FPL

FPL 2022/23 winner: Who was the overall champion?

Ali Jahangirov has been crowned the 2022/23 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) champion after a dramatic Gameweek 38.

OVERALL LEAGUE

FPL has yet to update after this afternoon’s matches but using LiveFPL’s live league standings tool, we know that Ali has finished five points clear of second-place AZZURRI 🇮🇹.

In one of the tightest finishes of recent years, two other managers – Joanne Hales-Owen and Craig Marshall – were only a point further back.

The runner-up came within a Callum Wilson (£7.3m) no-show of victory; had the Newcastle United striker stayed on the bench at Stamford Bridge, AZZURRI 🇮🇹 would have had Ethan Pinnock (£4.4m) coming on as an auto-sub with his 15-point haul.

Both second and third place captained Harry Kane (£11.5m) for his Gameweek-high tally of 16 points, with Ali inching over the line despite a relatively meagre five points from his own skipper, Mohamed Salah (£13.1m).

FANTASY FOOTBALL SCOUT LEAGUE

FPL 2022/23 winner: Who was the overall champion? 1

Ng Wesley finished 15th in the world and took home our Fantasy Football Scout league crown.

Going into Gameweek 35 with an overall rank of eight, Wesley backed Eberechi Eze (£5.7m) with the captaincy in a final-day ‘Hail Mary’ punt for top spot.

Despite the Crystal Palace midfielder’s blank, Wesley saw off Chris Glover with nine points to spare. Had Chris captained Kane, of course, there’d have been a different outcome.

FANTASY FOOTBALL SCOUT MEMBERS LEAGUE

Finishing third in our open-to-all league was Sebastien Goueriot, who also secured first place in our Fantasy Football Scout Members league.

Despite a sub-par Gameweek 38 in which his overall rank dropped from 18th to 33rd, Sebastien still finished with a comfortable 20-point winning margin over Chris Webster.

Live Hall of Fame number 15 (at the last update) Jan Kepski secured a third top 1k finish in four years and finished third in the above league.

Congratulations to all the winners and the FPL managers who pushed them close; stay tuned for RedLightning’s next excellent round-up for a more detailed summary of these and other community leagues and cups.

Finished on same points 2401 as my rival in work mini-league. He is given 1st place as he scored 42 to my 37, so outscored me by 5 points this week. Is that a tie-breaker? top score on last week? Or would any of you lads call it a draw?

Pretty sure the tiebreak is fewest transfers over the season.

Rule should be similar to the official game. i.e. who has the better OR on the official site. (once it fully updates)

    Cracked the top 20k

Missed all the leaks but made the Haaland to Kane (c) move 32 hrs before the deadline.

    Because of my brilliant instincts.

And also because I've switched off from FPL in favour of other fantasy sports and thought all the games were 3pm Saturday not 3pm Sunday, thus making my FT a day early by accident.

Here's the thing, unless they're running solvers (which some are) the experts aren't any more expert than those who engage with their content and are able to apply some critical thinking.

        Keys for me are:
        - all the stats you need are available free
        - watch games if you like to and can, but if you don't watch games (I last watched a full 90 mins of FPL in about 2010 I think), you can read/watch a few things to get some game context (e.g. player X is now playing more advanced, player Y is more secure role due to whatever)
        - mostly try and make transfers as late as possible - information more important than team value
        - generally look 4-6 weeks ahead, rather than 1, but be flexible with plans
        - don't think you're smarter than the room once the season settles down and there is current information
        - get lucky so 90% of your 50/50ish decisions are right

Last point most important, the scoring is so simple that variance from coin flip decisions can be massive.

It's a simple game made complicated by people IMO

Like this. Also, watch carefully for the form breakout players. e.g. Kepa & Watkins this season. I missed both.

Good list this, specifically because you added the last entry.

All of the tops things are the 'sensible' ways to play but that last line dictates a whole lot of rank places at the end of the day

Experts are simply defined by people who spend lots of time going over the same stuff … and actually posting about it. You can’t be an expert at a game largely decided by luck. I’ll forever be 125k-250k on any given year because I don’t spend my life on it, and I’m in a time zone that nulls any team leaks. Which is why team lock should be an hour after pressers or 24 hrs prior.

Smooth captain Kane, rough Ederson losing clean sheet and three bonus in the 84th minute. Biggest smooth though was a respectable final rank of 24k in a really tough season.

      68 PTS. 107k > 67k rank.

Smooth: Kane(c), De Gea pen save, Bruno.

Rough: A few blanks but nothing major, usually GW38 is a lot worse.

      Season stats:

      Final rank: 67k
Final score: 2544 (A personal best)

      Season High OR: 15k (GW14)
      Season Low OR: 436k (GW29)

      Best GW score: 146 (GW34)
      Worst GW score: 40 (GW35)

      Best GW rank: 1 (GW7)
      Worst GW rank: 7.3m (GW25)

Season of 2 halves, was going well before the World Cup, and went poorly after the World Cup. FH and BB chips went well, TC chip not so good. Ended up with a very similar rank and score to last season.

      Rough:

Zero minutes from Man City triple of Haaland, Gündogan & Stones, plus Estupiñán didn't start. Trippier own goal.

      Smooth:

      65 (no hits)
26% green arrow thanks to Kane(c), Watkin's goal, DdG's penalty save, Salah's assist and Botman subbing for Haaland.

Mediocre season but finishing on green somehow makes up for the nine consecutive red arrows from GW28 onward.

58 this week. 32 from the captain, a couple of 1 point cameos. Can't complain - think it's my 2nd best season ever.

Choosing Isak instead of Wilson the difference between just inside the top 20k, and easily making the top 10k.

Season wise, the GW13 wildcard, where I went 2 Arsenal defence rather than the template 2 attack, worked brilliantly. Not having a reset for the World Cup would've helped me a lot, feel in hindsight it was unnecessary as the extended break didn't shake that much up.

Smooth Kane propelling me 40k places to Top 100k finish, Rough Estupian sub-in blocking Pinnock.

High of season was getting Almiron just before he went mental for 7/8 gameweeks.

Rough; Accidentally triggered a -8 hit whilst not concentrating (and rushing to get to the stadium). Had to do a -8 to revert which meant I went into the GW on a -20 and dropped to fourth.

Smooth; Outscored everyone and jumped back into second with 71.

Smooth: I finished the season into the first 10K (7912) for first time. I played the Andorra Cup final and I wasn't out of the Aston Villa Cup until gw35.

Rough: Bad decisions in the last gw (Eze captain? What was I thinking?) cost me the Andorra Cup final. And cost me not finish into the first 5K,as I was just 2 gws ago. Well, not that rough, I'm more than happy with my season.

Season was going great till GW36.

      - Benched Estupiñán
      - Got Isak (C) instead of Wilson.

Wilson move alone wrecked the end of my season. 41 point swing. Was chasing this week and woikd have gone Kane (knowing rival would). Literally so many points lost!

Biggest low of the season - missed haaland price rise on DAY ONE of the season so couldn't do a direct transfer of kane > haaland. Had to wait another 4 weeks, by which the damage was done.

Until the final 2 weeks, my high was waiting to gw27 to wildcard and picking up Jason steele, which vastly helped my team both with his low cost and his own points.

But in the penultimate gameweek came my favourite transfer. I had 2 FTs, one of which was martinelli > Bruno (which was a success as I captained him) the other was a cheap striker just to enable this transfer. They were only going to sit on my bench. I went with awoniyi in case I needed him in the final gameweek, as I suspected forest would need to attack on the last game.

Turns out I did need him, and he helped me overcome a 21 point deficit to secure mymini league title onthe final day. Best bit of business all season.

Enjoy the summer, everyone. That's enough for now, hey?

      Smooth Kane captain
Rough Transferred in Tarko as an enabler & benched him last minute for Pervis attacking returns.
Lost mini league by one point.

Smooth was my 1FT, bringing in (K)ane. 50% of my points right there.
Rough was no-shows for Shaw and Stones compounded by 1-point cameos by Estupinan, Mitoma and Wilson.

For me, it was a largely 'meh' season, spoilt by interruptions such as the World Cup that caused too much templateness which led me to lose interest by midseason. I'm looking forward to normal service being resumed next season.

Smooth: Transferred in Kane and made him captain
Brought Kiwior in last week as enabler for Fernandes, both scored well for me this week.
Stones zero minutes gave me Pinnock's 15 points off the bench.
89 points all out and rank halved from 300k to 147k. Great to end with two consecutive green arrows.

Rough: Weeks 4 to 36! Not giving Haaland the armband for some of his hauls. Missing the Almirion bandwagon. Not doubling soon enough on the Arsenal midfield. Some high bench totals 25, 27, 25. Isak over Wilson on the second wildcard. No Estupinian for those double gameweeks. Wasting my free hit when a - 4 would have been enough. Just 30 points in gw35. Onwards and upwards next season!

    14. Mr. O'Connell
      • 12 Years

Smooth: ending on a green arrow. 30k alright in the end, but getting too many rotated players on WC in 33 ruined any chance of a good season.

      Rough: not captaining Kane.

Not going with my gut to get Jacob Ramsey for a hit instead of playing Solanke.

Ederson (on for a 10 pointer) concedes to Pinnock (15 points). Rival takes mini league by a point thanks to Pinnock (3rd sub) coming in.

Lose rest of mini leagues by less than 10 points - any one of those things above going my way would have meant I won at least one, if not all of them.

Smooth: brought in Kane for Haaland, already had Jesus & White. Won my ML cup final and finished 4th in my ML.

Ended up at 77k OR. Happy with finish as was 1.9million going into the world cup. Only blip was in GW36 when I went Jesus over Wilson and scuppered chances of top 50k.

Overall happy considering I nearly quit last Autumn after missing Haaland hauls due to having KDB.

Thanks to everyone who has helped my this season on here. Apologies to anyone who I've given bad advice to, especially my misreading of Howe on Isak/Wilson in GW36.

      59 pts, OR - 4629

Gw38 Rough - Trips own goal, 2 points each across all 5 mids except Salah

      Gw38 Smooth - Kane(c), DDG penalty save

Season Rough - Not catching any of Almiron's points during that incredible run before the World Cup, Wildcarding in gw26 taking all my Liverpool assets out before their 7-0 win against Utd and giving me my lowest points total for the season.

Season Smooth - cracked the top 5k for the first time, won all my cash mini leagues, got my captain choice correct more often than not this season

      I like GW38 - 2 hours and bosh, it's all over.

Got in Kane for Haaland, but didn't captain. Late CS blown for Walker by Pinnock (who was winking at me from 2nd on the bench) was a bit annoying, but overall an OK whilst not spectacular 55, but it was enough to sneak me inside the top 500 and finish at my season's best rank of 461. I'll take that!

      Rough;

Grim end for me. GW34 wildcard got me up to 163k, then three reds and one green saw me drop to 264k, back up to 207k, then finish at 251k.

This week about topped it off. Trippier OG, Shaw injured had Bueno sub in during a 5-0 as Dunk didn't feature, Alvarez and Mahrez blanks, Haaland no show. Had McNeil in my head all week and ended up bringing him in for Mitoma through fear if nothing else. Really wanted DCL in for Isak originally. 34 points all out. 7.5m GW rank!

Smooth; Won my mini-league at least. Bruno and Salah(c) only returns really.

Finished the season with another mediocre week so ended around 12k. Didn't enjoy this season at all despite spending it all in top 50k....in Gw11 I was actually 300th and dreaming of winning the whole thing.

Highs - bringing in Foden Maddison and Bowen on WC in GW8 which led to massive score in GW9 - had Haaland captain as well. Wilson captain in 36 was sweet as well.
Lows - Not getting Arsenal picks right post world cup hurt. WC in 26 and taking out Salah and co was painful as well.

Biggest low was my lack of enjoyment and where FPL is going - teams leaks in build up to games, lots following twitter template etc. Doesn't feel as much fun but that says more about me and maybe I need to change the way I play the game

Hi Christina, sorry to hear that but totally understand where you're coming from....the games changed now and I was seriously thinking if it was worth the hassle next season as well.

Hopefully see you on here next season if you change your mind. Maybe just ignore rank and have some fun next season - that will be my approach. I've made a start by unfollowing everyone FPL on twitter and will try and play my own game without all the noise. FPL deadline needs to be moved as well which would help.

Enjoy the break and hopefully see you on here at some point

Will do - the weird thing is that it's not my OR that made me make the call. I had more fun than most seasons...played BB week 1 and WC1 in week 2 for example. Took a -12 in week 38 and enjoyed it.

With lack of electricity in our country at the moment it has become nearly impossible to watch games and I've stopped watching pods etc long go. Also couldn't see the need to pay subs any longer as I just never got around to using any of the features.

I dont want to play if my heart is not in it and just plod along. Not for me.
            cheers pal

Biggest low easily - going Treble Chelsea defence on FH gw28 and captaining Chilwell v Everton which I assumed was a lock clean sheet.
Chilwell was on for three bonus as well until Everton scored at around the 60 minute mark - for good measure Everton scored a second - Chilwell 1*2 .- Kouilbaly 0 and James 3.
It even tops gw13 where I did not captain Haaland gw13 and finished 10 million plus rank where everything else was a disaster.

Biggest high was ironically a really poor wildcard gw3 which was below the average score - but it was done to set up for bench boost gw4 - the bench boost netted me 25 points - 100 in total despite captaining Jesus for 2*2 - and it was not even a double gameweek.

Season rough: final rank of about 550k. GW1 rank was about 7.5m and it was just a never-ending slog from there. Tried to adopt a no hits approach to transfers which is rare for me and it just didn't feel like fun. Micro decisions (transfers) and macro decisions (wildcards and chips) just poor across the board.

Season high: humbling rank, closer to non-obsessed friends and family so MLs felt more engaging. Took more hits in gw38 than first 37 weeks combined. Paid off big and ultimately felt fun to go back to the hit heavy approach that I enjoy and have had success with in the past. And feeling positive and excited to dive straight back in for 23/24, with yet a few more lessons learned.

GW38 went swimmingly. Took a -16, removing Haaland, Isak, Willock, MacAllister, and Zinchenko (who scored a total score 4 pts), replacing with Kane (c), Jesus, Eze, McNeil, and Porro (total score 62 pts). Scored 92 (76 net), GW rank 4k.

Unfortunately that was as good as it got. Watching the Charity Shield and concluding Haaland would take time to settle. Went with Kane early doors, never fully recovered from mid-season rank of 4m +. Ended up at 340k, second worst ever rank.

Highs: Captaining Wilson in the last DG 36, his 48 points caught and put me 20 up on my rival in ML
Then winning ML by 9 points.

If you’ve been registered on Fantasy Football Scout for 13 years you’re not casual

For a really casual, considering how many players are in the game, I'd say that into the first 500K is very good, into the first 1M is good, into the first 1.5M is decent.

I think 1 is achievable if you choose the right 15 and the the right C & VC. I'm sure I saw someone post a team from last season that would have been the overall winner if the manager hadn't looked at it once after entering it.

          This was my GW1 squad
          Ederson 5.5 Ward 4.0
          TAA 7.5 Robbo 7.0 Dias 6.0 James 6.0 Cash 5.0
          Salah 13.0 Martinelli 6.0 Aaronson 5.5 Bailey 5.0 Andreas 4.5
          Haaland 11.5 Jesus 8.0 Archer 4.5

If I'd left it alone other than transfers for defenders out for long stretches, I'd have got a far higher score.

I consider my self a bit more than causual, maybe a hour of research every week
      8 years of play,
My first year 244,000. I didnt know how to use the chips correctly, and picked players who I knew were good in real life, rather than good in FPL. Didnt do a lot of research, I felt that was "casual"
I've improved with more research, and hit a high of 34,000 last year, falling back to 130,000 this year

So I'm gonna go with 500/250/100

This season was really terrible and I made a lot of mistakes. I vowed to take a break next season. Especially since my favorite team Southampton has also been relegated.

However the ending was a bit forgiving. With 2,597 points I got an overall ranking of 14,178.

Maybe I will reconsider my decision.

It's clear you are a newbie at this and it will be great if you quit playing FPL at this time. You do realize that your rank and performance isnt guaranteed? And every year you rank doesnt depend on your overall score ie if you score more points, it doesnt mean you rank higher). Let me give you a few examples from my history
          2011/12: 2251 points. 1277 rank
          2014/15: 2195 points. 10900 rank
          2018/19: 2420 points. 3913 rank

          You see?

I cant believe you have the gall to come on here with that rank and complain about your "terrible" season. I had a 200K ish rank and dont consider myself as having a bad season - i won some mini leagues, lost some but had fun with friends and like minded individuals. IMO thats what matters (but thats just me - everyone else probably plays for the 10k rank)

GW30 I was circa 870k. Finished 301k. More than happy with that although I know it’s miles off some that have posted. 3/4 bad weeks after a poor start but only a couple of those bad weeks were in the last 12 weeks. Will go again next year. Enjoy the break everyone
