Early team news and injury updates for FPL Gameweek 38

We’ve got the early team and injury news for all 20 top-flight clubs ahead of the final Gameweek of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season.

It will be updated after the midweek Premier League matches on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the press conference round-up on Friday superseding it.

For more information, check out our Predicted Line-ups page and Injuries and Bans feed.

ARSENAL

Kieran Tierney (knee) and Thomas Partey (thigh) look set to miss the rest of the season, while the injury-prone Takehiro Tomiyasu will need a muscle problem assessed after limping out of Monday’s damaging 2-0 defeat at Newcastle.

Rob Holding returns from suspension in Gameweek 38, however.

ASTON VILLA

Kortney Hause (abdomen) remains on the sidelines for Aston Villa, who lost Ezri Konsa to a knee injury on Sunday; Steven Gerrard confirmed on Wednesday that he will be out for up to 16 weeks.

The Villa boss had previously said that he thinks Leon Bailey (ankle) will feature again before 2021/22 draws to a close, while Emi Martinez is hoping to be fit to face Burnley on Thursday despite reporting a “small issue”.

BRENTFORD

Saman Ghoddos (ankle), Ethan Pinnock (hamstring), Zanka (muscle) and Frank Onyeka (ankle) were all on the sidelines for the win over Everton but all bar Zanka of that contingent has a chance of recovering for Gameweek 38.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION

Jakub Moder (knee) is out for the season but Jeremy Sarmiento (hamstring) and Enock Mwepu (groin) could be in contention for the final day, having been back on the grass in the last week.

BURNLEY

Johann Berg Gudmundsson (calf), Ashley Westwood (ankle) and Matej Vydra (knee) have season-ending injuries but James Tarkowski (hamstring) and Jay Rodriguez (hamstring) have a chance of recovering for Thursday’s match against Aston Villa. Ben Mee (knee) is slightly behind in his recovery.

Erik Pieters and Dale Stephens missed the narrow loss to Spurs as a precaution.

CHELSEA

Callum Hudson-Odoi (Achilles/back) and Ben Chilwell (knee) are still out, while Kai Havertz (hamstring), Timo Werner (hamstring) and Andreas Christensen (unknown) all didn’t play a part in the FA Cup final, having either pulled out of the squad before the game or, in Werner’s case, aggravated a muscle problem while on substitute duty.

Werner and Christensen won’t be back for Thursday, while Havertz is still a “big question mark” after only just returning to team training in midweek.

Mateo Kovacic (ankle) is also unlikely to face Leicester.

CRYSTAL PALACE

Nathan Ferguson (muscle/match fitness) and Michael Olise (calf) won’t feature again this season, while James McArthur and James Tomkins won’t recover from unspecified issues in time to face Everton on Thursday.

Vicente Guaita was fit enough for a place among the substitutes against Villa after missing out in Gameweek 36.

EVERTON

Salomon Rondon (suspension), Andros Townsend (knee) and Nathan Patterson (ankle) are out for the season, while a Gameweek 38 appearance is probably the best that Yerry Mina (calf) and Fabian Delph (muscle) can hope for.

Donny van de Beek (groin), Ben Godfrey (thigh) and Michael Keane (illness) are all back in the squad, at least, while Jarrad Branthwaite will return on the final day after serving a one-game ban against Crystal Palace in midweek.

LEEDS UNITED

Crysencio Summerville (ankle), Stuart Dallas (leg), Adam Forshaw (knee) and Tyler Roberts (hamstring) are out for the season but Patrick Bamford (foot) could feature in Gameweek 38 after a recent return to training.

Luke Ayling and Daniel James will miss the run-in after being sent off in the last three matches, however.

LEICESTER CITY

Wilfred Ndidi (knee) and Ryan Bertrand (knee) remain out for the long term, while Hamza Choudhury (groin) probably won’t feature again in 2021/22.

Brendan Rodgers said ahead of the midweek clash with Chelsea that Youri Tielemans was a doubt after a clash of knees, while Ricardo Pereira‘s (hamstring) fitness will be assessed after a return to training.

Rodgers also confirmed that Kasper Schmeichel would start the final two matches of the season.

Nampalys Mendy was substituted because of illness in the 5-1 win over Watford but should be fine to return at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, while Jonny Evans was merely withdrawn because of fatigue.

LIVERPOOL

Fabinho (thigh), Mohamed Salah (muscle) and Virgil van Dijk (groin) missed the trip to Southampton in midweek but Jurgen Klopp is hopeful that Salah and van Dijk can play a part in the Gameweek 38 clash with Wolves, whether that be from the start or as a substitute.

MANCHESTER CITY

Kyle Walker (ankle), John Stones (muscle) and Ruben Dias (muscle) are all out for the season but Aymeric Laporte (knock) and Fernandinho (muscle) returned from injury – if looking somewhat half-fit – in the two-all draw with West Ham on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola explained recently that Nathan Ake, an unused substitute in east London, was playing through an ankle niggle of late and isn’t fully fit himself.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Last we heard from Ralf Rangnick nearly a fortnight ago, Paul Pogba (calf), Luke Shaw (leg) and Jadon Sancho (tonsillitis) were facing a fight to be fit before the end of the season.

Sancho and Shaw have since been spotted in training alongside Marcus Rashford (bronchitis) and Eric Bailly (back), who had missed the 4-0 defeat at Brighton.

NEWCASTLE UNITED

Chris Wood (hip) and Javier Manquillo (chickenpox) missed Monday’s win over Arsenal but Eddie Howe is hopeful of having the former back for the trip to Burnley this weekend.

Fabian Schar was substituted with a head injury in that victory over the Gunners.

The seasons of Jonjo Shelvey (calf) and Joe Willock (knee) are over.

NORWICH CITY

Ozan Kabak (hamstring), Adam Idah (ankle/knee), Andrew Omobamidele (back), Christoph Zimmermann (hip), Kenny McLean (toe) and Josh Sargent (ankle) are all likely to be out for the season, while Mathias Normann – who had only just returned from a thigh injury on Sunday – and Billy Gilmour picked up ankle knocks in the draw with Wolves.

SOUTHAMPTON

Tino Livramento (knee) is out for the rest of 2022, while Romain Perraud will now be sidelined for up to six weeks with a leg fracture.

Fraser Forster (back) missed Tuesday’s clash with Liverpool, meanwhile, with his manager unsure as to whether he’ll be back for Gameweek 38.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Dejan Kulusevski was only a substitute in Sunday’s win over Burnley, with Antonio Conte revealing after full-time that the Swede had been one of four players affected by a stomach bug in the run-up to Gameweek 37.

Matt Doherty (knee), Oliver Skipp (groin), Sergio Reguilon (hamstring), Sergio Romero (hip) and Japhet Tanganga (knee) are all out until the end of the season.

WATFORD

The campaigns of Imrân Louza (knee) and Juraj Kucka (knee) are definitely over, while Roy Hodgson has recently cast doubt over whether Emmanuel Dennis (knee) and Ismaila Sarr (knee) will feature again this season, meanwhile.

Cucho Hernandez (hamstring) was back on the grass ahead of the relegation-confirming loss at Selhurst Park but hasn’t featured in action since, while news is awaited on the groin tweak that forced Samir out of the line-up against Leicester.

Joshua King (illness), Nicolas Nkoulou (groin), Kiko Femenia (illness) and Tom Cleverley (ribs) are possibilities to feature in Gameweek 38.

WEST HAM UNITED

Angelo Ogbonna (knee) and Said Benrahma (ankle) were the only West Ham players missing in Gameweek 37, with the latter at least back doing some light jogging.

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS

Max Kilman (muscle) and Nelson Semedo (hamstring) are out until August but there has been no word about the recovery of Romain Saiss (knock), who is set to leave Wolves at the end of this season.

If Salah is out GW38 would you do the following moves for a - 4?

    Salah & Dennis > Diaz & Vardy?

Obviously these transfers would be done after this DGW finishes.

    Cheers

Of course, you wouldn't want last GW to have13 millions sitting on your bench.

Any combo is better than having Salah on the bench. Depending on the remaining of the games this GW and news before deadline, I planned Salah and Richarlison to Son and Vardy.

Like the moves. Do you think Vardy starts 3 games in a week? Assuming he starts vs chelsea

I believe his minutes against Chelsea will be managed - if not, I'll might reconsider Vardy option.

What is the likely Aston Villa front line vs Burnley?

As an Ings captainer slightly worried. But logic says Coutinho and Watkins more likely to get rest before man city.

    My Guess is

    Traore Ings Buendia
    Ramsey Nakamba McGinn

    Thoughts are welcomed.

Surely Gerrard priority is to have his side fresh for man city game to give liverpool chance of winning league no?

Plus not sure Coutinho plays 3 times in a week plus Watkins is due a rest especially after a knock previous gw.

could happen but if i were a villa fan i'd be very upset if his priority is to help other teams.

I think that goes hand in hand with villa being a club starting to build a project. While i think Gerrard would love to help Liverpool i think his main goal is to help Villa improve and get closer to top 6. Part of that is to close the gap and ti do that you need to practice and fight vs the best teams.

Totally agree with you on Villa priorities. Think the Burnley game will see rotation - thats why I avoided Ings on FH. If Watkins is fully recovered, I think Ings sits this one out (3 games in a week no problem for Ollie). If not quite fit, then I guess Ings starts again. Expect Bailey to play if fit

Ings was really poor on Saturday so I wouldn't be surprised if Gerrard reverts back to a 451 with Watkins up front. Matt Cash is more of a concern - looked to be struggling towards the end of the game.

In any event Gerrard wants a top half finish so I fully expect him to put out his strongest possible 11 for the Burnley game.

On the final day, which one are you?

    Pre-match

    A) Lock in team early and forget about it

    B) Frantically refreshing twitter/forums right up to deadline in the hope of early team news. Swap captain and bench players 800 times.

    During the match

    A) Watch 1 game (or the TV coverage). Phone on other side of room. Rely on updates from commentators. Only look at points and rank post-game.

    B) Watch 4 games at a time with notifications on all the others. When a goal goes in, you need to know who assisted it. Refresh Live FPL every 30 seconds.

    Post-match

    A) Check points and rank. Wait for all MLs to update. Spend about 5 mins reflecting on the season and what went wrong. Log off and return in July.

    B) Start posting RMTs for next season

      Pre-Match : B

During the Match : I keep switching the games depending on how it is going and whether stream is working properly or not. Google score for remaining games.

Post-match : Check the arrow, final rank and just log off

Pre match: mostly A. Hate last-minute tinkering on the basis of rumours. But I'll probably drop by for a little bit.

During: B. Will watch the Leeds game, but definitely want to keep an eye on City/Liv & my FPL pts.

Post: dont know yet! (1st season of FPL this year). Probably take a few weeks off then start working on a team for next season a couple weeks before kickoff

        Post Match A

Next day after matches is B haha

Tough one, I have Toney and am hoping to get Bowen in too! Bowen is in great form and is against a team in better form but that is still conceding chances. Toney hasn't been picking up loads of points lately and is up against a team that will be fighting to stay in the division but that are conceding too many chances. He's also been getting a lot of stick from Leeds fans of late (after he poked fun at them celebrating promotion a few years back saying "Thomas Frank mind the gap") and I think he'd love to be the one to relegate them. Think I'd just lean Toney but really it could go either way

Saw some posts regarding Gerrard planning to put weaker line up in order to put a strong line up against city for the pool connection. Why would villa management allow Gerrard to do that?? Surely those things won't be in their mind I guess apart from our guess.

Only 3 days before City, which they obviously want to put their strongest side out for in the hope of an upset that could give Liverpool the title. Nothing else to play for, perfect opportunity to give guys like Bailey a run out

'that could give pool the title ' that is what I am asking why would they give pool the title. Makes no sense at all.

I've seen this, and can only assume its rubbish. Gerrard is a professional football manager, anyone who thinks he will "try" to beat city more just to help Liverpool are talking nonsense, and its a bit disrespectful towards Gerrard.

I'm sure alot of managers have affiliations to clubs they have played for or supported, but they shouldn't be in the job if they will let those impact your team decisions.

Blackburn needed to win vs Liverpool back in 95 if Man Utd beat West Ham, and you didnt see Liverpool roll over just because they wanted to give Blackburn a helping hand.

These are professional sports people! Would Gerrard prefer Liverpool to win the league, off course, but I don't see it impacting his choices in his capacity as Villa manager, he will want to win both games for his club.

Agree with the above. I laughed when I seen talk of Villa potentially rolling over before they played Liverpool purely because Gerrard is manager.

He'll obviously want Liverpool to win the title but his priority is Villa.

No one said "roll over" - in fact, I argued specifically against people claiming Villa would roll over for Liverpool last week. Just some rotation of the front 3 in a dead rubber

This is how my team will line up if I move Salah to Son as planned.

    Schmeichel
    TAA - Robbo - Cancelo - Alonso - Davies
    Son - Kdb - Kulu - Mount
    Richarlison
    Foster - Pukki - Elanga - Dennis

Whats best -4 with biggest upside - 2.2m itb before any further son/salah price moves?

    A) Davies -> James
    B) Something else?!
    C) Stick with the team, forget the -4 and leave 2.2 itb.

      • 10 Years

usually lots of goals in the last round, so might not get clean sheets
      but your defenders might score

not crazy about Richarlison in this fixture, but Vardy is out of reach
unless you are looking to take over a ML lead, you should probably stick, although if I knew James would start at wing back, I would get him

Another option is getting Diaz, but you have no clear path unless you take two hits, which is not worth it for me

yeah, i know there are usually alot of goals and crazy results, but I am where I am with the team structure!

At least they are all attacking players, and pool/city pushing for title, might make more tight that usually would be on final day, who knows!

    2. jason_ni

Elanga to Maddison I can afford, which could pay off on -4.

ML is very close, I was 90 behind before 36 started, and KDB capt, and FH with Vardy and Maddison has put me 30 in lead as it stands, but he has his double pool defence tonight, so could all change before the end of the GW!

      1. nolard
        • 10 Years

        Right.
Going to be a bit down to both your captain choices then for GW 38. Exciting.

From your rival's perspective, he would probably take a slight risk with the captain, and one differential which is out of your reach.

I would probably not do more than one hit with that buffer lead.
Both the move to James and the one for Maddison are good. Perhaps the one for Maddison is better as you have Alonso already, and James can sometimes play as a CB.

        Who will you captain?

Still not sure, prob either son or kdb.

He will likely capt kane as its the one player I can't reach without a hit, so if thats the case, son is safer, kind of covering kane, vs kdb is just another hail mary, and if it works would just extend the gap more!

Can only hope my remaining doublers extend the gap, and give me a bit more buffer!

Thanks a lot Saka…..with 2 points from the bench…..I really regret not doing the Leicester -8 which I was eyeing up on Sunday morning - Salah>Maddison, Elanga>Barnes, Nketiah>Vardy…….would have wrapped up my ML! Now it’s going down to the wire!

Boring question, but would anyone consider starting Dubravka over Ederson?

Already have Cancelo, and City have looked ropey defensively recently so not sure I'm still keen on the double up. Newcastle don't seem to concede many against the bottom teams these days.
