The Stock Check

The Stock Check – Boxing Day – Part Two

Gareth Bale blasts a hat-trick to confirm his returns to fitness and heavy-hitting fantasy status, while the Potters find a cutting edge to recover from an early setback and consign Liverpool to defeat. Here’s part two of the Boxing Day Stock Check…

On the Up

Gareth Bale
A devastating hat-trick took Bale to nine goals for the season and gives the Welshman six goals in his last six league appearances. Incredibly, Bale has scored just two goals and only one of his four assists at White Hart Lane, proving to be a deadly weapon on the road. With strong fixtures to come, Bale’s form will bring him huge investment with significant FPL price rises to follow.

Jermain Defoe
His opening strike for Spurs took the England man to ten for the season and keeps Defoe bubbling in the FPL rankings, some 11 points ahead of Wayne Rooney. Bale’s form and his popularity as a midfield acquisition will doubtless dent Defoe’s appeal but Defoe shouldn’t be dismissed lightly. He has started every league match since Gameweek 11 and has never gone more than three starts without scoring.

The Spurs Defence
Their strong run continues: Andre Villas-Boas’ rearguard have now kept four clean sheets in the last five after earning their third consecutive shut-out this evening. With their fixtures remaining strong (sun RDG qpr), there’s no reason to suggest that this kind of form won’t continue in the short-term at least, with Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris justifying their current rankings in our Watchlist.

Steven Gerrard
The converted spot-kick at the Britannia gave Gerrard a third goal in three league starts and means that he’s now delivered returns in five of his last six outings. As tonight’s display demonstrated, however, consistency remains an issue in the Liverpool camp.

Jon Walters
One of the most unfashionable Fantasy assets around, Walters demonstrated what he is capable of by delivering a brace to notch his biggest returns of the season. With five goals and three assists so far, Walters has delivered strong value for his 6.4 price tag and, if Michael Kightly retains the right-wing role shifting Walters up in support of the lone striker, he could yet go on providing profit.

Kenwyne Jones
With strong and reliable budget options thin on the ground up front, Jones has quietly established a starting role in Tony Pulis’ side at the expense of Peter Crouch and is taking his opportunity. While the Potters attack is far from potent, Jones looks an effective blunt instrument and has provided two goals in three games, with an assist tonight – a good return on a 5.0 FPL price tag.

Going Down

Ryan Shawcross & Geoff Cameron
Both were teetering on the tightrope and both toppled off with bookings in the victory over Liverpool. The Stoke defensive stalwarts, with over 40% FPL ownership between them, will now miss the home league clash with Southampton this coming weekend.

The Villa Defence
Having conceded just two goals in five matches between Gameweeks 12-17, Paul Lambert’s back four have simply capitulated in the last two matches, shipping 12 goals to Chelsea and Spurs. With five conceded to City and three to United, it’s becoming clear that Villa are all too easily disposed of by the bigger sides. While fixtures are obliging in the coming weeks, confidence in the Villa rearguard has been shattered.

Steven Caulker
Caulker has, on occasions, looked a strong option within the Spurs back four, having enjoyed a run of starts from Gameweek 6-11. Since then, however, he has been subject to heavy rotation with the likes of Michael Dawson, William Gallas and Jan Vertonghen all vying for the centre-back roles. Caulker was benched again today and with Benoit Assou-Ekotto close to a return at left-back, it appears the Vertonghen/Gallas partnership could emerge as the established first choice option.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Would love some advice on this lot please. Team for the weekend:

    Jaaskelainen
    Hughes / Baines / Enrique
Yaya Toure / Puncheon / Mata / Michu [inj?]
Van Persie / Tevez / Berbatov

    (Begovic / Snodgrass / Nelsen / Cuellar)

I’ve got 2 free transfers and 0.4 in the bank.

Trying to get both Bale and Walcott but don’t seem able to without either losing Mata or taking an 8pt hit. Which seems the best out of:

A – Hughes and Yaya to O’Brien and Walcott (for free)
B – Enrique and Yaya to O’Brien and Bale (for free) AND then get Walcott next GW
C – Baines, Enrique, Snodgrass and Yaya to O’Brien, Davies, Bale and Walcott (-8)
D – Enrique, Yaya, Snodgrass and Tevez to O’Brien, Bale, Walcott and Hernandez (-8)

I'll be taking out Tevez and one of those two to bring in some little Mexican striker and a heavy midfielder.

REPOST - Cheers to those of you that replied on the last page!

Not a bad week with 52 points pre-BAPs, especially as I didn’t even have 11 men out. However, I have 2FTs and absolutely no idea where to start. Help!?

    Begovic, Jaaskelainen (okay with these)
    Baines*, Cuellar, Hughes*, Nelsen*, Mertesacker
    Silva*, Mata, Michu*, Sterling*, Puncheon
    van Persie, Suarez, Berbatov

Which of the above would you get rid of, and for who? I have 0.1m in the bank.

Had all kinds of elaborate xfer plans involving yaya and tevez etc but think I might just spend my .1 cash and get Davies in for Nelsen. This would give me Clichy, Enrique, Davies, Hughes, Gorkss. Should be able to field three for the next couple of weeks; I had one defender playing today. Any thoughts? Should I consider a hit for something else. Tevez would be a source of cash. Team linked.

Was trying to do without the Gorkss spot until the WC in order to save xfer. I see your point but I'm just gambling on a Clichy appearance. I've made some real clangers of defensive xfers this year. Was planning to bring in Gibbs in a couple of weeks perhaps.

    Do I need City cover?

I currently have Silva but want to ship him off for a variety of reasons. One is that he is fixtures aren't too favourable with nor, STO and ars in the next 3. I'm also not liking City's form; with just one goal from 2 matches. Sure Reading and Sunderland have been defensive but it goes to show City aren't as potent as before. And neither is Silva, he's had 2 assists recently but isn't shipping in the goals he needs to for his price. Finally and most importantly is that there are some great options coming through such as Cazorla, Mata, Walcott and even Gerard.

After all that, should I transfer Silva out or is that's knee jerk to get rid of a City mid with the class of Silva?

Defensively, I can see some value in Nastasic/Zabaleta with decent returns... but they just aren't clicking enough upfront...

Silva is obviously the pick of the bunch, but for the price I'd rather have Bale, Cazorla or Mata... and we can't have them all...

Which of the following 2 would you most likely get rid of?

Baines, Nelsen, Hughes, Sterling, Michu, Silva.

If Michu is fine, which he seems to be, then he'd be off that list. I assume Nelsen will eventually recover from the flu and regain his place. The biggest concerns are Hughes (why was he benched?), Sterling, Baines and Silva.

What would you do? I need some advice here as I haven't the foggiest where to start with my backline.

I'm planning to get rid of Silva (see my post above) but I would think about shipping out Hughes or Baines I'm your situation.

As you say Michu and Nelsen should recover and Sterling isn't worth enough to get anyone decent IMO. That leaves Baines, Hughes or Silva. I would get rid of Baines to a Chelsea defender or Hughes to someone in his price range
