Armstrong ends goal drought as Livramento keeps up fine FPL form

We begin our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 11 Scout Notes with analysis of Southampton v Aston Villa.

SOUTHAMPTON 1-0 ASTON VILLA

  • Goals: Adam Armstrong (£5.9m)
  • Assists: none
  • Bonus (projected): Adam Armstrong x3, Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) x2, Jan Bednarek (£4.4m) x2

ARMSTRONG NETS WINNER

Armstrong ends goal drought as Livramento delivers again

Prior to Gameweek 11, Adam Armstrong (£5.9m) had failed to score since the opening day, having attempted 25 shots without finding the back of the net. However, an excellent first-time strike after just three minutes tonight got Southampton off to the perfect start, and ensured that the 24-year-old has now bagged attacking returns in back-to-back Gameweeks.

“No pressure for me, I know I can score goals, I have had chances and as a striker that is football. You cannot be too down on yourself.” – Adam Armstrong

After another two goal attempts against Aston Villa, Armstrong has now registered 29 shots this term, second only to Michail Antonio (£8.2m) amongst all forwards.

With Che Adams (£6.8m) and Adam Armstrong paired up front together again, budget forward Armando Broja (£5.0m) had to settle for a place on the bench, with a frustrating 10-minute cameo ensuring he ends the Gameweek with just one point.

After tonight’s win, Southampton have now taken 10 points from their last four matches. During that time, they have kept three clean sheets and conceded just two goals, ahead of an appealing away trip to Norwich City after the international break.

FULL-BACKS IMPRESS

Elsewhere, Southampton’s full-backs were both excellent on the night, and regularly found themselves in advanced positions.

That was enhanced after a switch to a three-at-the-back formation following the introduction of Lyanco (£4.5m), but it was encouraging all the same, and bodes well for their prospects moving forwards.

Tino Livramento (left) and Kyle Walker-Peters (right) touch heatmaps v Aston Villa in Gameweek 11

As for Livramento, the 21.7% owned defender was benched by 474,600 FPL managers in Gameweek 11, despite now returning either a goal, assist or clean sheet in seven of his last eight appearances.

Elsewhere, In his pre-match interview Ralph Hasenhuttl confirmed that Nathan Redmond (£5.9m) was isolating, having tested positive for Covid.

“Nathan Redmond tested positive but is fine at home.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

ANOTHER DEFEAT FOR VILLA

After tonight’s loss, it’s now five defeats in a row for Dean Smith’s side, which has seen them drop to 15th in the table.

During that period, they have conceded 13 goals, which means only Newcastle United and Norwich City have a worse defensive record than Villa this season.

MOST PREMIER LEAGUE DEFEATS IN 2021:

Aston Villa18
Southampton18
Burnley17
Newcastle United17

As is stands, it does feel like this Villa defence is one to target in the coming weeks, especially given their ongoing issues defending set-pieces, which is something to keep in mind with Brighton and Hove Albion, Crystal Palace and Manchester City up next after the international break.

“They were the better team in the first half. We got them in at half-time and put it right. Bailey played down the middle and Buendia off the right and we looked a totally different team. We played with intensity in the second half. There was a response. You can’t question the character of the players. We have a few injuries. Some of our subs were academy graduates. I don’t like making excuses. We shouldn’t be losing five games on the spin. We can get some players back to fitness during the international break and come back stronger. You’d like a game in the next three or four days but we can’t.” – Dean Smith

Southampton XI: McCarthy, Livramento, Bednarek, Salisu, Walker-Peters, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Elyounoussi (Diallo 76), S Armstrong (Lyanco 56), Adams, A Armstrong (Broja 81)

Aston Villa XI: Martinez, Cash, Tuanzebe, Mings, Targett, Nakamba (J Ramsey 63), McGinn, Bailey, Buendia (Archer 71), El Ghazi (Davis 79), Watkins

When you’re delighted that Chilwell’s going to start but then you realise that your closest rival brought him in to add to his already double Chelsea defence.

However you do it, you're getting a premium player in.

As I've said on here before, if you're getting a premium player in then it almost always means you have to swap a premium player out.

So, it's pretty obvious that Ronaldo has to be the currency in that deal.

Once you've accepted that reality its really quite easy to see how to get Son.

It's when people try and shoehorn in another premium player without getting rid of any of the ones they already have that it becomes problematic.

Lundstram was a 5.0 defender playing attacking midfielder for a team known to have a strong defence.

Livramento is none of those things. Closer to Guy Demel

Quite like the look of switching to 352 with these moves:

Vardy + Mbeumo to Son + Jota to give:

    Sanchez, Steele
    TAA, Chilwell, Cancelo, Livra, White
    Salah, Son, Jota, Foden, Raph
    Jiminez, Antonio, 4.5

Only thing which would be a shame is to get rid of that premium striker spot though?

    1. FC Hakkebøf
      • 7 Years

      Prefer this team:

      Ramsdale
      TAA James Cancelo
      Salah Foden Jota Mbeumo
      Kane Antonio

11th player could then be Hwang, Chilwell or Armstrong

I could go down the Kane route and cheaper mids, but just think it looks a bit more balanced with Son? Essentially Kane / Mbeumo / Armstrong vs Son / Jiminez / Raph.

You don’t really need a starting 4.5 mid/striker if you have two playing defenders? Already having enough headaches with Livra/White’s bench points each week

        1. Hotdogs for Tea
          • 9 Years

For me I prefer the choice of three 4.5s like Livra, White, D Luiz that covers all bases and you can even start them if the fixtures are favourable. you can never start a non-starter 😉

Hwang will probably out score many of the 5 mids you go for.

Most with a shallow or poor bench go straight to hits rather than play their bench so If you go two players down you won't actually rely on your bench you will use a transfer, actually even with one player out you will looking at a transfer if your 4.5 defender is away to City, Chelsea or Pool.

          Good luck though

In terms of jota, by the time Bobby is back to full speed It could only be a few games until the afcon starts ?

So with that in mind jota could be a good option all the way through until long term

I am basing this off the assumption that he will take 6-10 weeks to come back from this injury

I own regardless and i dont like this Firmino injury (Liverpool fan here) but it may see him play more minutes over an extended period. But owning Jota in the period without mane and Salah, i am actually thinking that is a period you dont own Liverpool attackers maybe a 2 weeks pynt on the one of the likes of Minamino/origi if we get signals on which will play.

If Salah wasn't on a hot streak as he is on right now, rather than a possible double up, I'm pretty certain we'd have seen a few "can Jota cover Salah" posts on here.

Liverpool went 2-0 up inside 22 minutes and were happy play reactive football and keep 10 man Atletico at arms length from there onwards. Different ball game all together.

Love that everyone is selling Vardy. Brought him in on WC this week.

The sheep auto-picked him when Lukaku got injured even though he had 2 difficult fixtures coming up. He blanked, and now the sheep are selling when his plum fixtures are coming up. Yes please

Tut tut. Look closer, Rogers is playing two strikers again in which Iheanacho is more likely to haul than Vardy. The logic is 90% right but are backing the wrong horse

It feels wrong to target a player who's playing like dirt (Kane). And yet, my most likely moves over IB will be taking a hit to bring him in.
I really hope he shows some big improvements this weekend, maybe hits the woodwork a few times (don't really want him scoring when he's not in my team), is thoroughly involved and has a load of penalty area touches.

To be fair, I may still get him even if he looks rubbish again. He's Harry Kane, there's no way he continues playing like a Sunday League footballer through this run of fixtures... is there? 🙁
