Who’s leading the Premier League xG and xA tables?

As we have reached the winter break, here, we take a look at this season’s Premier League expected goals (xG) and expected assists (xA) per 90 minutes leaders.

To nobody’s surprise, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m) rank highly, but the data does also reveal some more interesting names, which we’ll explore below.

Note: the following lists only contains players who have featured for a minimum of 450 Premier League minutes in the 2021/22 season.

All stats in this piece come from our Premium Members Area, where there is currently a free trial.

This article harnesses our ‘per 90’ filter, which you can learn more about here.

xG PER 90

Five-time top 1k FPL finisher Tom Freeman on Calvert-Lewin, Wolves and his Gameweek 2 plans 6
PlayerMinutesxG per 90
Dominic Calvert-Lewin5180.79
Mohamed Salah17830.70
Diogo Jota15410.65
Cristiano Ronaldo14560.60
Patson Daka4500.58

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m), who has three Premier League goals to his name this season, is ahead of all other players for xG per 90. However, his 0.79 tally is boosted after being handed three penalties across his six appearances, which notably, he may no longer be on, having missed from the spot against Brighton and Hove Albion in Gameweek 21.

Elsewhere, two Liverpool midfielders appear – Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota (£8.4m) – with 0.70 and 0.65 xG per 90 respectively, whilst Cristiano Ronaldo features below, having registered a whopping 63 shots since re-joining Manchester United, more than all players bar Salah.

Patson Daka’s (£7.1m) inclusion in fifth is particularly interesting, despite limited minutes which should, of course, be taken into account. Across his nine Premier League appearances in 2021/22, the 23-year-old has produced four goals and three assists, averaging 4.8 points per match.

Jamie Vardy’s (£10.3m) hamstring injury is expected to keep him out until March, although Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.9m) is back from Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) duty, suggesting we could see a bit of rotation up front, especially given Leicester City’s schedule, which includes Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Europa Conference League games in February.

xA PER 90

FPL Gameweek 17 round-up: Thursday review, injury news and the things we learned
PlayerMinutesxA per 90
Trent Alexander-Arnold17730.43
Michael Olise4810.36
Riyad Mahrez8390.30
Mason Mount14330.29
Ashley Westwood14200.23

Trent Alexander-Arnold is out in front with 0.43 xA per 90, which has translated into 10 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) assists, a tally only Jarrod Bowen (£6.9m) can beat, with 12.

Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise (£5.4m) also features, having impressed despite playing for just 481 minutes. The youngster has produced two goals and three assists during that time, all from the bench, we should add, highlighting his potential when handed game-time.

Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m) could come back onto the FPL radar after the winter break, having been handed a decent rest following his AFCON involvement, though Mason Mount (£7.6m) is seeing huge sales, with three blanks scheduled in the next four Gameweeks.

Ashley Westwood (£5.3m) is a surprise entry in fifth, especially given that Burnley have four games that still need to be rescheduled. However, his lack of goal threat – the midfielder has taken just four shots in the box all season – suggests there are better options available, despite his budget price tag.

    Woud you WC that team?

    Ramsdale
    TAA Cancelo Coufal Reguilon
    Foden Jota Bowen
    CR7 King Watkins

    Foster Rudy Trossard Gilmour

Not an awful team but really want
De Gea, Digne, Bruno, KDB, Robo snd Gallagher

Probably not. If you've got 2FT and some funds you can probably get close to all of them with no more than a hit or two.

You'll face same question as me though - do you downgrade CR7 before the double?

I would downgrade CR7 if it means you can have Bruno without getting rid of key players. Also enables that easy transfer to Salah without hits (assuming you got a little more left in the bank).

I could actually get one of Bruno or KDB this week for free with spare funds.

The other would need a downgrade of CR7 (and possibly a hit this or next week)

My planned moves (if all is well).
GW24: Save FT (my starting eleven has good fixtures)
GW25: Moura, Ronaldo --> Bruno, Broja
    GW26: Jota --> Salah
    GW28: possibly Bruno --> KDB

Eh? It's not grammar or English, it's just a boring repetitive cliche that ceased being smart and sassy absolutely ages ago, and that was a very brief moment anyway

Not sure myself finding the 'so-and-so says hi' trope highly repetitive and dull constitutes it being either grammar or English language police, but fine if you just want to lash out with another well-worn cliche with the old 'Swahili'.

I actually would tbh, Tierney v Wolves is starting for me, Gray has a good fixture and I expect Everton to be fairly attacking under Lampard, and Coufal might be in a leaky defence but the likelihood is under Hodgson Watford will try to play for a draw in games against teams as dangerous as West Ham so he could well get a clean sheet.

I wouldn’t really care about the 3rd place play off to be honest

I honestly can’t even tell you if England won or lost the one they played a couple of years ago

Third place playoffs are dead rubbers. Two losers forced to hang around and work out who is the better loser.

And I mean this whether it's the World Cup, European Championship or AFCON.

That said, I can't see Mo getting a pass

      Eh?

Other than the Olympics, purely because of a medal, I don't think many people care about any form of 3rd place play off.

We don't care about it, but telling Africa that their tournament doesn't matter and they should release their players early is quite arrogant and we wouldn't like it if Africa told us to end the Euros early.

While I do think most people are derogatory towards AFCON (the fact some European leagues decided to send a letter saying they weren't going to send their players due to covid but playing the Euros last summer was fine says enough) but I literally couldn't care less about a third place playoff and the difference between that and 4th place.

Wanted to bring in Kane on WC (if I decided to go that route) but think I'm closer to not using it now. But forgot I have the funds to easily bring in Son this week so that's an interesting question. Goodness knows what my team will look like in 10 days' time

I've been fixed on choosing Kane on my WC. I feel like he's passed the eye test but he's also got Wolves/City in the next 3.

Reckon Ronaldo is worth the punt instead?

I wouldn't bring in Ronaldo and I'm an owner. No value in strikers at the moment. I think there are 25 defenders and mids currently outscoring Ronaldo (who is the third highest scoring striker)

I've seen a lot selling Kane but I'm in agreement, he's looked very good and hungry of late, and the new signings may help push him on more. Tough fixtures though for sure, but even taking into account I think I'd prefer to take a chance on Kane over Ronaldo.

Agh, I wrote a long post but it didn't save. Long story short, tough one as Son is generally reliable, but Kane has looked similar to what he was like at times last season of late and has been unlucky not to score more (especially the EFL Cup games). I hate the "he's due" mentality but I genuinely think he's going to have a big score in one of the weeks coming up. No EL and lots of fixtures to be rearranged too so I think one of the two is certainly worth going for.

Yeah, across recent years (pre-Bruno), I'd religiously not have any United plays in my team.

The Ronaldo in was more just to capitalise on their next 5 games, after GW28 they won't be back in.

I think immediate returns for Kane will be tough especially against Wolves city and not having Son.
Longer term he might be the better option as Spurs don't have Europe and Ronaldo might get the odd rest with UCL etc

        I'm hearing this a lot.
What is the rule, why is it so bad, what is the alternative, and is this just a hipster opinion (as I see people just repeating other people's views, almost verbatim, to look as though they know, as ever)?
Genuine questions, anyone who actually knows, with any authority.

Essentially, If you lose the coin toss and the other team score a touchdown you go home without having a chance on offence with the football. The rest of your questions pretty much answer themselves I think. Anyway, delighted for Burrow and his Bengals against all odds

So the coin-toss team gets a drive (and probably gets a field goal minimum?), rather than both getting a drive?

Yes. A field goal and the other team get a chance but a TD ends the game. Also if the defending team score from an interception or fumble return the game is over

GW24: Save FT (my starting eleven has good fixtures)
GW25: Moura, Ronaldo --> Bruno, Broja
