I don’t have Trippier - instead I have Dan Burn and use the £2.5m saved elsewhere.

However I am terrified of selling Burn even with his trickier fixtures coming up because he usefully at least covers Trippiers clean sheets.

    Does that sound ridiculous?

Nope, not at all, as long as you use the 2.5m to cover Tripp’s attacking output and inevitable BPS

That's not a good way to look at things. Burn doesn't cover Trips at all. Trips gets an assist and he usually gets bonus even if Newcastle concede

Tough fixtures coming up though - not sure he’s worth £7m.

Would need to sacrifice one of Alvarez, Haaland, Watkins, Son, Salah, Maddison / Saka and I just love my big 6 in attack / mid.

That’s the trade off with saving £2.5m

If you look at him as an attacking winger then it's easier to justify. Vs Dortmund he put 18 crosses in or something daft. He's still getting them in Vs the top teams

Burn is first on my bench for difficult Newcastle fixtures which is fine for someone who only cost 4.5m. Can sometimes rotate with J.Andersen like GW10. Trippier I feel obliged to play regardless of the fixture. Different creatures.

It’s the £2.5m extra over other Newcastle defenders though.

Last match Trippier got 10 pts for a clean sheet, assist and bonus.

Dan Burn covered 6 of those points for £2.5m less. Although I feel obliged to keep and play Burn every game now just in case Trippier goes big.

Thanks, interesting read. Trippier is always capable of getting assists in any game it’s when he gets an assist plus a clean sheet that he goes big as he usually sweeps up the BPS.

I can’t see many clean sheets in next few games either although Bournemouth away could be gold for him.

We shall see but this is all based on an assumption and not facts. At the moment he's bossing the game and it's best not to ignore that fact based on fixtures. They have held big teams in the past

I met him last week after th Brentford game, really nice guy, a lot of time for the younger fans and spoke with me and my Everton mate about the shambles being run at Goodison. I do hope Neal finds his scoring boots but he did miss a few chances last week too.

Don't think Newcastle away is the fixture to bring Gabriel in and think Porro might do better next week than Gab.

Not much you can do with the team and budget you have - maybe upgrade Kabore to Maguire and roll the other transfer? The Gabriel move would be better done for GW12

I'd be tempted by Maddison + Trippier to Son + Andersen to get the extra Golden Boot-chasing captain and hold long-term

Then Diaby + Cash as your route back to Trippier in GW15, probably for Diaby + Cash to Palmer + Trippier

Alternatively keep Madders or just go Diaby/JWP to a cheaper option now and play 4-3-3, but I'd prefer getting Son

Wouldn't lose Watkins or Alvarez in GW11

Had that dilemma last week and ended up keeping both Spurs players. With your set up though it is harder if you really want Saka.

I think you're better off skipping Saka for Newcastle away and assessing your options again after GW11. You could roll the transfer this week and have 2FT for GW12 and look for ways to get Saka in then

        Same

Planned to rotate Son, Saka and Rashford based on captain-material fixtures, while keeping Madders locked in

That plan died when Rashford dropped out and Son proved to be fixture-proof & more akin to Haaland + Salah for points

So, it was Madders who had to go as I realised I had 3 long-term captaincy options here... But that also meant losing Trippier temporarily

Made my peace with what Trippier gets vs Wolves (not expecting much) and Bournemouth (double digits) before I get him back, just to have 5 captains to choose from per GW

Not owning Salah means you can have Son, Saka, Madds, Bruno,Trippier, Haaland, Alvarez, Watkins ... and upside chase by selling anyone of the mids each week and get them back when you want 🙂

I’m not worried about Saka these days now he shares the penalties around.

He’s a fantastic player for sure but maybe there are better assets for FPL.

Took an early look at the GW11 and thought about moving one of Burn and Gabriel…but probably better save FT?

Gabriel has better short-term fixtures and attacking threat, so I'd be fine with moving Burn

Who'll you buy though? My recommendation and personal target for FTs this GW is the Palace defence (Andersen > Johnstone > Guehi), then Coufal(if fit) and Tsimikas as well

All I needed to see from Palace last night was that the Newcastle drubbing was a blip, and they proved that to me on the eye test throughout the game

I trust 'em enough to start their defender/GK in 4 of the next 5 GWs, then switch to Colwill or Sanchez at 4.6m from Chelsea in GW16

Easy avoid for me there. I'd rather keep Burn than get any United defender (even Dalot with his attacking stats) any time soon, because they are currently a dysfunctional defensive unit

Team performance is a vital factor for FPL defenders to get points. Would be different if it was an attacker doing very well in a lower-table team

Consolidate your funds over a few weeks and work Haaland back in to your team, even at the expense of Salah ... or WC.

Have already used my wc.. shaving off money by downgrading Trips, Leno etc. over multiple weeks you mean?I could do Salah+ Alvarez/Watkins---Haaland + Buemo/Mitoma would you do this?

        1. Hotdogs for Tea
          • 9 Years

For me there is not much choice upfront so why not just have Watkins Haaland and Alvarez ... it's a big step down from there

I would keep Cash & Trippier and bring in Tsimi and a cheap nailed starter for Porro & Zinc to generate funds

Then look at what you need to do with to get Haaland, which is probably selling Salah but having a couple of the really good 5 mill ish + mids

Can't have them all but if you are committed to rolling without Haaland then stick with it

          Good luck

Looking at the fixtures, I think you can still skip Haaland until GW15/16 if you can't get him for GW11. His post-Bournemouth run is skippable due to the other available captains in the game

But yeah, I'd also advise being ready to get him back by then

            1. Hotdogs for Tea
              • 9 Years

I am looking at Haaland and his last couple of goals where he receives the ball, makes a bit of space and then kicked the leather off the ball and still placed it to the side of the keeper from 15 yards out. He seems to have turned a corner and is concentrating on what he does best, hopefully.

I then look who he is playing and reckon it doesn't matter a jot, he will still get good service and chances created for him can still get a brace against anyone. The 'tough' opposition he is facing are hardly defending well and nothing to fear and and can't sit back like weaker opposition and just defend ... so for that reason I don't see a need to sell. He is fixture proof in a way no other player is and can score or blank against any team in equal measure.

For that reason I can't see the point of ever selling him. He is a phenomenon playing upfront for City and on penalties, he is the highest goal scorer so far with 9 goals in 9 games and returned in 6 out of 9 games.

He is a 'no sell' for me, irrespective of fixtures

Aka 'too scared to sell' 😉

Oh no, I'm not advising you to sell

I'm referring to when Lilmessipran can buy him back, since it'll take some surgery to achieve that so it needs to be carefully timed

Trippier is the main issue for most teams. I had to go without him and have all playing defenders 5m and under since the the start of the season. Painful watching Trippier get his hauls but I covered it elsewhere mostly. Always a trade off somewhere

Owning Haaland but not captaining will still harm my rank, thought the captaincy would have been shared about this gw with the likes of Watkins,Saka & Salah.

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years
      12 months, 1 day ago

If your captain outscores him, this won't matter

Every popular player you don't own will affect you even by getting 1 point, because someone else rose a bit with that point

But it's all negated if your *team* outscores enough other teams to rise to a better rank

This is why I try not to focus so much on the rank impact of one player in one GW, unless it's a 50:50 and you want to remove the luck factor where Haaland and your captain may have gotten similar points but you'll get punished badly if your captain gets injured or misses a pen (Mané TC is a sore example)

Overall captaincy can be deceiving. Top teams overall and in my mini leagues nearly all went Salah or Watkins so I'm still happy for Haaland to do well as a lot of teams doing well with Watkins, sacrificed Haaland, so small gains still possible

        Haaland, Watkins(c), Alvarez

        Turner, Neto, Taylor, Kabore

        Neto and Palmer rotate.

I would have to tweak it for the following with .1 itb and it looks strong

        Areola,

        Salah(v), Son, Saka, Palmer
        Haaland, Watkins(c), Alvarez

To be fair, Alvarez has been involved in 9 City goals while Haaland has been involved in 10. Just that Haaland is the scorer while Julian balances scoring with assists

I’ve kept him on my squad but rightly or wrongly he’s looked at as one tier below. Don’t know if it’s because he’s a striker and haaland & Watkins would be lost people first voices or because he’s in haaland shadow. Him and Bowen are maybe the the next tier down. Next week if you didn’t have haaland would you captain Alvarez???

It's also important to remember it's about having a good balance as well. No point in having all the big hitters if the rest of the team contributes nothing.
Haaland is also the most expensive out of all of them. Could put that money elsewhere and really strengthen the rest of the team. There will be blanks and rescheduled fixtures at some point and having a balanced team is important for that.

Got to be Watkins this week surely? Forest have been OK at the big sides overall, won't get hammered I'd say. Luton even in a 1-0 loss to Spurs should have conceded 4 or 5

        I bet hits on Watkins(C)

But just as Son(C) vs Luton fell apart once Bissouma decided to take a freaking dive after what he must have imagined was a highlights-reel slalom run from deep (yes, I'm still sore)...

An early red can change things. I've bought the ticket with that move though

    Cash - Trippier - Schar - Udogie - Kabore

Which one would you sell first for GW11 onwards : Schar, Udogie, Kabore?

Tsimikas may come in for any of them.
    Gabriel or Guehi for Udogie
    White for Schar

Strip out Salah's points and bonuses from penalties and he looks a bit ordinary in FPL terms.

Will be interesting to see how he goes if the penalties dry up.

But that’s built into his price isn’t it? Being dominant in a lot of games, Liverpool are likely to get a fair few penalties. Even without them he’s still a great asset

      1. Hotdogs for Tea
        • 9 Years

I suppose my point is that if Haaland had the same number of penalties he would be out scoring Salah and Bruno would perhaps be matching Salah ... and we would all have those two in our teams as essential ... penalties can dry up which would leave Salah as a decent pick but not the essential player he is at the moment ...

It is probably just a bit of clutching at straws and confirmation bias by me as a non owner 🙂

If the player isn't brought down in the box or the defender removes his arm to allow the ball through, there's a chance that it still leads to a goal. Nowhere near the xG cheat that is a penalty, but not exactly "No pens = No points". These things aren't that easy to quantify in what-ifs

Still an absurd number of pens so far though, but the Heavy Metal Football from Klopp this season will probably keep getting pens (at a lower rate) with all our tricky players on the pitch... I mean, even our current DM is basically an OOP CAM

I can't really disgree with that; its one of the main reasons it took me until this week to bring him back in (2 open play goals in a row finally...). But I'm not entirely sure the pen tap is going to dry up

Tbh I think he's been very very lucky with a fair few of his attacking returns (including the ManUtd goal and last night's assist) and even with the fixtures I'm not very hopeful on clean sheets in coming weeks personally. Without at least even just one of Eze or Olise they're just conceding too much possession and are under pressure too often with nobody to carry the ball or significant threat away from their half, we saw it last night with the number of passes Romero made. They can't return quick enough

            Interesting points there. Thank you

I expect less pressure from the upcoming opponents though

And I want to believe Matera being dropped to play Hughes upfront was because Hodgson wanted the game to go how it went before his late subs

So I think/hope they'll have it better against the slower defenders from the teams they're about to face, meaning their attackers might be able to hold the ball up more often or stay in the attacking phase for longer

Their attack was completely outclassed last night, I agree

I hope things go like the Forest game, the last/only easy opponent they've faced without Eze

There seems to be a perception that Sheffield United will concede more than 5 goals every game based on one game they played against Newcastle. They held Spurs away for 90 minutes only conceding twice in stoppage time, City and Utd only scored twice against them as did West Ham.

Not saying that they're not a bad team as the league table doesn't lie and Arsenal will most likely win, but Sheffield United (and Luton for that matter) won't take batterings in every game they play.

      1. Hairy Potter
        • 9 Years

They were ridiculously open against Newcastle and woeful defending set pieces. You'd expect them to try and park the bus against Arsenal. Not sure they have improved defensively in the air.

        1. House Frey Wedding Planner
          • 6 Years

They played to Newcastle's strengths that game and then after a few goals went in, their confidence was torn to pieces and Newcastle ran riot. I wouldn't expect that to happen in every game they play and most teams generally learn from such a humbling defeat and set themselves up to avoid such a thing happening again.

They will set up similar to how they did against Spurs today, and try to choke the life out of the game as much as possible.

Except that as soon as Arsenal are a few goals up then Arteta will start taking off the big guns to save them burning out.
