I own 5 of the 6 most sold players - and will likely play them all gw4.

The no TAA wildcard draft really is my favourite I think. Thoughts?

        Sanchez 4.0
        Shaw Matip White (Williams) (Livramento)
        Salah Greenwood Torres Sarr
        Lukaku Ronaldo Antonio

No idea about Greenwood now tith Ronnie in the mix, and i don't really like Sarr, just personal preference. Wouldm't like to rely on White each week also. Overall it's fine, but just a bit 'holey' for me.

I'd be very reluctant to go without TAA, with excellent fixtures and his insane FPL pedigree.

I'm not a fan of your defense in general, Matip is a transfer waiting to happen and Livaramento-Williams-White are lackluster options. I would consider players like Digne, Rudiger and Semedo instead to make up the 3ATB.

*fine options individually, lackluster when you put all of them in one team.

I mean TAA should outscore both Greenwood and Torres (over the season and in the short term), but Matip could be a bargain. Shifting to Trent obv too difficult tho given there are no 4.0m mids so you'd need to free up cash elsewhere.

Can't get on board with the 3 premium teams tbh, they just look short elsewhere.

        On wildcard…
        A) DCL, Christensen, Semedo
        B) Torres, Rudiger, Shaw
