Why Salah + van Dijk have withdrawn from international duty

Two of Liverpool’s internationals withdrew from their national team squads on Saturday – but the news is good for once.

Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) have exited from their respective countries’ camps.

In van Dijk’s case, he was suspended for the Netherlands’ UEFA Nations League clash with Germany on Monday.

He has been allowed to return to Merseyside early as a result.

As for Salah, his departure from the Egypt squad is down to injury prevention rather than because of a fitness issue.

The Pharoahs were involved in a bruising encounter with Mauritania in Cairo on Friday.

Salah scored in a 2-0 win, eventually being substituted in second-half stoppage time.

But concerns about the quality of Mauritania’s artificial pitch and their robust approach have led to Salah avoiding Tuesday’s rematch.

Egypt boss Hossan Hassan had earlier floated the possibility of the Liverpool winger skipping the return game.

“If any player asks me not to play on artificial turf, I will agree. The Mauritanian team plays hard and with violent interventions, and their field is not the best. If Salah specifically asks me to do so, I will agree.

“I was very worried about the Mauritania match, and the pitch there is very difficult. Even if I don’t win there, it doesn’t matter. What matters to me is that I don’t lose.” – Egypt manager Hossam Hassan

And that request duly came, with Liverpool confirming his early return on Saturday.

“The pair will now take no further part in either international camp this month after the decision was made to relieve them early from their respective commitments.” – Liverpool club statement on Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah

That’s a welcome boost for Salah (and van Dijk) owners ahead of Gameweek 8, giving the Egyptian a decent nine-day breather before next Sunday’s clash with Chelsea.

Gordon + TAA to Foden + Rico Lewis for free assuming Havertz and Johnson are fit?

That could work out. I can't recommend Foden though... he could do great or he could get one point. There really is no way of knowing. There is also a good chance Gordon outscores him in GW8 at home to Brighton. That's a tasty fixture for him.

Yeah, but I feel Foden will outscore Gordon in the next 2..... having 3 city players against SOU at home could work well....not many ppl will go into that fixture with 3 city players in their team

If there ever is a time to get Foden, it is now with wolves and SOU in the next 2 with only 5% ownership

Foden has no form. Gordon's form is better, OK but not great.

Form is temporary....class is permanent..... and why is Gordon's form better..... didn't you see him miss that penalty against EVE

I'd argue that Gordon is the best player to own for NEW vs BRI. He missed that penalty but he scored against city in GW6. He's also a talented player like Foden.

That said, I'd understand too if you went with Foden.

If Foden was in form I'd pick him over Gordon. But a goal and assist against Bratislava isn't form. Also he's in a City team with more attacking threats than Newcastle, more players to split points and baps with.

Joel Matip retires from football. For me he is one of the most underrated footballers that I can remember. He was great defensively and could go on runs into midfield and make defense splitting passes. All for the sum of £0m! Legend!

Yeah a bit underrated, think he was at his peak while at Schalke but he wasn’t much of a legend for Liverpool as you described although the injuries could have been the reason for the downfall at the end of his career.

2nd strangest is when everyone thought break dancing in the olympics was a joke, our athlete proves it, but rather than being “thanks for proving our point, job done” the nation collectively screams “no not like that!” and decides she’s offended a nation and is worse than a serious criminal.

“Bukayo would have been close but it would have been unfair to take a risk with him. He’s a positive person and I expect him to be fine.”

Isn't this a bit of an overreaction to the Brighton game?
          GW5 - 4 shots, 3 in the box, 3 big chances, xG 1.33
          GW6 - 4 shots, 4 in the box, 4 big chances, xG 1.61

That doesn't exactly read like "hardly creating anything for him"..?

Possibly, just feels his role seems to be more dropping deep with the wide players benefitting more, could be wrong off course but still wouldn’t be looking to swap Watkins for him.

Watkins is up there with Saka, Palmer, Saka for me, they are close to fixture proof when fit & act as that secondary heavyweight next to Haaland, not sure I’d put Solanke in that bracket, he’s more competing with Wood & that bracket of which he is far more expensive.

On a wildcard so we'll see what happens with Son, Saka, etc. but might take a punt and go with a 7 pen taking attack.

Son>Palmer in GW12. Will go Palmer over Son if I don't think Son is going to play at least 70 minutes though.

    The attack would be:

    Salah | Son | Fernandes | Mbeumo
    Haaland | Wood | DCL

The Nations League are glorified friendlies, if it was World Cup qualifiers you’d understand, clubs will surely be getting the hump now in a season where there is no winter break.

Seen quite a lot of chat about Wolves options going forwards with the fixture swing after City. Elevenify who I've seen quite a lot of the content creators including Black Box use as a tool absolutely hate Wolves and have them as the 4th lowest predicted goals for the next 6 (the promoted trio below them) and 7th lowest predicted cleans for that period.

Shows like BlackBox are so far into the data rabbit hole that they don’t take fixs into account & purely base any opinion on an upcoming colour coded fix list & numbers from fixs that have played out.

Sooner or later people will realise that it’s not worth listening to unless you’re interested in seeing Mark trying to be too clever & outsmart the template (yawn) which becomes tedious after a while.

Edit. Based on the last few years, he’s not having the success he wants to outhink 10m players & should maybe switch back to trying to score as many points as he can.

          Your argument is conceitedly flawed.
We are all trying to win FPL so obviously we are all trying to beat the ten million odd, so that doesn't make sense.
"They don't take fixtures into account" of course they bloody do! I'm a viewer of the show and that's pure nonsense.
Mark, the creator of the site you are posting on, is one of the most insightful, knowledgeable, unassuming creators in this space.
I think your post is tediously yawnful tbh based on nothing really but a personal attack.
I am always open to the peeps out there that are looking for angles to beat the template and the bleedin' obvious so what's the problem?

No, they don’t, I stopped listening when they showed the defensive table and kept pointing out how Arsenal were way down where they should be completely ignoring that they had 3 or the hardest aways in 5 (Villa, City & Spurs) had 10 men for 2 of the games & still managed to keep CS in 2 of those games.

That’s when the penny dropped, it’s worthless listening to data driven pods with little or no context.

Yes, I know who Mark is, if you look next to my name you’ll see a 15 (where your 1 is) & I also follow his ‘career’ so my point stands, when you ‘look for big differentials’ to beat the game & high owned premiums in GW1, you know something has been lost in your style of play or you’re trying too hard.

So you agree that they do take fixtures into account but just don't like the way they interpret them, is that it?
You still come across as a tad judgemental, I mean did you have to bring up my one year posting (totally irrelevant).
If he wants to mix up his style of play this season so what?

No, I disagree, a defence will clearly be down on past years performance/perception when they’ve had hard fixs, to ignore that and point to data instead of context means it’s a waste of time persisting with it, the fact that Arsenal went away to City, Villa & Spurs in this period & kept 2 CS while having 10 men for over a half in the other shows that the defensive organisation & shape outweighs any data, you can watch football with your eyes rather than being led by numbers sometimes, it is allowed.

Feel free to listen to it, I’m just not interested anymore in data driven pods like that unless there’s an element of context to support it, as a customer (by way of giving them my ears) it is my right to judge/be judgemental.

Back to how he plays, he’s my favourite player of all time so I’m fully aware of his style but I’ve noticed a change in the last couple of years where’s he’s trying to be too clever to perform to his pod, he’s become obsessed with what the others are doing which is leading him down a path when making his decisions, good luck to him, just pointing out my observations.

FWIW, the second half display at City outweighs any data from that half to determine if a defence is good or not.

Context matters, pods are straying too far down the number side & further away from the context.

"it’s not worth listening to unless you’re interested in seeing Mark trying to be too clever & outsmart the template"

This is what I enjoy most about Mark!

Great! Keep the ownership lower. Attack is passing theeye test for me, considering the worst possible fixture run (and most extreme swing in the league). Defensively I would still be targeting them though

Im a big fan of Mark and blackbox, I wouldnt be 46th in HOF if it werent for FFS which I came across 9 years ago. Its important in any game learning from the best and first few years that would be Mark and some others around here.

FPL wire is pretty good as well. Good combo of data, context and eye test with great discussion.

Can't stand the Wire. Too much of an echo chamber to one another.

Doesn't leave much then? FPL Harry, Let's talk fpl, fpl mate, above average fpl - none as good as Blackbox or wire imo.

            FML FPL is the best.
Harry sucks the soul and fun out of playing. Too robotic.

Agree that fpl wire are also very good. Mixture of data, eye test and some different approach talking. You can dissagree with them of course, like is Foden a buy now, why did yoi reccomend Diaz on WC etc.....people tend to blame them (or other content creators) if something goes wrong, in the end you have to play your own game

Play your own game.....

Thinking I am going to go with Haaland, Saka, Havertz and Palmer. To do this I will be stripping out the defense.

    Something like this by gw9:

    Raya Fab
    Davis RAN Lewis Faes Konsa*
    Saka Palmer Eze Mbeumo Rogers
    Haaland Havertz Pedro*

Swap to VdB & Strand Larsen post gw9.

Cheap defence seems good for now because of the fixtures. But is having three defenders from relegation fighting teams in Wolves Ipswich and Leicester good?

No it's not, going for some attacking stats and the cs randomness. I could have TAA, a 6m def and Semenyo vs Palmer & cheap def (or a second cheap forward). It's a choice and hopefully works!
