Fantasy EFL: The ‘out of position’ players we’ve spotted so far

One of the first things any Fantasy manager worth their salt looks for in a new game are the minute variations and variances that they can grasp hold of to give them an edge. This could be an oddity in the scoring system, an interesting edge case with captaincy or chips, or an out-of-position (OOP) player.

As in pretty much every Fantasy game since the dawn of time, Fantasy EFL includes players in positions that may not be quite the same way the fans understand them.

In most instances, this has little to do with the game makers and more due to the data set that powers the game. In Fantasy EFL’s case, it’s Opta. Regardless, it does usually offer interesting opportunities for Fantasy managers.

FANTASY EFL: DIFFERENCES BETWEEN POSITIONS

Given that midfielders earn an extra point per goal to forwards (six v five) and also pick up points for interceptions, then a striker listed as a midfielder offers a route to more points. It’s also a way to cram more attacking assets into your seven-man line-up.

Likewise, getting players who are classed as defenders but playing further up the pitch opens up even more point options for clearances (+1 for every three), blocks (+1 for every two) and tackles (+1 for every two). There’s also the usual advantage of clean sheets and an extra point per goal. Obviously, this is weighed against the loss of points for key passes or shots on target (+1 for two of each).

With almost 2,000 players in the game to choose from, we’ve not managed to trawl through every single team just yet. However, here are a few of the standouts…

FANTASY EFL: THE BEST ‘OUT OF POSITION’ PLAYERS

Fantasy EFL 2024/25: Tips, best players, fixtures + more 1

Blackburn’s Sammie Szmodics, one of the most selected players in the game already, is classed as a midfielder, but will very much be playing an attacking role (and finished with 27 goals and four assists last season) if he stays at the club.

Davis Keillor Dunn was also brilliant last season, for Mansfield Town, with 32 goal contributions. He is also in the game as a midfielder, whilst clubmate Aaron Lewis has been playing as a right midfielder but is classed in various places as a full-back and is a defender in Fantasy EFL.

Elsewhere, Junior Dixon for Birmingham City is also classed as a midfielder in the game but really playing as a striker. His team-mate Keshi Anderson is a forward who’ll be playing in the midfield.

Indeed the ‘winger as forward’ transition seems a pretty common one, where Fantasy EFL have clearly taken a different approach to that adopted by Fantasy Premier League (FPL). For instance, popular Leeds United assets Crysencio Summerville, Wilfried Gnonto and Georgino Rutter would typically be viewed as midfielders by their fans and some other Fantasy games, but are being classed as forwards here.

Norwich City’s Jon Rowe has also been classified by Fantasy EFL as a forward, despite mainly occupying the left-wing position. Then again, he did score 12 goals for the Canaries in the 2023/24 Championship campaign.

The same is true for goal-scoring winger Jack Clarke, a popular selection by Championship and especially Sunderland fans, who likes to spend most of his time on the left-hand side of midfield. In Fantasy EFL, he will be categorised as a forward option.

And also Kayden Jackson, who featured in Ipswich Town’s promotion-winning campaign last season, making 29 appearances, scoring three goals and providing as many assists. He was playing mainly on the right-hand side of midfield but the Derby County new boy is now a forward.

Other out-of-position players include the likes of Jodi Jones (a winger who ended up playing left wing-back for Notts County last year, in as a forward), Derby County’s Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, and the Burnley trio of Luca Koleosho, Anass Zaroury and Mike Tresor (all traditional wingers but again placed here as forwards).

Suffice to say, we’ll be outlining more ‘OOP’ players from the game in the coming weeks as we find them. You can put this insight to work by picking your Fantasy EFL team now.

If you’ve spotted someone obvious you’d like us to add or just want to have your say on something else for the game, mail FantasyEFL@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk and we’ll take it on board!

    Thoughts on my team?
    Onana
    Porro - Munoz - Davis
    Salah - Bruno - MGW - Roger
    Haaland - Isak - Wood

    Turner, Andreas, Robinson, Barco

I’ll rotate some spots with my bench. GW2 the Fulham guys play for example.

I wouldn’t pay 5.5 for a Spurs defender. The rest looks nice though.

Thanks. I do get that, but I think spurs will start strong this season. I like Maddison and Porro. I think spurs defense will be better this season and Porro will do very well.

Porro would have been biggest(?) bps loser with new rules. One assist isn't enough any more. Spurs concede too much. So Maddison or VdV who can be benched for me.

I like this. Haaland and Salah without losing the bench.

On the same basis I'd go for two 4.5 keepers.

I like Flekken + Verbruggen. Maybe Areola?

Might swap keepers yea. If anything just to a 4.5 so I have something in the bank. Would like a piece of Man U defense however.

I'm on salah and haaland too atm. But I can't see past trent. His fixtures are just too good.

Fairly set on 343, yeah, loads of forwards I like this year. Too soon to call on Rogers (will see what happens with Felix, for example) but at the moment he seems good value for that spot.

I quite like it. Just not Bruno. I get the pens/fkick idea. I just don't think he's involved enough attacking wise other than that. Especially not when you consider you could have Gordon, who has better fixtures, in arguably a better team, for less.

As I mentioned in a post earlier, Pep loves trying/playing new systems every season. Gvardiol probably won't be as attacking as last season(despite it working well), Pep might not be as happy with his defence last season as he usually is, considering the cheap and stupid goals they conceded almost every match.

Aye, can never be too comfortable running with last season's trends in City's case. Actually I usually start quite light on City but might be heading for a triple up this time. But at least the 6m gives plenty of options to jump off GW3 to e.g. Maatsen or anyone who seems uncertain now but starts brightly

What do you guys think of this draft?

    Areola
    Andreson | Saliba | Burn
    Hudson-Odoi | Saka | Palmer | Gordon
Haaland | João Pedro | Isak

    ITB : 1.5M

Bench is filled with 4.5M and 4.0M fellas

    1. TheBiffas
      • 3 Years

Could make some nice upgrades there with that 1.5m. You got any planned transfers that you're gonna need it for?

        • 8 Years

I've not got any planned transfers at the moment. The only upgrades I can see maybe bringing in Gvardiol. But knowing the Pep-roulette, I tend to avoid him. And I cant afford TAA. Also, I don't see a decent 7.0M midfielder (besides Eze & Garnacho). Thus, I opt in for Hudson-Odoi at 5.5M - which seems pretty decent.

Might go in for Eze & Garnacho but Hudson-Odoi has some pretty decent fixtures till Gameweek 3.

Hmm... hope I am not weird haha

Would upgrade Anderson to Munoz and have Rogers as a 5th mid.

Interesting take there. But, why arent people worried about the Pep-roulette on Gvardiol? Am I missing something? or is he really nailed? I mean honestly, I would love to have Gvardiol. I am just worried about the Pep-roulette.

I'm not keen on Arsenal from the start
Six of their first 11 games are red rated (4 or 5)
But from gw12 until the end of the season only 2 red rated games
Also maybe change one of either Gordon or Isak to avoid New double up

You could strengthen this squad by adding a 4.5m def to the bench along with Rogers. The final half mill can be added to the 3rd striker, maybe Muniz or Wood.

    Thoughts for now?

    Flekken - Valdimarsson

Gabriel - Burn - vd Ven - Faes - Harwood

    Palmer - Saka - Johnson - CHO - Rogers

Haaland - Isak - Darwin (can be Gakpo)

At Feyenoord the striker was very important under Slot. Play CHO / Rogers depending on fixtures / minutes.

Does he prefer a forward who drops deep / runs the channels, or more of a classic 9? If he uses a no.10 I'm guessing more the latter..?

Darwin? I have thought before that he might be best used with a 10 behind him so he can focus on running in behind & stretching play. Obviously finishing / confidence might still be an issue but he would also make space for the 10 to operate so both become interesting options

He uses a no.10, and I would say the striker is more a classic 9. But a lot of movement in the team (this includes the striker) with runs behind the defence, especially wingers / wingbacks need to deliver crosses . Gimenez (Feyenoord striker) is imo comparable to Darwin. Don't think he will use Gakpo as a striker, but pre-season will tell.

But was it actually the striker position that mattered at Feyenoord, or Giménez himself (who is a fantastic no.9 and I don't understand how he isn't getting linked more with EPL clubs)?

Before Gimenez it was Dessers. He has less quality than Gimenez but took them with his goals to the Conference League final. So I would say it is a bit of both

Do you want to get Salah ,Haaland ,Palmer ,Watkins & Gordon in your squad ?
    Here's how to do it
    Turner/Areola
    Konsa/Andersen/Faes/Burn/Harwood-Bellis
    Palmer/Winks/Salah/Gordon/CHO
    Haaland/Watkins/Armstrong
No Arsenal atm due to difficult early fixture run

If you consider gw 1 as a free hit & you aren’t reluctant to use the first wc in gw 2 regardless of what the so-called Experts/ Content creators say about using the chip so early.

Who would be your essential picks in gw 1?

Isn't that a massive waste? Patterns in form won't start to be visible for a few more weeks and then once they are you're stuck with whatever you chose GW2.

Would start, fairly obviously, with Newcastle & Spurs attack - the latter could be a nice differential. I guess Salah too although I think Ipswich are very capable of an upset there. Man Utd v Fulham also looks ripe for goals, and I'd expect Arsenal to put 2-3 past Wolves.

I seem pretty settled on this with 0.5itb... & I'm NOT requesting a RMT 🙂

    Pickford(Virginia)
    Gvardiol/Porro/Burn/ (Anderson/Davis)
    Gordon/Palmer/Rice/Rodri (Rogers)
    Haaland/Isak/Muniz

I know loads of peeps see Rogers as a risk but as a Villain & from what I saw of him during the run in last season when we were chasing the 4th CL slot Emery trusts & rates him, so, with an eye on whether Villa land Felix I'm willing at 5.0 to give him a go to rotate with Muniz

Indeed, too much rotation up top, mids (apart from Mo) are meh & defence suspect & expensive so they don't interest me. Don't get me started on Nunez after last season. Still wearing the splinters after trusting him.

Thoughts on this draft for GW1?

    Sanchez
    Pau, Anderson, Mykolenko
    Salah(C), Foden, Gordon, MGW
    Haaland, Isak, Muniz

Fodder Bench, to get me to the Ipswich game for city. After the Ipswich game MGW, can become Nkunku if he's starting. Haaland cash can potentially be spread around.

So all the content creators are going Halaand and/or Salah but anyone honestly forgetting about either for the opening few?

Salah is in decline and Palmer is on the up. I'm 100% on Palmer.

Haaland is just too expensive and Isak is a great captaincy option GW1 and I'd be happy captaining Palmer away to Wolves in GW2.

Worst comes to worst can play FH in GW2 and get in Haaland if he smashes it.

    Thoughts?

FH in GW2 just so you can captain Haaland is really asking for trouble. If you are having such a FOMO for that game, just get him now and then sell him in GW3 if you wish

Yeah, I’m not sold on the idea of using the FH just to C Haaland, might as well start with him or even BB GW1 then WC him in.

Both the BB and WC1 are not that massive this season, the FH will still have a big use down the line.

There's some good picks but it doesn't look like a 100 million team, Belis, Mosquera, Bajetic and Wood plus Rogrers is too much of a compromise in my opinion. Most weeks you won't have an 11.

CHO, MGW & Wood? Can't see any others & plenty of alternatives at those prices. Also I think that's a bit of a slight on B'mouth Soton & Wolves. Forest could easily have a repeat of last season's struggles, their defence seems a bit ice cream on a hot day.

I'm really off Watkins. I think people are getting him because he had a freak year and scored a worldie in the Euros.

I'm not a fan of booking in transfers.

For example, there's talk about starting with Son for the first 2 GWs and switching to Palmer/Foden when their favourable fixtures start.

However, if Son performs well as expected and picks up some form would you really want to drop him?

I think starting with the players you want is the way to go and then use fixture swings to transfer out players in your team who end up not performing as you expected.

    1. LangerznMash
      • 8 Years
      3 months, 7 days ago

A counter argument to this could be made about Villa assets.
West Ham (away) then Arsenal make pretty grim opening two matches to be avoided. You wouldn't expect many attack returns of clean-sheets here and player prices may well drop £0.1m by gameweek 3 where a very nice run of fixtures begins.

So I will be booking in at least one planned transfer for Villa players after GW2 for this reason.

      1. Merlin the Wraith
        • 8 Years
        3 months, 7 days ago

Yeah not the best of starts, I don't think Arsenal will let us catch them cold again this season. Have only got Rogers in as an enabler so far & will wait to see what happens.

        1. LangerznMash
          • 8 Years

Also the odd planned transfer can make rotation pairings over-powered in terms of friendly fixtures.
I'll be utilising a 2 from 3 (£4.5m) defender system. Not figured it out yet but will probably start with Brentford, Fulham and Spurs before transfer one out for a Brighton defender before GW4.
          GW1 vs PAL & lei
          GW2 vs LEI & EVE
          GW3 vs SOU & ips
          GW4 vs WHU & IPS
