Who made your 2022/23 FPL Team of the Season?

We can reveal our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Team of the Season following a week of voting from the Fantasy Football Scout userbase.

Over 16,000 votes were cast in total which, even allowing for the multiple votes permitted per person, was still an excellent response.

Seven players (one goalkeeper, three defenders, two midfielders and one forward; the bare minimum for each position in FPL) made it into the XI from the initial position-by-position polls, with the run-off vote the decider for the other four spots.

TEAM OF THE SEASON – GOALKEEPER VOTE

David Raya (£4.8m) was the comfortable victor in our goalkeepers’ poll, canvassing over half of the vote.

A total of 12 clean sheets was bettered by four other shot-stoppers but, just to prove that shut-outs aren’t everything, he still finished top for FPL points among players in his position.

Saves were key: he made more stops (154) and accumulated more save points (39) than any other player.

Twenty bonus points was also a tally unbeaten by any other goalkeeper.

The Spaniard did it all from a starting price of just £4.5m, too, and despite a modest rise to a season-ending £4.8m, he still finished as the best-value FPL asset in 2022/23 (based on points per million).

TEAM OF THE SEASON – DEFENDER VOTE

Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) only needed two appearance points in Gameweek 38 to hit a double-century for FPL points… and promptly registered a duck-egg at Stamford Bridge.

But he still finished a whopping 42 points ahead of any other FPL defender, despite an end-of-season run in which he blanked in 14 of his final 18 appearances.

Finishing top among his peers for clean sheets (16) and overall returns (26), the creative Trippier also banked almost twice as many bonus points (39) as any other Fantasy defender.

Did the Emirates haul influence the backing of Pervis Estupinan (£5.0m)? Perhaps, as no-one in the defender poll averaged fewer points per match (3.7) this season.

But like Raya above, his output has to be placed in the context of his low, low starting price of £4.5m.

Only three defenders recorded more attacking returns than the left-back’s eight.

Ben White (£5.0m) narrowly pipped Luke Shaw (£5.3m) into third, in what was the closest gap between two candidates in this end-of-year awards poll.

White is the third FPL asset to make our Team of the Season who started the campaign at £4.5m.

Not one for a huge haul (he didn’t once score more than eight points in a match), he steadily chipped away with consistent returns and blanked in fewer of his starts than even Trippier.

TEAM OF THE SEASON – MIDFIELDER VOTE

Only two midfielders automatically made it through to the Team of the Season.

The qualifiers were two high-performing picks who started the campaign at a now-unthinkable £6.5m: Marcus Rashford (£7.2m) and Martin Odegaard (£6.9m).

Both of them easily topped 200 points, a combined 47 attacking returns arriving from the pair.

No-one in the midfielder poll bar the two £12.0m+ options averaged more points per start (Rashford 6.0, Odegaard 5.7).

The pair were also third and second among midfield options for double-digit hauls (eight and nine respectively).

TEAM OF THE SEASON – FORWARD VOTE

Erling Haaland (£12.4m) cruised into our Team of the Season, with nearly every responder in our forwards’ poll nominating the Manchester City striker.

FPL’s leading points scorer of 2022/23, Haaland delivered more attacking returns (45) and points per start (8.1) than any other Fantasy asset regardless of position.

A total of 11 double-digit hauls was also a division high.

TEAM OF THE SEASON – RUN-OFF VOTE

As mentioned earlier, our run-off poll effectively gave managers the chance to decide on our formation by voting for the final four players.

It was fitting that, with this being the highest-scoring 38-game season in Premier League history, we ended up with a 3-5-2 as Shaw and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m) were given the cold shoulder.

Harry Kane (£11.5m) was the clear favourite of many, backed by the vast majority of responders.

Finishing just nine points behind Haaland, Kane actually outscored the Norway international from Gameweek 2 onwards.

A total of 263 points represented his best-ever FPL season, while he also hit 30 league goals for the second time in his career.

In 30 of his 38 outings did Kane return at least one goal/assist.

He’s also the first name from our 2021/22 Team of the Season who returns from last year

Gabriel Martinell (£6.5m) was another Premier League player to make a mockery of their FPL starting price, this time £6.0m.

Two-dozen attacking returns arrived for the Brazilian, as many as Rashford managed and more than Odegaard posted.

A minutes-per-point average of 14.1 was the best of any Arsenal player who started at least one match, that game-time being eaten into in the second half of 2022/23 after the arrival of Leandro Trossard.

Bukayo Saka (£8.0m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) follow Kane in keeping their places from last season.

Saka delivered more attacking returns (26) than any sub-£11.5m option in the game, despite blanks being registered in 10 of his final 13 run-outs.

Salah was actually the top-scoring midfielder for points (239), attacking returns (32) and double-digit hauls (10) but such is the stratospheric levels he’s set himself since his move to Anfield in 2017, he only just scraped into our user-voted Team of the Season.

The Egyptian had only scored on six occasions before the mid-season break for Qatar 2022 but ended up outscoring every other FPL midfielder – and Haaland – for points after the World Cup, blanking in only one of his final 11 starts.

TEAM OF THE SEASON – THE LINE-UP

We’ll follow this article up with a look at the best possible ‘ghost’ team for 2022/23, i.e. the highest-scoring squad you could have feasibly set up in Gameweek 1 and not touched for the rest of the campaign.

Our user-voted team above is not an example of this, of course, with four Arsenal assets included and Estupinan not arriving until Gameweek 3.

„A total of 263 points represented his best-ever FPL season, while he also hit 30 league goals for the first time in his career.”
Kane scored 30 goals in 2017/18 season. Fun fact, it was not enough to be a top scorer, as Salah registered 32 that season

DDG was the best keeper after WC26 i think. Made a big difference of going for him instead of Ederson and Pope who i had earlier and avoiding Shaw. Raya was the best keeper though. I wonder where he will end up?

I don't get a lot out of these awards articles. Much rather be learning about the promoted teams or reviewing a full season's worth stats from last season to help us plan ahead. Could they not be streamlined into 2 big articles: one for the votes and one for the results?

        Now that's an idea!

You'd think the site would conduct a members poll/survey (like Az used to do) ranking the pro pundits in order to see which ones people like best and want to hear more from.

Then why not do some big numbers articles for the whole of the season just gone? We now have a full season's worth of stats which are incredibly useful when it comes to our gameweek 1 teams. And yet it is usually left to me to review the stats position by position even though I'm unpaid. 7. Eze Really?
    • 10 Years
    1 year, 4 months ago

I think many of us have not experienced the same pleasure this season with the FPL game. I emphasize the word game because I watch it deteriorate when it comes to simple self thinking. Although I enjoy the idea of more engaged managers participating, I start t realize improvements do not emanate from self thought; more through the guidance of others.
The above can be said of most things in life where communication has become eminently more available to all.
So where is my little rant above heading to? I have become more transfixed with the game, even though my enjoyment has deteriorated. I must also not forget the reason the game exists. It is not for us, but the creators who have developed the tool for advertising the product. This, in the end, comes down to money. Their intentions are to grow audience participation and the frequency all visit the site.
Not so long ago, with trial and error, new "innovations" were added. The "all out attack" chip (a failed idea) comes to mind, but was at least an attempt to keep more participants engaged throughout the season. The latest, and most blatant, being the "second chance league". Adding the annoying pop up of FF Fix is frustrating and unnecessary, albeit pleasurable for some adds to the lack of effort required to make the right choices.
Each season, on this site too, we remiss the issues of the past and add our 5 penn'th to the mix and hope FPL Towers will listen if a viable proposition.
Ragabolly developed a site that enables many to be more informed and engaged. I use it myself and am not knocking it in any way, but I can't help but think Live participation has had some negative affects.
My view that EO has had the most severe and detrimental impact on the game. Copycats are bad enough but FOMO created by this very easy to obtain information has created the dreaded template more than anything else. "XG" I did not know of a few years ago has become the driver in decision making in a very short space of time.
In conclusion, we cannot turn the clock back, but we can request more innovative methods for the game's construction and restrict information offered by FPL Towers, making it more difficult to apply self damaging aspects of the game.
So I throw out some ideas; many not relating to just my thought process but some more individualistic that I believe will enhance enjoyment and assist in mental health issues which plague this community.
    Ideas:
    1) FPL deletes transfers, in and out, from the FPL site.
    2) All deadlines are 24 hours before the GW starts.
    3) Better effort made by FPL towers to ban all who have more than 2 teams. (A thumb print ID maybe)
    4) There is only one WC.
    5) Carry over of transfers should be extended.
    6) A relook at who is a a defender/Midfielder/Forward.
    7) More transparency with price changes.
    8) A good look at the bonus points system.
    9) A total ban on gambling.

Interesting post. They could just actually ban all players who reveal their teams for their own selfish reasons. This would certainly stop the copying a little. The fact that people are stealing a living out of this game certainly only adds to the issues we have. I'll answer anyway

      1) don't mind this one.
      2) yes deffo. Has to be 24 hours. Sink these few ITK accounts for good
      3) impossible task. I don't really mind how many teams people have unless they are in my cash league but I don't find the playing for rank idea interesting at all so that's probably why I don't care
      4) yeah I love that. Remove the chips too. They are big reason we have a template
      5) nah keep it as is. It's worked for over 16 years
      6) yeah FPL Towers need to take their head out their ar$e
      7) no way. this is even more spoonfeeding. FPL isn't the issue here. It is sites like FPL statistics that is a problem. They should make prices even more randomised to kill these sites off
      8) Jesus yeah. It's goddam awful. Back to man in the stand please and bring Charlie Adam out of retirement
      9) No. If there is no cash leagues I'm done. Cash leagues make this game worth playing. Ban the twitter accounts that plug gambling, sure

Yeah. I think they have a couple of lines regarding cash leagues in the rules but I don't think they would ever act on it. I don't think paying an up front entry fee is really proper gambling anyway . Not as if you are spending money after your initial fee . It would cost them like millions of players if they stopped it which is against what they are trying to do.

The plugging is a problem but again all they can do is ban people who do it from playing but they won't because these people are the ones promoting FPL for them

The game would be more interesting if we could have multiple, potentially successful strategies, but the ridiculously cheap prices funnel us towards the same template. Boring. FPL Towers need to force us to make big calls and encourage a diversity of strategies.

I didn't believe that Benzema would leave this summer, and now that it has happened, I've changed my mind about something I said the other day. This is the golden chance for Kane to sign for Real Madrid and win something significant in the coming years. He can always come back to England and break Shearer's record when he's 33–36 years old. This is also the right moment for Spurs to sell, reinvest wisely, and for a new coach to start building a team around other players.

Yep. They spent the Bale and Modric money wisely I remeber.

Kane or Rice with one year left wont get the money the clubs want.

West Ham fans think they will get £120m for Rice. Yes maybe with three years left but not with one to go. Spurs and WH cannot risk the player leaving for nothing. Same with Celsea for Mount but £75m is more reasonable for all 3, as Kane won't get more than £75m if he isn't allowed to play for a premiership club

They simply cannot afford it un less RealMardrid get competition from elsewhere in signing him

      Porro Hojbjerg Bentancur Bissouma Sessegnon
      Son Richarlison

Not in my view. Just needs games. He is too good to be playing backup to Kane.

But if Spurs try to play a 3-4-3 they will be very weak in midfield, which will reduce their attacking output and lead to more goals being conceded.

I think this will turn out to be a shrewd move.

Why? Scotish League is at Championship's level. I do not think that knowledge of Japanse league will make analogical difference like in Scotish League;)

That's a very simplistic view of it! You seem to overlook the jobs he did first in the National Soccer League in Australia, then as the national coach of Australia and then in Japan. All jobs in which he had to rebuild teams and he went on to win leagues and the Asian Cup for Australia. I know the standard of those leagues is not as good as the PL but it shows his qualities for picking players (not just from the J-league) and building a good dressing room environment. Every time he has stepped up in level he has succeeded. Most managers when they first come to the PL are stepping up in level anyway.

He also has a very progressive football philosophy and the team plays the way he sets them out to and they work hard for each other. Celtic played some great football for the last two years. The best I've seen played in Scotland.

He is very savvy with the media and by all reports has great man management skills and is an inspirational leader.

But as you said he has only won in Scotland due to his knowledge of the J-League!

I just watched a story on Sky News about a free-diver. He had on a giant merman flipper outfit and was diving (flopping perhaps a better word) around a shipwreck, and I could clearly see a large stream of bubbles emerging from his Reuben Loftus Bum-Cheek! I'm still laughing!

My predictions for the summer transfer window:
    - MacA joins Liverpool
    - Rice joins Arsenal
    - Kane stays so ManU move for cheaper striker and waiting for next summer
    - Gundo stays and City get Gvardiol who’s gonna be a starter
    - Chelsea with Nkunku and Poch are a much improved side and they will get at least 2 more expensive signings for starters
    - Spurs are the most disappointing side once again in the transfer window
    - Burnley add some big names and they are targeting a European competition placement

I'm with you until the last one. Burnley will struggle to adapt to the PL although I do think they'll survive.
