Scout Report – Alvaro Negredo

City boss Manuel Pellegrini continued his summer of big-money buys yesterday by acquiring Alvaro Negredo from Sevilla. The 27-year-old arrives at the Etihad on a four-year contract for a fee initially believed to be in the region of £16m, with an extra £4m in add-ons. City’s third new signing of the close-season, following the purchase of Fernandinho and former Sevilla team mate Jesus Navas, the Negredo deal preceded the arrival of Stevan Jovetic as Pellegrini sets about restructuring his options up front

The History

A product of the Rayo Vallecano youth academy, Negredo racked up 14 goals in 15 appearances for the club’s B team in 2004/05 and, subsequently promoted to the senior side, notched once in 12 matches in the same season. Snapped up by Real Madrid in the summer of 2005, the forward spent two years at the Bernabeu but failed to make a single La Liga appearance – demoted to the B team, he notched 22 times in 65 matches before Almeria came calling in July 2007.

Installed as a first-team regular, Negredo immediately displayed his clinical eye for goal, with 12 strikes and four assists in 36 appearances over his first year with his new club. Stepping up another level the following term, he notched 19 goals and five assists in just 34 matches before Madrid exercised a buy-back clause in the summer of 2009. Rather than hand him a chance to nail down a starting berth, Madrid simply sold the forward to Sevilla for a healthy profit.

Over three seasons at Sevilla, Negredo established himself as one of the most lethal frontmen in Spanish football. His first two seasons harvested 34 goals and 11 assists in just 68 appearances before he notched an impressive 25 goals and four assists from 36 matches in 2012/13 – the fourth highest strike rate in La Liga last term, behind Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Radamel Falcao. Negredo ended his Sevilla career with a bang, firing all his side’s goals in a 4-3 win over Valencia. On the international stage, he has struggled to nail down a regular role – from 14 appearances, he has managed to find the net six times.

The Prospects

While the arrival of Fernandinho and Navas will inject pace and dynamism to the City first-team, Negredo’s role will be that of penalty box predator under Pellegrini. His scoring record stands testament to the Spaniard’s ability to turn half-chances into goals and, standing six foot one, his aerial threat could thrive as City seek to utilise the flanks more often this season after a somewhat one-dimensional approach in Roberto Mancini’s last term at the helm.

Fielded as the main forward in a 4-2-3-1 system by Sevilla, Negredo is clearly capable of leading the line alone. Compared with Sergio Aguero and Jovetic, he’s more of a traditional type of centre-forward and seems best-suited to be utilised in the advanced role if Pellegrini is looking for a more powerful option up top. As mentioned in the Moving Target piece on Pellegrini, though, he has a tendency to pick his side in accordance with opponent – indeed, it may transpire that the versatile Aguero’s ability to tuck in behind a lone forward or lead the line effectively may still make him the best bet for regular game time.

Certainly, the new boy’s arrival doesn’t bode well for Edin Dzeko – the Bosnian appeared to have moved up the pecking order after Carlos Tevez left for Juventus but is a little too similar in stature to be fielded alongside Negredo, with the latter’s strong work-rate, superior mobility and intelligent movement inside the box also in his favour. The Spaniard is also likely to challenge to the position of number one spot-kick taker; a factor that would certainly boost his appeal from a Fantasy perspective.

Having managed just 66 goals in Mancini’s last season, City’s main attacking assets have suffered a drop in price across the Fantasy games. The likes of Aguero comes in at 11.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) but is expected to benefit from Pellegrini’s more offensive style of play after notching just 12 times in 2012/13. While Negredo won’t be priced as low as Dzeko’s 7.5, an initial cost of around 9.5 could be on the cards and with home games against Newcastle and Hull, in addition to a trip to Cardiff in the opening three Gameweeks, City look primed for early-season investment.

Undoubtedly, a regular role at the head of his side’s attack would see many clamber aboard the Negredo bandwagon but with the forward options available to Pellegrini increasing significantly, it may well be déjà vu all over again, with many opting for the midfield security offered by Silva instead. Fantasy managers will be keenly assessing the pre-season situation for any indications – with a handful of friendlies still to follow, the picture will hopefully be a little clearer as we edge towards the new campaign’s kick-off.

Well I am going migs boruc. They rotate pretty well.
Verm and baker probably won't start. I would look at Mert instead of verm. At 4 there is not much choice, Chester/Pare I guess.
Kagawa is a risk, but if Rooney leaves I can't see him not start.
I am guessing Coldback is on the bench every week? how much is he?

            Firstly

            Migs and Boruc rotate awfully

            Secondly

if you pay 5.5 for a keeper you dont' rotate him.

5.0 is the maximum one should pay for a keeper in a rotation. if you're not ginna play Migs every week then downgrade him

Looks pretty decent, not a fan of Anelka and would put in Collins over Saylor but otherwise it fine. If Chelsea don't have a DGW then better to start with a Liverpool, Arsenal or City defender looking at the fixtures.

    Giroud vs Podolski...

Seem to see a lot of Giroud in RMT lately, but I'm biased against him because of three separate non-productive stints in my lineup last year when opportunities had looked tasty.

Thanks for the non-answer 🙂 Was looking for some opinions that aren't "choice C", because they are similarly priced, cheaper than some other attack, and Arsenal has a long run at the start of season without facing many (only 3) of the other "big clubs", and have two of those three at home.

Giroud. However for arsenal coverage I would try and find the extra cash for Walcott.

Thanks, I'm trying to squeeze Theo in as well, but also considering that some good portion of Walcott's value from last year did indeed come when he got to play forward, a situation that may not recur this year.

If Arsenal fail to sign another striker, then I'd go with Giroud but, personally, I think that's highly unlikely. A new signing up front would likely make you reassess your plans completely but, right now, I'd favour Girioud.

It's got to be Giroud for the moment.
Podolski is reverse oop and has serious competition. He is first choice but that usually why he got subbed. Giroud on the other hand is our only natural striker and will improve a lot this season I think. His growth rate has been amazing considering 3 years ago he was playing in French league 2.

But reverse OOP or not, Podolski outscored Giroud by good margin last year, when they were also both categorized as F (I thought), and with the new BAP where the points that calculate the bonus are greater for forward goals, yet you also get points for "being involved in the play" (passes, etc.,), and with assists being the same regardless of F or M, does that reverse OOP matter quite as much?

    Alright Fellas,

Posted a few pages back the FPS 'crowd' intelligence RMT. It had some disambiguating problems and some shady data, so have just done a refreshed one that I think is quite interesting (it's also much larger so we can see the smaller picks). A few things that jumped out at me is benteke seemingly getting a lot more love (seemingly because AVL is a better team than TOT for potential returns?), Mignolet's everywhere all of the sudden - obviously a popular choice now and lastly and maybe not all that surprising but RVP seems to be getting a lot less love.

I'd be interested to see how this changes over time, so I may try and post these from time to time. From what I can tell. The FFS meta-team is:

    Boruc / Mingolet
    Collins / Mert / Turner / Chester / Coleman
    Bale / Hazard / Snoddy / Walcott / Thomas
    Sturridge / Rodriguez / ?

The MID / DEF selections seem to have the most parity. It's really in the FWD position that there's the most variation.

      4.5 / 5.5 = 10
      4.5 / 5.5 / 4.0 / 4.0 / 5.0 = 23
      12.0 / 9.5 / 6.5 / 9.5 / 4.5 = 42
      9.0 / 6.0 / x = 15 + x?

So that leaves 10 for our 3rd striker. who do we fancy? Where would we make improvements?

Can I pick your brains for a minute?

Last couple of years Iv started with a really top heavy team at the start of the season and then quickly realising my mistakes early on Iv ended up using a WC and jumping on pro dominantly heavy midfield, so, this year realising my mistakes Iv set up with a power midfield (subject to changes pending future signings etc.) silva cazorla coutinho mirrallas bale. The theory behind it being that guaranteed starts higher potential for assists and the additional points per goal make midfielders more desirable captain choices also.

While trying to learn from previous ventures I can't help but want to jump on at least one big striker I.e RVP who if things aren't going his way it is easy to slot any other striker in because his price will cover any number of changes within the season. The trail of thought I'm leaning more gradually towards, however, is that two strikers of someone like Sturridge and berbatov would equally have the potential to return points thus nullifying the huge expenditure of someone of RVP's stature..

One tactic Iv never really used is the subs bench or rotation.. I often found teams away from home putting them on my bench and missing out on the points just because they were away from home and more likely to loose..

Long story short.. How many people spread the funds across a potentially valuable players and how many just lob money at 5 big names. What are the problems associated with spending big cash on a few players and what system do people find to bring in the biggest points haul?
