Captain Sensible

Toney v Brighton midfielders: Who is the best captain for FPL Gameweek 27?

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are once again seeing “double” as four teams – Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford, Crystal Palace, and Southampton – play twice in Double Gameweek 27.

In an open captaincy week, Ivan Toney (£7.8m) and a trio of Brighton assets assume the role of chief protagonists, with alternative options from Palace, Southampton, and a quartet of single fixture heavyweights providing the supporting cast in this edition of the armband argument.

As usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to highlight which assets have the best chance of hauling.

First, we will assess the fallout of the captain poll, before then analysing the best options, the Rate My Team (RMT) points projections and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 GMT deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

The captain poll has a distinctly Double Gameweek feel, with Brentford’s Ivan Toney topping the charts for the first time this season, backed by a mite over four-tenths of the total votes cast by users at the time of writing.

Providing stiff competition is Brighton’s wing-wizard Kaoru Mitoma (£5.5m) who sits currently in second place, backed by just over one in four of our users.

Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) occupies third place with 6.41% of the vote, followed by Erling Haaland (£12.2m) and Alexis Mac Allister (£5.4m) further back.

DOUBLE GAMEWEEK CANDIDATES

IVAN TONEY

Ivan Toney converted from the penalty spot against Fulham on Monday night – his 15th goal of the season – to continue a prolific campaign for the Bees talisman.

Toney is the third-highest scoring forward in Fantasy – with his tally sitting at 130 points for 2022/23 – and places in the top six for attacking returns (18) this season.

Notably, Toney has received 26 big chances this season, a total that only Erling Haaland (40) can better.

However, over the last six matches, Toney’s underlying numbers have underwhelmed, ranking joint-seventh best for goal attempts (19), with his seven shots on target bettered by ten other players.

In those half-dozen matches, Toney ranks ninth-best in the division for non-penalty involvement (NPxGI, 3.28), a tally bettered by two immediate captaincy rivals – Alexis Mac Allister and Solly March.

However, set pieces heighten Toney’s appeal, with the penalty supremo converting his 10th Premier League career spot-kick against the Cottagers.

Toney has also registered the most set-piece attempts (23) for Thomas Frank’s side and highlighted his free-kick potential when smashing the woodwork in the 35th minute against Fulham.

Above: Ivan Toney places second for big chances received (26) this term – a tally bettered by only Erling Haaland (40)

Brentford travel to face an Everton side winless in three Premier League matches, following their initial “new manager bounce” under Sean Dyche. Despite two clean sheets over the last six matches, the Toffees still rank sixth worst for expected goals conceded (xGC, 9.21) over the period.

Southampton host Thomas Frank’s side in the second fixture of Double Gameweek 27, with the Saints buoyant since the appointment of new manager Ruben Selles.

The Spaniard has led Southampton to consecutive Premier League wins – over Leicester City and Chelsea – registering two clean sheets in the process.

However, the Saints have been poor defensively ranking sixth worst for non-penalty expected goals conceded (NPxGC, 9.9) over the last six matches.

I think he will get it back, the number one spot. I just don’t know if it will be in time for 29 and my BB.

This is based purely on my own opinion ha mostly because I think Steele has not broken into the team in for ur years for a reason

    Under the radar differentials?
Iheanacho - With Maddison still ‘nursing’ an ‘ongoing problem’ and Barnes not 100% starting, should we not be considering Kelechi in as the Leicester attacker in our DGW squads? He could have hauled in their last match given the chances he had.

Ings/Bowen - With the Hammers scrapping for survival and with two encouraging home fixtures in DGW 29, I think either Ings and/or Bowen could go well in those fixtures.

    But what’s everyone else’s thoughts?

Nacho I am considering bringing in for GW28.

Bowen I would like to come good - met him once, very polite young man - but West Ham really are not to be trusted.

Am considering some Bournemouth or Forest action next week.

Brennan Johnson in my thoughts for DGW29. Maybe him ahead of Iheanacho and Ings as more guaranteed to start every match?

Definitely in my thoughts too. Will likely get him or Watkins in for Kane next week or GW29

I got Iheanacho last week. Sounds like Rodgers was fairly happy with the performance if not the result so hopefully he keeps his place. I'm benching him this week but plan to keep for a while as long as Maddison is fit.

WHU I'm not sure. At least the GW29 fixtures are at home, but Southampton maybe improving defensively & Newcastle is still not a fixture I'd target with attackers. Think I'd rather have a WHU defender for these games. Also they were really dreadful against Brighton, couldn't get into the game at all.

Was sooo frustrating watching the Lei-Sou game. Maddison was so close to hauling. His teammates really squandered a bunch of chances: both to finish off his assists and/or put him through on goal. Nacho was the worst culprit. Hopefully was just an off day for him.

I agree. We all got unlucky owners with Maddison last week and I benched mitoma for him lol

I guess no Maddison probably means lack of chances and thus less goals for Iheanacho. Could be a decent punt for next few weeks though.

Ings/Bowen - Not consistent enough. Can go on a long run of blanks. Fixtures arent elite either.

Good points everyone - thanks for your thoughts. Maybe doubling-up on WHU attack isn’t the way to go - and their defence is improving too.

Maddison is "declaring himself fit... on the pitch" and "available". Maybe not 100% but I think its wrong to assume "no Maddison"

Problem I find with differentials (Watkins, Maddison, Solomon, Gnonto, Johnson, Bowen) is that you usually need their team to be on it too. To either supply them or finish off their chances. And these sorts of differentials usually play for (in FPL terms) mediocre teams. Rare that someone will rip through a team all by themselves.

I’ve been having a great time with Johnson for the past couple of months - apart from the pain of benching him last week. For me now Cooper has had time with the players Forest are now a mid table team that are strong at home so am also considering Gibbs-White when I tire of Brighton midfielders

        Yes, they have more games.
Yes, they have more opportunity for points.
No, that doesn't guarantee the outcome.

I guess I'm looking for more of discussion on the likelihood of Brentford getting cleansheets as that is probably the crucial element. I like Shaw for this week and he could 'easily' get double figures, which would negate much of Brentford's double. Gakpo versus Mitoma is also pretty tight, despite the doubles. Hence why I'm asking the question. Looking for any insight on these. If someone knew that Gakpo is likely to be rotated for instance, then it makes the decision easier. Equally if match postponements are beyond rumour then that impacts things. Is Mee close to being suspended (i.e. if he picks up a yellow could be banned). This is the discussion I'm trying to drive, rather than more games = more points.

              • 15 Years

I have Gakpo first sub, starting Saka, Rashford, Mitoma and MacAllistair.

              Don’t feel easy about it.

Part of the reason I'm reluctant to WC is because I will be getting rid of Gakpo. Next week? Fine. However this week could be equally as painful as last week (not expecting 7-0, rather just losing points).

I could in theory actually have the same midfield as you with my 2FT and then not have Toney (or could get him for -4). But I would be benching someone I don't want to bench and in all likelihood leaving points on the table.

I also don't feel very confident in Brentford cleansheet. I think Raya is good for save points and Mee carries a goal threat. But not relying on CS alone from Brentford.

                Difficult decision.

Yep, I’ve gone for Steele over Raya because of the fixtures and the fact I have a playing gk in 28 (Ward), but I may still FH.

Benching Gakpo, Gabriel and Tete at the moment and considering a -4 to sell Tete for a DGWer and BB this week. So tough.

To be fair, I could play Steele over Raya. Perhaps that leans it in favour of the DGWers as then I'm not relying on Brentford CS so much.

Brentford not particulalry good away but Soton and Everton are rubbish. Mitoma is incredibly exclusive, Leeds, if they are not saved by a blizzard are poor and Derby with Palace could be explosive. Mee only had a couple of yellows this season I believe so nothing to worry about there. But you know all this.

                Thank you.

Southampton may be rubbish, but they aren't goal shy. Neither are Everton - they've only struggled against the teams you would expect them to struggle.

Mitoma definitely has a higher ceiling, but as you say it doesn't really inspire trust. But neither does Gakpo. I will say this, though. If they both had one fixture, I would go with Gakpo quite comfortably.

And Mee versus Shaw could go either way. Depends which United turn up.

Brentford much less likely to keep clean sheets away but as Fulchester says trying to pinpoint points to a specific player in 1 or 2 games is unpredictable.

Over 6 games or so then the pattern can play out more.

Indeed, however if I don't WC this week, it will be next week and so will ultimately have the same players over a long time period, just not this week!

Brentford CS just feels shaky. Sure Raya can get 6 points without a CS, however then there's not much additional advantage.

As H2H for each player, I think it is quite tight.

I haven’t a clue who to bench this week tbh… Feels wrong benching Kane or Haaland, but then I guess it’s Martinelli or Saka ?

    Raya
    Davies Estupinan Mee
    Saka Martinelli Rashford March Mitoma
    Haaland Toney

    Ward Kane Trippier Gabriel

    1. Tonyawesome69
      • 5 Years

      Davies over Trippier and Gabriel?

What do you think of Martinelli as a FPL pick starting CF and no Trossard LW to interchange with?

      1. joshphillips465

I can see Fulham scoring, Trippier/Newcastle haven’t sold me in recent weeks defensively and Spurs at home are usually* more solid.

That’s a fair point, but he is amongst the goals a lot more lately… Potentially no Odegaard too

Rashford > Saka > Martinelli is my order of preference for the single GW mids, I wouldn't bench Kane or Haaland and the rest are your doublers

Benching Kane against Forest and the best FB in the PL against Wolves does not sound like a good idea at all.

Kane is just there atm, I don’t plan on benching him. Trippier vs Davies is a coin flip for me at the moment, but I get what you’re saying

Which I guess screams bench boost but I wanted that for GW29, where I think it makes more sense… It’s basically Trips/Davies and bench one of the Arsenal boys… Might just coin flip both

              • 7 Years

In fairness, Forest will put 10 men behind the ball so unlikely they will score so Davies decent shout but shame to bench Trippier.

Trippier more likely to get attacking returns, and Wolves not great offensively… Probably is Trippier really, especially if he does haul because everyone in my league will play him… Hmm.

I'm intrigued why people are suggesting benching Marti over Saka. I think it's quite tight. If Trossard is fit, I would play Marti. He has shown in recent weeks that he links up very well with Tross as a false 9, and has 4 goals in last 5 games.

Maybe. Like the idea of rolling so I can switch out a blanker in 28 and still have 2FT going into 29. Think Martinelli could be a good pick if he's up top

          yeah

I'm getting Martenelli in this week with gw28 in mind rather than a third Brighton player.

I know everyone loves a double but they are dangerous diversions.

The let down from Nunez in the Liverpool double helped drive last week's wildcard to set up for this sequence and many ditched Salah in the process.

          It's all too short term.

Possibly yeah. Just not sure how he does without Trossard. I didn't watch the game last night which looked like Nelson LW and Martinelli CF.

Question: I have had Alisson for several weeks. I am wildcarding today and bringing in Raya for Ward but I am tempted to hold onto Alisson for my BB29. He has been bringing in the points - even against teams where its not expected.

    Will i hold Alisson?

      I don't know, will you?

If it was me, I would want to be comfortable by GK duo saw me through to the end of the season - not many FT left and booking one in for a GK transfer is less than ideal

    2. Tonyawesome69
      • 5 Years

Depends on the GK rotation you have with Raya/Alisson and if you have BB chip. Raya/Alisson seems a lot of money tied up on the GK combo

Wildcarders/those who have the luxury of a keeper transfer remember that if you trust Steele to keep his place (big if) you have a route to 2x DGW points plus you get a keeper sub in 28 so you don't have to worry about a non-playing outfield player.

Might make the difference between fielding 10 and 11 which is potentially worth 2+ points in itself.
