Vote for the best FPL goalkeeper of 2022/23

The Fantasy Football Scout 2022/23 end-of-season awards are up and running, with the poll for best goalkeeper open for voting in this article and on the sidebar.

We’ll be assessing the key candidates in each position in four separate articles, starting with this piece on the men between the sticks.

Overall score, points per match and value in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) were all factors we considered when compiling this shortlist – the rest we’ll leave up to you.

2022/23 CANDIDATES

NICK POPE

The FPL Watchlist: Who are the best medium-term player picks? 10
  • Points: 157
  • Points per match: 4.24
  • Start cost: £5.0m
  • End cost: £5.4m

If it wasn’t for his latest 17 matches, this could’ve been quite a straightforward vote. By the end of Gameweek 21, Newcastle United’s Nick Pope had bagged his sixth consecutive clean sheet for over 2.6 million managers. Only two goals had been conceded in 11 games, with no team close to the Magpies’ total of 12 clean sheets.

However, their subsequent push for Champions League football has seen more goals at both ends of the pitch. Two shut-outs have arrived in these 17 matches, as FPL managers slowly turned away from a defensive double-up with Kieran Trippier (£6.0m).

Despite being sent off against Liverpool in Gameweek 24, Pope played all league games except the final day and is one of three goalkeepers to save multiple penalties. What has generally hindered his FPL season is playing behind a defence that has only allowed 127 shots on target, the second-fewest, meaning a low 87 saves have been made.

DAVID RAYA

FPL notes: Steele + Raya's returns, De Zerbi on "tired" players 2
  • Points: 166
  • Points per match: 4.37
  • Start cost: £4.5m
  • End cost: £4.8m

Whereas David Raya is a sweet mix of solid clean sheets (12) and making lots of saves from poorer, non-threatening shots. Throughout the campaign, Brentford have conceded the second-most shots on target (197) whilst allowing the fourth-fewest big chances (67) – no team has a bigger difference between these numbers.

His 154 stops, 39 save points and 20 bonuses all rank first, alongside a save percentage of 78.2% which is best among regular starters. There was even time for an own goal.

It’ll be an interesting few months for Raya, whose 2024 contract expiry may lead to a summer sale. If he gets a 2023/24 FPL price before leaving for one of the ‘top’ teams, the Spaniard could remain a bargain.

DAVID DE GEA

Vote for the best FPL goalkeeper of 2022/23 1
  • Points: 161
  • Points per match: 4.24
  • Start cost: £5.0m
  • End cost: £5.1m

Sticking with Spain, it feels like David De Gea‘s FPL success is more about the team rather than the individual. Clean sheets have escalated since the Gameweek 17 restart, with 12 from 24 outings guaranteeing that Manchester United will end this season with the league’s most.

However, his bonus points (5) and save percentage (71.1%) totals are the lowest of these contenders, whilst he’s also the only one with a negative number for expected goals (xG) prevented (-0.70). This is because Man United have conceded 43 goals but their xG from shots conceded on target was less.

Nevertheless, he is the third-highest-scoring goalkeeper and being a strong alternative to defender Luke Shaw (£5.3m) means his season ended with peak ownership.

ALISSON

Vote for the best FPL goalkeeper of 2022/23 2
  • Points: 162
  • Points per match: 4.38
  • Start cost: £5.5m
  • End cost: £5.5m

What’s snuck under the radar in FPL is that Alisson actually sits number two amongst stoppers. Managers tended to ditch Liverpool’s defensive assets after a start of two clean sheets from eight matches was soon followed by none between Gameweeks 13 and 20, by which point where they were third-worst for conceding big chances.

They’ve remained in that position until the end, yet are ranked joint-second for clean sheets (14). Meanwhile, Alisson’s +8.50 xG prevented is way ahead of third place and he’s one of four goalkeepers to have an assist, setting up Mohamed Salah‘s (£13.1m) October winner against Manchester City

Finishing in 4.06% of the top 100k squads, the 30-year-old had barely been touched because of Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s (£7.8m) existence but he has six more points. It’s been an underrated FPL year for the Brazilian.

KEPA ARRIZABALAGA

FPL review: Kepa hauls again but James misses out on clean sheet 2
  • Points: 118
  • Points per match: 4.07
  • Start cost: £4.5m
  • End cost: £4.5m

Without an appearance until Gameweek 9, late starter Kepa Arrizabalaga is down in 12th for total points but has a match average that sits alongside the best. He was particularly popular ahead of the post-World Cup restart, where unlimited free transfers allowed an extra 400,000 managers to jump onto the Chelsea keeper and they soon received four clean sheets from seven matches.

People thought they were getting a ‘top six’ keeper for a bargain price but, unfortunately for them, no more than two have arrived since Gameweek 22, as mediocre Chelsea continued to disappoint in the bottom half.

Even so, his save percentage of 75.8% is only slightly behind Raya.

NOT QUITE MAKING THE CUT

Vote for the best FPL goalkeeper of 2022/23

A few other goalkeepers definitely need mentioning. The only others to join Pope on four double-digit hauls are Jose Sa (£5.0m) and Bernd Leno (£4.6m).

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ stopper has a clean sheet from four of the last five Molineux games and only Man United kept more at home. He also has the second-highest number of bonus points (18) behind Raya.

Leno is third with 17 but ranks second for save points (37). Fulham’s back line peaked during a Gameweek 17 to 24 run, letting in four goals during nine matches, allowing the German to end the season with the league’s best xG prevented score of +9.70.

Elsewhere, Dean Henderson‘s (£4.6m) 82 points were the next-best after Pope by the time of his season-ending injury. He’d saved two penalties, whilst the cheap Jason Steele (£4.0m) has made a late push since starting in Gameweek 26. Six clean sheets from 15 appearances, averaging 4.33 points.

Which players have potential to be budget gems next season?

    Here is my list

    Enciso (5.5)
    Evan Ferguson (5.5)
    Jacob Ramsey (6.0)
    Gibbs-white (6.0)
    Mbeumo (6.5)
    Eze (6.5)
    Garnacho (5.0)

(Next year predicted price in brackets)

Ferguson could be compromised if Undav (5.5) hits the ground running, which I suspect he may do.
Awoniyi could be a bit of a Mitrovic at 6.0
      Everton defenders like Tarkowski (5.0)
      Andreas and Billing (5.5)
      Will Broja be back (5.5)?

Awoniyi had a great finish to season. I think he could be a hit as well.

Forest will be a fun team to watch..See goals in a front 3 of Brennan Awoniyi MGW

I'll definitely have mbuemo. Without Toney in the team, he's the main man. Just hope he's no more than £7m

Yeah just noticed he had 9 goals and 9 assists this season. Was unlucky last season hitting the post several times. His finishing has improved a lot recently

With him being the man man i can see his goal tally reaching 15 goals next season

Enciso is about as much of a definite as I can have currently. Paqueta is another I'm highly interested in in his position behind the forward now, needs to improve his finishing a bit but he's taking so many shots and creating a fair bit too. Awoniyi firmly on the radar too if it looks like he'll hold that spot over Johnson

Hear me out on this one without too much ridicule please.

Depending on price Darwin Nunez could be great. His second full season at Benfica (I think it was them) was great. His English language will have improved, Firmino gone and will fully understand Klopps expectations.

I would also expect a fairly significant price drop next season to possibly 7.5m and I doubt we'll be able to afford all the big hitters.

Can't argue with that list, could be a few gems in there. Be interesting to see what Chelsea and Spurs are like next season and the price of some of their players....could get some bargains there if they can get their act together

Gave my thoughts here, which I have also copied below:

Garnacho: Everyone knows about him, but he is playing better than Sancho, Martial, and Antony IMO. Whether EtH has the guts to play him ahead of those other players remains to be seen.

J.Ramsey: Has the potential to have a very good season under Emery as it is clear Emery rates him and has given him clarity in his team role. Just hoping Villa don't get European football as that will be too far a stretch for their squad.

Mudryk: Will have to see who is the new Chelsea manager, but I have liked what I have seen from Mudryk. Surprised he hasn't got more game time as he looks better than Havertz and Sterling to my eye.

Bentancur: He is Spurs' creative hub and I don't think it is a surprise that Spurs struggled since he got injured. If (and it is a big if), Spurs switch to a 3-5-2 or a 4-2-3-1 and play him in an advanced midfield role (even if Kane is not there) then can see him getting a lot of points.

Wissa: His form when he plays more than 60 minutes (i.e., actually gets to start a game) is pretty good. But he doesn't get many starts. With Toney out, I am hoping he will be the guy to replace him.

Brighton have signed a new striker in Pedro, so be wary with Ferguson and Enciso.

The Brentford striker void is one I'm interested in. A lot of Toney's goals came from one-touch finishes at the end of team moves. His movement was elite, but it does make me think someone can slot in and do fairly well.

I just hope Towers don't repeat the Rashford/Martinelli mistake again. If that standard of player is priced around 6.5m again, I'm going to visit FPL Towers and spray them all with a water bottle. These types of players need to be 8.0m at least, so that we actually have tough decisions to make.

The pricing has been my biggest issue. I don't expect a change but I want to be forced to choose between the best players and not be able to have pretty much everyone I want (excepting the actual spots available), I want to have to look out for and pick players from sides that will likely be at the lower reaches of the table just to fit in better players. It's been too easy this year

Yep. Won my mini league but the season was a slog from start to finish.

Prices were horrendous with barely any differentiation between most players meaning that certain players were just not viable choices because they were the same price as players from better teams.

This, coupled with the unprecedented rise in “influencers”, led to the most fixed template I’ve seen in all my years playing the game and most attempts to play your own game became a lot less viable. Differentials immediately broadcast to the world and players so highly owned that you’re punished beyond belief if you don’t own them.

I don’t see it getting any better next season either. I think we’ve already seen FPL’s best years unfortunately.

Pricing was pathetic, I ended up with Salah Bruno Kane and Haaland with triple Brighton and double Newcastle and a full playing bench, only player I couldn't get was TAA. The spoonfeeding has ruined the game though.

I don't see Kane agreeing to go to Newcastle. He'd only move to a club with a chance to compete with City, and there are only two of those. Maddison would though.

That's 9/10 top 200k finishes for me. Think after 15 years I've finally learnt that at the start of the season it is necessary to go template. I always seem to be chasing, which suits my game but it'd be nice to not be so far behind at Xmas.
I think bb gw 1 and fh gw 38 are viable tactics too.
Also something what worked for me particularly good this year is not to focus too much on double gw players. It's the teams that go deep in fa cup that end up with extra fixtures and there's often rotation so if you don't get that player who plays 180 mins it often isn't worth it. (There are exceptions tho admittedly). My rival often got as many doublers as possible and I often outscored him with good single gw picks. This strategy often used less hits too.

29k in the end after being 14k in GW 33, 4 reds out of 5!

      109k last season
      22k year before
      120k
      14k
      9k
      37k
      47k
Won't mention the seasons beyond 14/15

        14 seasons :-
        Top 1k - 1
        Top 10k - 5
        Top 50k - 6
        Top160k - 2

        Average season position as a % - Top 0.59%

This season was a real slog.

Finished 12k in the end but was 300th in GW11. Would've been nice to have been top 10k as that would've been my 6th top 10k finish. I agree with you on DGW players - few years ago there was less rotation but now its hard to get DGWers who will play both. The likes of Bruno and Kane are exception to this but there's not too many mid/forwards like them

251k. Highest rank all season was 146k so it is what it is.

    Three key points cost me dearly;

GW1 going Salah and Kane(c), over Salah(c) and Haaland. 21 points down. 6m rank to start with. Then the immediate price change meant for the first time ever I played the wildcard in GW2 to get Haaland. Ironically it was the lack of Kane that sent me tumbling down in GW38!

Choosing Isak over Wilson in the run. The first week it was a 22 point swing.

    Not doing Haaland>Kane this week.

On the plus side, didn't sell KdB for Salah the week when he decides to score four in a game this season ha 🙂

A lot of 50/50 decision in there. I sold Salah on WC in 26 which was painful but Wilson over Isak captain in 36 worked out amazing but it really was a 50/50 call that one

Yeah you can't get it all right. Really should have gone Haaland>Kane this week though but fully expected a Haaland second half appearance. It felt like Shaw, Mitoma or Isak were more pressing issues. Probably made worse by the fact my entire defence scored 3 points between them and double City attackers both blanked!

I think it was FPL Focal who hinted at some changes next season, but I don't recall if it was specifically to deadlines.

It needs to change though, it's highly unfair on those who don't have the time or live in different timezones.

  15. Philosopher's Stones

Deadline 6 hours before KO could be the play imo. Gives enough time to soak in the pressers and also eliminates the leaks.

  16. Dunster

First they need to decide on the fundamental approach they want to take. Either accept that the whole game gets the benefit of the first game teamsheets (so obviously kick-off), accepting that this puts pressure on players either because they are different time zones or have family/work to juggle, OR try to take that out of the equation by having a deadline well ahead of kick-off.

If it’s the latter then clearly the current gap isn’t working and you need to either move it back yet further (say midnight) or just accept you can’t achieve it, in which case might as well do kick off anyway

I had my best ever season, but looking at my GW history my worst week was 21 when I got greedy and captained Mahrez (6 points) instead of Haaland (17 points). I also benched that horrible troll Perisic who got 6, while starting Shaw & White who both got zero. That gave me a GW rank of 7.2 million.

I was at my worst in GW33 when I had GW rank of 11.1m. I refused to buy Haaland for a hit against Arsenal and we all know what happened next. I also didn't own Kane and Rashford who hauled on that day. 10 out of 11 players blanked and I've never seen anything like this before.

Tougher year in year out. Not watching enough football and missing deadlines few times but most importantly got so many 50/50 wrong. Missing Almiron, Watkins & Wilson runs got me into troubles :P. Ending at 175k but have won both my MLs thanks to Kane [C] final game.

Last 8 seasons: 2 top 10K, 1 top 50K, 3 top 100K and 2 top 300K (the last two seasons). I am not great on this game but it's ok for bantering here and there, the only way is up? 😆

Was Grealish a top FPL performer? Feel like that was a big myth this season.

Even when he played his actual points returns weren't that impressive. Only 4.3pts per game. Underlying data was mediocre too.

Seems that Grealish and Bernardo hold the width for City, with Gundog, Haaland, and KDB the 3 getting in the box.

Scout Picks with a strong finish. 75 points with Kane captain (included Lindelof autosub). Finish at 45k OR. Not that great given its a FH every GW. If I give them 25 on BB and 25 on TC they would finish 8,923 OR.

Think the knowledge this info provides me is that jumping on the hottest «bandwagons» every GW could hurt your OR. Patience is gold..even in FPL.
