FPL Gameweek 8 team news: Alexander-Arnold and Jota expected to be available

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and Diogo Jota (£7.6m) are expected to be available for Liverpool’s Gameweek 8 clash with Watford on Saturday.

Alexander-Arnold missed the Reds’ last two competitive fixtures before the October international break due to a groin problem, while Jota withdrew from Portugal’s national team squad on Monday having not kicked a ball for his country over the last week.

But both players are set to rejoin full training with their club colleagues ahead of the trip to Vicarage Road.

“They are all good, they are all in a good way, let me say it like this.

“So it looks really like Trent and Diogo will be fine, they will train with us tomorrow completely normal, that’s the plan.” – Jurgen Klopp, speaking on Wednesday about his side’s fitness

Both Liverpool players have hemorrhaged owners since Gameweek 7, with Alexander-Arnold the most-sold defender ahead of this Saturday’s FPL deadline and Jota fourth for transfers out among midfielders.

The right-back will surely return to the Liverpool starting XI this weekend if fully recovered but with Roberto Firmino (£8.8m) not involved with Brazil over the last fortnight, there is less certainty over whether Jota will be handed his fifth successive league start regardless of fitness.

The Saturday lunchtime contest is likely to come too soon for Thiago Alcantara (£5.3m), who has a calf problem.

“Thiago needs probably a little bit longer, [he] was not in team training yet – that’s always not a good sign for starting the next game.

“And the rest [of the] international [players], some are back, obviously some are not back yet. And we will see.” – Jurgen Klopp

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Harry Maguire (£5.4m) revealed he was “progressing” from a calf issue but had still not been involved in full training with Manchester United, which suggests that the Red Devils are set to be without both first-choice centre-halves for the trip to Leicester City.

The only official pre-match press conference of the day saw Claudio Ranieri on media duties for new employers Watford.

The Hornets earlier confirmed that Joshua King (£5.5m) would be assessed after a return to training but that Francisco Sierralta (£4.3m), Christian Kabasele (£4.4m) and Peter Etebo (£4.5m) remain out with muscle problems.

We should have a minimum of five pre-Gameweek 8 press conferences taking place on Thursday, with the rest following on Friday.

Doubt it with Firmino staying at the club during IB unless Mane or Salah are late back

Jota has hardly played in the last 2 weeks either so I don’t think this argument is particularly relevant anymore

The argument of Firmino staying at the club? Training with Klopp over the IB surely puts him into contention over Jota who has had a minor injury over the break?

Jota has been declared fit, available and training, he’s as ready as he will be, you could even say he’s done less training and therefore would benefit from getting the minutes more than Bobby who I think starts against athletico

Anyway it’s still 50/50 and could go either way I recon Tony

Funny thing is, I'm not very sure Klopp knows this now. He might decide on the last day of training. Or maybe he's already had a way of picking 'em since Jota emerged

It's 50:50 for those of us outside his head

I just think if Jota was to start it would be for one of Mane or Salah due to the mins played over the IB and depending on when they get back to the club. I can't see Firmino not starting this GW.

Mane played 180 minutes during the IB. Liverpool play Saturday morning and then play Atletico away on Tuesday. I think Jota gets a decent number of minutes even if benched.

I think the hwang and mbeumbo is the reason but the first is an enabler to son and mbeumbo is playing Oop with good fixtures soon.

I just can't see any other mid range mids that offer good value and are guaranteed minutes.

Lose Luiz due to the Brazil issue. You might need that third sub this week, so maybe Brownhill or Allan

      1. Tonyawesome69
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 28 days ago

With the team he has, it is unlikely he will need to go to his 3rd bench player

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 6 Years
          3 years, 28 days ago

Lukaku, Raph, Rudiger. Unlikely, but not impossible this week. And none seems likely to be out long enough to sell, if they're out. Hence the third sub

And if Cancelo gets surprisingly rested in the easy game with Zinch back, a whole new can of worms

Luiz adds to the list, rather than providing an emergency replacement (which is his role as 3rd sub), and there are other options at that price, hence my point...

          1. Tonyawesome69
            • 5 Years
            3 years, 28 days ago

Of course we need to wait and see on Lukaku and Rudiger but I highly doubt they won't start this weekend when reading all the info the international managers have said on them.

            Raphinha highly unlikely to play.

Zinchenko could be available for selection but I doubt he will be ready to start against Burnley.

It is only for 1GW if all the players listed are a problem and most likely 1-2 points from the 4.4/4.5m options

            1. Ze_Austin
              • 6 Years
              3 years, 28 days ago

...so he should *not* switch Luiz to someone who's available for GW8 at the same price, is what you're saying? For free? On a WC?

              Like, Allan or Brownhill?

Because that's my point in both messages. Do you disagree with that?

              1. Tonyawesome69
                • 5 Years
                3 years, 28 days ago

Nope I don't think he should. Luiz is a long term pick on WC and if he feels he is the better option in that price bracket long term even though he is likely to miss 1 game then he shouldn't switch. Similar reasons to keeping Raphinha

                1. Ze_Austin
                  • 6 Years
                  3 years, 28 days ago

Okay... So a third sub should be kept even when he'll miss the one time he might ever be needed in a team of 13/14 regular starters, because he's the best third sub

                  Understood

                  I'll let it go, then

My original team was Ronaldo, Shaw etc etc. I know deep down it's time to move on from them but it seems so odd moving away from household names. I think the fixture swing was the key decision factor

Unfortunate you are 0.1 short to do Shaw to TAA. Delay the Raphinha transfer as it is unlikely he will play. Bruno up against a poor LEI defence is a keep for this GW

    For draft not FPL

Given the choice should it be the other Armstrong or Elyounussi? Are they mutually exclusive - ie playing for one position?

Nope, Armstrong on right, Ely on left.

I'll need to do some more research. It looks as if Ely has been on the right from FBref - could be misleading that of course.

Interesting. They are probably right then, I have only watched their highlights till date and majority of the crosses he made were from left side. (iirc!)

Didnt start vs Chelsea, so not sure whether he is nailed.

Thing is that you're right that El Younoussi would appear to be a predominantly left sided player looking at his Celtic days and it's not exactly encouraging he was benched for Chelsea.

            Lottery I guess.

    TAA, James, Cancelo, White
    Salah, Gray, Saka
    Ronaldo, Antonio, ASM

Have 1ft which will be used on Marcal>Cancelo

I don't understand why people post after they've made their transfers. The whole point is that you ask before and use the advice to guide your plan for the week.

You've already decided on Marcal > Cancelo. That's it then. It's a good plan.

      1. Silecro
        • 6 Years
        3 years, 28 days ago

I didnt make a transfer, this is only planned transfer which will take place after press conferences to confirm everything is good. I still have 1ft in bank which I plan to use on Marcal>Cancelo, so therefore asking if team is in good condition with that transfer in mind (ofc if Salah or Ronaldo get long term injured tomorrow, that ft will be used on them instead)

I vaguely recall when Stones signed a new deal with City he got benched the following week.

I’m sure its happened to some others too, I feel like Bilva/Mahrez somebody like that.

Foden imminently signing a big 150k a week contract. You know whats going to happen!

Here's your surprising comparison of the day...

    Brownhill vs Luiz

    xGI: 0.83 vs 1.00
    Goal attempts 6 vs 5
Shots in the box 3 vs 0
Pen area touches 11 vs 2
    Corners taken 4 vs 11

The heatmap is also in favor of Brownhill who is playing further forward than Luiz.

Save the 0.1m or 0.2m imo and go Brownhill. If he's last sub he'll probably come on once in the next 15 weeks anyway.

Yes and no. Luiz I think is taking set pieces while Buendia is out of the team. When Buendia is in I don't think he'll take them. Brownhill only takes occasional corners.

    2. BeWater
      • 4 Years

The chances of Luiz outscoring Brownhill in some random week in the future when you need your 3rd sub is pretty low. The chance of that 0.2 being useful later is far higher.
