Brighton v Crystal Palace: FPL Gameweek 8 fixture postponed

The first Premier League postponement of the season was confirmed on Wednesday evening but for once, it’s not weather or Covid-19 putting paid to a match.

“Exceptional circumstances relating to planned industrial action” was cited as the reason for the postponement of Brighton and Hove Albion v Crystal Palace, which leaves both clubs without a fixture in Gameweek 8.

A new date for the match, which was originally scheduled for Saturday 17 September, hasn’t been announced but it can’t be accommodated in the midweek after Gameweek 8 as an international break follows.

Albion and the Eagles will, therefore, get a Double Gameweek whenever the M23 derby is finally rearranged.

A Premier League statement said:

“Following a request to the Premier League Board by Brighton & Hove Albion FC, the club’s home fixture against Crystal Palace, due to be played at 15:00 BST on Saturday 17 September, has been regrettably postponed.

“The decision follows exceptional circumstances relating to the planned industrial action on the rail network, with authorities unable to sanction the fixture to be played with no public transport available for supporters.

“The Premier League has consulted with both clubs, police, the Safety Advisory Group for Brighton & Hove City Council and other relevant authorities in exploring alternative plans but all have agreed there was no other option but to postpone the fixture.

“A new date for the rescheduled match will be announced in due course.”

IMPLICATIONS FOR FPL MANAGERS

The timing of the postponement is bothersome for FPL bosses who wanted Brighton representation for the Seagulls’ clash with Bournemouth this weekend.

It’s one of the standout fixtures of Gameweek 7 but anyone moving for, or already owning, the likes of Pascal Gross (£6.0m), Alexis Mac Allister (£5.6m) or Leandro Trossard (£6.5m) will have to have an exit plan or a deep bench in preparation for Gameweek 8 to circumvent the Brighton blank.

The cancellation may also bring forward a number of Wildcards that were intended to be played during the September international break.

Gross is the fourth-most-owned midfielder in the game, while Robert Sanchez (£4.7m) is behind only the bargain-bin Danny Ward (£4.0m) in terms of popularity amongst goalkeepers.

Reposting now after the postponement news:

    GW8 Wildcard vs GW9 Wildcard

Let's get the usual caveats out the way... This is all team dependent, it also depends on your read on the strength of teams and fixture swings, it also depends on your risk profile as a manager and what your ideal wildcard looks like...

The time to plan your wildcard is right now imo. Before the end of this deadline, you should have a plan on whether to WC in 8 or 9 because your transfers will change depending on which gameweek you want to dead-end into.

    Pros for GW8:
+ Fulham/Mitrovic's fixture swing begins here
+ Spurs have LEI in GW8 which can be attacked.
+ Liverpool's bad fixture swing starts in 8 so a good time to jump off until GW13 if you don't want TAA + Salah.
+ Newcastle have BOU and a great run of games which can be a perfect time to load up.
+ Remove Brighton and CPL assets for their blank GW like Sanchez, Dunk, Gross etc
+ Earlier than the curve so you can get some price rises ahead of time.

    Pros for GW9:
+ The international break in 9 is a more natural time to do it because of potential injuries.
+ Arsenal's fixtures swing in 9 not 8 if you think Brentford away is a targetable fixture and want to keep triple Arsenal for that game.
+ Chelsea's fixtures swing in 9 for the better if you want to invest in them - Sterling, James etc
+ Liverpool have BHA if that's a game you want to attack and if you want to keep the safety of TAA + Salah on WC.
+ Leicester have a great run of games from 9 if you want Maddison & Co.

For me, the strengths of a GW8 wildcard are greater than 9 for my specific read/team. I don't think Brentford is a game to hold triple Arsenal for. I don't really like Chelsea assets even with their good run of games. I don't want TAA + Salah for this run of games with European congestion and middling form. I want Spurs players for GW8 - I might even triple with Son, Kane, Perisic - I don't really want Leicester players, and I want Fulham/Newcastle players ahead of the curve.

Yes, it is better to have a wildcard over the international break just in case there are injuries, but I think the pros of 8 outweigh 9 for me especially now the Brighton game has been postponed.

Lastly, I would recommend WC'ing in 8 or 9 and not waiting until GW12 basically no matter what your team looks like. There's just not enough time before the World Cup if you WC later for you to realize the value of the WC imo.

        Folks in Merry England,

Is there a chance other games will be called off due to this rail strike?
Is there a chance the game will be shifted to Monday, same GW?

no change, they would be able to reverse the fixture. It is still Southern Railway.

I have a feeling the DGW Brighton v Palace will happen before the midweek game though, probably before the WC. Sussex Police like this, makes their job easier as Brighton Station is a bit of a hot potato

If Trent and Salah haul against Wolves, will you be able to sell them in GW8 WC? Probably easier to sell after their blank in GW9. That's how the GW9 WildCards are going to win long term.

Getting rid of them ahead of a run of che BHA ars MCI is not a mistake imo.

Yeah true. I listed my conclusions. But I understand why people might not agree.

            - Chelsea new manager bounce
            - TAA + Salah being FPL royalty and season keepers
            - Jesus being too high ownership/too good and must keep for Brentford and beyond

These are all logical takes as well which favor a GW9 WC instead.

On the same page. It just is better for my team (I might hang onto James if Potter gets the job). Spurs Derby (goals), Brighton and Everton are good as well

Agree with Spurs GW8-11/12 look good, Newcastle even Emerson for west ham fodder) great fixtures. Will decide on Toney/kane or SonVanother midfielder, later on, might punt on Bowen we shall see.

I think WC GW8 for me. Was planning a mini-WC in GW8: Salah, Robertson and Archer to Son, Perisic and Mitro. With Zaha and Sanchez in my team this plan is in ruins. (Zaha is the biggest troll ever for me. Scores for fun, bring him in: blanks and game get cancelled.)

gw9 for me ... otherwise the IB guarantees at least a -16 due to two weeks to tinker in. The gw after a IB often seems to end up being really low scoring, so hits are relatively expensive (in proportion to total score)

GW8 also benefits from price changes whereas IB WCs usually see little price action e.g. can see Mitrovic rising 0.2m+ in GW8 and Liverpool assets all falling

If your team is ok why WC at all ? Normally we attack fixture swings where the good teams have easy fixtures, not the middling teams who are just as likely to get beaten on their so called fixture swing

If you built your ideal WC team I reckon most people now would have a very different team to the one they have now. Chelsea and Liverpool don't have form to back up their upturn in fixtures. It makes sense to change things up.

Of course a WC team would be different, it is a team of the moment ... but for many there is no need to WC for fixture swings that basically favours Fulham and Newcastle (Leicester too?) - you can get Mitro & Trippier with free transfers if you don't already have them.

The argument seems more in relations to ditching players from the top teams because of a couple of tough fixtures they may have, which for me isn't a reason for playing a WC.

Maybe share what you think is the ideal GW8 WC and let's debate it's merit against a current / typical non WC team?

Funny how Trippier is the only one we can all agree on.

Yeah sadly. I had my eyes on players from Wol and CP from GW 10 onwards, but I have no clue on who to get until then. I don't wanna get players and make them warm the bench for 3 GW's and maybe take their price drops too. So any suggestions? Spurs WBs rotation is crazy. I wanted 5 playing defenders. Emerson Royal has played every minute though, you think that should continue?

I actually dont mind Emerson as a pick. Not a great player really but his role is a goldmine anyway. I have no idea what's going on with Doherty though.

Andersen (Palace) is a decent option if you're going 4.5 & want someone rotation-proof.

Yeah I have Andersen and Collins on my list. Problem is they have a good fixture run from GW10/11 onwards. All the big teams are playing each other in the next 3-4 GW's huge problem. Brighton CP postponement adds to that. Yeah not sure why Doherty hasn't featured. Is just letting the big team defenders 1 pointers for the 3-4 GW's the best strat since everybody has them already?

Would probably be 2 of the first defenders/players I'd put in my WC team. Together cover poor MUN fixtures quire well so maybe Dalot could be in there too. Trippier a good shout. One or two of James, Chilwell and Cucu could be good too.

I thought about Fabianski and Leno. Fabianski has the worst save percentage and baseline bps among the keepers I compared. Pickford is better than both in that price change and with similar, if not better, fixtures. In fact, as an individual player, Pickford has the best save percentage this year and the best career penalty save percentage. He is better than all other keepers at 5.1m and below. Pope comes in second. Fabianski has been worst of the lot, with Sanchez, Raya, Martinez, Leno and Guaita somewhere in between.

However, Everton has been poor at the back. Check my post somewhere in the previous 2 pages of this article. Newcastle and West Ham are better at the back.

Have 6.3m ITB, so might upgrade Aaronson to Son for LEI 🙂

I may be daft but… dare I reverse my move of a few weeks ago and do Diaz to Rashford?

2FT 0.1 ITB. Was thinking Trent/James downgrade and Archer upgrade to Toney/Mitro/Isak but not sure…

    Sanchez (Ward)
    TAA Cancelo James Trippier (Neco)
    Salah Martinelli Diaz Groß (DaSilva)
    Haaland Jesus (Archer)

Game called off because of a train strike? How come when Newcastle fans had to go to Brighton away when there was a strike, the game went on as planned?

In Brighton they don’t - people live on trees and trains

We live in the trees up here - they haven't invented trains either. We've only just discovered the wheel.

I was season ticket holder at Amex first 3 seasons - the ground is hard to get to if you don’t drive when Falmer station is closed. CPL V BHA is considered a local Derby as both teams dislike each other so would be full house - likely a financial decision ? I agree game should have gone ahead plus The Albion coffers been massively boosted by the sales of CuCu, Bissouma, Maupay etc

General consensus is to WC GW8-9 since it's during the IB and is enough time before World Cup to reap the rewards of it. Was always my plan, but I'm fairly happy with where the team is and not sure how much value there is in swapping out a few players I'll likely want back after a few weeks. Would you WC this squad?

    Sanchez
    TAA - Cancelo - James - Trippier
    Salah - Martinelli - Gross
    Haaland - Jesus - Toney

    Ward - Bailey - Andreas - Neco

      No

      Salah to son

      Gross to rashford

These were some of the moves I toyed around with. The first 2 don't look like bad moves, but I can see them coming back to haunt me.

Jesus is a once every few weeks - certainly not something to be feared. mitro has outdone him thus far and has the fixtures

Salah just limits the rest of the team - I’m quite happy with sterling at 3mil cheaper. Son looked keen, sharp, unlucky- we know what he does when he goes purple

And utd well when they are on it they score goals

Martinelli is a set and forget till form drops off

Sanchez could be improved potentially but it’s low key imo

Likewise for pool I’d expect upside with injuries easing - salah however is overpriced for form and limits the surrounding team

Personally I think the intl break is the worst time to WC - teams can go into an intl break on fire and come out the other side completely different. Very difficult to judge form and jump on the correct assets

    I’m looking to hold beyond 8 & 9

I might be keeping mine in my back pocket as well. Could end up using it as a FH for the GW before the World Cup.

The Chelsea situation opens up great uncertainty. I was looking at keeping my squad going with a couple of hits and postponing the WC indefinitely. I don't see a problem with that if your squad is in decent shape.

Exactly, tbh I’m more hopeful with the Chelsea situation now than before

James & Sterling and staying firmly until I can gage the reaction.

I like the look of gw14 to attack free hit wise.
Dont see a reason to definitely wc gw 8 or 9 when having 11 fit and good players....fixtures or not.

Best move fellas?. Have exact cash for both so annoying I can't absorb a price rise or drop

    A ) Diaz , Archer ---,> Mitro, Rashford -4
    B ) Peresic , Archer ,--> Emerson, Mitro -4

Both mean I can bench Peresic this gw too.
