FPL review: Kane’s goals, why De Bruyne was benched

Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City is the second and final Sunday fixture to get the Scout Notes treatment as we look back on the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from north London.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

RECORD BREAKING KANE

Harry Kane (£11.7m) surpassed Jimmy Greaves to become Tottenham Hotspur’s record goalscorer on Sunday, by netting the winner against Man City.

The champions dominated possession in the early stages but looked vulnerable to the counter attack, with Spurs’ goal arriving after Rodri (£5.6m) gave up possession on the edge of his own box, allowing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£5.5m) to tee up Kane.

The England forward came close to adding a second twice in the second half, ending the match with five shots in the box, which included two Opta-defined ‘big chances’. That was at odds with fellow premium Erling Haaland (£12.2m), who failed to have a single attempt on goal for the first time in Man City colours.

As for Kane, the Spurs forward has been absolutely electric this season, scoring 17 goals and blanking in just five of his 22 league outings. His ownership currently sits at 78.66 per cent in the top 100k, but with a decent run of fixtures still to come (see below), that will continue rising, despite a likely blank in Gameweek 28.

“Harry Kane, in his DNA, he has football. He understands football in every moment. He can play in any position. He is a GOAT in this league, in this sport. He is a great example.” – Cristian Stellini

Elsewhere, Emerson Royal’s (£4.9m) performance means we might have to wait a while longer for Pedro Porro’s (£5.0m) first start, having impressed on Sunday.

Defensively, he was superb, with two interceptions, five ball recoveries and six clearances.

“We have seen him play great games. Against City last season it was similar. Today he was a good player and he used to be better when you are winning. He has to improve in other situations but today he was perfect.” – Cristian Stellini on Emerson Royal

DE BRUYNE BENCHED AGAIN

Owners of Kevin De Bruyne (£12.4m) saw the playmaker benched for the second time in three Gameweeks on Sunday, with Julian Alvarez £6.0m) preferred.

Both substitute appearances have arrived against Spurs and their back three/five formation, with Pep Guardiola saying prior to kick-off it was “definitely” a tactical decision.

“We want to defend inside and attack inside, that’s why we put two strikers there to try to put balls to them with Bernardo [Silva] in the first half and second with Kevin [De Bruyne] and be patient.” – Pep Guardiola

De Bruyne was introduced just before the hour mark, replacing Riyad Mahrez (£7.7m), who came closest to scoring in the first half when his shot rattled the crossbar.

On bringing De Bruyne on, Guardiola said:

“I wanted him for the last pass, to find between the lines, he can make one of these actions and that was the reason.” – Pep Guardiola

£12.4m is a lot of money for a player who isn’t a sure starter each week, but his owners will likely keep faith ahead of Man City’s Double Gameweek 23, in the hope he is reinstalled in the starting XI against Aston Villa and Arsenal, both of whom traditionally line-up in back four formations.

It’s also worth noting De Bruyne created more chances (three) than any player from either side despite being on the pitch for just 31 minutes.

Phil Foden (£8.0m), meanwhile, was not involved at all after feeling ill overnight.

“He was there at the hotel. He felt unwell all night – really, really bad.” – Pep Guardiola on Phil Foden

LEWIS AT LEFT-BACK

Rico Lewis (£3.9m) lined up on the left of Man City’s back four against Spurs, which coincided with him completing 90 minutes in a league fixture for the first time this season.

It’s an intriguing development in light of Joao Cancelo’s departure to Bayern Munich, having previously been deployed solely on the right, from where he would often invert into midfield.

There is, of course, still plenty of competition for places even on the left, with Nathan Ake (£5.1m) and Aymeric Laporte (£5.7) both able to perform the role.

However, Lewis’ positional versatility is undoubtedly a plus, adding another string to the youngster’s bow.

Above: Rico Lewis’ average position by Gameweek

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Lloris; Romero, Dier, Davies; Royal, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Perisic (Sessegnon 79); Kulusevski (Sanchez 88), Son (Bissouma 84), Kane

Manchester City: Ederson; Walker, Akanji, Ake, Lewis; Mahrez (De Bruyne 59), Rodri, Bernardo (Gundogan 84), Grealish; Alvarez, Haaland

Everytime City lose a game, they will bang a few in the next game.

    True?

I think it's more that they usually bang a few in every game, regardless. After a big game, people usually get carried away. City have historically struggled against top teams that play on the counter attack like Spurs and United. So it'll likely be back to the norm next week.

Unai Emery's Villa aren't exactly whipping boys, but it should be a comfortable win. City aren't their usual self, but despite all the doom talk, they're still on of the best teams in the league, and should still win comfortably.

I'm keeping KDB, and will captain Haaland. Haven't decided if I want a third.

Would you roll the below? 1FT lots in the bank!

    Maybe...

    A. Martielli > Odegaard
    B. Martinelli > Saka

    Kepa / Ward

    Trippier / Schar / Shaw / White / Bueno

    Bruno / Rashford / Mahrez / Martinelli / Mitoma

    Kane / Haaland / Nketiah

Five days to go but already wondering which transfers to do.

Got 2 FT and 0.2 itb

    Kepa
    Trippier - White - Shaw
    KDB - Saka - Rashford - Almiron
    Haaland - Kane - Nketiah

    Ward - Perisic - Andreas - Patterson

A penny for your thoughts. I’m thinking just to get a replacement for Almiron and/or Patterson this GW. The rest looks fine to me.

    Kepa
    Trippier White Lewis
KDB Rashford Odegaard Martinelli Bruno F
    Kane Haaland

Ward Shaw Gnonto Bueno (1FT, 0.0itb)

    A - KDB ➡ Mahrez
    B - KDB & Martinelli ➡ Mahrez & Saka (-4)

    D - Save transfer

Hiya guys. Doing some early tinkering. Bench is a mess and already 100% sure I have to take at least 1 hit to field full 11 in GW25.

    1ft and 2.6itb

    Ederson
    GABRIEL Trippier Botman Shaw
    ODEGAARD MARTINELLI Bruno Rashford
    HAALAND Kane

    Ward; Ferguson, Bueno, Rodrigo*

    A. Bruno -> KDB
    B. Martinelli, Bruno -> Saka, Mahrez (-4)
    C. Other?

    1. mrelpea
      • 8 Years

      C. I wouldn’t worry about getting a full 11 for gw25. I’m going to work towards a solid/‘as sure as you can get 10 as I’ll want Bruno, rashford, trips and shaw in my team after. I’d do botman to Gabriel or ake/akinji this gameweek, roll your gw24 transfer and assess the situation with two FT’s

    1) Almiron -> Mahrez (means benching Mitro or Martinelli)
    2) Bruno -> KDB (means benching Almiron)
    3) Save

    (1FT, 2.9 itb)

    Kepa
    Trippier/Shaw/White
    Bruno/Rashford/Odegaard/Martinelli
    Haaland/Kane/Mitro

    Bench: Ward, Mings, Bueno, Almiron

    Thinking of WC.

    Current team, 4.1m itb:

    Kepa-Ward
    Trippier-Botman-Akanji-Bueno-Patterson
    Rash-Bruno-KDB-Mitoma-Martinelli
    Haaland-Toney-Martial

    WC team, something like this:
    Kepa-Sa
    Trippier-Botman-Ake-Tarkowski-Kilman
    Rash-Saka-Odegaard-Mitoma-Mahrez
    Haaland-Kane-Nketiah
    2.9m itb.
Is it worth wildcarding or rather not? I really want to get both Saka and Ode IN and Martinelli OUT, also Kane IN.

    1. Andreas to Mahrez (bench toney but keep)

    2. Toney to Nketiah (toney will be benched if I do 1 will miss gw25. And i will triple up arsenal)

    Choose and opinion please

    Kepa
    White Shaw Trippier
    KDB Bruno Rashford Martinelli Andreas
    Haaland Nketiah

    (Ward Gnonto Cancelo* Patterson)
    1 FT & 2.5m

    A) Cancelo & Andreas ➡️ Reece & Mahrez -4
    B) Cancelo & Martinelli ➡️ Ake/Reece & Saka -4
    C) Martinelli & Andreas ➡️ Odegaard & Mitoma -4

    Thoughts on this lot?
Was on A first but not confident about Mahrez now with CL coming up and it might be a week or two early for James.
Like the look of B mostly because I feel Saka is the best option to own out of these lot but I would probably want James over Ake long term.
C looks a solid option but at the cost of Odegaard over Saka and one less player (will have 10) for BGW25 as I wont sell Mitoma, Tripps, Shaw & Rash.

What is everyone’s order of preference of arsenal attackers? For me it’s:-
    1)Saka
    2)Nketiah
    3Odegaard
Saka vs nketiah is very close for me as nketiah is much cheaper and he’s getting almost all the big chances for arsenal

I will be in pretty crap shape for blanks in 25 but here is my team.
The transfer will be Almiron to Saka.
    De Gea
    Trippier Botman Walker
    KDB Martinelli Saka Fernandes Rashford
    Mitrovic Haaland

Ward. Mee / Bueno / Greenwood

Future transfers will be KDB to Mitoma and Greenwood to Kane but not yet.
I don't want to wildcard particularly but I am tinkering with a potential draft. If I go into gw25 with only about 6-7 players, so be it.

    1. artvandelay316

Surely with Newcastle and MUN not looking too tight at the back now, it makes sense to lose at least Botman and DeGea before the blank? That would give a few more players at least.

Ok, for me, no goals 7 games in a row was getting freakish, had to end at some point. Still happy to stick with double defence even through the BGW

              • 3 Years

I agree that is unusual and I shouldn't expect that to happen in general. Had it not been for the blanks I would also keep, but with the blanks it seems that double NEW defence is going to cause an unnecessary problem for many when there could be a better short-term option. If you can navigate it without losing, even better.

In my opinion they are just as tight as they have been pretty all season. Just so happens the opposition has been more clinical in past couple of games so they have conceded. Do you imagine Newcastle have not surrendered any chances a all over the past & weeks or so. Of course they have its just that the opposition missed the chances. Their defence is not worse just because they conceded a goal. A better barometer (must be nautical!) for a defence is chances created against. Conceding the odd goal here and there is just part and parcel of football. All teams concede chances, it’s just a how many they concede.

I will be keeping a Newcastle double up given that practically all engaged managers own Trippier. When he scores big, there is no advantage gained from clean sheet etc unless you have Pope or Botman, Schar, Burn etc.

Only have 1 FT this week so would have to take a hit for another player, which team that doubles would you triple up on:

    1 - Arsenal - own Martinelli & Saliba
2- Man City - own Haaland

Looking at possibly Nketiah & a Man City player (possibly Mahrez)

You can safely predict starters for Arsenal (barring big surprises). The same cannot be said for tinkering Pep and his bizarre, inconsistent line ups. I'd go for triple Arsenal.

It's a coin toss but probably B for me because of pens, would feel more comfortable with Saka as captain

Wildcard activated last night despite holding 2 FT.

    Fab/Kepa
    Gabriel/Ake/James/Trippier/Tarkowski
    Saka/Odegaard/Grealish/Rashford/Mitoma
    Kane/Haaland/Mitro

Anything wrong with this? Would this be considered the new template? (1 m itb so Grealish could be Mahrez but I want that money for planning reasons)

Fabianski is certainly not template, although I nearly went for him on restart. Seems right on the edge of becoming a really strong option with WHU's low xGC and relatively high shots conceded, if he can just turn a few more into CS.

Don't know about Grealish - looks nailed-ish & is playing quite well but is he going to suddenly turn that into FPL points? I would maybe go for Maddison in that spot.

Rest looks more template. I would still back Mitrovic for now if not going for Nketiah

Nice thoughts, ty. Yeah forgot about Fab when I mentioned template, but, if wildcarding, that is a keeper combo that rotates well for the entire season (based on scheduled sgw) and both are good in their own right. Money not really an issue as well this season so seems worth trying to "guess" which keepers will be useful down the line. Done with Ward basically 🙂

In a dreamworld where nobody gets injured, Ake and Grealish will be benched in 24 anyway and then the money itb allows me to either go Ake to Chilwell or Grealish to Gakpo if Lpool get a double (and their act together). Maddison a good shout too. Can't work out if I can afford in 25 for Grealish but would be close. Maybe Akanji instead of Ake would be the difference.

Anyone else had a plan to reverse the Kdb > Bruno transfer for next week? Not sure what to do after he was benched again.

Waiting on to see how we perform vs Leeds without Casemiro, based on which I am looking to get Mahrez for Bruno as my 2nd city asset.

Not a bad plan. If Bruno looks good I might actually keep him. Never know if Marhrez starts both either.

I'd rather pay my money and take my chances on Mahrez or even Foden. KDB had a poor World Cup and his form hasn't picked up since then (2 assists in City's 7 league games since then would be underwhelming for someone half his price).

    Ederson*
    Zinchenko* White* Trippier
    Mahrez* Odegaard* Bruno Rashford Mitoma
    Haaland(C)* Kane

    (Meslier Schär Shaw Gnonto)
    1FT & 2,7m

    White + Bruno -> James/Tarkowski + Saka (-4)
Gives me double Arsenal attack and extra player for GW25

    Thoughts on this?

Looks good, leaves you with minimal surgery to get through week 25 and Saka could go off in a double. Only q mark is whether we can trust James again.

Yesterday's game went perfect as it could for Haaland triple captainers dgw23. Just bad enough to sway away other people who would TC him, maybe even sway it enough that someone captains Arsenal players, but enough to make Guardiola mad and demand a strong answer vs Villa and Arsenal, which will probably result in him getting goals in both games

Hopefully he benches Weghorst at plays Rashford up front against Leeds.

I think without Casemiro we will need Weghorst more than before, in case we can't pass though the midfield, we may have to hop on to the front man and go from there, I feel we will struggle against Leeds early pressing without Casemiro and will opt to go more direct than usual.

Hmm I would imagine Rashford on the counter would be a better weapon. Guess he can still find space wide, but he looked a bit deep in the last game imo

After losing four goals against Leicester, I suspect Emery will be demanding a lot more effort from his defenders this coming weekend. In Villa's previous four games, they only conceded two goals and kept two clean sheets (both away from home). I still think City will win that game narrowly but my money will be on Arsenal beating them 1-0 at Emirates.

Another two 2 pointers incoming for Haaland to go along with the three he's got in his last five games (or seven if you include the cups) I'm afraid. 😀

Looking forwards to next week, what would be my best moves here? Got 3.5m in the bank (Did KDB > Bruno for this week) looking at Toney > Nketiah, and Almiron > Mahrez for -4? Does that look okay or is there anything else you would do here. Also very tempted to hit the BB button with those fixtures sat on the bench..

    Kepa
    White - Akanji - Trippier
    Almiron - Martinelli - Rashford - Bruno
    Kane - Toney - Haaland

    Ward - Shaw - Botman - Andreas
