FPL review: Kane’s goals, why De Bruyne was benched

Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City is the second and final Sunday fixture to get the Scout Notes treatment as we look back on the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from north London.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

RECORD BREAKING KANE

Harry Kane (£11.7m) surpassed Jimmy Greaves to become Tottenham Hotspur’s record goalscorer on Sunday, by netting the winner against Man City.

The champions dominated possession in the early stages but looked vulnerable to the counter attack, with Spurs’ goal arriving after Rodri (£5.6m) gave up possession on the edge of his own box, allowing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£5.5m) to tee up Kane.

The England forward came close to adding a second twice in the second half, ending the match with five shots in the box, which included two Opta-defined ‘big chances’. That was at odds with fellow premium Erling Haaland (£12.2m), who failed to have a single attempt on goal for the first time in Man City colours.

As for Kane, the Spurs forward has been absolutely electric this season, scoring 17 goals and blanking in just five of his 22 league outings. His ownership currently sits at 78.66 per cent in the top 100k, but with a decent run of fixtures still to come (see below), that will continue rising, despite a likely blank in Gameweek 28.

“Harry Kane, in his DNA, he has football. He understands football in every moment. He can play in any position. He is a GOAT in this league, in this sport. He is a great example.” – Cristian Stellini

Elsewhere, Emerson Royal’s (£4.9m) performance means we might have to wait a while longer for Pedro Porro’s (£5.0m) first start, having impressed on Sunday.

Defensively, he was superb, with two interceptions, five ball recoveries and six clearances.

“We have seen him play great games. Against City last season it was similar. Today he was a good player and he used to be better when you are winning. He has to improve in other situations but today he was perfect.” – Cristian Stellini on Emerson Royal

DE BRUYNE BENCHED AGAIN

Owners of Kevin De Bruyne (£12.4m) saw the playmaker benched for the second time in three Gameweeks on Sunday, with Julian Alvarez £6.0m) preferred.

Both substitute appearances have arrived against Spurs and their back three/five formation, with Pep Guardiola saying prior to kick-off it was “definitely” a tactical decision.

“We want to defend inside and attack inside, that’s why we put two strikers there to try to put balls to them with Bernardo [Silva] in the first half and second with Kevin [De Bruyne] and be patient.” – Pep Guardiola

De Bruyne was introduced just before the hour mark, replacing Riyad Mahrez (£7.7m), who came closest to scoring in the first half when his shot rattled the crossbar.

On bringing De Bruyne on, Guardiola said:

“I wanted him for the last pass, to find between the lines, he can make one of these actions and that was the reason.” – Pep Guardiola

£12.4m is a lot of money for a player who isn’t a sure starter each week, but his owners will likely keep faith ahead of Man City’s Double Gameweek 23, in the hope he is reinstalled in the starting XI against Aston Villa and Arsenal, both of whom traditionally line-up in back four formations.

It’s also worth noting De Bruyne created more chances (three) than any player from either side despite being on the pitch for just 31 minutes.

Phil Foden (£8.0m), meanwhile, was not involved at all after feeling ill overnight.

“He was there at the hotel. He felt unwell all night – really, really bad.” – Pep Guardiola on Phil Foden

LEWIS AT LEFT-BACK

Rico Lewis (£3.9m) lined up on the left of Man City’s back four against Spurs, which coincided with him completing 90 minutes in a league fixture for the first time this season.

It’s an intriguing development in light of Joao Cancelo’s departure to Bayern Munich, having previously been deployed solely on the right, from where he would often invert into midfield.

There is, of course, still plenty of competition for places even on the left, with Nathan Ake (£5.1m) and Aymeric Laporte (£5.7) both able to perform the role.

However, Lewis’ positional versatility is undoubtedly a plus, adding another string to the youngster’s bow.

Above: Rico Lewis’ average position by Gameweek

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Lloris; Romero, Dier, Davies; Royal, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Perisic (Sessegnon 79); Kulusevski (Sanchez 88), Son (Bissouma 84), Kane

Manchester City: Ederson; Walker, Akanji, Ake, Lewis; Mahrez (De Bruyne 59), Rodri, Bernardo (Gundogan 84), Grealish; Alvarez, Haaland

    Evening all. 0FT, 0.2 ITB:

    Pope
    White Trippier Shaw
    Bruno Rashford Almiron KDB Martinelli
    Haaland Kane

    Subs: Ward, Digne, Bueno, Greenwood

    1) Is anything here worth a -4, if not, what is the next sensible move to make for the week after?

    2) TC Haaland or save?

Any and all advice would be much appreciated as struggling a bit.

I would consider Pope > Ramsdale for a hit, especially given blank GW25. Haaland TC if you haven't used it yet.

    Thoughts on this WC?

    Kepa Leno
    Trips Shaw White Ake Tarkowski
    Odegaard Saka Bruno Rashy Mitoma
    Haaland Kane Mitro

Don't know which City mid to trust so staying out of that one thinking its more of a trap long term.

Solid but quite a benching headache minus GW25.

Wonder if White’s minutes will be a concern soon with Tomiyasu lurking?

I wouold probably be less concerned about being dropped barring injury rather being able to complete 60mins due to tactical or other reasons. White has been pulled off twice in less than 60 in the last 5 games I think

Yeah is a benching headache but think it's a good problem to have. Will probably get rid of Mitro after BGW 25 tbf. Not really sure what to do with extra funds.

This week is a case study in not waiting to make a move you’d make anyway. I knew I wanted Martinelli out. I expected that I’d want to move Saka in. I sat for a day and lost 0.1. Could’ve been another 0.1. While the cap is loose, I wouldn’t want to drop that much value in 36 hours.

The case study isn't complete until we find out whether any Fulham, United or Leeds players get injured or red carded in the matches on Tuesday and Wednesday.

For example, if Bruno gets injured or red carded on Wednesday, then I might want to bring Saka in for Bruno instead of for Andreas.
Or if Mitrovic gets injured or red carded tomorrow then I might want to replace him instead of a defender as an enabler for the Andreas to Saka transfer.
That's why I didn't make the transfer last night, even though I knew that a Saka price rise was likely.

In your case, if Martinelli was your third Arsenal player then your move was a sideways one and you might prefer a completely different transfer if one of your other players gets injured, unless you are prepared to take a hit to do both transfers in that case. The decision on whether or not to make an early transfer might also depend on whether you have enough in the bank to still be able to afford it after the price change.

There are always pros and cons between different risks - either that a player might get injured or that you might miss a price change.

My suggestion would be to skip the third City player and roll FT. You have a great GW23 team when it comes to the possible actual points rather than the number of fixtures, imo - wouldn't touch it this week

Also, I'm quite sure I'd play James over Shaw here. Great job with that squad. Good luck 🙂

If you do feel very inclined to attack the City double, then maybe Shaw to Ake, with James still on your bench

Thanks bud. Tough one, shaw and james both seem great long term options.

How about bruno to a city mid? Maybe Grealish/ bernardo? Plan was to sell bruno soon anyway.

I don't like fixture quantity being the main factor behind transfer decisions. Remember that players (especially from City atm) can blank in both, be benched in one, etc. The good SGW players haul during DGWs too

So I'll put it this way: based on stats, starts, performances and even fixtures... Would you have considered selling Bruno vs Leeds and Leicester for KDB if there were no doubles? You already have Haaland and Mahrez, their main FPL assets since the World cup

            1. SpaceCadet
              • 10 Years
              1 year, 8 months ago

Only considering these moves because of the dgw. James > ake, bruno > grealish, patterson > lewis. None of them seem that convincing though tbh.

Forgot that Patterson to Lewis was possible

That's the least harmful, and lets you keep Shaw. I'd prioritize that or roll

0.2m ITB, so they're locked out of that... Also wouldn't lose Bruno for KDB based on everything we've seen since the World Cup. Their fortunes basically switched from the pre-WC status quo

What's your planned move, bonus lover?

    DZ Update

Pep has subbed Mahrez off early twice in a row while chasing a winning goal: the last Cup game and tonight. Could mean nothing. Could mean something. Could mean everything. I don't know. But the doubt is enough for me to roll FT this week instead of the planned March to Mahrez move. City's wildly swinging weekly form means I expect 3+ goals vs leaky Villa, yet maybe 2 max vs Arsenal, so I'll still cap Haaland, as there's no need to complicate things with him for now. Happy with Rash TC so far. Sanchez remains a good backup GK to Kepa until Brighton's doubles, which might be as early as GWs 26 and 27: https://twitter.com/BenCrellin/status/1620543843123998722?s=20&t=uaKaDXRMVGLxSX8y0UjtGw

    GW23: Roll FT. 6.6m ITB
    .
    Kepa
    Akanji Trippier Schar White
    Mitoma Rashford (VC)Ode Saka
    (C)Haaland Kane
    .
    Sanchez March Toney Shaw

GW24: Schar + Shaw to Spurs (Porro, Perisic, Dier) + Chelsea (James, Badiashile, T.Silva, Chilwell). No rush for either of these moves in GW23, so I'll have one more week of data

BGW25: Toney to Mitro, giving 10 players

BGW28: 8+ starters via 2/3 FTs after GW25, which I'm fine with. This should be when I lose March for Mudryk, but maybe not earlier due to the two possible early Brighton doubles. Gives enough time to scout the best Chelsea attacker, or maybe I'll just get Maddison if none impresses

DGW29: Bench Boost. Looks quite likely to be massive, as seen in the GW29 column on that earlier Ben Crellin tweet. My players who might have single fixtures then have good fixtures as well: Spurs and Mitro

BGW32: FH32 should then be my last chip. Keeping it for that GW as it's the worst for my squad due to blanks and bad fixtures for most of my players who do play. I can handle other BGWs and DGWs more easily, unless something goes horribly wrong

Now gonna mostly watch what happens in GW23 and UCL as I try to pick Chelsea and Spurs defenders. I've been impressed by both defences recently, especially Spurs finally going back to the basics of defending as a team tonight

Lots of new data before my 2 FTs in GW24, so the plan might get another slight update. The game feels a lot more fun to me now, and I do enjoy exchanging ideas here. Good luck, one and all 🙂

Hey ze interesting thought on Mahrez. My planned move this week was MacAllister to mahrez but I too was Questioning the upside. He surely is the best city midfielder pick at the moment though I fear he won't start both games.

It seems like the only obvious transfer for me so might still go for it. It does gain me 2 fixtures but I could see him not starting them. Will be annoying when he's rotated for BGW25

You're selling Mac A, so I'd definitely still make the Mahrez move here. Big Mac isn't guaranteed to play the CAM role we were expecting post-WC when Lallana is fit, so it's a good time to just move on from the punt. Feels like wrong timing to get Bruno or Mudryk now, so I agree that Mahrez is still your obvious move

I like the other moves too, although I'd take James over Tarkowski due to fixtures and attacking threat, especially since you don't have Kepa. Maybe you need the funds for that Watkins move, so Tark still works

I could afford to do those 3 moves (mac to mahrez, Botman to James, Ferguson to Watkins) with 0.2m itb at today's prices so would definitely consider James, Will be a bit heavy in defence but 3mium looks dead so I'll keep an eye on him.

See the link above for BB29's potential

With the way this season's going, I'm fine with 20+ points on my bench every week because there are too many great cheap assets and not many great expensive ones

So I'm just holding out for the biggest DGW

To answer your question more directly: No, I wouldn't BB with Ward and Andreas having single games. I'll also start Schar over Shaw

Which moves would you do with my 1 FT?

    A. Toney > Nketiah

    B. Bruno > Mahrez

    C. Both for a -4 ???

    Cheers

Jesus keeps promising to be back soon, even as Arteta tries to make the Resurrection date seem more ambiguous. Getting Nketiah now feels like a GW25/26 hit, but I think he's capable of getting you enough points in that period. Still, maybe a second Arsenal mid is a better move, or an Arsenal defender if you have 2 mids already

Mahrez has gone from seeming nailed to being subbed off early as Pep chased a winning goal, twice in a row. I talked a bit more about this in the long post above. Bruno's also nowhere near a priority sale before GW25, with those next two fixtures

I understand the Toney frustration, but who will you start if you bench Toney vs Arsenal and roll FT? Or is there someone in your midfield or defence who can go for a third Arsenal asset instead?

Please allow me to join the discussion as I'm consider Toney > Nketiah with Martinelli > KDB as part of it and having concern about the come back of Jesus as well.

        Choices are
        (A) Martinelli + Toney > Nketiah + KDB .. benching Andreas in GW23 and playing in BGW25
        (B) Martinelli + Bruno > Saka + KDB .. benching Toney in GW23 and finding replacement in BGW25

I actually like A more as it allows me to keep Bruno for lee and LEI before BGW25. But Nketiah is the only reason that made me hesitated.

I know Toney has been frustrating, but he isn't a fire sale if you can bench him vs Arsenal

Watkins and Mitro are alternative Toney replacements in GW25, especially when you check Watkins' returns under Emery

Bruno clearly isn't a must-sell until GW25 as well, which you mentioned too

So that leaves Martinelli with the minutes worry, and chasing KDB. With the way KDB's been playing and rotating since the World Cup, he's an easy skip for me. Pep changes things very quickly in that team. That's Martinelli left

By elimination, I'm down to Martinelli to Saka and rolling the second FT or spending it on a weak spot like Bueno, Patterson or Ward

Thank you for sharing ideas. This discussion is really giving foods for thoughts.

Watkins is on my watchlist as well and Villa's run of fixtures from GW25 - 28 look great too.

Given your assessment on KDB, your suggested route to upgrade Marti only and don't touch City mid seems viable.
Just a feeling of not attacking DGW that made me hesitated as I was hurt by being conservative on DGW before.

              Always a pleasure 🙂

I've learnt not to attack DGWs with assets I wouldn't have bought/kept with a single fixture, especially not rotating City assets when Pep has 5 subs. Foden and Cancelo in GW20 were harsh reminders for those who held on. In the same vein, they're always some of the most explosive assets in the game when they do play, and I can't knock those fixtures until GW28

              Good luck either way

WHITE - Trippier - Botman (Martinez, Bueno)
            ODEGAARD - MARTINELLI - Bruno - Rashford - Andreas
            HAALAND - Kane (Toney)

This will be my starting XI. I actually can upgrade Andreas > Mahrez to attack DGW., but hesitated to sell player who will play in BGW25.

Oooohhhh I like Andreas to Mahrez! Andreas doesn't promise much more than 3 points even in the blank, as Wolves aren't pushovers anymore and Fulham is now more defensive than their initial gung-ho approach

This happens every time I watch him. Andreas isn't very clinical

Always looks good on the eye test, and has good assist potential. Just not clinical, so a shift to a defensive focus reduces his haul chances significantly: players who aren't clinical will need that gung-ho style to get a return or two. This is what's also happened to Mitro, more or less

Have you watched us play in any match since GW18? A DGW looks like 2 + 2 points atm. We've looked equally horrible vs top-class opponents, mid-table opposition and relegation candidates

GW25 still 3 weeks away though. For the big club with resources, there could be some changes that turn it around. So, I just prepare to accommodate the opportunities.

Congrats on the Mitoma hit. I did that too

Yeah, I'd roll here. I think you'll need that extra FT to clear out Shaw in GW24, then Bruno and Toney or Bueno (if he's lost his spot) in GW25. I've got eyes on Chelsea and Spurs defenders in the Shaw and Bueno spots, Mudryk/Noni/Saka in the Bruno spot, and Mitro, Johnson or Watkins in the Toney spot

Best move here? Currently have 5-7* players out for 25 so should probably prioritize losing some of them:

    A) Bruno -> KDB
    B) Patterson -> AKE (bench Shaw)
    C) Save FT

    EDERSON
    GABRIEL, Trippier*, Shaw*
    ODEGAARD, MARTINELLI, Bruno*, Rashford*
    HAALAND(c), Kane, Mitrovic

    Kepa, Mitoma*, Bueno*, Patterson*
Bank 3.0m, 1FT (all chips bar TC)

I haven't seen a reason to buy KDB since the World Cup and no reason to sell Bruno before Leeds and Leicester, so it's B or C for me

Since Patterson's injured and not guaranteed to replace the experienced Coleman who's started off on the right foot for Dyche, I'll consider B to be an upgrade to your squad's points potential between now and GW27, making it a good use of that FT imo

Yeah I know what you mean about KDB. I think he’s still been decent at creating chances (which aren’t being put away) but his goal threat is way down. I do expect him to start most games now and for there to be a reaction from City. Fixtures (DGW, nfo, bou) are also pretty excellent, so I’m still tempted with A as he can easily haul in all of them.

Understood. I just feel there are better assets in the game atm, while waiting for KDB to return to pre-WC highs before going back there

Still, it's possible that it happens as early as the Villa game anyway. Good reasoning. Good luck 🙂

A is simple and smooth. Both hits lose good players with good fixtures for good players with good fixtures, so I'd prioritize upgrading the injured guy (who might not walk straight back into the team) to a doubler with good medium-term fixtures, for free

We're already in DGW + BGW season, since GW19

Two reasons I'd use or recommend a wildcard:
                    - Team's in bad shape, with many changes needed to even be able to catch up with the runaway template
                    - BGWs and DGWs ahead, with a clear set of the best assets to choose from, including some who others might miss out on due to blanks: you'll have a healthy enough bench to get Mitoma and ride out GW25 with 10 and GW28 with 9, for instance

                    Both reasons apply here, imo

A more nailed option would be Dier, but I think Perisic pips him to more points via assists

Fixtures and Casemiro. I don't see more than 2 Man U clean sheets between now and GW28

Casemiro would have been needed to keep Leeds in check when they go all out at home

Leicester is a very different beast with Maddison +/- Iheanacho starting, so Casemiro was definitely going to be needed there as well

That leaves 2 likely BGWs, with Liverpool and S'oton matches offering the likeliest haul chances

After all that, take a glance at Spurs fixtures. If Perisic or Porro are too risky for your taste, there's Dier

What about swapping TAA for Cancelo in A, then shifting Cancelo at your leisure as he’s red-flagged? Extra £0.2 to play with

Was exactly my thoughts, but might just risk plating TAA vs Everton? Also extra player for gw25

Yes, I’d WC that bad boy now too. Trippier, Rashford, Haaland, Mitoma and Ward might be the only ones to keep. And those are mostly the ones you’re going to bench in 25.

Agreed, but I'll point something out here: wouldn't keep Ward on a wildcard

I know he's a playing backup and all, but I like the Kepa + Sanchez combo because it covers blanks and DGWs: Kepa plays in all blanks and stays as the main starter until Raya comes in for GW31, while Sanchez has 3 to 5 DGWs coming up, setting up a future BB or rare starts over Kepa during Brighton's doubles

Ward just... Sits in place and might need an upgrade for a BB week. If affordable, I'd just get Kepa - Sanchez and consider Kepa the main starter (don't rotate unless Sanchez has a DGW). That's what I did on WC18

      Ederson, Ward
      Bueno, White, Shaw, Trippier, Schar
      Marty, Saka, Rashford, Mahrez, Andreas
      Martial, Haaland, Kane

2 FT, 4.3 ITB, Not using FH for 25 nor 28

Have been planning White and Andreas out for James and Odegaard. Won't be making a transfer until close to deadline. Next week or the following ditch Martial for someone who plays in 25 at least and 28 all the better.

Anything else strike your fancy for this week?

Just Martinelli to Odegaard for me here, as White is somehow less of a minutes concern than Martinelli atm. See if Bueno returns to the XI in GW23. If he doesn't, he's the one to go for James in GW24. Martial to Watkins seems perfect for GW25 (plays in both, with good fixtures and form)

Maybe Andreas to Mitoma is a nice use of the second FT in GW23, letting you play 3-5-2 with Martial Shaw Bueno benched

Thanks Ze. Yes I need to see if Bueno starts or not. I see what you are saying about Marty, Ode and White. I've had my thoughts set to go three attackers in the middle from Arsenal so need to let go of that for a moment to truly consider your thoughts at least loosely. Although I like Mitoma, I wanted to avoid him because of his up and coming blanks. It will mean I will need to dump Martial as planned and Schar plus Bueno or Shaw if I want to have 10 players (And GK). Thanks again, lots of time to ponder the options.

I agree that three attackers looked like the best deal until Trossard muddied the waters. Jesus' comments about his impending return also affects Nketiah, so it seems we're down to Saka - Ode - Def as reliable options atm. This league evolves quite quickly, so we have to evolve strategies too. I mean, KDB now rotates "for tactical reasons" after almost seven years of the only reason for benching him being a rest. Salah is now a priority sale as Liverpool implodes by the day... Yeah, I'm learning to adapt quickly

            Good luck 🙂

Do u think marti look that bad Ze?...im also thinking to replace him with saka or odegaard...but this move could backfire if marti score

I don't think Martinelli looks bad. I just think Trossard is eating into his minutes, which tends to involve subs before 60 minutes

If there are other moves to make to improve your squad, I'd prioritize them over shifting Martinelli. It's just a move I'd consider because there might not be a better time to do it, as all other transfers between now and GW28 are likely to involve shifting BGW/SGW assets for non-blankers and doublers

Moves I have made or about to.
          I have benching headaches:
          DDG Kepa
Shaw Ake Trippier Gabriel Perisic (Need to get RJames for Shaw)
Mudryk Mitoma Rashford Odegaard Mahrez (Concerns on Mahrez.
          Kane Haaland Nketiah.
          Who would you bench?

I think I would make Martial the priority dependent on news and maybe keep Andreas for GW25. (Just a thought)

      Kepa (Ward)
White Tripper Dalot ( Schar Beuno)
      Saka Ødegaard Rashford Bruno Mitoma
      Kane Haaland ( Mitro)
      2.7M itb
Got rid of Martinelli for Saka.
Do I sell Bruno for Mahrez for a -4. Two weeks ago I would have but now I'm not so sure

Schar starts over Dalot for me. No Casemiro vs Leeds, and no guarantee that Wan-B is dropped: risking a late cameo to boost Dalot's fitness. Schar faces Bournemouth, who are horrific atm

Wouldn't lose Bruno for free until GW25, for anybody in the league atm. You already have the only players I'd consider selling him for. I definitely wouldn't go near City for a hit, and wouldn't think too much about it if keeping a nailed and confident Bruno vs Leeds and Leicester somehow backfires in hindsight

I feel like its time to get Kane, who to sell?
The answer is obviously Havertz but I prefer him longer term over Nketiah

Both might have to go eventually, but I think Havertz might be dropped first with Felix looking a lot sharper, and Mudryk + Noni probably claiming the wings atm

Nketiah is doing very well and might even give Arteta a headache when Jesus returns, so I'd definitely just hold him until then

      Which moves do you prefer:

      a) Andreas & Bruno -> Odgaard & Saka
      b) Andreas & Toney -> Odgaard & Nketiah

Both options lose a GW25 blanker so equal in that regard, but Bruno has signficantly better fixtures in 23 & 24 than Toney and is playing in a better team.

But there is also question marks over Nketiah's long term place in the team, which is pushing me back towards A. Any thoughts / opinions?
