How to play Fantasy EFL: Rules, points, chips, captain + more

72 teams. Three divisions. One official Fantasy game for the English Football League (EFL).

The oldest association football league in the world has a new game: Fantasy EFL!

This is a new format, with seven-a-side teams, points for things like clearances, blocks and tackles, and the ability to switch captains.

It’s like a ‘Free Hit’ every week, too, with no player prices.

In this article, we guide you through the basics of how to play the game.

SIGN UP TO FANTASY EFL NOW

Team creation

How play Fantasy EFL

To play Fantasy EFL, you need to do two things every gameweek:

1. Select a team of seven players
2. Select two clubs that you think will win

You can choose from any of the 72 EFL clubs, providing they are in action in that gameweek.

Team selection + formation

How play Fantasy EFL

Your seven players must be chosen from the following positions:

  • Goalkeeper: 1
  • Defenders: 2-3
  • Midfielders: 2-3
  • Forwards: 1-2

Your team must then adopt one of the following formations:

  • 1-2-2-2
  • 1-2-3-1
  • 1-3-2-1

Restrictions

Over the course of the season, you can select the same player as many times as you like.

However, you can only select a maximum of two players from any one club each gameweek.

You can only select an individual club a maximum of five times over the course of
the season.

Captains

How play Fantasy EFL

Each gameweek, you must select a captain who will score double points for your
team.

You can change your captain as often as you want, up until your current
captain becomes locked (see the Lockout section).

You cannot change your captain to a player who has already played in the gameweek.

Along with your captain, you must also select a vice-captain each week. Your
vice-captain will score double points for your team in the event that your chosen
captain does not play in the current gameweek.

The same rules above apply to vice-captains.

Team roll-over

If you don’t make any changes your team will automatically roll over to the next gameweek – and continue to score so long as the players are selected by their clubs.

If your team rolls over, and one or both of your clubs exceed(s) the cap of five selections in a season, then the club will randomly be auto-replaced with another.

Max Captain chip

The Max Captain chip automatically makes the highest-scoring player in your team captain for that gameweek, once all players in your team have played.

The Max Captain chip can only be activated before the start of the first fixture of the gameweek.

You can play your Max Captain chip twice over the course of the season.

The first chip can be played up until 31 January 2025, the second from 1 February 2025 onwards.

Select the lightning bolt icon on the ‘My team’ tab, as seen in the image above, to activate it.

Updating your team

You can make as many changes to your team as you like throughout the gameweek, but only involving players who are yet to play.

Lockout

Players and selected clubs become ‘locked’ as soon as their EFL game kicks off in the gameweek.

That means you can no longer add or remove selections from that team.

Once your captain/vice-captain becomes locked then you can no longer change your captain/vice-captain.

Lockout is automatically lifted once all fixtures in the gameweek have concluded.

Scoring System

Players and clubs are awarded points based on their performances during the season with players scoring according to their position.

The scoring works as follows:

All Players

Gameweeks

Fantasy EFL gameweeks will run from Thursday until Wednesday each week during the regular season.

Any players/clubs playing twice within that window will have a ‘double gameweek’. They’ll get points from both fixtures as a result.

By the same token, any players/clubs without a fixture in that seven-day period will have a ‘blank gameweek’ and score zero points.

Will Trossard likely start ahead of Saka for GW1?

This could actually happen if Arteta wants to give Saka a rest but normally Trossard never starts on the right.

They'll always share a little bit of game time though, Trossard would always be the first player to be subbed on but off as well.

I think he has a good chance. Hurzeler plays 343 so I can't see Igor LWB. Just a question of whether he tries to cram March/Mitoma in there, but judging from this article...
      https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2024/06/24/fabian-hurzeler-at-brighton-what-we-can-expect-in-fpl/
... the WBs are expected to hold width & drop back into a 523 out of possession (which doesn't sound Mitoma-esque), plus the inside forward roles look a more natural fit for Mitoma/March. So I think he will start & I'll probably go with him as my 5th defender

He might, but Seagulls' opening fixtures are horrible. By the time they turn, Estupinan will probably be back.

Thoughts on this GW2 BB into GW3 WC team?

    Henderson, Sanchez
    Robinson, Burn, Anderson, VdV, Murillo
Salah, Gordon, B. Johnson, Eze, CHO
    Haaland, Isak, Muniz

Would spread the Haaland funds in WK 3 with the WC

Feel pretty set on my team, or at least the main players.

The only thing I'm not sure about is whether to include Haaland or not. Damn expensive.

    A) Foden, Watkins, Havertz
    B) Andreas, Haaland, Wood

    Areola, Fabianski
    Gvardiol, Muñoz, Maatsen, Mykolenko, Barco
    Salah, X, Gordon, Eze, Rogers
    X, Isak, X

    Has to be A, no?

    1. Mother Farke
        3 months, 9 days ago

A simply has to outscore B over the course of a season. It has to, right?

        1. TheBiffas

      • Funkyav

its not as simple as that unfortunatley as that doesnt take captaincy into account.

B with GW2 you are captaining Haaland
A with GW2 no idea you you are captaining

You wont need to hide if you have Foden. Majority of Haaland owners wont have Foden, so its basically 1vs1 for points in each City match.
Not saying Foden will match Haaland, but there will be games where he returns bigger

Do new changes to the bonus points system change the appeal of attacking fullbacks compared to centre backs for example? What was even changed?

I remember the last update meant the attacking fullbacks gained the most.

Good question. The changes are outlined here:
        https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2024/07/16/fpl-2024-25-significant-changes-announced/

I think the introduction of -4 for each GC for defenders, coupled with the new additions for fouls won / SOTs, means most expect the BPS to take a general shift from defenders to attacking mids / forwards. There is also the addition of 3pts per goalline clearance but I don't think that's really going to compensate much for GC.

I'm wondering if this might actually serve to separate ARS/MCI (or other tight defences) from the rest more than it will create a divide between CBs & FB/WBs. For example, Saliba might not be that impacted by GC if they rarely ship more than 1, whereas someone like Leif Davis could easily have his chance creation bonus eaten into by a -8 for 2 GC.

Still, at the moment I'm heavily skewed towards attacking WBs (Gvardiol Maatsen Muñoz Davis Barco). I also don't really have a great grasp of the current BPS system tbh; tend to wait & see who the BPS monsters are before bringing them in.

I also think I saw a comment earlier about Black Box addresssing these changes in a recent pod so might check that out.

I don't know if it would be possible to use FPL review / similar algorithm to recalculate all the BPS from last year based on the new settings - that would make for a brilliant article if it's possible, or if not maybe just a few key indicators (e.g. Saliba, Trippier, Foden, Saka).

My latest draft keeps 1m back - first time I've managed it and prob won't last. But I'm hoping and planning to save up my FTs for 4-5 GWS, by which time there will be a lot of price increases.

Yeah, I could get Gordon and Isak for Maddison and Muniz, but would mean losing Trent and having a very weak backline of 4 x 4.5's. Tempting though

I had tied myself in knots trying to hold Watkins early. But then I realised if I can get him in by GW3 then I have him for when I want him anyway. So I dropped him for Isak, since he has better early fixtures.

Our drafts are very similar. Mine is a few posts down if you'd care to see it.

I like the idea of keeping back 0.5. but if Watkins jumps a bit, then you'd be priced out, as you have the exact money now. But I get the bit around not keeping Haaland long

He's in my draft, but if he goes to City I'll take him out. Pep doesn't throw new acquisitions straight into the first team.

If he goes to City he stops being a serious option, just like Grealish

Pep won’t be happy until every single flair player has excitement coached out of them

I'm becoming fearful we wont see all of Saka / Palmer / Foden in the first GW. Perhaps less-so Palmer, but Saka looked so tired. And we all know Pep likes to throw a spanner in the works.

Definitely less-so Palmer. He's already back in the gym. The other two did look tired, though, must admit.

Could be right mate definitively one to keep an eye out during pre season , have another draft losing Saka and having Havertz too

Of the 3 I'd have foden to be the most likely to be rested. Closely followed by Saka, but Arteta does like him to play every game. Its a shame really that Arsenal's best fixture of the 1st 3 is the 1st game vs Wolves. Palmer should be ok, but then you've got the new Chelsea manager...

Could be right mate!! With the news about KDB tho, does that not make it more important to start from the off maybe, will be interesting to see how it all unfolds over the coming weeks

I don't get this fear at all. They're professional sportsman. They finished a tournament in Mid July . . first game of the season is a month later. Plenty of time for some feet up time before returning to training.

Tried a Haaland & Salah draft. Even managed to keep £0.5m banked!

*Flekken / 4.0 (*Most likely this will be a Chelsea 4.5 if that option remains)
TAA / Myko / Andersen / *Ait Nouri / 4.0 (keep flip flopping this spot. Quite fancy Burn also)
        Salah / Gordon / Eze / CHO / 4.5
        Haaland / Isak / Muniz

I like the price points covered (including the 0.5itb) Eze can move up to 7.5 or down to 6.5. 3 x 4.5 defenders is nice due to the plethora of options at that price. Would probably intend to ditch Haaland after the inevitable GW2 haul and switch to Watkins and upgrade 4.5mid to Palmer/Saka.

I just posted a similar team. I guess no Arsenal and a light midfield maybe issues.

Yeah I guess, for a little while. I'm just intending to hit the Ipswich fixture. Haaland wont be there long. I think a lot of people get too tied up in wanting a team they don't want to transfer out of. When transfers are literally 90% of the game.

I tend to go for fixtures when there's no form data at the start of the season (obviously mixed with a little historical form data) and then once the season is up and running form can take a bigger slice of the decision pie.

Sorry but I just don't get why anyone would even consider playing chips so early in the season, especially the free hit. OK, there will be less double and blank gameweeks but don't forget the inevitable festive fixture congestion.

haaland + rogers vs havertz + foden and a flexible attack should be pretty straightforward, is it if rogers actually starts tho?

I will give the game a go I like how it's a fantasy game that covers 3 League at once certainly an interesting concept.
