What would you change on this wildcard?
    Plan is to do Solanke+TAA -> Haaland+Saliba/Gabriel before GW19

    (4.7 itb)
    Dubravka (Turner)
    TAA/Porro/Pau (Mykolenko, Taylor*)
    Salah/Son/Saka/Gordon/Palmer
    Watkins/Solanke (Osula)

I'd probably change Taylor and either Palmer or Gordon into a Brighton midfielder.

You've got plenty in the bank.

Do you not want Alvarez at all?

Gross maybe? A lot of rotation in that team though.
        Taylor to who?
Plenty in the bank to afford Haaland
Alvarez it’s an option but City blank in GW18 and do not want another transfer out in the planning

      1. Ze_Austin

Not mind games, imo. It's about pain and inflammation, like Bowen's knee effusion

Us doctors can't give you an exact timeline on when your pain will stop

We can guesstimate, but can't give an exact date because everybody handles pain differently

Once Haaland is feeling good enough to sprint and kick without pain - maybe with the aid of painkillers - he's good to go

The current estimate from City's medical team is that he'll be able to do this on Thursday. They'll still have to check by then to confirm

If he's fine, then he continues playing normally, like Bowen once his knee cleared up

Again, this isn't like muscle/ligament damage or a long-term injury. There's no need to slowly reintegrate him or give him limited minutes once he's in full training

It's essentially a highly publicised "knock" that many footballers go through, imo

The mind game part was the utter silence about this before the Luton game

          That was wild

But this RTP timeline from Pep checks out medically

So in essence I agree with you. FPL managers moaning about managers being vague about injuries i really don't understand, they are not doctor's and a lot of sport injuries are difficult to put prognosis on.

Yeah. The doctors aren't sure and will keep checking "day by day, week by week" and that's what I keep trying to explain:

Wait for training pics and Pep's last conference. City may decide to be deceptive with their training pics (or not release any) and/or hide Haaland news behind the embargo that'll be lifted after the FPL deadline... But at least we'll *know* that we don't know by then

Haaland had a foot bruise last year in November, he missed Leicester game, a midweek CL game and was back with a 26 minute cameo against Fulham the weekend after. I don't know the difference between stress and bruise as medical terms, but I guess they are similar in that it's more inflammation than anything else.

            Yeah, check the video out

A journalist (probably the same one who asked more specifically about Dubravka earlier) asked about the missing players from the training/knockabout video, and Howe himself said his reply to that wasn't helpful at all (I'll leave out the reply here), chuckled at himself, and moved on like nothing happened

Karius is the third goalie in the peck order. But if he plays and do well I wouldn't be surprised if Howe stocks with him.
People tend to remember the bad game he had in the final against Real Madrid. For those who watched Liverpool that season, Karius was one of the reasons we got there.
He's a decent goal keeper and at a time he was regarded as one of Germany' biggest keeper talents.

Doug Luiz has served me well, but with a very light bench I might just take the 0.1m profit and run. I think it will be hitsville for many this GW so a good week to hide amongst the peloton. Ederson not travelled to Serbia as a precaution with an illness.

City reserves tonight with Foden in a false 9?

Also this is how Haaland was explained.

"The Norwegian missed the game on Sunday due to a recurring foot problem sustained on international duty last month."

Predicted XI: Ortega Moreno; Lewis, Stones, Akanji, Gvardiol; Phillips, Nunes, Kovacic; Bobb, Foden, Gomez.

Haaland could miss the Palace game. 'He’ll be back, I think, Thursday. We’ll see how he feels. I don’t know [if he will play on Saturday] right now.

Next press conference, I could be more precise about his conditions.'

"could miss" is an interpretation from Ben Dinnery on Pep's comment. Sounds like he's more likely to feature than not, it's not an injury that came last GW and not an injury that will keep him out for weeks.

        yeah

I posted the whole text and the link but realised that could be misinterpreted afterwards.

I still think he's probably 50-50 so it depends if the club hierarchy would want Haaland saved for the club world cup or if Pep values the title challenge greater.

Let's face it, Pep likes to collect trophies himself.

And Haaland likes to play, score goals and win. Also with pain reduced by painkillers, if necessary.

I think it's quite straight forward that Pep expects to see Haaland reporting in after some rest back at the training complex on Thurs.

      Hence he'll be back ...

Presumably after travelling home on Wed. night the rest of the squad will report in for light training later on or on Friday.

    3. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 4 Years
      1 year, 14 days ago

I was already in there a bit but I'm certainly now beginning to further entrench myself in the camp that aligns itself with those reports that appeared from a couple of places that Pep/City planned to use this last week as a rest period for Haaland given how many games he's started. Perhaps he does/did have an issue but the timing here feels a little bit too good for him to be able to return to training immediately after a dead rubber CL game abroad (and after an open training session)

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I don't think Pep likes the noise so much so he could have just said rest or minor illness like with Ederson.

He's been in the game long enough to know how people react to injury scares to star players, fans, media etc not to have to whip it up.

Nevermind the FPL crowd dissecting every snippet of info for their own purposes.

        1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 4 Years

I agree, but I think this has been fairly straightforward, he set out his stall early by saying it wasn't a break, "just stress" and that he didn't know when he'd be back. Then when asked again said he might make next weekend but he doesn't think so and that's about it, doesn't feel that big

      2. Eze Really?
        • 10 Years

I hear you Nate but Pep has no reason to mislead in this case. Not as if Palace is a crucial fixture and there are no internationals to lie about.

Palace have been a very tricky team for City in recent years and before Luton (who they scraped past), City hadn't won in 4. It's absolutely a big game for them

I have never used historical results to sway my decisions. Palace decimated by injuries and if a break was needed, it would probably be the two fixture he could miss; Especially with the club world cup. We are all guessing anyway. I believe his dad Alfie transferred him out. (I don't give this much credence either TBH)

    Areola*, (Dubravka*)
    Gabreil, Trippier*, Maguire*, (Branthwaite*, Taylor*)
    Salah, Son, Saka, Gordon, Palmer
    Haaland*, Watkins (Archer)

    0.4m ITB, 1 FT

Does the odd adage don't take a hit for a defender come into play here ? I'm thinking

Maguire to Senesi if Haaland is fit (play with 10 and hope one of the keepers starts)

    or if Haaland is out

Maguire & Haaland to Porro (who I want long-term) & Solanke -4 (play with 10 and hope one of the keepers starts)

Trippier, Branthwaite & Taylor will all be back next GW so reluctant to take any of those out for a hit.

...to take a hit shuffling cheap defenders who I'll hardly ever play. Will only take a hit for Trent - but I think I would put Porro (who I already own) in the same category

Almost took a hit for Porro last GW, and there was some regret before Wilson passed that ball to Joelinton late in the game

My point is more that Porro would be a long-term investment/upgrade, as OP notes, so not judged solely on this week. Whereas Senesi or someone covering just this GW wouldn't necessarily pay back the hit immediately

Oh, I don't judge based on instant returns. I could have delayed the transfer to this GW, which I eventually did

The hit still has a -4 effect on overall score by the end of the season, so I usually measure the possible gains vs taking, say, a guaranteed 0-pointer on the chin for that week only. That long-term asset can still come in next GW instead... Or be skipped if he gets a suspension or injury

I took a -4 to get Estupinan for his own goal and long-term injury

I took a hit last week to get Porro in and it paid off, Porro & Gordon in for two players that didn’t play (though it was Mbeumo & Schar so moves with longer expiry dates), +3 after the hit. I think Porro is an exception to the rule at the moment.

A point that I've seen by all content creators for not selling haaland is 'it will cost you 2 transfers'

I realy dont get this argument.

Surely the point of FTs is to use them to gain points!
If he is a major doubt for GW17 & you sell & he doesnt play & the player you got scores in GW17 & GW18 surely it's not 'cost you transfers' you've used your transfer to gain points?

Then if you buy haaland back in GW19 or GW20 & he's scores then surely it's a case of having used transfers well rather than it's cost you two transfers?

Obviously if you've got other issues in your team like no playing defence or goalie it makes sense to focus on your weak points

It's still a cost of two transfers. Whether it turns out well or not doesn't change the cost

Your last paragraph is the point: spending two transfers to sell and buy back a player is costly because you'll probably want to spend those transfers elsewhere... Say, dumping an actually injured player or getting a playing GK, by selling players you don't plan to buy back

In a perfect world with much fewer flags than right now in the game, then the Haaland sell and buy-back clause makes sense especially if the replacement outscores him

But right now, it's pretty unlikely that you won't need those FTs/hits elsewhere. Maybe if you've still got your wildcard

I don't think anybody's saying it won't work. But first, Haaland has to be confirmed out before weighing this: will Solanke/Watkins/Darwin outscore your *first sub* of the next 2 GWs by 8 points (effectively two hits if any other flag arises)? That's the tricky part

Again, it can work. That's just the cost of it

Just noticed an error in a paragraph here:

*In a perfect world with much fewer flags than right now in the game, the Haaland sale and buy-back clause makes sense especially if the replacement outscores your first sub

"Still, that's not -4 to sell Haaland, then -4 to get him back when I also have to deal with defensive transfers for the fixture swings and nailedness of Tsimikas and Lascelles, then the Son & Salah tournaments"

This is from where I posted about how it affects my own team:

        https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2023/12/11/fpl-gameweek-17-early-scout-picks-alvarez-in-as-haaland-news-awaited/?hc_page=3&hc_sort_by=comment_date#hc_comment_26300043

I guess other FPL managers are in similar positions for their teams: flag central, prioritise selling players you won't want back. Hence the need to weigh the cost of each transfer

If we had a consistent explosive striker like Kane who I'd consider keeping instead of getting Haaland back, or if AFCON and Asia Cup weren't about to take Salah and Son away, then maybe the idea of going Haaland-less from GW19 would be more tempting. But see Haaland's fixtures, ffs

          A quick "rule of thumb".
If Haaland averages 8 points and is a captain pick 50% of the time, it is quite clear what the downside is of not owning him.
If you replace for 2 GW's the like of Watkins and his average is 6 points, then one can quantify the decision/
If Haaland remains in your side and benched, then one must consider his replacement versus the "Watkins pick"
There are other factors such as the need for the Haaland replacement to keep long or short term.
Even this situation is team dependents in terms of putting out fires and future plans. It would be very boring if there were no varying narratives.

      • 10 Years

I understand their narrative but using a transfer relates to more than 1 week and free or not, it has a downside of 4 points.
Content creators are out to make some money. I have no problem; my choice.
Haaland and what to do with him is repetitive but they are expected to discuss main topics.
Focal is an ideal method of getting short and concise info. They believe themselves to be entertainers but some are not very good at it.

      yeah...

he's say 50-50 for Saturday afternoon.

      then 100% out in gw18.

is it 2 games to win the World Club Cup? And he's carrying a recurring injury into gw19...

      that's enough info for me.

If it was Alvarez you'd risk it because there's not a massive trade off back to front in the rest of your squad like a £14m chunk of it represents.

There is a definite edge to play there.

It amazes me how people haven't caught on to these content t*ts yet.

Right, this game is a competition. They want to finish as high as possible. They don't give a damn about your team, my team or anyone else's bar their own. They are in it for them. When they come out with crap like this there is a reason for it and it is more than likely for their own selfish reasons. It they are saying this it is highly probable that they can't make the move for some reason and they don't want others getting an advantage

Come on people get a grip. They are not our friends. Stop funding them. You do not need them

Honestly mate. They are the biggest threat to the future of FPL and any enjoyment we get from the game and no one can see it. Sadly the likes of myself will always be in the minority although more and more people are starting to catch on.

Why are we funding this madness. It's mainly the people who are easily influenced and don't know what they are doing that put food on their table

Yeah well paying here at least you are getting the option of using some features to select your own players with the members table. I am sure most people who do pay for membership do so because of the members table or as a way of saying thanks for providing a place to talk fpl. You would hope they are not paying to hear FPL General, Mr excitement and joy himself, talk about his template transfer moves and how you should help support his dream and buy him a £5 coffee .

I am more talking about patreons, YouTube membership and the worse of them all. Super chats. Imagine paying someone like Andy £10 to answe an A and B question . Andy , who is such a terrible FPL player that like Bakar he copies other content creators like for like and is actually incapable of making an FPL decision without twitching and sweating buckets .

On paper I agree, but I saw someone say before that I think Fabio Borges has a mindset of looking at every transfer as being -4, especially short term ones. I normally don't care about "the great and the good" but liked that idea, because you have to think of the opportunity cost of a move (so this means you can't make any other moves until a third week, which is a long time) alongside the other necessities that crop up pushing you into actually actively taking hits

Guehi to Porro seems a better use of a FT when looking long term.

Yeah, Son is confirmed to be departing immediately after the GW20 game, some may not be required until a bit later (but not late enough for FPL purposes) and maybe a tiny possibility some may be wanted a bit earlier but probably unlikely

Nice one for that, just wasn't sure at all. Looks like only 2 GWs in Jan then from an FPL perspective with the FA Cup etc so I guess GW 23 will be when they'll return on Sat Feb 3rd but again that'll probably be different for each player depending on how far their countries go

Yes I just spotted that, only GW21 & 22 from an FPL perspective will really be impacted and maybe 23 if a country makes it the whole way to their final. 2 weeks break between 20 & 21 and 21 & 22 so January will just be a slow month in general in all walks of life lol
