Which FPL players are on international duty before Gameweek 9?

Scotland v Ukraine got the first international break of 2022/23 underway on Wednesday evening but the action starts in earnest on Thursday, with well over 200 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players in action for their countries over the next week.

It’s also the last international break before the World Cup in November, so the nations who have qualified for Qatar 2022 will be putting the final touches on their pre-tournament preparations.

Most countries are playing twice over this window, although a handful of nations have a triple-header of games to squeeze in.

ANY LATE RETURNEES?

Returning Sarr among the FPL differentials for Double Gameweek 26

The good news: there are no international fixtures taking place in the early hours of next Thursday morning (something we occasionally saw in previous Covid-affected seasons) and a number of the Premier League players who are representing countries from South America and Africa will actually be contesting friendlies in Europe – so there will be a lot fewer long-haul flights back/late returns to England as a result.

Here’s a cherry-picked selection of which key non-European countries are playing where and when:

CountryPlayersMatches being played in…
ArgentinaE. Martinez, Mac Allister, Alvarez, L. Martinez, RomeroUSA (Sep 24 + 28)
BrazilThiago Silva, Alisson, Fabinho, Firmino, Ederson, Antony, Casemiro, Fred, Guimaraes, Lodi, Richarlison, PaquetaFrance (Sep 23 + 27)
ColombiaLerma, Sinisterra, Diaz, SanchezUSA (Sep 25 + 28)
EgyptSalahEgypt (Sep 23 + 27)
Ivory CoastZaha, Aurier, Boly, CornetFrance (Sep 24 + 27)
JamaicaBailey, Lowe, DeCordova-Reid, AntonioUSA (Sep 28)
SenegalKoulibaly, Gueye, N. Mendy, Niakhate, Kouyate, SarrFrance + Slovakia (Sep 24 + 27)
South KoreaSon, HwangSouth Korea (Sep 23 + 27)
UruguayDarwin, Pellistri, BentancurAustria + Slovakia (Sep 23 + 27)

The last returnees will be those players representing Argentina, Colombia and Jamaica.

Luis Diaz (£8.2m), Cristian Romero (£4.9m) and Davinson Sanchez (£4.4m) are among the names who are in action in the United States in the early hours of Wednesday morning. This trio then resume domestic duties on Saturday, with Spurs centre-halves Romero and Sanchez involved in the lunchtime kick-off against north London rivals Arsenal.

Leon Bailey (£4.7m), Luis Sinisterra (£6.5m), Lisandro Martinez (£4.5m) and Julian Alvarez (£6.2m) are also playing across the Atlantic but have Premier League matches on the Sunday of Gameweek 9, so enjoy an extra recovery day.

Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) and Son Heung-min (£11.7m) are both off back to their homelands in Egypt and South Korea, rounding off their international commitments with friendlies on Tuesday.

NOTABLE OMISSIONS

FPL pre-season: Jesus hat-trick and Saka on pens

Aside from sidelined players like Andrew Robertson (£6.7m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.1m), whose injuries render them unavailable for selection, there are some welcome snubs and rests for a number of key FPL assets over this international fortnight.

Arsenal’s trio of Brazilians, Gabriel Jesus (£8.1m), Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.1m) and Gabriel Martinelli (£6.6m), were overlooked by national team coach Tite, while Ben White (£4.5m) was also omitted from Gareth Southgate’s squad list.

One-cap wonder Marc Cucurella (£5.2m) is one of the few Chelsea regulars not away on international duty meanwhile, so he’ll enjoy an extended reunion with Graham Potter over this two-week hiatus.

Emerson Royal (£5.1m) is the only one of Spurs’ many wing-backs who aren’t away with their country, meanwhile, perhaps putting him in pole position for a starting spot in the Gameweek 9 clash with Arsenal given the early kick-off time.

James Maddison (£7.9m), Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (£5.0m), James Justin (£4.3m) and Harvey Barnes (£6.9m) all have two weeks off ahead of Leicester’s appealing-looking home fixture against Nottingham Forest, too.

Well-owned midfielders Andreas Pereira (£4.6m) and Pascal Gross (£6.0m) also have their feet up this fortnight.

I'm 0.1m off affording this WC team (i.e. it's affordable if either Salah or Cucurella loses 0.1m in value):

    Ward // Guaita
Cancelo James Trippier Cucurella // Saliba
Salah Maddison Zaha // Bailey Andreas
    Haaland Toney Mitrović

    Any changes?

A: go for that team, assuming prices are OK
    B: Zaha, Toney --> Sterling, 4.3
C: Cucurella, Saliba, Bailey --> Williams, 4.0 DF, Martinelli
    D: B+C
    E: something else

How would you approach Salah on WC? I see the following options:

    1) Not getting him at any point, instead e.g. Diaz/Jota/Nunez
    2) Get him now
    3) Downgrade other premium and get him for GW12

In case of 2) and 3), how would you find him? Solanke over Toneyor cheaper mid over ~8.0 one?

I am really considering going for him over KDB as Soton match for Mancity is sandwiched between 2 UCL matches so I see chance he will be benched and Salah vs BHA seems best captain as if now with chaos at Seagulls

Of all the template breakers it is DCL that could be the Phoenix from the mist.
Jesus > DCL could be a good starting point.
I think Everton get top six this year and the conversation will start soon on this site.
I have taken out a sizable bet on top four.

If you watch Frank's last few interviews he's getting cheesed off with continuous Dominic questions, for good reasons I feel.
I think we will see him after the IB but possibly as a sub for Maupay.
Yes, he will be in the conversation very soon, from an Everton team that are very underated. Frank's doing a sterling job.

Everton has been playing great football this season. Top 6 may be a bit far fetched. I think Liverpool will be comfortably above them for the 6th spot. But yes, top 10 is achievable.

        1. THE SHEEP HUNTERS
          • 7 Years

          Fair.
Top four is 250/1 which I should of said I've made a small play to win big.
Top six is 50/1 which I have made a big play on.
Top half is a gimme in my book.

Curious now. What's your play for the top 4?

But yes, I agree that Everton assets are comfortably overlooked in this forum. Pickford, for example, may outscore other keepers from now till GW12. DCL, as you said, is another fantasy asset I am keenly monitoring.

A couple of points in my thinking.
The Gunners will drop off and will be fighting for that fourth spot come the nitty gritty.
The sleeping giants for me are Everton.
Man City have it won already although they will drop points to Everton.
Pool will claw it back to finish second just ahead of Spurs.
That aforementioned scrap for fourth I'm still undecided on.

I think its reasonable to start Iversen for the small chance that he starts against Forest. The idea is, if he does, I expect him to score more points than Pope. If he doesn't, which of course is more likely, then he will be replaced by Pope.

So, its not bench wackery but a genuine attempt to score more points.

    Reprieve for Mr. Rodgers ...

Leicester City intend to give under-pressure manager Brendan Rodgers more time to turn things around at the Premier League's bottom-placed club. However, the reception he receives from fans at the home game against Nottingham Forest could be key to the Northern Irishman's future at the club. (The Athletic - subscription required)

The wild carders this week actually have some tricky decisions to make regarding the missed games last week, especially in regard to Chelsea and how Potter sets them up.
And with that crucial blank on the horizon, it all feels like a lot of trip hazards need to be avoided.

Is there any news on whether the games will be rescheduled this side of the WC?

If the CL game was any indication of things to come, then yes. Maddison will he back to FPL teams soon enough. As well as Sterling. James will take time to settle.

Sterling played as wing back but still the most advanced player on the pitch, albeit wide. Maddison was in the thick of things. It appeared to me that James was trying to adapt to the wing back role with partial success.

Weird comment... confusing Maddison/Mount? James is as natural a RWB as they come - he's the only one who seems really safe to pick for now. Sterling at LWB a wait & see

Yeah and James had the second-highest average position on the pitch after Sterling

His price will not decrease. His ownership went from more than 50% to almost 35%. Only one price fall -- its abnormal.

Unless there's a transparent rule for price changes, players like Trent and Salah will not drop in value.

The more I look at my team, the more I feel the need to WC. Perhaps a fresh perspective is needed. Would any of you WC this?

    Ederson Ward
    Cancelo James Trippier Saliba Neco
    Aaronson Marti Diaz Maddison Andreas
    Kane Haaland Jesus

    0 FT and 0.2 ITB

    Cheers for any advice offered.

Why was a Leeds defender ever priced at £5.0m in the first place ? Should all be £4.5m max.

Price manipulation from FPL. It's been well known for a while now that they sometimes manually interfere with price changes if it benefits casual players.

International breaks are so much longer if you have a poor GW score before the break.

    On WC:
    a) Diaz/Foden/Kulu and Solanke/Daka
    b) Martinelli and Toney

    Guaita
    James, Trips, Cancelo
    Salah, Zaha, Madisson, X
    X, Haaland, Toney

    Subs: Ward, andreas, neco, mings

I'm holding my wildcard, what would you do?

    Raya
    Trent, Cancelo, Trippier,
    KDB, Diaz, Martinelli, Gross
    Haaland, Jesus, Mitrovic

    Ward. Andreas, Patterson, Neco.

    1 FT, 0.9m itb.

I'd like Pope, James and possibly Maddison or Zaha too.

    1. Mr. O'Connell
      • 12 Years
      2 years, 3 months ago

You have the top scoring keeper for the next 4 gameweeks so don't worry about Pope.

I'd just hold transfer for now.

I would hold the WC. Maybe roll & try to upgrade Gross to Zaha next week? If you really want Maddison you should probably move before NFO though but it can only be via Diaz I guess

Agree don't need Pope right now. If you want Maddison for NFO game then I'd do Cancelo and Gross to James and Maddison for a -4. You'd probably have to stomach no Cancelo until a GW 13 WC though. You then just have Haaland Martinelli and Jesus to worry about in GW12. Instead of taking the hit to get James and Maddison you could think about Jesus to Toney for GW 9 as your FT? Then Gross to Zaha GW10. Roll transfer for GW 11 and do two transfers GW 12 to help with the blank GW.

So there are unlimited transfers during the world cup, but will these actually count as transfers or will it be like a wildcard where they don't get tallied? Can't remember what happened in that first covid season where they essentially did this.

    1. Nuka Girl
      • 8 Years

Haven't heard this, but they are transfers as opposed to a Wildcard - my guess.
