Learning from ‘The Great and The Good’ FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 12

Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead continues with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this year are the Scouts Joe LepperNeale RiggGeoff Dance and Tom Freeman, FPL Wire’s Zophar, from the Hall of Fame Fabio BorgesFPLMatthewYavuz Kabuk and Tom Stephenson, Blackbox’s Az and Mark Sutherns, FPL “celebrities” LTFPL AndyMagnus Carlsen and FPL General plus last year’s mini-league winner Les Caldwell.

“Life is like a game, there are many players. If you don’t play with them, they’ll play with you.”

The FPL Squid Games continued with Dean Smith, Steve Bruce, Nuno Espirito Santo and Daniel Farke losing the managerial tug of war, a red light not a green light for our Brentford players and owners of Robert Sanchez (£4.6m) losing their marbles with his sending off.

In all the excitement, we have a new front man for The Great and The Good in Az, whilst others faced elimination due to VIP party spoilers Norwich and Burnley but who will be contestant number 456 and win the pig filled with cash?

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Az was the secret inspector in Gameweek 11 with an impressive 75 points which sees him reach the top of the table, thanks to an impressive defensive performance from the fabulous threesome of Joao Cancelo (£6.4m), Reece James (£5.9m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m).

The Blackbox host has also been canny in his purchase of Arsenal assets with Aaron Ramsdale (£4.7m) and Emile Smith-Rowe (£5.8m) delivering for him yet again, entering the top 10k for the first time this season.

Joe also scored a creditable 70 with his faith in Adam Armstrong (£5.9m) paying off, Geoff Dance was only a point behind thanks to his smart purchase of Conor Gallagher (£5.8m) – now the fifth-highest point scorer this season – and Yavuz is making a comeback by moving up 139,000 places. Could an eighth successive top 10k finish still be on?

A new game was introduced this week called ‘Bench Bother’, as members of The Great and The Good competed to leave as many points on the bench as possible, with an average of 18.1 between them.

FPL Matthew and FPL General shared the dishonour with 26 benched points as messers Ben Foster (£4.0m), Ben White (£4.4m) and Tino Livramento (£4.5m) ended up doing just fine whilst on their pine.

TRANSFERS

This is a summary of the transfers for this week :

Az – None

LTFPL Andy – None

Fabio Borges – Sanchez (Raya)

Joe Lepper – Chilwell (Christensen)

Geoff Dance – Toney, James (Antonio, Tierney)

FPL General – Son, White (Dias, Mount)

Les Caldwell – Smith-Rowe, Alexander-Arnold (Son, Alonso)

Magnus Carlsen – Toney (Antonio)

Mark Sutherns – None

FPL Matthew – None

Neale Rigg – None

Tom Freeman – Sanchez (Raya)

Tom Stephenson – Jota (Raphinha)

Yavuz Kabuk – None

Zophar – Jota (Raphinha)

The variance went against Tom Freeman and Fabio Borges who picked the wrong week to make a goalkeeper change, as Sanchez proved to be less than a safe pair of fans with his sending off, just as they brought him in for an injured David Raya (£4.5m).

Elsewhere, Les Caldwell continues his uncanny knack of timing his moves as he brought in the double-barrelled double-digit scoring Smith-Rowe and Alexander-Arnold.

TEMPLATE

The template for The Great and The Good is as follows with number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:-

Foster (11), Ramsdale/Sanchez (6)

Alexander-Arnold (14), Cancelo (13), Livramento (12), Rudiger/Chilwell/James (5)

Salah (15), Raphinha (12), Foden (10), Mbeumo (10), Brownhill (7)

Antonio (13), Toney (11), Vardy (10)

Some small tweaks to the template, with three Chelsea defenders scrapping it out for the fourth and fifth spot, Sanchez comes in but will probably go out again and it’s worth noting that the template forward line failed to score this weekend.

KING OF THE TRANSFER

A deep dive this week into the season transfer activity of The Great and The Good, showing not only the immediate success of the transfers but also the spread across their squads:

Andy and Magnus lead the way with some high-impact transfers, gaining 64 and 63 points respectively with their moves. We’ll move swiftly past how Mark’s trades have performed so far.

Midfield appears to be this season’s battleground for making advances in the rankings, as 40% of all moves have been in this position.

Defensive moves are of a similar number to forward switches and the importance of getting your back line right is backed up by the stat that three of the top five total scorers this campaign are defenders in the form of James, Alexander-Arnold and Cancelo.

CONCLUSION

A break for us, away from the FPL struggle, as we enter our final international break before entering the hectic festive season.

Already we have seen the requirement for a strong bench, as well as Salah’s domination of the captaincy debate leading to more funds being available elsewhere.

The rotation will only get worse, so best prepare and build your squads. However, also brace yourself for more lost points as there will undoubtedly be a high chance that the added squad depth will cause pain.

Anyway, that’s all from me for now and, remember, don’t have nightmares.

For those affected by any of the topics raised in the above article then you can find me here on Twitter.

I have Cancelo but want TAA and Son and have 2 FTs, so a similar position to you.

I'm doing one my two Chelsea defenders, Havertz and Vardy to TAA, Son, and Wilson -4.

TAA/Cancelo and Son you're gonna want and keep for a while, so i see no harm losing Vardy and taking the hit to get them locked in sooner rather than later.

Copied and pasted but a very interesting stat(s)

Against Everton, Spurs recorded their highest totals both for distance covered (110.9km) and high-intensity sprints (151) in any game this season, according to Premier League tracking data.

In fact, Spurs ran over 10 kilometres further against Everton than they did in Nuno's last game in charge against Manchester United. They ran over seven kilometres further than in any of the former Wolves manager's Premier League games in charge.

I need to free up fund for Ronaldo, also I have already done Rudiger to Cancelo before price rise..

Okay, now we're getting to my point: Reece is a bigger priority than strikers this season, because he's the league's leading club's main attack outlet, in every game, never instructed to sit back and defend even against big teams... Ya know, the exact reason you just got Cancelo

I'm very sure there are other routes to Ronaldo, probably by skinning your bench with FTs between now and GW16, and maybe downgrading Son in GW16 for someone with a greater fixture run: Bowen Gallagher ESR Mbeumo

Saw that on the eye test

But the problem is still creativity, especially down the middle. The wing backs got into good areas, seemingly without knowing what to do

That game needed Ndombele in a 3-5-2. I hope Conte sees that soon

Spurs don’t own the player that game needed.

Am I right in saying that their running / distance covered stats under Poch were generally always good but tailed off a lot towards the end of his reign too? I guess this lines up with Conte's desire for his squad to be as fit as possible and able to put in the work in every game with or without the ball.

I'm still undecided on whether to move Vardy to Kane or not. If Vardy had any form I'd hold at least for another week but he has a tendency to go on barren runs after good scoring runs and Leicester just aren't very convincing so I can't look at what seems a good fixture for them and feel confident they'd win.

Vardy has Watford at home next so not sure I can part with him just yet, for me it would be to either Kane (dbl up, very reluctant) or Ronaldo (15/16 most likely)

True and Watford were terrible on Sunday, I just feel like every time I look at a game that i think Leicester should do well in or that suits Vardy it doesn't play out that way, and vice versa. Cue Vardy scoring against Chelsea!

Thing with Vardy is when he’s playing in a 2 striker formation his points tend to get stolen and seeing B.Rodgers play 2 up front is putting me off

I've always liked Wilson, started the season with him and he was a steady stream of points even in a bad team, and he's now under a manager that got the best out of him (although that was with better attackers around him) so I think he's a good option, just be prepared for an injury at any stage as he rarely seems to last top long. But he's definitely on my mind too

The very well could but their defensive stats aren't anywhere near as good as last season, they're conceding a lot more shots on goal and expected goals conceded figure is a lot higher than what they've conceded. The upside of having them both could be great but could have some painful weeks too

Yes I’m aware of that stat. Mendy is definitely putting in work at the back but I really want two Chelsea attackers to capitalise on their stray and the Wingbacks seem the best way to go

Was all set to wildcard but have done Sanchez + Grealish > Guaita + Jota (-4) and don't think my team looks that bad. Would you still wildcard for the likes of Son/Kane?

    Guaita Foster

Havertz will likely lose his spot to Lukaku after International break.
Vardy and Toney also look like transfers out waiting to happen.

I'd WC and use the opportunity to also switch Rudiger to James/Reguillon.
Kane, Son, Foden, Raph, Gallagher all look like good options to get in. Could even switch to 451.

Tricky because that's not a bad team. A bit similar to mine and I'm also debating whether to WC or not from:

      (Sanchez), Foster
      TAA, Cancelo, Rudiger, Livra, (Veltman)
      Salah, Foden, Jota, ESR, (Raph)
      Antonio, Toney, (Ings)

The key question is whether Spurs are going to kick on - and if so, when. I'd WC mainly to get a CHE wingback (or 2), sort out Ings (Wilson) and probably get Son, while downgrading the 5th mid to avoid bencing headaches. However, foden and Livra could both punish me short term if I do and my starting XI this week is fine. I could just do Rudi->Chilwell and it looks pretty good, I think - just like yours!

      Similar position myself.

Vardy and Havertz will give you around 19.0 to spend on a Spurs premium and a mid price midfielder/forward.

Or you could just do Havertz to Jota and assess for gw13. Vardy has Watford at home so you'll have a good option there already plus 2 FTs to use elsewhere if needed

The lack of good FPL forward options has made me go 352 or 442...

Only antonio and jimi are worth owning imo... lots of great mid options so why not pick them instead?

    Your thoughts?

Started with 442, wildcarded to 3 up top, but am now looking to go back to 2 up top.

There really is a poor selection of forwards to choose from and there's far more value in defenders and low to mid price midfielders

It does seem like that at the moment. Wilson may come good with Howe around. I've been quite happy having an injured Ings sat on the bench the past few weeks. Don't feel like I'm missing out on much...

There are no starting 4.5 forwards but plenty of 4.5 starting mids .. why tie your hands behind your back with only 12 outfield players ?

It seems that way. Yet here I am sat with Ronaldo, Vardy and Antonio.

May as well keep Ronaldo and Vardy now given their upcoming fixtures. Hopefully the tide will turn.

2FT and 0.2m in the bank, any suggestions on what to do here? Would like to move Gray on, but feel like if I did Gray > Gallagher, i'd have a bench headache every week?

    Sanchez
    TAA - Rudiger - Cancelo - Chilwell
    Salah - Son - ESR
    Antonio - Vardy - Toney

    Steele - Gray - Livra - Sissoko

Maybe the obvious move for next gw is Vardy to Kane. I know Kane is out of scoring but think hr will improve himself and is the best placeholder for Ronaldo in gw16??

Just get Dennis or Benteke, they can cover him, even from the bench.

Barring injuries over the IB I'm pretty set on this WC squad:

    Guaita, Gunnarsson
    James, TAA, Cancelo, Chilwell, Livramento
    Salah, Fornals, Foden, Gallagher, ESR
    Kane, Wilson, Davis
    .1 ITB

Couldn't quite get to Bowen so Fornals will have to do, and the forward picks feel a bit 'punty' but having owned Antonio and Jiminez for most of the season it's time for a change...

MY only comment would be is Fornals/WHU mid a priority in your WC team when you look at their short term fixtures

I think he was just the best option for 6.1m or under, they do seem to be scoring goals against most teams at the moment and his stats are good. Open to suggestions though as it's a tricky spot to fill.

Probably not a priority transfer out in that case but it does depend on your transfers e.g. I would sell to Son
