Rashford + TAA v Salah + Botman? Most have gone for the Rashford + TAA option. However, I think Salah + Batman is significantly better if Botman is part of a rotation.

Gakpo darwin jota diaz plenty of options. Each of them can play at striker or left wing. All of then are good value. I would just wait and see the starting eleven.

Today's draft. Shaw a tad overpriced but a good placeholder for Chilwell or Porro. I'm rotating my defenders & getting rid of Estupiñán for GW4. I like Nkunku, Son, etc. but need more info about how each team will setup. Gone with more assured assets playing good fixtures.

    Flekken
    Shaw - Estupiñán - Botman
    Rashford - Fernandes (v) - Saka - Martinelli - Foden
    Jesus - Haaland (C)

    Areola - Pau - Baldock - Mubama

Thanks, I would like to be more bold and put players like Sterling in but their fixtures aren't the greatest either. Going to hope Arsenal start strong! Fernandes with a proper striker in front of him and now that he's captain might make him play better.

I just don't know who to get out of Sterling, Jackson and Nkunku. All great assets! Nkunku looks the best though so I wish you luck. Nkunku over Jesus frees a defender spot for Gabriel nicely too. At 5M, he's a steal, especially with Rice in the team.

10.5 milloin on a starting defender and starting/rotating defender? If Alex Moreno is fit might get him and Andreas Pereira. Team would then be:

    Flekken
    Gabriel Estupinan Moreno
    Salah Rashford Saka Mitoma Pereira
    Haaland Nkunku

    4.0; Botman, Beyer, Archer

Another option? Shaw over Pereira. Moreno to Pau. Or McNeil over Pereira.

Salah's worst season at Liverpool tops Saka's best. Saka fell off towards the end of the 2022/23 season compared to Salah when his team needed him most. FPL price says a lot too.

          1. Arteta
            • 9 Years
            1 year, 4 months ago

How is this a fair comparison? Saka hasn't even hit his prime yet, and Salah had his unforgettable season when he was 25 or 26 years old. I would compare their best seasons and look at the numbers in 2027 or later.

I'm not saying Bukayo will score 32 goals in the league and get 11 assists, but I do expect him to hit 30 G/A in the league in multiple seasons in the future. The only thing that could derail his progress is a very serious injury and a year of rest.

And Mo wasn't the only reason why Liverpool were so successful and hard to beat; it was the Liverpool squad as a whole and Klopp as the mastermind behind the project. They've been incredible and had a world-class spine to the team for years. They could've won so much more if it weren't for the City's megasquad.

If you're making a world XI, why would you put an inferior winger at the time in? Salah's objectively better at the moment.

Saka has potential but this isn't potential FC, otherwise Musiala should be in over KDB.

Did well with a Celtic team dominant in Scottish League so it's hard to judge him on that. Easier to play front foot football when you're well ahead of the competition. Son's form improved towards end of season. Not sure why he was so poor most of the season but that poor form was the exception rather than the rule.

Morning everyone. Can I have your insight please on a key quandary I have for the start of the season?

There is extensive coverage of the importance of getting off to a good start in FPL as a basis of having a successful season. There is a lot of analysis that states it is wrong to ‘book in’ transfers early doors or that we shouldn’t be making many transfers (ie on a weekly basis) due to the value/importance of carrying over transfers. But how can FPL managers make a good start to the campaign while avoiding making transfers on a weekly basis for say the opening 8-10 game weeks? Surely to capitalise on very good fixtures we have to chop and change our original squad? For example I’ve seen a lot of chat about moving Jesus on for Nunez for GW2 etc.Any feedback would be great fully received.

Make plans, but also be prepared to change them if things don't go according to plan.

Cheers Coyote. My concern is going without Liverpool coverage from the start and putting trust in a ‘fixtures’ before form strategy for gw 1.

I read all the received wisdom and stick two fingers up at it. In my current draft, I have 10 transfers booked in up to GW19. It doesn't mean I'll stick to the plan, but at least it's a roadmap.
What I've done is have a Front 7 that is super-charged - all 7 from the Top 3 clubs. Some might get moved on, but they're at 'price points' (7.5, 8.5, 9.0) where there are easy options (only Salah and Trent are out of reach - gotta take risks somewhere). My transfers focus on cheap defenders playing the fixtures.
Now the clever boys will tell you not to "waste transfers" on cheap defenders and keepers; stick in 3 premium defenders, one goalie and never change them. Well, that's not my style.
All I'm saying is there's more than one way to play the game - don't be railroaded into one strategy just because the voices are loud and come with many likes.

        - many thanks Sonaldo. That clarifies a lot actually. I entirely agree with ‘price points’ in squad formation. How do you think your boy is going to do under Ange this year. Tough call between Maddison, Kane and SonnyBoy.

Seems to me like there's 2 distinct schools of thought - one is to set up for a late WC (indeterminate GW) with a balanced team covering key 'price points' for maximum flexibility. What I think I'm going for is an early WC (probably GW5), attacking the first 4 GWs with an aggressive transfer plan. For example, I could set up like this:
      Verbruggen
      Gabriel Estupinan Pinnock
      Salah Rashford Saka Martinelli Mitoma
      Haaland Wissa
      (min bench)
... and play around with the 8m mid spot to attack the fixtures with some differentials: Martinelli - Diaz/Jota (BOU) - Mount (NFO) - Bowen (lut). There's still some flexibility (could skip one of the mids & do Gabriel/Estupinan - Chilwell instead), but the key thing is that I don't have to worry about long-term structure since I'm dead-ending almost immediately.

Largely this is because I place so much value on the info gained in the first 4-5 GW, and after that I rarely feel the need to overhaul my team completely. I must admit I haven't exactly got off to a flying start yet in my 2 previous seasons, but then I didn't really start with so much of a plan. Usually I would vaguely aim the WC for a fixture swing around 8-9 and end up playing it earlier anyway.

I'd say the distinction between early and late wildcard strategies are diminished this time because the strongest teams - City, Arsenal and (up to a point) United have strong starting fixtures. With Chelsea and Spurs being 'wait-and-sees' with new managers, that really only leaves Newcastle and Liverpool as teams that might affect a plan to wildcard on a specific GW.

I mean, with the GW1 squad you show, I think you'd want to keep at least 5 on your wildcard. The rest can be managed with regular transfers.

I have quite a few ideas for WC5 already:
            - Target Villa & Newcastle fixture swings.
            - Overhaul the defence completely (Trippier, Moreno + 1)
            - Get Isak/Wilson depending on who's starting centrally.
            - Get a better bench to cover upcoming rotation around European games, maybe making use of emerging budget options identified in first 4 GW.
            - See who's starting for Liverpool, maybe try squeeze in another attacker alongside Salah
            - Hop off BHA
            - Reassess GKs (Onana?)

With Wilson/Isak I think the real question is what happens when we are playing in Europe.

Isak in Europe, Wilson in the league?

We won't know that by GW5.

Kind of a similar conundrum with Liverpool

I appreciate the critique though. Its just an idea at this stage & I'm not 100% set on it yet. Will flesh it out closer to GW1 & try get some more feedback on the strategy. As I said, haven't historically been a strong starter so I'm trying to work on something a bit different this year

I was initially all about WC5 but am now going for WC9. Both have the advantage of a long int. break obviously.
I see the swings as being even stronger (Villa and Pool) after the second break. And another advantage is that it allows you to see how Europe and late transfers affect things.
The downside is that the earlier you react to trends and teams, the better. So GW5 could be optimal. But the pricing was so generous, that it shouldn't be any great hardship to take my opening team through weeks 5-8.

You will be bringing in a lot of Newcastle and Villa without really knowing how these teams are affected by Europe, which they haven't had to deal with in a looooong time. Risky. With reward?

Agree. I'm not 'planning', but am mindful of the GW8-9 International Break. Not only is it the point where Liverpool's fixtures ease up, having had time to bed in the new players, but Villa too. City and Arsenal commence a trickier spell, not that we're likely to jettison their assets, but you never know. Chelsea's fixtures go south too.

Cheers, some good points. Maybe it would be prudent to wait a few extra weeks on Villa/Pool/Isak. Could always just start with Trippier on an FT GW5, although I would have to think about midifield downgrades. I do still quite fancy trying to get ahead with early risks but will think about the alternatives.

Point 1 - It's good to get off to a good start. Of course it is. A good start means you're on the right players early, so you catch price rises and are able to use FTs to find the next bandwagon. The extra transfer value you generate will help in the future. A good start does not mean you have to pick the template.

Point 2 - You should always have an idea of what transfers you want to make. Strategic thinking, fixture planning and squad management wouldn't be possible without this. The important thing is to be able to adapt to change, accept when you're wrong and divert from the plan if necessary. Always make room in your plan for things to change, players to get injured, suspended etc. Make sure that you wouldn't really mind keeping the player if your plan changed and things went wrong - that's a little easier to do these days anyway as the prices are lower and we don't have to be as punty with our fringe players.

Example, many want Estupinan for Brightons early fixtures. Many have 'booked' the transfer of Estupinan to a Chelsea defender for their better run GW3 onwards. However if something goes wrong and Chelsea turn out to be terrible still, or if you have 3 injuries in your squad, or if there is an essential bandwagon in a different position then it's not the end of the world to keep Estupinan.

A specific point I'd make is that historically, there tend to be fewer clean sheets in the first few GWs as defences take a little while to settle. That's why I can justify to myself having a very cheap defence. It enables me to have my Power 7 (all the big boys minus Salah) in Mid/Fwd.

        1. TheTinman
          • 9 Years
          1 year, 4 months ago

And with your 'Power 7' you have great flexibility with transfers built in. Because they're going to be decent picks no matter what happens.

            • 12 Years
            1 year, 4 months ago

Well if any/some of the Power 7 disappoint, they disappoint for many many as they'll be highly owned. The cheap defenders will be differentials. But if Arsenal concede a consolation goal and Gabriel gets only 2 points, my 4.5 mid-table defender will likely match him. It's really only Salah who has a good chance of destroying me - but then again, he's minority owned.

I think even without Mitrovic and potentially Silva, Fulham could still survive. They played OK without Mitrovic last season due to his ban and occasional injuries. As long as they get a striker half as strong as Mitro, they'll be fine.

Luton achieved the Cinderella story, but I can't see them surviving in such a competitive environment. Wolves as I said, are horrific at the moment.

I'd say Nottingham, Everton and Sheffield are in contention for the other spot to drop out. Possibly Burnley.

Wolves losing 4-0 to Blackpool of all teams, whether it's a friendly or running a second team, is horrifying for their chances for survival. I'd put good money on them being relegated this season unless they get some good signings.

In no universe should a Premiership team be losing 4-0 to a League One team, friendly or not. They could run their youth academy team, that's still not an acceptable result for a Premiership team and shows Wolves have little depth (and their starting XI leaves a lot to be desired to begin with).

See how they go in Premier League. They've had poor starts before and still stayed up. Usually boils down to being poor but 3 worse teams emerge. Lopetegui is a good manager. It depends on how much he learns from bad defeats and remedies that because if he doesn't they're fkt.

I don’t see City coming out of the blocks flying from the start of the season. Losing Gundogan, Mahrez and possibly Silva leaves them a bit light. Yes they will bring in new players but that generally takes time working under Pep and how he wants them to play. Think they will be slow starters again this season.

A lot of teams are in transition to be fair. Huge window. So many teams losing their captains & experienced players.

        City (Gundogan)
        Liverpool (Henderson, Fabinho, Milner)
        Chelsea (Azpilcueta, Mount, Kante, Kovacic)
        Arsenal (Xhaka)
        Spurs (Kane?)
        United (Maguire?)
        West Ham (Rice)

Chelsea's spine has been gutted. And I have no idea how Liverpool will cope without Fabinho. That Chelsea v Liverpool fixture could be wild.

His legs have gone and a Saudi club offered £40m. No brainer really.

What makes you say his legs have gone, he's only 29? Looked good when i watched him. I hear they are considering Phillips as a replacement!

You mustn’t have watched much Liverpool last season then, the bloke’s finished.

If they get Phillips in, they might as well go all-in on the Europa League cos they ain’t getting top 4 with him.

I didn't watch much of them at all just the odd game so that's interesting to know, thanks

They're in for loads of midfielders to replace him, Barella, Veratti, Doucoure, Lavia etc

            I think so. https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/12921344/fabinho-liverpool-give-midfielder-permission-to-complete-40m-move-to-saudi-side-al-ittihad

Money was good enough for them I guess. They need to find a new anchor fast or they'll be adrift at sea.

Fabinho's not as big of a miss as you make out - he was truly awful for a good chunk of last season. The young lads will easily fill that void and there are still leaders on the pitch in Mo, Ali, Virg, Robbo etc

They lost Sterling, Jesus, Zinchenko and Fernandinho last summer and took 26/30 points from their first 10 games, scoring 37 goals.

I think they will be fine.

I can't remember for sure but were any of those players regular starters? Gundog, Bilva and Mahrez were first choice but yes i agree they will be fine.

Mahrez only started 22 league games, Gundogan 27, Bilva 24. Jesus and Sterling had comparable starts the season before.

Depends who makes way for him, I suppose. If it meant downgrading TAA to upgrade Rashford I don't I'd take the risk, personally.

Would you rather have Pickford or Tarkowski?

If you mean Pickford and a 4.0 backup, Tarko, 'cos you can bench him.

Pickford and another 4.5 to rotate.

Well it depends on the whole squad, but in general I wouldn't want to have to start a Toffee every GW.

      I am currently debating

      A. Pickford and Shaw
      B. Onana (5m) and Tark + 0.5

I imagine they will get similar points

I'm thinking of Pickford/Shaw or if Onana starts at 5.0 having him & a 5.0/5.5 def, possibly Chilwell?

Thats slightly different as i was talking about United Everton combinations but yes the 5/5.5m defenders look very good and Chilwell is very dangerous when fit and starting, probably Chelsea's best goal scorer to be honest, says a lot for them lol

          Onana
          Gabriel Estupinan Tark

Lol! Yeah, I'm wary of forking out 5.5 for someone with Chilwell's fitness record & frankly Chelsea as a whole after last season.

    a) Shaw, Mbuemo, Nkunku

    or

    b) TAA, Enciso, Wissa

      Who actually knows.

Love the name by the way, have some Bulgarian heritage so Hristo is an alk time legend for me

Not really clear what/who you mean... but are they mutually exclusive? I mean, I think most of the really active posters here enjoy going into the fine details, looking at stats, poring over complicated plans. If it doesn't work out & I get a crap rank I'm not really bothered, but in terms of time & effort I actually take it "seriously" because I enjoy it & vice versa
