Euro 2024

Tom Freeman’s Euro 2024 Fantasy team reveal, captains + chip strategy

In the latest of our articles from our team of contributors, the man with five-time FPL top 1k ranks to his name, Tom Freeman, discusses his Euro 2024 Fantasy team.

He also talks captains and chip strategy ahead of Friday’s Matchday 1 deadline.

CHIP STRATEGY

When it comes to building a Euro 2024 Fantasy squad, there is quite a lot to consider.

Firstly, there is chip strategy. In previous tournaments, I’ve blown both (Wildcard and Limitless) in Matchdays 2 and 3, which has allowed me to pick a bespoke 15-man squad for each round of the groups. It makes sense, given that you need a strong start to challenge for the top places.

However, in Euro 2024 Fantasy, I’m leaning towards saving the Wildcard for the quarter-finals. That’s because transitioning from the round of 16 to the last eight could be tricky with just three free transfers. Should there be upsets, they’ll be a decent opportunity to capitalise.

So, I’m approaching the opening two group games in isolation, and selecting players from those sides who have strong fixtures to start the tournament. To identify those teams who have good fixtures in Matchdays 1 and 2, I’ve used Fantasy Football Scout’s fixture ticker, which is filterable by Matchday.

CAPTAINCY

There are five days of fixtures in Matchday 1, then four in Matchday 2, so ideally, you want to have a decent captain for each day to switch the armband if necessary.

In Matchday 1, the focus on Friday has to be Germany, with options from Italy and Hungary in the mix on Saturday,

The pick of Sunday’s fixtures is for England, while France and Belgium catch the eye on Monday. If it gets to Tuesday without a solid captain return, you can look at Portugal.

In terms of my own squad, I’ll captain Jamal Musiala (€8.5m), Federico Dimarco (€5.0m), Harry Kane (€11.0m), Kylian Mbappe (€11.0m) and Bruno Fernandes (€9.0m) across the five days of action in Matchday 1.

Then, in Matchday 2, I’ll probably turn to Musiala, Kane, Mbappe and Fernandes.

Knowing Mbappe might be out due to a flu bug, would you replace him with Ronaldo and bring him back in Match Day 2?

    Appreciate your help

      No.

France first fixture is on Monday and there is plenty of time until then to sort any flu out.

Comparing France’s to Portugal’s fixtures, would Portugal be easier then? Both of them are main men of their country but CR7’s mins maybe curtailed….

Already took Kane out for CR7, so yes the logical move is just to rotate between the premiums and get him in for Mbappe. Hopefully there will be some more need before then. I might be tempted to take a punt on Depay or get Griezmann actually.

the article i read said he didnt have flu. yes there is a flu bug going rd the french camp but mbappe missed training as a precaution. The journalist has tried to make it sound like he also has the flu but it is Coman who has it...others then jumped on saying he has flu but I dont think this is the case.

Nice differential with Shick and betting against Portugal, but its last day and you cant sub out Shick if he blanks.

With that in mind, if I were doing something like that I would go with someone playing earlier like Mitrovic/Depay

Am I right in thinking I should put my Portugal players on the bench as they play on the 18th and all my other players play before then?

That way I can swap them in if someone blanks?

    Pickford

    Faes, Rudiger, Mittelstadt, DiMarco, Grimaldo

DE Bruyne, Musiala, X. Simon's, Rodri

    Mbappe (c)

    Bench - Ronaldo, Fernandez, Yildiz

If this is the official game, yes..Also you can swap your captain before each day so captain a German player on day1, if it doesnt work out switch to day2 player and so on

Yes the ideal is to have a very strong bench who play last to give yourself maximum choice in who you sub off. Mine is Lunin, Cancelo, Fernandes, Ronaldo

Do you have a plan if Mittelstadt doesn't start?

I am thinking straight swap for Cambiaso (4.0). Predicted to start for Italy on right flank, but not nailed I think.

If he doesn't start then I've got Ronaldo and Fernandes on the bench. I'm starting with five defenders so am assuming I can change formation through the match week.

So FFS has Frimpong and Geertruida in the predicted lineup starting over Simons and Dumfries due to bib theory. Like really?

Xavi simons started 7 out of 8 Euro Qualifiers for Netherlands. Only game he didnt was the last game when the qualification was sealed. Great form for leipzig and touted as one of the best young talent in the world

Dumfries started 6 of the 8 qualifiers. Games he missed was due to a red card and the last game when the qualification was sealed. Vital cog for Netherlands in the last world cup and euro's.

Id be really shocked if Simons and Dumfries doesn't start

Managers do tend to keep faith in the players that was pivotal in the qualifiers.

Thinking I am gonna spend the extra 0.5 and go with VVD to be honest..has decent attacking threat, could be on pens..also think more famous players are likely to get more motm points

      1. HurriKane
        • 12 Years

Depays going to take pens. Vvd took as depay was injured

And believe me Dumfries is a beast for Netherlands. Involved in 20 goals+ assists in his last 33 Netherlands starts

Regardless of pens, he has scored from open play and he's nailed. Bibgate has caused too much doubt to risk it with Dumfries and Frim. Personally I've just abandoned the Holland defence completely and opted for Cancelo instead.

I'm inclined to agree with you tbh. Prior to bib tweet I was expecting Dumfries / Simons. Just a question of whether there's enough doubt there to go for more nailed options, of which there are plenty strong ones for 5.5m. And VVD does have good threat himself ofc even without pens

Hmm headline "super sub". First quote "I think he will start"...

I mean, I doubt he'll start every game, probably gets rotated MD3, but I'm not too worried about picking him for MD1 or 2.

Is Moldovan and Costa the best GK pairing for 9.0m if not using a chip in MD2?

The only concern for me is they both play on the same day in MD2. Is it worth going Pickford who has a tougher fixture in MD2 or another 4.0 GK?

What's you line of thought around this ? Why playing your better keeper first?

My thinking is the opposite due to:
        - If your first keeper does well or bad (regardless which one it is) you'll respectively stick or twist.
        - If your first keeper does "meh" though like 3-4 points, I'll be more confident to switch if it is the less promising keeper.

I agree when it comes to attacking returns, you try to catch some assist or goal from a cheap player first. With goalkeepers, i prefer to cash out the clean sheet and dont worry too much with rotation there.

If you're not playing a chip, I wouldn't pick 2 GK that you can't sub between. Maybe switch Moldovan - Strakosha or go for 2x 4.5m

Don't know about Theo but I've done a bit of digging on Mæhle & I think it's around 45%. Sounds like Kristiansen is probably the most likely starter of the 3 (Mæhle / Bah / Kristiansen) WBs & will play of the left. And I think I'd prefer Mæhle as a fantasy option cutting in from the left rather than at RWB anyway

I've managed to hold off on registering a Euro Fantasy team so far.

All my focus has been on FanTeam so I think I'm looking at entirely different sets of players. Worth making a team? The Euros fantasy format is quite involved. Would like to be able to sit back and enjoy the game without worrying about switching captains etc.

I'll give you my perspective, if it helps. I've created a team but just for the sake of pure fun, no mini leagues, no chasing OR or anything, just pure fun and having a bit of extra reason to follow, lets say, turkey vs georgia (having kvarathskelia) and having that extra feelgood moment when I see my player assisted or scored.

And if I miss deadline, or forget to sub out, transfer or something, no big deal.

    CRACKED IT!

After draft 4,233, the news of the flu in the French camp, and the fact that the odds on Mbappe scoring a hatrick are lower than that of Kane, Lukaku and Ronaldo, I've finally found a way of creating a much rounder team:

    Kane ~ Lukaku ~ Ronaldo
    Gundogan ~ Wirtz ~ Foden ~ Trossard ~ Jorginho
De Cuyper ~ Maehle ~ Mittlestadt ~ Dimarco ~ Frimpong
    Verbruggen ~ Lunin

My only question mark is on whether Maehle and Frimpong start - but you got to roll the dice at some point....

Now, time to SIT ON MY HANDS!
