Antonio on target as Son and Kane’s FPL blanks are assessed

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 9 Scout Notes with analysis of West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur.

WEST HAM UNITED 1-0 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

  • Goals: Michail Antonio (£8.1m)
  • Assists: Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m)
  • Bonus (projected): Cresswell x3, Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) x2, Kurt Zouma (£5.4m) x1, Antonio x1

ANTONIO NETS WINNER

Antonio on target as Tottenham attack fails to impress 1

Michail Antonio (£8.1m) netted his sixth Premier League goal of the season on Sunday, and as a result, sits joint-top of the forward standings alongside Jamie Vardy (£10.8m).

The Jamaican international had failed to return in three of his last four appearances, but poked in Aaron Cresswell’s (£5.5m) corner, which moves West Ham up to fourth in the table on 17 points.

“With Michail Antonio we just felt it was better we looked after him on Thursday. It’s something I’ll have to do quite a bit, and sometimes we’ll decide it’s worth playing him and other times it’s not. There’s no injury problems with him but we’ll always try and manage and decide when it’s good for him and when it’s not.” – David Moyes on resting Michail Antonio in midweek

The nature of the goal is also worth noting ahead of Gameweek 10, given that their opponents Aston Villa have had real difficulties defending dead-ball situations in recent weeks, which was again evident at the Emirates Stadium on Friday.

As for Antonio, he now embarks on a tougher run of fixtures (see below), but given today’s performance, owners will surely be content to hold.

Meanwhile, it’s now four games in a row without a goal or assist for Said Benrahma (£6.6m), despite ranking second for goal attempts amongst all midfielders during that time.

However, only five have arrived in the box, and because of that, he sits 21st in his category over the last four Gameweeks for expected goals (xG).

Said Benrahma’s xG shot map Gameweeks 6 to 9

Defensively, David Moyes’ side kept their third clean sheet of the season, with Aaron Cresswell delivering a season-high 12-point haul thanks to his second assist of the campaign.

LACKLUSTRE SPURS

As for Tottenham, there was a real lack of attacking threat on show at the London Stadium, as Harry Kane (£12.1m) and Son Heung-min (£10.2m) could muster just two shots on goal between them.

In fact, during the second half, Spurs did not have a single goal attempt.

Despite showing signs of improvement against Newcastle United and Aston Villa, it’s now just nine Premier League goals in nine games for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side. Only Norwich City, Burnley, Southampton and Leeds United have scored fewer, while the underlying numbers are equally concerning, as they rank 19th for non-penalty xG (see below).

However, the fixtures do at least give them a platform to improve, as they take on some of the divisions worst performing defences in the coming weeks.

Next up is a Manchester United side fresh from a 5-0 defeat against Liverpool, while they also take on Everton – who also shipped five in Gameweek 9 – Leeds United, Burnley, Brentford and Norwich City between Gameweeks 10 and 15.

“We were the better team, honestly. I think we controlled the game, we had chances. We had possession. West Ham are a good team but they only created chances on counter-attacks and set-pieces. We played better, but this is football.

The last pass was there but we need to be more aggressive in our offensive game. We controlled the game. The whole game was under control.

The table is a reference but doesn’t guide us. We have to improve our character as a team, our wish to want to achieve a better team game. We need to work on that.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

West Ham XI: Fabianski, Johnson, Zouma, Ogbonna, Cresswell, Rice, Soucek, Bowen (Dawson 90+1), Benrahma (Lanzini 85), Fornals, Antonio

Spurs XI: Lloris, Royal, Romero, Dier, Reguilon (Gil 84), Skipp, Hojbjerg, Moura (Bergwijn 90+1), Ndombele (Lo Celso 84), Son, Kane

I think unlikely to recover that quickly - it looked pretty bad and he /Leeds won’t know until scanned I guess

Depends, if it's just a knock which I've got a sneaky feeling it is then he has a chance. If there's any sort of muscle ligament damage then no but no need to make a decision yet wait for news

For a hit of -4, is it worth to trf Benhrama> Mount/Grealish? Short of 0.1m on Foden or Harvetz.

Funny old game isn't it, 2 lucky finishes and everyone is rushing to get Foden. Don't get me wrong, he's a decent pick, but....

City scored 5 vs Brugge, Foden played 65 minutes - 1 assist.
90 Minutes vs Burnley, City scored 2 - Nothing for Foden
90 in both games vs Hungry and Andorra, England scored 6 in total, Foden with 1 assist.

He's a decent pick, but, i wouldn't go taking hits or removing other decent picks for him. City will share points and share minutes.

I'm not overly keen on him either, but, i think yes given the fixtures. He's on set pieces aswell and Chelsea do score a few from set pieces.

I still think the two picks if you can go up a little in price are Son and Rashford.

Marks even been pushed into wildcarding just to get Foden. Seems rash to me. Foden is a fantastic player, but he's still young, he's not consistent in his finishing, sometimes he takes too many touches.

Funny old game, players can get better through out a season and go through good patchs of form, his still maturing , but defo worth a spot at 8m, class player and one of Pep's favourites

I'm not saying he's a bad pick, just that i wouldn't go taking hits/Wildcarding/removing a player with a good fixture just to get him. I don't see him as a player who will ruin your season, yet.

You obviously didn't see the man city game then. Everything is going through foden. Torres and sterling taken out of the equation also. Playing up front as false 9.

I did. Like i said, good pick, but don't go taking hits to get him. He's still young and a little rash, he'll get points, but i wouldn't expect too many more braces.

Well I saw him as a 3 week punt. If it went well (and it has) I may keep him. Not sure if those who haven’t had him for the 3 game hot streak should do damage to their team or not but now UTD have confirmed they are whipping boys, I’ll almost certainly keep him longer than I expected to.

Didn’t get him as he wasn’t for me. Playing it patient. I have and had a few key targets this season and waited for them to show something. Shouldn’t have gone with Vardy but hey ho.

He's arguably been the best playing this false 9 role for City... It's his spot to lose... Oop Foden at 8m is a no brainer to me with Torres out.

Some cracking scores on show, anyone else have a mare?

Alonso - benched - now gone.

Five players scored 2 or 1, mainly 1’s

      Salah C the big +

      Rudi 9

Removed, Bamford, Lukaku, Antonio > Auba, Vardy, Toney

Smooth, Alonso gets hooked for Livramento

Dropped 90k… the only way is up 🙂

One thing I learnt in fpl, is not to cap differentials. You can have differentials sure, but dont cap them. Its too damaging, and you are normally wrong (better against the vast majoirty of the player base).

Captain hinsight I know, but it is good fantasy advice

It’s actually a very old adage. Punt with your team, not with your captain. I stick by this.
There will be many more this season that will continue to punt, and, in a few years, they will learn.

Its hard not to do it, I still do, but getting better.
It rarely pays off, and when Salah or someone expoldes like this then its just horrific. At the moment its a bit unsual because Salah is on fire, but when he isnt, cap is a bit more in the air but still only 2/3 real captain candidates.

Son is always a tricky one, he is captain material alot more then people give him credit for imo, but still he is a differential, risky cap. But Vs Man U for instance, I would probably cap him if I had him over Salah.

Your first paragraph doesn’t apply so much as that would be less of a punt. What I’m saying is, if there’s a clear form player and you go against the grain with the captain it will almost always hurt. Like I’ve captained Antonio this year, but that was due to me thinking their wasn’t a clear option. Turned out they all blanked.

I guess, some weeks cases can be made, like what I said about Son above. Salah still gonna bag tho, i already feel like im on the back foot when I expect Salah to score

That’s boring tho. I captained Fernandes Gw3 last season when he had tiny ownership and he hauled. Everyone else went KDB and he blanked. Caught up with everyone else after not having Salah in GW1.

The only way to make up large ground quickly is with the captaincy. At the same time, you can fall further back but I couldn’t go with the Vanilla captain every week, would just get so boring.

Yes, he hides in games. Coasts through the 90 minutes. Every Chelsea player on the pitch returned yesterday other than Havertz, that doesn't tell you something about him as a player or FPL prospect? They score 7 goals and he didn't look like scoring or assisting once.

Somebody has to say it straight. This place creates bandwagons, i've fallen into traps in the past because of it. Havertz was never a good pick. He has shown no pedigree in the PL. He has no real goal or assist threat, he's invisible on the pitch.

Points please. Other defenders are Cancelo, Trent, Livra or White so not worried about rotation risk too much. Christensen feels like one now without any upside. Leaning towards Chilly given he seems to avoid cameos.

Chilwell looks best at the moment, Rudiger and Azpi may get more start and Chilwell is unlikely to sub on.

Which would you say has the most starts? I'd say Chilwell for both.

James has arguably less competition at RWB, but hard for Chilwell to lose the shirt given current form. He’s on fire.

Not sure thats the case anymore with Chalobahs emergence. Could see Azpi RWB in tougher games.

Raph taken to social media to say he’s fine, injury nothing too serious but I guess we have to hear from Bielsa or club officials for yellow flag to be removed?

Does everyone still want Spurs assets? They look so bad I’m thinking of skipping them. Salah will be the captain most weeks anyway

I've got son but I'll pass on kane until he starts showing some form, and I wouldn't be looking to get son in atm if I didn't already have him

Yeah this was my thinking. I’m probably prioritising Foden instead

Gotta have one from gw12 at least. Leaning towards Son, as no premium forwards really essential anyway

Do you though? Other assets will do well and I’m not captaining a Son over Salah in most of those weeks

I'd say so - GW's 12-15 as good as it gets , and Son is quality regardless of Nuno. Budget not so much of a concern with the expensive premium forwards not on form

yeah i want Son, but he can wait as i expect a Utd backlash next week
