Croatia are the national team who continue to punch above their weight, making light of a population of just under four million with sustained overperformance on the football field.

They reached the European Championships for a sixth successive occasion with a narrow victory over Armenia on the final day of qualifying.

That 1-0 win came courtesy of Ante Budimir’s (€7.5m) header and earned Zlatko Dalic’s side a runners-up finish at the expense of Wales in a section that was won by Turkey.

It looked for all the world as though Croatia would progress as group winners after a strong start to the campaign. A draw with Wales on Matchday 1 was followed by three straight victories, including a 2-0 success against Turkey. Back-to-back defeats by Turkey and Wales, however, constituted a wobble but the Vatreni closed out with two wins to avoid the stress of the play-offs.

Croatia mustered just 13 goals in qualifying but their five clean sheets was an impressive achievement, and this defensive obduracy could stand them in good stead when they come up against Italy, Spain and Albania in Germany.

Having reached the final and semi-finals of the last two World Cups, Croatia know what it takes to go deep in major tournaments, although they will want to improve on their last two Euros performances, which ended in the round of 16.

The last of those exits came at the hands of Spain, who beat them 5-3 in a classic encounter in Copenhagen. Having also succumbed to the same side on penalties in the Nations League final last June, Croatia will be hoping it’s third time lucky when they meet their old foes in Berlin on 15 June.

QUALIFICATION IN NUMBERS

  • Most starts: Marcelo Brozovic, Josko Gvardiol, Dominik Livakovic, Luka Modric (8)
  • Most goals: Andrej Kramaric (4)
  • Most assists: Ivan Perisic (2)
  • Clean sheets: 5 from 8

Croatia took on North African opposition in March, sharing a draw with Tunisia, before beating Egypt 4-2. They also brushed up on their penalty-taking technique by overcoming Tunisia 5-4 in a shoot-out following their goalless draw in Cairo.

Although they lost on penalties to Spain in the Nations League final, they got the better of both Japan and Brazil via spot-kicks at the 2022 World Cup, so they are well-versed at holding their nerve from 12 yards on the big stage.

Who are the two best defenses in the Euros?

    I assume Italy is one?

I'm Italian, but I think France will be the hardest to score against, and I do not see England concede too much despite a little lack of quality in the defensive pack (especially if compared with the rest of the team, which I consider the strongest). A step lower, imho, Italy and Germany, given our 3-4-2-1 very defensive tactics and the latter's quite weak group.

Most undeserved champions ever. They never deserved it in 2022..and again history repeats itself. Amazing how opponents gift them the champions league.. man city had to just beat these anti footballers at home but lose on penalties.
Bayern should have knocked them out until Neuer decides to gift another title to real Madrid
Dortmund were brilliant today and after they missed 3 huge chances especially the one on one by adeyemi it was obvious real Madrid gonna win the cl again.

yeah they for sure look it, albeit havent watched much of them in la liga

i guess they've done well to make the most of barca/bayern being poor for a while now, and the english clubs struggling for whatever reasons. Pool threw it away in 2021/22, definitely should have won it that year ahead of madrid

Is anyone else's team already locked in basically? Can't go wrong with this unless fixtures are horrid for Palace at the start.

    Pickford
    Trippier Gvardiol Muñoz
    Palmer Saka (Two 6.5ish mids)
    Haaland Isak Mateta

(Could go Toney instead of Mateta if he moves to Spurs and get a Palace mid)

Only player I'm missing out on that I really want is Foden but can't have everyone and I'd rather have Palmer and Saka at that likely price range of 10m.

FPL's 'experts' have forecast the prices of seven of those players (56.0m).
Add in your two 6.5m mids and that makes 69.0m.
The bench will cost at least 16.5m, so that leaves just 14.5m for Munoz and Saka.
You might possibly be able to get Munoz and Saka for 14.5m, but then you may be left with a non-playing bench, which is surely not ideal.

Haha ok maybe "vitriol" is a tad melodramatic but I think I made it pretty clear it's my personal opinion and not an institutional response. There are other fantasy games to talk about but some of us need a break from FPL! Happy to use my responsibility/privilege here to help people out with their questions etc but not to subsume my own personality/opinions into becoming some sort of FFS drone (as most here have probably already noticed 😉 )

The Premier League fixtures will be released on 18th June, so I suppose we can start having preliminary thoughts about which teams have easy or difficult early fixtures then.

The Euros Final is on 14th July, which is only just over a month before Gameweek 1 starts on 17th August - it is possible that FPL might start releasing prices before the Euros Final.

We have no idea yet as to what FPL's pricing policy will be for next season, so any squads posted before the real prices are known should be accompanied by posters' assumed prices, as you say. And posters should preferably wait till our price forecasting competition starts before doing so - which will presumably be before the Euros have finished.

Personally, I won't start constructing my squad till after the FPL Launch when we know all the new prices, and it certainly won't be 'locked in' till much closer to the GW1 deadline.

First unofficial RMT of the season! Trippier has some competition for his spot by the youngsters and he’s getting on but we’ll see. I’ll be trying to get Foden in personally but can already see that’s going to be a mission given your presented squad 😀

Hi Zimo - as a few have posted above it's a little early, with no prices, fixtures and transfers unknown e.g. if Toney goes to Spurs does he become more of an option?
However, I too (the shame of it) always put a provisional draft together when the season ends. Personally I won't be starting (I think) with a Man City defender as they tend to start slowly and there's such rotation risk. I think Trippier might be out of reach, but with no European fixtures next season a Newcastle defender may well be worth it.
Palace (fixtures depending) could be great next season to start with, and I'll also be monitoring Chelsea players pre-season too.

I’ve also been thinking about my team for next season

      Pickford 5.0m, 4.0m

      Trippier 6.0m, Gvardiol 6.0m, Mũnoz 5.0m, 4.0m, 4.0m

      Palmer 10.0m, Saka 10.0m, 6.5m, 6.5m, 4.5m

      (I have Eze at 7.5m)

      Haaland 14.0m, Isak 9.0m, Mateta 7.5m

I have this at 102.0m, I may have been more harsh than FPL will be in a couple areas but think that just looks like being shy of affordable imo.

Okay good to know and compare where we differ.

Can’t imagine a world where they drop a 90% owned asset by 1.0m, more likely they up Haaland’s price and bring everyone else’s down by comparison like they did last season imo

I had Isak and Mateta at 8.5m and 7.0m respectively then thought it looked off compared to others.

FWIW I do think FPL will lean to a more lenient pricing so wouldn’t at all be surprised to see this be the case with aforementioned names and absolutely see a world where Palmer and Saka (somehow!) come in under 10.0m still.

If that happens you get Bruno not Mbappe. Finally someone to finish all his assists and get him pens.

I think you have a really good sense of humour ..... I'm sure that you don't think Mbappe will go to United.

If he doesn’t then either (A) Glaciers need to go or (B) our scouts need sacking

Glaciers are already going. Cursed climate change 🙁

ManCity need 2 players to beat Madrid, one right winger and one central mid

You’re not allowed to have 13 players on the field, but I agree, that would beat Real.

    RMT for 24/25 anyone?

I don’t think I’ll be able to afford premium defenders at the start of next season.

    Flekken 4.5m, 4.0m

    Mũnoz 5.0m, 4.5m, 4.0m, 4.0m, 4.0m

    Palmer 10.0m, Saka 10.0m, B. Fernandes 9.0m, Eze 7.5m, 4.5m

    Haaland 14.0m, Isak 9.0m, 6.0m

    = 100.0m

I have Gvardiol, Gabriel, Saliba at 6.0m, White 6.5m, Pickford 5.0m and Mateta 7.5m for those wondering.

Out of mere curiosity what price do you think Rashford will come in at?
With no Summer football he could be an interesting prospect next season.

One of the first (live) matches I ever remember watching on TV, in black and white, was the 1960 final between Real and Eintracht Franfkurt: 7-3. It's hard to not to have a rosy view of Real and the European Cup/Champions League after that.
