FPL 2022/23 prices released: Friday round-up – Haaland’s price revealed

The long-awaited relaunch of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) for 2022/23 looks to be drawing ever closer as the first batch of player prices were released on Friday.

Arsenal were first off the rank, with Manchester City, Brentford, Brighton and Hove Albion and Leeds United following in their wake.

KEY TALKING POINTS

MANCHESTER CITY

Erling Haaland has entered FPL at probably the lowest price we could have expected, being listed as an £11.5m forward after his move to Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund.

That’s the same price that was handed to Romelu Lukaku upon his transfer to Chelsea last summer and a full million short of what Cristiano Ronaldo was initially listed as after his move to Manchester United.

He’s not even the most expensive City asset, with Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) remaining unchanged after a barnstorming end to 2021/22 in which he delivered 21 attacking returns in 20 appearances.

There was no doubt that Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) was going to be handed a price rise after a 201-point campaign in which he started out at a now-unthinkable £6.0m. He actually finished last season at £7.2m after experiencing the highest start-to-finish climb of any FPL defender in the game.

There were eight other City players priced up by FPL Towers on Friday.

Bar De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling (£10.0m), who may be on his way out of the club if rumours are to be believed, there are no City midfielders who will cost you more than £8.0m.

The starting prices of Phil Foden (£8.0m), Ilkay Gundogan (£7.5m) and Bernardo Silva (£7.0m) haven’t changed, while Jack Grealish (£7.0m) and Riyad Mahrez (£8.0m) have actually dropped one million pounds from last summer.

At the back, Kyle Walker comes in at an eye-catching £5.0m, although the possible arrival of Marc Cucurella and the England international’s advancing years are obvious downsides with the 32-year-old right-back, who made only 20 league starts in 2021/22.

We don’t yet have a price for Aymeric Laporte but Ruben Dias is listed at £6.0m and is a non-mover from last season.

ARSENAL

There’s an expected rise for Bukayo Saka after his stellar 2021/22 campaign, with the winger’s starting price climbing from £6.5m to £8.0m.

Fellow attackers Eddie Nketiah (£7.0m), Emile Smith Rowe (£6.0m), Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0m) and Martin Odegaard (£6.5m) have also unsurprisingly risen in price.

Aaron Ramsdale is no longer the £4.5m bargain he was last August, although has only been handed a modest increase to £5.0m.

There are some Arsenal assets who have escaped a price rise despite their value-for-money performances in the season just gone.

The stand-out name is Ben White, who holds steady at £4.5m despite a very decent campaign in which he banked 13 clean sheets.

Fellow defenders Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.0m), Kieran Tierney (£5.0m) and Takehiro Tomiyasu (£4.5m) are also frozen in price.

New signing Fabio Vieirasupplier of 20 attacking returns in 27 league appearances for Porto in 2021/22 – has been given a starting price of £6.0m on his FPL debut, meanwhile.

The signing of Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City has yet to be officially rubber-stamped, so we await a price on the Brazilian.

BRENTFORD

David Raya will be staking an early claim as many FPL managers’ set-and-forget goalkeeper after being priced up at £4.5m.

Raya boasted the joint-fourth-best points-per-match average (4.0) among first-choice shotstoppers last season, with his achievements perhaps going unnoticed thanks to a mid-season injury.

Brentford don’t meet one of last season’s top four until Gameweek 12, while Manchester City, Spurs and Liverpool aren’t concerns until November onwards.

Ivan Toney is marginally up to £7.0m after finishing fifth for points among FPL forwards in 2021/22. A penalty-taking striker who didn’t get substituted once last season will have his admirers, especially with the aforementioned good early fixture run.

Brentford’s price reveals also gave us our first positional changes of the summer, with Bryan Mbeumo (£6.0m) now a forward and Sergi Canos (£5.0m) becoming a defender. Both reclassifications came about thanks to Thomas Frank’s use of a 3-5-2 for much of the season (Mbeumo up front, Canos at wing-back) but the Brentford boss chiefly used a 4-3-3 for the final 12 Gameweeks, with Mbeumo employed as a right-winger.

Elsewhere, defenders Pontus Jansson, Kristoffer Ajer, Rico Henry and Ethan Pinnock join Raya in remaining at £4.5m. Jansson clocked up seven attacking returns last season, a tally only beaten by five FPL defenders – all of them more expensive attacking full/wing-backs like Cancelo.

Midfielders Vitaly Janelt, Christian Norgaard and Yoane Wissa are handed £5.5m starting prices, with Wissa an interesting proposition if Frank continues with his 4-3-3 set-up. Wissa banked six attacking returns in the final nine Gameweeks of 2021/22, with the change in shape allowing him more starting opportunities.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION

The price reveals for Brighton may not attract many headlines but there are handful of intriguing names and prices to pick out.

Marc Cucurella at £5.0m is worth monitoring if a reported move to Manchester City materialises: like Walker, he’d be £2.0m cheaper than Cancelo. Cucurella was a bonus-collecting machine in 2021/22, with only four defenders racking up more bonus points than his 21 across the campaign.

Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez remains at £4.5m while centre-half Lewis Dunk drops to the same rung, his lowest starting price since 2019/20. Dunk found the back of the net just once last season but had delivered a combined 11 attacking returns across his previous two campaigns.

While there might not be many takers in the injury-prone Danny Welbeck and the profligate Neal Maupay at £6.5m, the listing of fellow forward Deniz Undav at £5.5m is something to keep an eye on during pre-season. The German striker was the leading goalscorer in the Belgian top tier in 2021/22, hitting 25 goals in 33 appearances. Whilst there has to be a healthy does of scepticism about the standard of opposition he faced, Albion’s recruitment has been pretty good for the past few years (Mac Allister, Cucurella, Caicedo, Mwepu etc) and he’s one for the watchlist.

Pascal Gross (£5.5m), Leandro Trossard (£6.5m), Tariq Lamptey (£4.5m), Moises Caicedo (£5.0m) and Alexis Mac Allister (£5.5m) round off the Brighton player price reveals, with Trossard sadly but entirely expectedly not the subject of a positional reclassification despite his late-season stint as a free-scoring wing-back.

LEEDS UNITED

The fifth team of the day to reveal a priced-up XI were Leeds.

Any hopes that an injury-ravaged 2021/22 campaign would lead to a significant price drop for Patrick Bamford (£7.5m) were dashed as the perma-crocked striker was listed only half a million cheaper than he was 12 months ago.

There’s also disappointent for those FPL managers who were hoping the Danish Matt Doherty would come in at £4.5m: goalscoring wing-back Rasmus Kristensen makes his debut as a £5.0m defender, instead.

Fellow summer recruit, attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson, is priced up at £5.5m, while another new arrival, defensive shield Marc Roca, is £5.0m.

Illan Meslier (£4.5m), Robin Koch (£4.5m) and Liam Cooper (£4.5m) are cheaper routes than Kristensen into a fairly ropey Leeds backline, while Daniel James (£6.0m) and Jack Harrison (£6.0m) are the same price as they were before 2021/22 got underway.

Joe Gelhardt (£5.5m) is no longer to be found at the bottom of the forwards’ bargain bin, while Rodrigo (£6.0m) has been reclassified as a midfielder and drops half a million.

Raphinha is conspicuous by his absence, with the Brazilian seemingly set for a move away from Elland Road.

Leeds defenders having the same pricing as Arsenal defenders doesn't seem the best value lol

They don’t have a single asset I’m interested in at the prices, Harrison at 6m is a disappointment too, Bamford should have been 7

Meslier looks the only value option with those prices. I wanted Gelhardt (like many did) but £5.5 is too much for a bench warmer.

Arsenal slots are more valuable in general, so filling them up with defenders (particularly ones that don't have much attacking threat) is a sacrifice that you wouldn't have to make with a Leeds defender.

Not good, was expecting Kristensen to be 4.5 & he’s come in at 5 like Gabriel, Tierney & Cucurella!

Meslier could be an option & possibly Aaronson

It's bizzare that they consider them equal defences. Leeds xGC was the 2nd worst in the division, behind only Norwich. Arsenal's was top 7... what is going on?

Shall we just use Ragabolly's prices this season?

It's simply about choice. From Arsenal you have potentially 5-7 great attacking options, mostly priced conservatively due to rotation concerns rather than value when on the pitch.

At Leeds, you have fewer, crapper attacking options, with less potential to explode (because Leeds - and because less squad depth ((price is based more on nailedness in the team)) so you have space for their defenders if they look any good at any point during the 38 GW season.

FPL aren't valuing their defences the same. It's not a straight choice of Leeds def vs Arse def. There's more to the game, as you know.

Seems crazy to price Bamford 0.5m more than Toney, unless they genuinely think he's going back to 20/21 season form (with no Raphinha!)

Honestly, I'm relieved as I've been questioning my judgement at only going 1 striker, either a Haaland or a Brennan Johnson

To see Toney and Bamford grossly overpriced just makes the game a little easier, when there's enough decisions to be made already

Prices of defenders and strikers strongly suggest there will be a points rule change for defenders and strikers. Strikers have been useless in the past few seasons

yeah I actually don't really have a problem with Haaland's price; he is 3.5m more than Mahrez/Foden after all - I think expecting him to be a Salah-type price was incorrect personally

Not sure about that. I think they are happy to give you the choice to spend big on forwards instead of the safety of the premium mid slots, or otherwise take a 4.5-5.5 option as a sacrifice. Or otherwise pick your favourite 6.5-8m striker. It's still not an obvious choice; lots of room for variation in how teams look. If mid-priced strikers were a little bit cheaper, then 3 up top would be a much easier choice, because the cheaper strikers suck and give you a sucky bench.

I hope my rambling makes sense. I refuse to read it back and edit it.

With Raphinha leaving,i dont think they will still score enough goals. Bamford fitness is questionable. Gelhardt is still young. Unless there is some decent replacements,i will stay clear.

I don't get the uproar. All of those prices are fair. Surely its all about options.

If we have 10 or more 4.5m truly viable defenders to choose from then it increases variance and reduces the formation of the dreaded template.

People will always have the premium players regardless of price so there will always be the same spine to every team. It's the rest of the team that makes the difference. We want that pool of the other players to be as large as possible to make the game more skill based.

Cant disagree with that, the 2nd striker slot is dead again unless Nunez and Jota go big this season.

not sure how any prices so far indicate that pool of other players is going to be any bigger than usual, and therefore most of the players are going to be unusable again, but it's the same for everyone so I'm over it

All those Arsenal defenders now become really enticing/intriguing/possible picks

At .5 more none would be remotely interesting, the exception being a 5.5 Gabriel

yeah but similarly do they (Arsenal defenders) not make say 4.5m Leeds defenders an idiots choice? Maybe the next Stuart Dallas is just sitting there though tbf, or maybe I'm just wrong lol

No, no what you're saying is more than valid

Arsenal have Europa once more and have been actually a pretty poor side (relatively speaking) for the past few years

I do think they should and could introduce some 4m defenders from the likes of Leeds and the promoted clubs

To be perfectly honest, only Coady at 4.5 and Gabriel at 5 were excellent cheap defenders last season

Leeds 20-21 were very good defensively in terms of clean sheets

White and Tomi have 0 attacking threat as well

19-20 Ings 6.0 and Jimenez 7.5 both nearly 200 points
          20-21 DCL 7.0 and Bamford 5.5

It's only last season after Antonio's cliff jump did we see a dearth in cheap striker capabilities

It's also important to know that very few players are held by very few active managers for the entirety of the season

I think they see the likes of Bamford and Toney worth owning in a block of fixtures, hop on, hop off

Gelhardt at £5.5 is making me think they are forcing us to play 433 or 343. £5.5 is too much for a 1st sub.
Will there be any viable £4.5 or £5.0 forwards this season? Hoping Bournemouth have one Moore/Dembele.

I think they see a bit of potential in Gelhardt, not necessarily to have a breakout season, but to be a bright spark for Leeds

Undav at the same price might be better value than Gelhardt.e, I think I'll stick 2x4.5s on the bench and just suck it up. A 0 point no-show is not much worse than a 1-point cameo from a 5.5

Isn't it opposite? Gelhardt 5.5m, 43 points last season, not nailed, in (potentially) relegation candidate vs Gabriel 5.0m, 146 points last season, in top 5 team. Doesn't make any sense, makes the game so template and boring, I've hoped they will work with prices little bit more this season but it looks like lazy pricing once again.

The opposite? £4.5 - £5.0 forward bracket would be for your bench options if playing just one or two forward formations. You aren't going to be happy wasting budget on £5.5 bench players therefore you have to look at the £6.0+ forward options. Obviously not going to have £6.0+ players on your bench, so you have to play three forwards.

Sorry, misread your post a bit but my point is still valid, lazy pricing from FPL, forcing us to pick specific players/formations, forwards clearly overpriced.

I replied before I saw this reply. The 'budget' forward options certainly look overpriced. Howeverthe premium forwards (Haaland) looks underpriced.
I think most people will end up with Haaland, Jesus plus a mid-high price forward.

I actually think the 5-subs thing gives the FWD (4.5 - 4.5) front line more legs than usual, as most (FPL-relevant) players will come on for 1-pointers if they don't start, making the bench worth less this season

Not sure that’d be that unpopular an opinion. Grealish got about 90 points last season and has set a really low bar in terms of fantasy returns. We know what tends to happen with City attacking players in their second season. Martinelli’s getting better all the time and already got about 110 last season. Think it’s very feasible.

          3. @persecuted_by_mods

Grealish yes, Martinelli almost 0 chance as too much competition for his position when he's inevitably out of form and gets niggly injuries constantly anyway. Whereas Grealish always performs best bouncing off a main striker

Can I ask where this notion that strikers are massively overpriced comes from?

I get that 7m defenders out score 7m strikers but 4.5m defenders out score 4.5m strikers and the same is true at every price in between.

Given we are forced to have a 553 squad of at least £66.5m it’s a game of how best to spend the “additional” money so you can’t compare players of the same price in different positions really in such a simplified way.

I mean shouldn’t we be comparing how much more a 7m defender scores than a 4.5m defender compared with how much more a 7m striker scores than a 4.5m striker in which case the prices are pretty reasonable.

The 'budget' forward options (one you usual have on your bench) seem overpriced.
You would happily have White/Tomiyasu at £4.5 on your bench. You would not be happy benching a £5.5 forward who will likely get less points than the Arsenal defender.

Yep so you are forced to spend more on you attack overall - probably because casuals like focussing on attackers - so in relative terms the prices are fine.

If you had flexibility over your overall squad structure I’d agree with others but 553 is fixed.

You're not 'forced'. I have 2x4.5 forwards on my draft bench. I'm prepared to suck it up and take the odd 0-point return with a strong XI rather than weaken the Starting XI in order to bag a 1-point cameo from a 5.5 forward off my bench.

Ok sure - and I can see the logic for this but either:

You are going 451 and it’s giving up a mid priced forward for a mid priced midfielder - which last season was a pretty even choice unless you happened to pick the right midfielder (Saka or Bowen both of whom are now more expensive)

Or you are going 541 and you need to allow for the points given up by having no rotation in your starting 11. So for instance my draft has 3 4.5-5m defenders and I can rotate which 2 I play each week.

Yeah, it's the latter, and there's every chance some GWs I'll have 10 active players. I'm okay with that. The alternative is cutting my 2nd-tier midfielders - Foden and Kulusevski down to low-priced 6-6.5m sorts who I'd have far less confidence in.

And that’s completely fair and I can certainly see the case for that approach but I’m just saying I don’t think the choice is a no brainer and part of the reason some are arguing it is is because they are oversimplifying the comparison.

I hate the term 'no brainer' - nothing is mindless. But I do think my draft is sound. See below....

Cancelo is 3m over replacement (2.5m if you don't include 4.0 defenders as viable), the lowest viable forward is usually 5.5m so 3m above that is 8.5 - so Cancelo should be compared to players like Wilson; who he will most likely smash

so it's Tomiyasu vs a 6m forward; again he will probably smash them up if he stays fit

Gabriel vs a 6.5 Mitrovic could be tasty battle

So last season taking out exception cases the “good” 5.5 forwards scored about 60 points and a “good” 4.5 defender scored about 110 points. So in your comparison Cancelo needs to outscore Wilson by 50 points.

In fairness, I think only 5 defenders who started out at £4.5m got 110 points or more last season. They were Cody, Dier, Guehi, Anderson and Jansson.

Fair but I think 12 got over 100 so the basic concept I think holds

no, Cancelo just needs to beat Wilson to be better (assuming Wilson is 8.5, probably should have said Jesus or something) - the 4.5 defenders outscored the 5.5 forwards because 5.5 forwards are bad value, which is kinda the point I'm making (even though I'd compare 4.5 defs to 6.0 forwards, 4.5s still win)

I’m not sure you follow my point, apologies I may well have explained it poorly. In the second half of your comments you actually explain why Cancelo has to do more than just beat Wilson

Which may very well happen but I don’t think it’s so obvious as the criticism people are giving.

I always compare prices in every position as I aim to get value out of each £1m so I would always compare a £6m defender say with a £6m mid or striker.

I’m saying that comparison doesn’t make sense without comparing to the points given up by going cheaper.

The reality is the game is mostly played with your first 11. So you are, in fact, choosing between a 6 million striker or defender for the same slot. The points given up by the cheaper option don’t matter as much because that selection is likely to be on your bench.

I don’t agree - you could easily play a 4.5m def in your starting 11 whereas no one would plan to play a 4.5m defender so the choice could easily be:

6m striker, play a 4.5m defender and spend 1.5m more on the rest vs 6m defender, 4.5m striker as a bench fodder and 1.5m less on the rest of the squad.

I think better with specifics. Here is my draft. Tell me which players I should cut to upgrade my benchie forwards:

                          Raya 4.5
TAA Cancelo 7.0 Matip Chilwell Tomiyasu 4.5
                          Salah Foden Kulusevski Martinelli 6.0
                          Haaland 11.5

                          GK 4m, Mid 4.5, 2xFwd 4.5

You “shouldn’t” do anything if you like they squad great - and to be fair it looks very strong.

My draft is closer to downgrading Chilwell and Matip to 4.5/5m who would rotate with the other 4.5m to bring in a 7.5m forward.

To be honest the 7.5m forwards aren’t inspiring me much, but there’s enough of them that I fully expect a strong one to emerge quickly so I want a structure that lets me get to them in one transfer.

That's the thing - I'd expect Chilwell and Matip to outscore those mid-price forwards. Even if one c6.5 forward starts well, I wouldn't punt on him to keep going (eg Antonio last time). I'm focussing on big-team players who should be dependable (and Arsenal for their first 8 fixtures only)

Appreciate that a cheap forward does historically emerge the tactical shifts in the game are making this less likely year by year and last season it was literally just Antonio for about four gameweeks and nothing else all season. I would have liked to see the pricing reflect this

So part of my approach is based on assuming I will get things wrong.

So wherever there’s a cluster of players at a similar price I want to make sure I have a slot for that price point so that I can easily move to an option that emerges.

So 7.5m striker, 5m defender, 8m midfielder etc.

A lot of squads I’ve seen have lots of premium defenders from the same cluster and can’t easily get to midfield or striker clusters. If it works great - but if it doesn’t it means using multiple transfers and playing catch up.

This is the kind of tiering I’m looking at too.

Budgeting for each position so that I can hop on bandwagons at their likely price points in just one transfer.

My set up is very similar to yours but I will probably have an extra million invested on the bench.
Finding this season's Dennis and Broja will be essential for playing just one forward. I know you've already said you are happy to suck it up with 0 pointer £4.5s but I will be making early transfers to get the point scoring £4.5/£5.0 forwards.

Equally i will be doing the same to get this season's Ramsey £4.5 mid.

That said, doing it your way makes my starting XI look amazing.

                              £9.5: Meslier, 4,0
£35.0: TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, James, Chilwell
£35.0: Diaz, Kulu, Grealish, Martinelli, £4.5
                              £20.5: Haaland, 4.5, 4.5
