FPL 2022/23 team reviews: Bournemouth

Our team-by-team review of the 2022/23 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with Bournemouth.

We’ll analyse the attacking and defensive team stats, while we also reveal which players posed the biggest goal threat and who carried the most assist potential.

Each club will also be previewed nearer to Gameweek 1 as we look more closely at new transfers, pre-season results and fans’ expectations.

It was a brilliant first season back in the Premier League for Bournemouth as they finished 15th, making themselves safe with four games to spare. However, scoring goals proved to be problematic.

Scott Parker was sacked a month into the 2022/23 season, with his replacement Gary O’Neil successfully steering the Cherries away from danger, but attacking issues remained.

In 18 of their 38 Premier League matches, they failed to score, with their 37-goal haul fewer than all top-flight sides bar Wolverhampton Wanderers (31), Everton (34) and Southampton (36).

Not being awarded a single penalty all season didn’t help. For someone like Dominic Solanke, that could be important when weighing up his 2023/24 prospects, which we’ll discuss in further detail later on.

Incoming boss Andoni Iraola can at least take encouragement from the fact Bournemouth did convert opportunities when they arrived, with their 10.3% goal conversion rate placing them mid-table.

Hang on, being a paid-up member is not good enough to read these articles now??? Now you have to go 'premium'! I'm not suckered by the free taster - if the deal is we have to cough up more to get the same, I'm outta here this season 🙁

It should be, Andy, unless there was a problem with the method of payment. I'll pass your case on straight away to the folk who deal with the subs and they can have a look.

Cheers. I renewed last year because it was on the same rate as over the last few years. If the price is higher because I have to start again, I'm out.

Mine also apparently wasn't on auto-renew. I think something with a free trial might have interfered with auto-renewal last year, and when FFS initiated a manual renewal, they didn't activate auto-renewal either, even though that's what I was asking for. (Though I have since decided not to renew). Now the expiry date is wrong and they don't want to do anything about it.

              Andy/De Zerb...

Your current memberships have been fixed and will run to the end of their respective terms. I've been told the confusion was because of expired payment methods on Stripe, which - according to the tech folk - means you've had the last year for free! Let me know if this is not the case.

To keep your memberships beyond the current term (or to confirm a cancellation), can you email support@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk? Very sorry for the faff, it's beyond my comprehension and I'm just passing on the messages.

Bilva could've chosen to play for almost any club in Europe and looks like he's going to Saudi Arabia.

Do you think he'll be "loaned" to Newcastle?

I find it very hard to believe he'll go to Saudi. At best, he may be allowing rumours to negotiate higher wage offers in Europe.

One point that I learned today is that most of the players (esp based at Chelsea) who have accepted or are likely to accept offers in Saudi are Muslim. Obviously that doesn't include Ronaldo, but then he found himself basically unemployable anywhere else.

I was thinking the other day if Ronaldo had joined Arsenal in January they probably would have got over the line and won the league.

We had Nketiah as main striker instead

Ronaldo would have done exactly what he did at Utd. Score some goals but destroy the team dynamic leading to less goals over all and years to get the team back where it was.

It just seems too easy that they're getting rid of all their expensive flops who were on massive wages.

They'd usually be stuck with these kinds of players.

What not in question is that it's desperately unfair that they suffer no consequences for their utterly hopeless transfer policy. What is in question is whether this is all legal and above board. If the Premier League have recently brought in a new policy to examine suspicious transfers, they'd better damn well use it here, as Gary Neville assets.

    1. Deulofail

Looks better, but still not great. I do like that I know what things are (although not on first glance), compared to the previous home page which I never used besides finding the latest article.

The black block of articles should still be labelled as "featured articles" so we know what it is. And latest articles should be headed with "latest articles". There seems to be redundancy in the news-style ticker, since it includes featured articles, which doesn't help the user know where to look for things. Also it's not particularly user-friendly. And it's a weird choice to include 'latest video' in the ticker since it's already of date.

As per the egregious black menu bar on article pages on desktop, it seems the priority is just to have a place to dump the latest links for the latest user funnel strategy. Ironically, I never look and click at things like that because they are more confusing than just putting information in the place you would expect it.

The green text on the black background is awful. The scrolling thing is so out of date. Who does that now? I actually don't mind the black bar on the articles. Sorry Deulofail.

You probably have a screen resolution that still gives enough useable space below it. For me, the green and black bars take up so much space, and the website is already unnecessarily squashed on either side.

I actually don't mind the green-on-black text, but it's because my screen is super bright. It's still a bad choice.

Arteta should have walked when he got Trossard instead of Mudryk then right?

Rice is just one of many targets, and Arsenal are playing the market now like they have done, with some success, for a few windows now. They will have a strategy if they miss out but just paying silly money because ₵ity "might" be interested is not a model of how to run a club/business.

Yeah, paying an extra £10m is fine. But if Hammers become even more greedy and suddenly start dreaming about £120m with add-ons or even more, Edu and Co. will 100% walk away. We've missed out on even better players with greater potential in the past for much smaller transfer fees.

      1. George Sillett
        • 9 Years

I get your point entirely but surely the play would have been to go in at the start with a higher offer as opposed to one that was inevitably going to be turned down. Rice is the kind of player a midfield is built around and the viable alternatives appear to me to be players that will attract bidding wars anyway. In my opinion dithering around for this player is a mistake , just go out and buy him.

        1. Arteta
          • 9 Years
          1 year, 5 months ago

I totally agree with you. They should definitely make both offers with fewer installments and realistic add-ons, and it would be a done deal by now. I think that West Ham would actually accept a whole package of guaranteed £90m plus £10–15m before City got involved, and we could all move on from this saga in June. I'm afraid it will drag on for days or weeks now, and he may not even sign for us at the end. We'll see.

Why isn't squash a popular sport anymore?

There's a squash centre in Bournemouth, near the Hobbycraft head office and the airport.

I'd be more interested in visiting Hobbycraft to tell the truth, assuming they have Airfix models - which you think they would being next to an airport and not too far away from the Bournemouth Aviation Museum.

Lack of TV coverage, decline in the number of courts, COVID.
It has steadily declined in the UK since 2004, but I suspect that it's still more popular than real tennis or jousting!

Did you know that there was a squash court on the Titanic for first class passengers when it sank in 1912?

Apparently, the popularity of squash in the UK has steadily declined since 2004, the year Facebook was launched. F**king Zuckerberg.
