Frisking the Fixtures

Who has the best FPL fixtures in the next six Gameweeks and beyond?

Our frisk of the fixtures sees us assess the Premier League clubs and players with the strongest runs of league matches over the coming weeks – in theory, at least.

The primary focus in this article will be on a six-Gameweek lookahead but we will scrutinise the longer-term prospects where appropriate.

Our colour-coded Season Ticker is the primary source for this piece; using this tool as a Premium Member, you can sort by difficulty, rank by attacking and defensive potential or find budget rotation pairings. You can also set your own difficulty ratings, should you disagree with our own.

BEST FIXTURES

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS

Five-time top 1k FPL finisher Tom Freeman on Calvert-Lewin, Wolves and his Gameweek 2 plans 3

Next six: wat | BRE | sou | NEW | avl | lee

The audition by Wolverhampton Wanderers assets in the first three Gameweeks doesn’t look too promising on paper, with a hat-trick of defeats and zero goals scored.

But the performances have been very encouraging in spells, with only Liverpool and Manchester City registering more shots on goal than Wolves in the opening three rounds.

At the other end of the pitch, it’s only City who have allowed fewer attempts on their own goal.

And Wolves’ fixtures are about to get very good indeed, with Bruno Lage’s troops sitting top of our Season Ticker from now until the end of November.

In fact, they don’t meet a single member of the ‘big six’ (if that is such a thing anymore) from Gameweeks 4-14.

Encounters with all three promoted clubs and seven of the teams who finished between ninth and 17th in the top flight last season fall within this run, including matches against teams with ropey-looking defences in the form of Watford, Southampton, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Leeds – who have one clean sheet combined – between now and Gameweek 9.

LEEDS UNITED

  • Next six: LIV | new | WHU | WAT | sou | WOL

With influential midfielder Kalvin Phillips (£5.0m) back to full match-sharpness, Raphinha (£6.5m) bursting into life in Gameweek 2 and dominant centre-half Diego Llorente (£4.5m) available again, now could be a good time to think about Leeds assets – if you weren’t already.

Not only that but they sit first on our Season Ticker over the next seven Gameweeks, with the upcoming home fixture against Liverpool the only blob of red in sight.

Newcastle, West Ham and Southampton’s defensive form deserted them in the second half of last season and continues to do so in 2021/22: they have kept fewer Premier League clean sheets from Gameweek 20 onwards than any other current top-flight sides.

And Watford have shipped five goals in the opening two Gameweeks, on top of the 10 they conceded to Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Brentford in pre-season.

While Patrick Bamford (£7.9m), an array of budget defenders and the set-piece taking Raphinha are obvious targets, it’s worth noting that Jack Harrison (£5.9m) delivered more attacking returns against Leeds’ Gameweek 4-9 opponents last season (eight) than any of his teammates.

ARSENAL

Next six: NOR | bur | TOT | bha | CRY | AVL

“FPL is not about what has happened but rather anticipating what will happen in the future.” So said three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser in his latest Pro Pundits piece for the site.

What has happened to Arsenal in the first month of the season is well documented but what will happen with the Gunners upon their imminent fixture swing is the burning question.

Mikel Arteta’s side sit rock-bottom of the Premier League table, goalless and having shipped nine goals in their opening three matches of 2021/22.

They are also top of our Season Ticker over the next eight Gameweeks, with a favourable run of matches starting in Gameweek 4.

There’s been precious little to encourage FPL investment so far but there are mitigating circumstances: the Gunners have arguably just faced two of the best sides in the division, have had their start to the campaign blighted by a coronavirus outbreak, have yet to see arguably their best two centre-halves – Ben White (£4.4m) and Gabriel (£5.0m) – playing in tandem and have been missing Thomas Partey (£5.0m) in the last few weeks.

The opening-day Brentford defeat was miserable but it’s worth remembering that they recorded more shots than any other side in Gameweek 1, with the absence of their three first-choice strikers a contributing factor in their failure to put away any of those chances.

Arteta’s troops were also among the form sides of 2021 before the start of this season; it’s unwise to disregard them completely over the next eight Gameweeks and the battering of West Brom reserves in the EFL Cup did illustrate their potential against the lesser lights.

EVERTON

Next six: BUR | avl | NOR | mun | WHU | WAT

Everton enjoyed favourable fixtures in August and their appealing run continues over the next seven Gameweeks.

Five of their next seven opponents either finished ninth or below in the Premier League last season or came up from the Championship.

Few clubs have better medium-term runs on home turf, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.2m) and co facing Burnley, Norwich City, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers in their next four matches at Goodison Park.

None of those clubs have kept a clean sheet yet.

Carlo Ancelotti’s erstwhile troops were in awful form on Merseyside in 2020/21 but the return of supporters to Goodison Park, the positive start under Rafael Benitez and the fixture calendar will give them an excellent chance of remedying that.

With the obvious exception of newly promoted Norwich and Watford, Calvert-Lewin hit seven attacking returns in nine appearances against his Gameweek 4-10 opponents in 2020/21.

ALSO CONSIDER

Sarr underlines differential potential as Chelsea earn another clean sheet 3

Watford (WOL | nor | NEW | lee | LIV | eve) ride high on our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 4-10 but it’s fair to say that their next three fixtures are a darn sight more appealing than the subsequent triple-header.

A clean sheet-less Norwich and Newcastle have shipped a combined 18 goals over the first three Gameweeks, for those eyeing up a move for Ismaila Sarr (£6.0m) or Emmanuel Dennis (£5.2m).

In fact, Gameweeks 4 and 7 opponents Wolves and Leeds United have also yet to record a shut-out this season.

At the other end, the recent return of the Hornets’ best centre-half, Francisco Sierralta (£4.4m), and significant upgrades in central midfield will boost Daniel Bachmann‘s (£4.5m) FPL potential – although with upcoming opponents Wolves, Liverpool and Everton among the top six sides for shots in the box attempted, save points may be more forthcoming than clean sheets.

FPL Gameweek 2 round-up: Sunday goals, assists, bonus and injuries

Gameweek 7 is widely being viewed as the time to pounce on Chelsea (AVL | tot | MCI | SOU | bre | NOR) assets but ignore Thomas Tuchel’s troops before then at your peril.

Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) is in ‘captain’ territory in Gameweek 4, with an Aston Villa side who are missing Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m) and who have already conceded four goals to two newly promoted sides set to visit Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have also won all three of their games against Gameweek 6 opponents Manchester City since Tuchel’s appointment and defeated Spurs 1-0 in their corresponding Gameweek 5 fixture last season.

Wilson fit again as Norwich's Covid-affected pre-season bodes well for Liverpool

In a similar boat to Arsenal but without the top-level pedigree to suggest their 100% losing record is a mere blip, Norwich City (ars | WAT | eve | bur | BHA | che) have the fixtures but not the form from Gameweek 4 onwards.

Their run over the next 11 Gameweeks is perhaps as appealing as that of Wolves, with only Chelsea of last season’s top seven to face in that time.

Among the Canaries’ ranks is the latest addition to the starting budget FPL defender pool, Brandon Williams (£4.0m).

Because you to cut down costs somewhere, and you have done it in defence.
You can't expectuch from Livra and Duffy playing every week. Will your 3rd big hitter compensate for that?

I would look at it this way :
      A. Duffy, Livramento and Lukaku
      B. Shaw, Digne and DCL

Provided you have decent captain options in Salah and Ronaldo and unlikely to captain Lukaku, definitely think B outscores A easily

That’s a strong line of argument. I wa t to take the opportunity with the WC to get ahead of the curve though. I know everyone is saying they’ll sell Ronaldo GW7 for Lukaku but will they really be able to sell Ronaldo. I mean, it’s Ronaldo!

        1. Sanchit

What I know is, everyone will bring Lukaku in for sure.
Might be for Ronaldo, for Salah, or taking hits.
But I can't see any half decent active manager not having Lukaku come GW8.
( Similar to how everyone's breaking their teams to get Ronaldo in for Newcastle), the FOMO would be extreme.

So I think, going with Lukaku, you'll benefit of A outscores B in the next 3/4 fixtures. If you believe in that, then you're GTG

Duffy, Livramento, Williams supported by Amartey takes balls of absolute steel

But have to say, I like it

Was going to say maybe Sarr / Traore / ESR / Gray for Benrahma and upgrade Amartey to Ayling... but to be fair Benrahama is doing a lot more than any of those and if you got in at 6.0 he's probably too good to sell

Those 4x 4.0 defenders is very risky though

        • 10 Years

Yep I had Benrahma at 6m so I’m reluctant to sell. I do think he has more to offer as well. It is high risk, I agree!

Actually mate, in hindsight, 4x 4.0's is bananas - get 2 of them upgraded at a minimum, ideally 3 of them, & use Torres > Sarr/Traore/Gray/ESR to fund it

Livramento would be the one I'd keep

Foden & KDB will be back soon to join Mahrez, Sterling, Grealish, Torres, Bilva in competing for one of Pep's 5 attacking slots for their upcoming fixtures & Torres could be in & out as a result, especiall with the CL kicking in soon too

Problem with this is getting reece james and other 5.5 to 6 mil defenders for their favorable fixtures

I also toyed with this setup. Maybe try to get a semedo for Duffy or amartey and downgrading torres to sarr or traore or gray will be a better option

I'd worry about your bench but at the same time don't think you need to WC, you've got a pretty good base to that team, I'd be tempted to save just to have 2ft but I like B as well, but you might feel like you need Ronaldo next week after taking a hit for Lukaku so it's a tough one

Can any Wolves fan help me understand if he's actually attacking enough ( and good at it), the numbers don't say so, and if you want a Wolves def for clean sheets, you can get one for 4.5.

Digne has attacking threat for sure, with an improved defence under Rafa.

If money is no issue, then I personally prefer Digne over Semedo

It's borderline. You could be fine for this GW with a possible -4 for CR7, then wait a week or two with WC to gain more information. But then, there's always those price changes

True, I could wait, my other issue is this game week

All of my defenders are playing at least one of my attackers so any goal is going to wipe my CS lol, I know it’s only 1 week but I still don’t like it

I'd say go for the WC, I was in a similar dilemma to an extent (needed to sort 2-3 defs and about 3 attackers) so I just said better to do it now, didn't see any point in waiting on losing value and playing a team I thought would mostly do poorly

One I’ve just made but does depend on firminho and Laporte injury news. Full playing bench, what do you think?

              4.5

              Salah jota Raph sarr

As good as anything I've seen. Not sure I like the White pick Twitter link a in post above indicated that Laporte injury not that bad, so you might have to use more £ in defense. And you want funds to squeeze in Chelsea defender later, so DCL may have to be downgraded

Jota/Greenwood/Torres all have the merits and risks

Mount more stable but a little boring

Raphinha should be good over the course of the season

Sarr or Traore if you need to save a bit

        Has to be Raphinha surely

He's already 7 points ahead of his points total from GW8 last season, with 5 games in hand

Reckon he'll smash well clear of the 150 barrier this season, and push up towards 180+

If you have him then you're looking at Sarr / Traore / Gray / ESR

All four of them have lovely fixtures and can get returns (Of those 4 - Sarr should have penalties and his next 3 fixtures might be profitable)

        1. Sanchit

I think the comparison with GW8 last season is wrong.
He started late last season and wasn't part of the squad till GW4 I think

Yup that's what I'm getting at - he's already firmly on track to be way ahead of last season

He hadn't even been added to the game until GW5, didn't get his first start until GW9, didn't really get going until GW14 etc etc

      Schmeichel
      Shaw, Rudiger, Marcal, Livramento, Amartey
      Salah, Mount, Raphinha, Sissoko, Bissouma

Aim of the game is maximise points. Seems to me like you aren't doing that. It's no big deal you can easily swap any big hitter out for any other player any time. I just think it's a poor wildcard structure

You're relying on the big hitters to all have mega seasons, which isn't outlandish as they are all more than capable of this. I'd downgrade Digne and strengthen bench to give another 11th playing option.

        1. Get up ya bum
          • 15 Years

Not only that. Also relying on all the standout mid price attackers not doing great

            • 9 Years
            3 years, 2 months ago

Not really. If these 3 all score 25+ goals then their difference in price over Torres/Greenwood/Jota should be justified as Torres/Greenwood/Jota are unlikely to get near those numbers. If they start looking like they might, nothing is ever more than 2 transfers away anyway.

I'm not saying it's a definite winning strategy, but it's not one that should be dismissed just because it isn't the template strategy.

Not a fan of having all of Sarr, Traore and Gray, and if you want to shift them later there isn't really good alternatives at the pricepoint without downgrading a premium.

Feel DCL instead of Lukaku gives you better balance in the mid.

      Opinions welcomed!

      Sanchez
      TAA, Shaw, Coady, Ayling/Dier
      Salah, Torres, Gray
      Ronaldo, Lukaku, Antonio

      (Foster, Allan, Sissoko, Livramento)

      - Prefer 3-4-3 but this looks the most balanced route to 3 premiums +TAA
      - Gray is looking decent value so far and gives some cover for no DCL
      - Torres looks too good to turn down regardless of rotation risk
      - Leaves a weak-ish/cheap 11th spot, but Leeds, Everton and Watford have good fixtures for a while so Ayling/Allan/Sissoko rotation should work.

One of the betting agencies has early goalscorer markets up. Been a bit of discussion about 'predicting the future' here, well no-one does it better than bookies, their livelihood depends on it. I know this is for one week only, some players score more from assists, etc, but gives a guide i guess and as to whether to do that transfer this week or next week, or do i really need that premo. Prices below for names bandied about (converted to % chance of goal)

      Captains/Premos:
Ronny 69% (30% to get two goals or more)
      Bruno 57% (20%)
      Lukaku 56% (19%)
      Salah 52% (16%)
      Harry 46% (12%)

      Mid priced forwards
      DCL 49%
      Auba 48%
      Antonio 42%
      Jimi 40%
      Toney 36%
      Bam Bam 31%
      Vardy 26%
      Ings 20%

      Mid priced mids:
      Greenwood 52%
      Jota 43%
      Son 38%
      Havertz 36%
      Torres 35%
      Grealish 29%
      Mount 27%

Cheaper Mids: (obviously these guys are more in the assist rather than goal bracket tho)
      Benhrama 25%
      Gray 24%
      Sarr 22%
      Traore 21%
      Mbueno 21%
      ESR 20%
      Raph 20%
      Trincao 19%

Think its more of a case of them covering their butts this far out in case Ronny doesn't play

Bookies odds aren't just predicting outcome though. Their focus is making profit against the punters.

Yes very correct - however they do have to offer odds reasonable enough to get people to bet while keeping their margin.
Simply put here for information, use it how you will 🙂

One thing to take note of is :
Bookies odds are not directly related to 'predictoing the future'. The odds are also dependent on customer sentiment ( we all know Ronaldo will be getting lots of nets on him and they can't risk it) and they try to offset all the players against each other ( if they get thousands of bets of first goalscorer on Ronaldo, they will probably give better pricing for Bruno so people bet on Bruno and the bets are offset against each other).

Betting sites are not simply about predicting what happens in a match. They have to be very clever to have bids all across and offset so that literally any outcome makes them profit.

Yep very true. Take the above posts with all those caveats, just info on the first lot of seen. Note that these are anytime scorer odds, not first goalscorer

Checking the "goals scored" odds at the end of last week - Bookies were giving Man Utd a better chance of a big score:

To score 4 or more decimal (fractional) percentage:
        Man Utd - 3.5 (5/2) 28.6%
        Chelsea - 5.0 (4/1) 20%

I'd expect Man Utd's odds to shorten even further during the week too as the money from fan punters starts to come in - and if Villa get some of those key defensive guys back (Martinez/Mings etc)

Goalscorer odds weren't (and stil aren't with PP) released at that point - but its interesting that sentiment is reflected in the early CR7/Kaku odds above

Martinez is pretty much confirmed no GW4 - he has to quarantine doesnt he?

Not sure - does all that nonsense with Brazil Argentina last night change anything

            Is Mings back though

Don't think it does. That was Brazil quarantine laws cos of UKs numbers, whereas coming back are UK laws because of Brazil numbers.. and Brazil's issue was the Argentines didn't quarantine.
Mings not sure, probably wait for the presser later in the week on that one

The Argentinian foursome still sniffed the air in a red zone country - doesn't that mean they're still subject to 14 day quarantine on their return?

Always nice to see %. Especially the early ones since they are not as influenced by those making bets on this.

We got to remember that those % goes up and down due to people betting. If enough people bet on Bruno not scoring his % will rise above CR7 at some point etc.
That does not indicate, that Bruno is more likely to score, but is how they keep making money at every single bet.

As a result I don't know how old those bets are, and if I were to pick either Traoré or Sarr (like many on WC is debating), and I let these % influence me into picking Sarr, then I could be very wrong if the bets have been on the market for quiet some time, and Traoré started on 32%, but has fallen to 21% due to people placing bets.

The market is very new, i checked 5 sites, and only one site had just put up individual scorers

So my WC boils down to Lukaku or DCL.

Going by above post on bookies odds, no point in dishing out the extra £ for Lukaku

Correct. I think the bookie has it wrong and has used algorithms rather than the context of the missing AVL defenders. Looking at taking the early odds on Kaku myself :p

I was never really interested. Prefer a fit DCL + Cr7 for now. Cr7 to Lukaku an easy swap
PS: Stones in my WC team...

          😉

if i was WCing it would be DCL. In addition to Pompel's point, the following 2 fixtures heavily favour DCL. Just make sure you can get Lukaku in for GW7 youll want him then

      A) Ings -> DCL and B next week
      B) Bruno, Toney -> Raphinha, Ronaldo
      C) Ings, Bruno, Toney -> Ronaldo, Raphinha, DCL (-4)
