FPL notes: Man City rotation, Mitoma, Mac Allister’s creativity

The big Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Sunday’s three fixtures are covered in our Scout Notes.

All the key stats from the day’s football, from bonus points to expected goals (xG), can be found here.

Any numbers and graphics you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data from every single Premier League fixture.

PEP ROTATES

With the title already sewn up, Pep Guardiola opted to rotate pretty much all of his key players on Sunday, such as Erling Haaland (£12.4m), Kevin De Bruyne (£12.2m), Ederson (£5.4m) and Jack Grealish (£7.1m).

There were nine changes in total to the team that thrashed Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, with only defenders Kyle Walker (£4.7m) and Manuel Akanji (£5.1m) keeping their places.

In typical Pep fashion, those coming in included Cole Palmer (£4.2m) on his less-favoured left side, Rico Lewis (£3.7m) in midfield and Phil Foden (£8.0m) – who enjoyed plenty of the ball – playing off Julian Alvarez (£6.1m) in the ‘De Bruyne’ role.

Alvarez scored the game’s only goal and came close to adding a second, only for it to be ruled out by VAR, as Riyad Mahrez (£7.5m) used his arm during the build-up.

Haaland was introduced on 74 minutes – replacing Mahrez – and he didn’t have to wait long for his first sight of goal, but the Norwegian international dragged his shot wide of the post. That was, however, his only attempt.

The big question now is do Pep’s key players return for the midweek trip to Brighton and Hove Albion, or will he allow further rest time in light of Sunday’s celebrations?

“I have been so demanding in this period. We lift the trophy so to think of going to Brighton is so exhausting. We know how difficult they are. The players have to celebrate otherwise it makes no sense. We will arrive with time to rest mentally for the two finals against United and Inter.

We have to play two more games. I said enjoy it but be careful because we will destruct what we have done in these competitions.

Now I have the feeling that all of us are a little bit tired because it’s been a long season. Now it’s the tendency to think it’s done. Still we have a tough game at Brighton and Brentford, hopefully it can pass quick and then we have seven days to prepare United and Inter.” – Pep Guardiola

As for Chelsea, a lot of the time it felt like they were going through the motions, ahead of Mauricio Pochettino’s rumoured arrival in the summer.

Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.6m) returned in goal but was unusually quiet, making just one save. Instead, it was Manchester City’s keeper Stefan Ortega (£3.7m) who was the busier of the two, registering two save points and, in turn, maximum bonus.

MITOMA’S MISSED CHANCES

Kaoru Mitoma (£5.7m) had two decent chances to put Brighton ahead at the Amex on Sunday, but once again lacked the necessary composure to score.

It means the Japan international has now failed to find the net in each of his last 10 league outings, a period in which he’s missed six Opta-defined ‘big chances’ and is averaging just 3.0 points per start.

He did, at least, supply the assist for Evan Ferguson’s (£4.6m) second against Southampton with a beautiful pass, one of four created chances on the day.

CREATIVE MAC ALLISTER

However, it was Alexis Mac Allister (£5.6m) on his return to the line-up who was Albion’s key creator.

Freed up by Joel Veltman’s (£4.6m) return to play in the ‘hole’, the Argentine produced his first assist since Gameweek 26, creating a whopping seven chances, the most he’s managed in a single match all season.

Above: Alexis Mac Allister’s touch heatmap v Southampton on Sunday

As for Ferguson, he registered five shots in the box and looked a real threat in comparison to fellow budget forward Julio Enciso (£4.6m), who was ineffective and hooked at half-time.

“Ferguson’s improvement has been incredible. He’s playing like an old player but he is only 18. There is a good dressing room with the mentality to help all our younger players, Gilmour, Colwill, Enciso and Buonanotte – we are a very strong team.” – Roberto De Zerbi

Southampton, meanwhile, conceded another three goals at Brighton, taking their tally to 26 in their last 10 games. Next up is Liverpool in Gameweek 38, with a certain Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) set to be a popular captain pick.

MOYES: “THE SHACKLES WERE OFF…”

Jarrod Bowen (£8.0m) produced a goal and assist as Leeds United’s Premier League survival hopes were dealt a huge blow in a 3-1 defeat.

The winger has been in much better form since the restart, with 12 attacking returns from 21 starts, and could be a decent differential shout in Gameweek 38, when West Ham United visit Leicester City, who are without a clean sheet in their last 20 matches.

David Moyes sprung a surprise by naming a strong starting XI on Sunday. Even though he made six changes from Thursday’s win over AZ Alkmaar, Declan Rice (£4.7m), Bowen and Lucas Paqueta (£5.9m) – who has really grown into his role in recent months – all kept their place.

The Brazilian went close to scoring and almost got a second assist when he played in centre-forward Danny Ings (£6.3m), showing plenty of creativity and flair from the middle.

“The shackles were off and Paqueta was fantastic.” – David Moyes

Things looked ominous for West Ham when Rodrigo (£6.3m) put the visitors ahead, but Leeds were unable to build on their lead, with the Spaniard and Patrick Bamford (£7.1m) picking up unfortunate injuries.

The defeat means the Whites will be relegated if they fail to beat Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 38, but even that will not be enough if Everton win their final game against Bournemouth or Leicester pick up four points from their last two matches.

“Both of them are struggling badly. Rodrigo with a plantar fascia and Bamford with a hamstring. The impact of the subs I was expecting wasn’t there. I don’t think any of the subs made a difference today.” – Sam Allardyce

Flip a coin. I think it depends on what Pep is doing, he's either giving this whole week to the B team so you'll see a similar team to yesterday and then full strength v Brentford, or he just gave the main team one game to rest and will play them all in the next two games

I think it's the former, that they rest this week and it's the squad players against Brighton again.

The quote indicates that but he can change his mind by Wednesday.

      I'm going to say yes.
      Ederson v Brighton for rhythm.
Carson v Brentford for baldness/lols/participation trophy
Ederson or Ortega in FA cup final
      Ederson v Internazionale

And then a serious discussion over the summer about whether Ortega should take more games or become de facto no 1.

I was thinking pep would play full strength Vs Brighton.. then rest against Brentford ready for the two cup games.. but who knows with pep hey?!

That would be my thinking too simply based on game order in schedules.
Hard to predict though, it being Pep. The argument for going full strength against Brentford is that their playing style will mirror what Inter will do in UCL final, so might want to treat that as the UCL practice session.

Why woudl you bench a Brighton player in a DGW. Surely the trasnfers that lead you to having him in your team was because he had these DGW's.

They have had so many doubles, this week wasn't particularly one to target, and his output has dropped off drastically.

I'll get him off the bench if Rashford doesn't play the next game

A lot of people suggesting Ederson, but I think that's not quite right considering the question is about start of the seaon.

Ederson has been disappointing for those of us who brought him in min-season/recently to attack the double-gameweeks, but I don't think he would have been majorly considered at the start of the season. The Ward/Iverson pairing was probably the biggest disappointment from those we were considering at the start. Possibly Sanchez.

      Ward / Iversen
      James Perisic Robertson Cancelo
      Mount Son Neto Foden
      Darwin Jesus

Genuinely thought the 4.0 GK pairings could break the game.

Defence picks itself really, we all had such high hopes for the attacking full backs and it just hasn’t translated into points due to rotation / injuries / transfers (!)

Son was always overpriced at £12m but I don’t think anyone could have foreseen the poor season he’s had. Mount was the worst of the £8.0m options on offer to us. Neto is another pre season bandwagon to add to the fire and never speak of again. Foden flirted with being an elite option for us and then was unceremoniously dropped, adding to the disappointment.

Up front, Nunez has had an absolute shocker but we’ve all been there and hoped he’d make good on his underlying numbers, but he hasn’t. Jesus got that huge haul early on for his 80% ownership, but really hasn’t been a factor for us since, especially with the injury.

On Free Hit, and currently 100pts behind. Looking for a lot of Differentials

    Currently on:
    Ramsdale (Ortega)
    Gabriel, Tarkowski, Shaw (Lewis, Tsimikas)
Salah (vc), Maddison, Odegaard, Bruno, Eze
    Kane (c), Haaland, (Ferguson)

Anyone else i should be considering (Not sure about double Arsenal defense)?
Firminio instead of Haaland - he normally likes to score against Southampton.
Could do Son instead of Kane..Too many decisions. No doubt will pick all the wrong ones anyway..

Get Firmino instead of Haaland and get Trent instead for Tsimikas and captain Treant maybe

I'd be going a lot more differential on FH38 if I was chasing.
      No Arsenal, except mybe Nelson
      Porro/Perisic in defence
Play Tsimikas and Firminho only from Liverpool
Definitely play Ortega in goal, Bps magnet.
I'd prefer a McNeil or Eze or Son over Fernandes, and I'd prefer a Vardy/Mitro over a Haaland.

I noticed the fpl godfather - Mark Sutherns has mirrored his Forest team and been flying in the run in. Time or writing 150k plus OR

Somehow about 40 points ahead of my rank for instance out of nowhere.

At one stage I was feeling sorry for this fella. But he obviously knows what he is doing, 'form is temporary class is permanent' as they say.

He's still got a crap rank and has made terrible decisions all season. A few lucky decisions when he's forced to go differential because he's forgotten how to play FPL

So when he's having a mare he's unlucky but when he gets a few good gwks he's great again. He's finished as a top FPL player. Bookmark this baby

Well let's test the theory. Bookmark it. Just because you are all weirdly obsessed over him it doesn't make what I am saying not true. He's a terrible decision maker and he's 186 k not 150k. Are we glorifying near 200k OR now just because he used to be good before he failed to adapt to the changes?

There is no obsession. I am just pointing out how the former owner of this site has improved dramatically following a a poor start. Which is a sign for sticking with it. And could be insprational for newer players playing the game. I would view 186k as a great OR especially considering the amount who play the game these days and the poor start Mr Sutherns had, That is all.
I did not think such an inoffensive post would engender such a vicious reaction. People who normal do such things have underlying issues, they feel the need to attack. But each to their own.

You say he has made terrible decisions all season, which would imply you are following his moves closely. Or to put it another way, obsessing.

Although I don't follow his moves nearly as closely as you do, he has always made moves based on sound logic, a lot of the time, they work out (his FPL history supports this) This season, not so much, at least not in the first half of the season.

And what changes in particular has he failed to adapt to?

Again not true that seems to be a logic fallcy you have created to suit your narrative.
I merely watch the blackbox podcast and the 'mods and cons' league is free to view - which has been highlighted on this very site.

I think the narrative from you and others who sound extremely bitter seems to be one of latent jealousy against Mr Sutherns?

The fella lived the dream and the undercurrent from these comments seem to highlight that jealously. So ergo they are quick for the attack. it is very sad to see.
Considering that you are now on the website that he created for fun and subsequently made a living from. Your attitude seems to be a very bitter, nasty one, Which adds nothing positive to the world.

If everyone had your attitude the sale of ulcer prevention medication would sky rocket. But I suppose some people always need a target and someway to 'vent'. I suppose it is good that you can release such bitterness in the virtual world, which means you might cause less harm off it?

Plus it was a tongue in cheek original post, on purpose hoping some might find it amusing as well as informative.
But I did not factor in the fact that some have high levels of jealously and bitterness and feel the need to attack. Plus irony of irony's use Mr Suthern's own creation to attack Mr Sutherns - and somehow treat me as his proxy.
The internet is a really odd place these days.
I would have suspected that the poster in question with the overreaction was a teenager/young. But unless they joined this site when they were 5 they can't be. So the overreaction becomes more questionable when you realise the poster in question is likely in their 30's.

Mark is an FPL legend. You can’t write off his previous achievements based on a poor start to this season. He is ranked 6205 in the Second Chance league which is remarkable, clearly showing he hasn’t ‘forgotten how to play FPL’. Besides he has been committed to our cause and helped elevate the game over many years and the content he has created either via Scoutcast or Black Box is fantastic.

The HOF that was created and manipulated by Mark and scout themselves The HOF is a sham and the worst thing to happen to FPL imo. For a start you have to be in their league. He's nowhere in that non scout one

Of course I'm not saying he's bad or anything. That would be ridiculous. People getting butt hurt thinking I said that and in panic . Yes he was a great player. Yet 3 of his last 4 ranks ( Inc this one) have been bad. My whole point is that he's certainly no GOAT and he's currently not a great player. I don't think he will ever be a top player again because he tries too hard to be different. It's too high risk against so many players now. He's not learning any lessons just doing the same thing over and over . Also doesn't he not captain players who play Forest? That is what noobs and casuals do.

I’m well aware that the original HOF was ‘tweaked’ but as far as I know (no longer a member), he is nowhere near the top now, hence my comment about the HOF not lying, to put down the theory that he is the GOAT.

Yeah fair play. I mean people who actually win the game have achieved more than anyone with 10 top 10k ranks so it's unfair on the actual champions to put people who haven't come close to what they have achieved . This HOF is such a joke , it is the reason all this 'elite player' rubbish started.

Our HOF is somewhat biased towards recent seasons' results, so is not really a fair comparison between current and past greats. Some former greats such as Ville Ronka used to dominate FPL just as much as current greats such as Fabio Borges have done more recently. It is a combination of Consistent excellence and recent form - some have even suggested that it ought really renamed as a Hall of Form.

There are other HOFs that emphasize different measures of success, and there are probably others who have had better career records, but Mark has certainly had an excellent FPL record, and when you also take his other contributions to FPL such as FFS into account, then he is certainly at least an FPL Legend.
