FPL new signings: Pope to further improve Newcastle defence

One of the most popular Fantasy Premier League (FPL) goalkeepers of the last five seasons could be back on the watchlist in 2022/23 after a move to ambitious Newcastle United.

The Magpies have already secured the permanent addition of half-season loanee Matt Targett and now 30-year-old goalkeeper Nick Pope has joined the Magpies in a deal believed to be worth £10m.

Let’s assess the shot-stopper’s 2022/23 prospects in this Moving Target report.

THE FPL HISTORY

After narrowly escaping relegation two seasons ago, Pope’s heroics weren’t able to stop Burnley dropping this time. Despite their demise, the Clarets had the league’s tenth-best defence in terms of both clean sheets and goals conceded.

SeasonAppearancesClean SheetsGoals ConcededFPL Points
2021/2236947130
2020/21321137144
2019/20381550170
2017/18351135152

In fact, Pope has ranked in the top six for saves in each of his four Premier League campaigns, reacting from a slow start to his career to become an established goalkeeper and England international.

Beginning at Charlton Athletic, he wasn’t a regular starter until 2015/16 but did enough to impress then Burnley boss Sean Dyche. He was signed as back-up to Tom Heaton and made his top-flight debut aged 25, replacing the injured Heaton during a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

From then on, it was his shirt to lose, with the team ending 2017/18 amongst the league’s best for clean sheets (seventh) and goals conceded (sixth). Although a serious shoulder injury ruled him out of the following season, Pope bounced back to become the top-scoring FPL stopper of 2019/20.

His 15 clean sheets and 170 points led to a top-half finish and a spot in the PFA Team of the Year. Whilst the team slowly regressed from this, Pope’s star performances remained crucial to the point where he has subsequently collected eight England caps.

1 and 3. Brighton might be a bit of an unknown with no Bissouma considering their poor record without him last season, but you know how a side under Potter will try to play. Wolves were very poor in the second half of last season and not really any sign of them improving the side yet

Affordable on Live fpl pricing but probably not once game reopens but an attempt at Salah Haaland Jesus TAA and Cancelo in team looks ok I think. Can always find 1m with Robertson over TAA and another 1m or .5 dropping Cash or Targett to 4.5

I dont think he will, Saka is the most nailed based on minutes played
Martinelli plays on the left and will rotate with ESR
Jesus will be St rotating with nketiah
Dont think arsenal will sign raph

Odegaard played every minute of the last 10 games and got 32 starts over the season - also it is very likely he will become captain this year. If I have the spare cash I will go for Saka but I think I can use the extra cash better elsewhere

I think its the process of tinkering which is fun in itself even if you dont get to put the team into practice (of matches). Especially since all the transfer activity at the moment creates a constant refreshment of the player pool so you can try out new combinations frequently. No one is really trying to nail down their GW1 team right now as such - its not about the end point, its all about the process.

Yes, ideal partner for Fred in the double pivot.

De Jong didn't play as well as an 8 at Barca, he says he prefers a deeper role progressing the ball from defence.

“I like to be the first player to receive the ball from the defenders. […] In the national team I play differently compared to Barça. And I think this one fits me better.”

        Ten Hag agrees: https://www.teamtalk.com/news/frenkie-de-jong-playing-in-wrong-position-says-ajax-boss

Question do others agree that Trent, Salah and Haaland (assuming he’s most expensive FWD) are must haves GW1. Not just because of good early fixtures but owning the most expensive player in each position means that if you really need to you can reach an outfield player in just one move.

Seeing a lot of early drafts going super big at the back and whilst as 15 individuals I get it and the teams look good I think it makes squads very inflexible and makes an early WC highly likely imo.

I have 5 at the back but with both Salah and Haaland so covers your point around having the most expensive in each position. Granted in 541 takes two moves to bring in a second striker in which case 532 should allow for the flexibility your refer to

When you say 5 at the back - how many premiums?

Looking at likely price points I think it’s worth having a 7.5m FWD and 2 8mish MIDs - which means sacrificing some premium DEFs?

Fair enough but in that case as you say it’s either 2 4.5 FWDs that give you not much flexibility or bench support or a 5-3-2 where you have a very cheap MID playing every week a very little price flexibility in midfield.

For my personal approach it just isn’t flexible enough.

Look at someone like Mahrez - 4 of his returns were from cameo appearances and has the ability haul when he does start. This outscores a lot of 90 min men over the season.

Anyway are we really saying Haaland is a real rotation risk - I agree he might get subbed off a lot but surely he starts most games he’s fit for like a KDB does.

I may be wrong but Salah really hasnt filled me with any confidence that he will score lots of points next season. Hasn’t been the same player since AFCON and that is coming from a Liverpool fan. Can see a lot more value in having Dias instead and then get a different premium to Salah. KDB maybe.

I know what you mean (fyi also a Liverpool fan) but Salah typically starts strong and he has great fixtures. And I guess you kinda confirm my point. If Salah starts poorly then you can straight swap to KDB but if KDB starts poorly you wouldn’t be able to straight swap to Salah - that’s exactly my point about owning the most expensive player.

    4. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 4 Years
      2 years, 4 months ago

I don't agree. Yes it is certainly a helpful situation to be in in terms of being able to move to any other player in one move, but there are a few different things to consider. One is value, and whether you think say TAA will provide worthwhile ppm at something like 8.5m relative to what someone like maybe VVD or Chilwell would at something like 6.5. Picking the most expensive assets may be worthwhile of course because of expected output, but are they providing enough value considering the limitations that places on the rest of your choices? The second thing is a lot more simple, if Salah blanks in GW1+2 while say Sterling picks up returns in both weeks, are you really going to drop someone like him that fast? I don't think it's really going to be the case, same for TAA. (Also for the record I'm not convinced Haaland will definitely be the highest priced forward, Kane was 12.5 last year and ended up the highest scoring forward despite being anonymous for about 24 weeks. Says a lot aboit forwards last season of course but also about how well he played once Spurs picked up their performances anf clicked under Conte.)

Sorry to labour the point but realised an example makes my point better than I have.

Currently none of the 7.5 FWDs inspire me too much, and I’d rather have another premium defender if I was picking a 15 for the whole season.

But there’s likely to be loads of them so likelihood is that very quickly I’ll want at least one of them. So I’d rather build in that space now - and guess at which one it’ll be - rather than building up a restructuring headache for myself after a couple of GWs.

I both take the point and disagree at the same time.

Yes it can’t be viewed in isolation but Trent, Salah and Haaland have the early fixtures as well.

My point is that we are all going to get our squads wrong and will need flexibility to make corrections. That’s why I look at price points that have multiple viable options and make sure I have them covered, so I want two 8m MIDs given the range of 7-8.5m options and a 7.5 FWD.

I predict the majority of very early wildcards from interested players will be from those who have go big at the back and realised they have priced themselves out of the medium price players that show great value.

        Btw agreed on Kane.

On the ppm point specifically. As a mathematician I love that sort of analysis but in truth I think it’s value is overstated.

In practice even if we don’t wildcard by GW6 our squads will look very different to what we currently expect - they literally ALWAYS do. So sample size will be small on relative returns between two players so variance will likely be big enough that small differences in expected ppm don’t matter.

Or more simply put I value flexibility to correct inevitable mistakes much higher than differences in my expectations of ppm for a GW1 squad.

I don't agree with this, for the simple reason that the super premiums are not the players that I want to sell/rotate only a couple matches into the season. Maybe you can make an exception for Håland as a newcomer (bail if he clearly needs more time to settle), but with the likes of Son/Robbo, I'm not going to ditch them just because Salah or Trent outscored them in 1 or 2 GWs.

I'd rather build in some squad flexibility in, say, the 6.5 - 7.5m midfielder spot(s) - that's the sweet spot for rotating according to fixtures imo.

I see your point although I still think there’s an argument there. The likes of Son and Salah and both capable of showing themselves to be necessary picks, difference is you can get straight from Salah to Son but not vice versa.

I think my stronger point is the second one, I feel people are notably understating how inflexible big at the back is.

Yeah ok I do agree that you dont want to get into a position of needing sell premium defenders to rebalance / fund mid-price midfielders. I personally like to have a 4.5m defender as a strong 1st sub to cover short-term injuries, so I tend to hold back from the full on big 5 at the back strategy anyway in favour of 3-4 premiums + 1-2 4.5s

You don't have to go big at the back though, I think once the game launches most that have that idea will move on from it when they realise how many options it will lock themselves out of. 4/4.5 defs are always key throughout the season for flexibility and value.

A starting £4.0 defender is the only think that would stop me from going premium 5 at the back. Won't be concerning myself with selling/rotation as they will all be set and forget. Save my transfers for the midfield or for upside chasing.

    Raya 4.0
    Matip Cash Davies Tomiyasu 4.0
Salah Son Eriksen Bruno G 4.5
    Haaland Jesus 4.5

I think its not looking too bad.

A mathematician hey. I suppose it gets down to which combo will score more - for me Salah, Son, Matip, Haaland, Jesus & TAA would be season keepers (assuming they go like last season) forming the spine of the team and FT would be used else where.

Depends if they are balling more than Salah, Son, Jesus & Haaland. If Jesus flops, I could move the funds to mid in 2 moves for Diaz & Jota and or swap for Nunez for example.

Also those 6 of likely to be at least £58m of your budget. So that’s £42m left for 9 players which doesn’t give you much flexibility at all.

But you wouldn’t have any budget for mid priced gems.

              Let’s say those 6 are £58m.

The minimum you can spend on the bench is £17m.

So that’s £25m for your other 5 starting players.

Thats why I have sacrificed TAA for Matip

                4.5 - 4
                6 - 5.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4
                13 - 11.5 - 6 - 6 - 4.5
                12 - 9 - 4.5
                0.5itb

Really looking for the 6 to 6.5 mid field gems to appear, so not as flexible as I would like, but there are some options.

So this is why I’d sacrifice Son not Trent. Combo of Trent and Kulu would give you an extra £1m or so and currently you have no way of getting to Trent, Robbo, James, Cancelo etc in one move. Also most of the weeks you might captain Son, Salah is also a good option.

I just googled Morgan Gibbs-White. He scored 11 goals last season, on loan at Sheff United. I don't think any other midfield promotee can match that (apart from Johnson but he'll likely be a forward). If MGW is sold to Forest and is 4.5m, he's a sure-fire 5th mid option.
They're also going for Neco Williams - currently a 4.5 defender.

Those of us who follow football outside of the EPL know how good he was in the Championship last season. Highly unlikely to be as cheap as £4.5M if at Forest .

I punted on MGW in 2018 and saw his potential back then.
As a Bristol City fan, I've seen him a couple of times in the Championship and he's class.

I actually think he's the kind of player FPL may price as a £4.5m without giving it much thought. But only if he's bench fodder for Wolves, not if he's made a move elsewhere.

This is why I am keen for the game to launch. Not to get a good ID, or to see prices, or even to draft a squad, but because, the longer the game waits and the more transfers go through, the fewer potential bargains we'll be able to grab by players moving between clubs.
We've already seen players like Bissouma, Jesus, even Fredericks/Bazunu move between clubs where their price will now be higher because of either the role they'll play or the club they've gone to.

Sooner the game starts the better, then the transfer roundabout can go into overdrive!

Yes, that's the point I was making. If he's still at Wolves when the prices are released, there's a good chance he'll be 4.5. Not if he's moved to Forest by then.

Yeah, I have no doubt (altho he was a starter cos Bamford wasn't right). My feeling is Ragabolly initially underpriced him by 0.5 but FPL won't. I'd still like him on my bench at 5m, but I'm pretty sure after at least 2 or 3 others in my draft squad turn out to be more expensive than R's prices, I'll probably not find a space for him and have to fall back on a 4.5.

          4) because there are cheap options in the other positions but very few forward options below 6 million that I can see

I would also opt for 4) as I only wish to play one forward.

Not entirely sure of the reasoning why yet but not looking good for Chelsea.

Hmm, is it the American owner getting jiggy with his new broom, or are the people who know how the thing works seeing the writing on the wall and taking to the hills?

Hard to know just yet but good arguments for both. Seems like Marina has been pushed out due to her close relationship and connections to Abramovic, but maybe it was also a useful excuse to move on someone that's highly regarded there but that has presided over a fair few very expensive transfers in recent years that haven't worked out. Bruce Buck stepping down and moving to an advisory role suggests he's letting a new guard take charge. Perhaps Boehly just wants to move on anyone connected closely to the Abramovich reign but I feel like the players might not like this particular move.

Or maybe be Cech played a big part in most of their major flop signings. Over £300 million spent on Lukaku, Kepa, Werner, Pulisic, Drinkwater....

Double agent Cech was Arsenal's GK when Chelsea bought 3 of those players

True, he certainly seems to have had some influence with their transfers but I'm not sure how much. I've only really heard about his input for Mendy

Dont see how its not looking good for chelsea / in the mud. This restructure and getting in a DoF will benefit them for the years ahead. Still a strong team who have a 200 mil budget and aim for up to 6 signings this summer. They perform best when others doubt them

In my eyes it's more of a timing thing. Long term I understand it but there's a certain guard leaving the club, it's possible they'll lose Alonso and Azpilicueta after losing Rudiger and Christensen and they only really have Havertz as a CF now (and he's still not an out-and-out CF and is still adapting to the role). Losing the person / people in charge of transfers isn't ideal right now, especially with the Kounde situation dragging on for a year now and it looking like they'll have to move on to more expensive (and possibly still complicated) targets like de Ligt.

Rudiger is the only loss there tbh, Azpi is still there (i think). Dont mind Alonso going as we have Emerson backup to Chilwell. But i think signings will be made this summer, and by the start of the season Chelsea will be strong enough to get top 4 for sure

Both are on my wait-and-see list. The club in the former case; the player in the latter.

I love Chilwell as an FPL asset but at the moment Chelsea arent exactly filling me with confidence. Wasnt sure about Perisic due to competition from Sessegnon & the community article on Conte's subbing of WBs has made me even more wary. Starting to consider Romero if I get a Spurs defender

I'm not convinced Perisic will be a regular starter, there was a community article poster here recently showing the minutes of wingbacks under Conte when last at Inter (with 5 sub rule in effect) and he was rotated a lot but also subbed off a lot before 60 mins. Hasn't played in a league as demanding as the PL before too, I think he'll mostly be a rotational option and an extra squad man more than anything

This is the first reference to a specific price.

Let me be excited... it's a grey Monday in SW London. We can't all be enjoying 34 degrees in SE Asia!

Fair dos. My eyes just glaze over their tweets at this stage. Besides, I'm distracted - I've just been knocked out of the Scottish Amateur Cup and my board are not amused!

A part of me thinks they're canvassing the player base as they genuinely haven't a clue how to price him.

Let’s hope not. If they base it on the responses they’re getting everyone’s going to be picking between Haaland and Ollie Watkins.
